Florida State Game Thread (Updated with Post-Game Analysis/Ranting)

Today’s game is crucial for NC State’s post-season hopes. The Pack needs 1 more regular season to qualify for the NIT, and 2 wins would erase any doubt about receiving a bid. On a second front, there are ample ACCT seeding/cellar avoidance ramifications. A loss today pretty much ensures that State will be seeded no higher than 10th (with 12th still a distinct possibility). Wins over FSU and Wake would likely produce a 9 seed. As much as I’d like to set up a Friday date with VT instead of UNC, I think getting a higher seed looks better on paper (in terms of beating pre-season expectations).

Section Six has a good preview here. Short version – without Toney Douglas, the Noles have sucked. If we have our legs, I think we have at least a 50/50 shot to take these guys.

1:38 – I didn’t think we could play shittier than we did against Miami, but I was wrong. So far, this is EASILY the worst we have played on offense AND defense all season. Just pitiful.

Halftime – Coming out of halftime, the only starter on the floor should be Costner. Absolutely nobody else on this team showed up to play today. Send a message prior to the Wake game, that this kind of half-assed play is completely unacceptable. Caveat – Atsur’s play might be due to physical limitations rather than attitude.

2:09 – So far, the 2nd half is even worse. What a load of freaking crap this is. No fight, no effort, no pride to wear the uniform.

2:45 – Is Cliff Ellis mentally “challenged” – seriously? Gavin Grant is the king of garbage time. Would have been nice if he had done something while the outcome was still in doubt. Why are we risking further injury to Costner and Atsur? Complete lunacy.

End of Game – A fittingly humiliating end to a humilating game. Ben McCauley was invisible again, and has likely played his way out of all-ACC consideration over the last 2 games. Fells played as if he were stoned. Atsur was clearly way off, and the coaching staff stubbornly (and stupidly, IMHO) played him all the way, even after the outcome was clearly decided. We need the next game to qualify for the NIT and avoid last place, so it sure as hell better not come back to haunt us. Before the game the TV foofs were talking about FSU wanting the score in the 70s, and NC State wanting it in the 50s. In a way, that’s exactly what happened – Florida State 78, NC State 52.

Nevermind, as usual I’m way fricken off. Costner evidently had some teeth busted out. Otherwise he and the other one will always get there minutes, no matter what. Evidently Sid just doesn’t coach that way. Maybe he will come up with another “we just had a couple guys who just didn’t show up today”, only to leave us guessing what the hell he’s talking about since no one ever gets benched on this team (except GG, sorry Gavin there are different rules applying to you, kind of like Immagration).

Sw0rd, Costner is halfway there to qualifying to announce. Agreed, the announcers are terrible. ACC announcers and you’d think our PG’s name is “Astor.”

Unfortunately, this was another “where are their heads” game, compounded by losing the team’s leading scorer and rebounder.

on the positive side, we did get to see the missed dunk of the year when Swann completely misjudged the rim on his reverse slam and threw the ball straight down about a foot and a half away from the hoop. I laughed so hard at that, priceless.

Thorton fells so bad for us, he decided to score for us.

  5. vtpackfan 02/24/2007 at 2:59 PM #

“He completed more passes to the team in white than in red in the first half.”

That’s not right, man. You’ll find the TO’s are on the other guys today. Can we stop using GG as the symbol of this teams poor ass excuse of taking care of the basketball. It’s the whole friggin team.

    ^feels…sorry

Sidney is wasting valuable time to send a very clear and important message. I totally disagree with his decision to leave these guys in. They’ve had the opportunity to play 99% of the minutes the entire year. They didn’t show up today — bench their f**ing ass.

  8. graduatein08 02/24/2007 at 3:04 PM #

Coach Lowe has had to leave the game again…

  9. graduatein08 02/24/2007 at 3:05 PM #

    Nevermind, he is back

  10. tractor57 02/24/2007 at 3:11 PM #

Maybe Ellis should go back to singing in a beach music band.

This kind of game is why I am not ready to declare Lowe “the greatest coach in the history of NCSU”.
I still like our future with him but I hate to see this kind of effort.

BTW, they were missing their PG but it does not matter when you cannot put pressure on them. Sigh

    Sad game.

    McCauley didn’t show up.
    Grant did.
I thought this was an especially bad game on Lowe’s part. There were times where I was screaming for a Timeout and it never came. Felt like Herb Sendek was coaching.

Florida state was IMO pretty disrespectful dunking it at the buzzer and chanting tarheel rejects whatever the hell that means.
    Overall horrendous performance.

  13. choppack1 02/24/2007 at 3:25 PM #

Rick – I agree w/ you. I’ve set it a hundred times, I’ve seen some good things this year. But I’ve seen enough bad things and bad efforts that I’m not ready to crown him a special coach just yet.

More importantly, I hope Sidney gets better soon.

  14. vtpackfan 02/24/2007 at 3:26 PM #

I just going to stick with “the good still outweighs the bad” this year. Unfortunately I feel it’s becoming a mantra like “serenity now” from Seinfeld. I cna’t say what I think of these guys, it’s not right, Cristian, or fair. Let’s just say it’s hard to watch. I should have just chopped wood today, it would have been more interesting.

  15. dj9686 02/24/2007 at 3:28 PM #

OK, I like Gavin, but how many times in the first half did he make ill advised passes into the double team, couldn’t get it past the guy guarding him, I don’t know how many mis-rebounds out of bounds and bad shots.

  16. Wulfpack 02/24/2007 at 3:29 PM #

I’m noticing something here. Our performances in the two wins over VT and the win over UNC were probably the best I can ever remember a Wolfpack team playing the the lest few years. We were nearly flawless, clicking on all cylinders and playign with passion.

Conversely, our performances in the losses to Miami, FSU and in the 2nd half against GT were the worst I can remember in a long time. Is Lowe going to delight us with “highs” but disappoint us with unexpected “Lowes”? It’s way too early to declare this, and most programs tend to fluctuate from one extreme to the other over the course of a season. But I have seen 2 very different Wolfpack teams this year. We are not anywhere close to being consistent.

  17. choppack1 02/24/2007 at 3:40 PM #

wulfpack – next year and year 3 will tell us so much more. Right now, w/ a slow gimpy PG w/ no legs, no other guards to speak of. We have to play perfectly – and you’re not going to play too many perfect games.

The depth problem should be addressed next year. The guard problem hopefully won’t be as severe either. And hopefully, Sid won’t be as under the weather in such a critical stretch.

I imagine Sid is learning things too. This isn’t the NBA and there’s a lot of differences between the college game and the pro game.

With all the lessons the learned, the experience gained, hopefully lots of firepower coming in and coming back, we could see a pretty quick turnaround.

    Yeah I understand beowulf.

I guess I’m just taking out my frustration because I count up to every day we play…..I’ve been just waiting for today since Wednesday…..

And so I start the cycle again……

  19. BJD95 02/24/2007 at 3:46 PM #

I do worry a little about the NBA factor, in that it’s accepted as “just the way it goes” for a team just to collectively not show up a few nights. In an 82-game season, it can be shrugged off. In a 16-game ACC slate where every game REALLY counts, you can’t have that mentality. Pretty much everybody on the team deserves a kick in the ass for today’s performance (players and coaches).

I wouldn’t say that Grant came to play. He didn’t do squat until the game was no longer in doubt. That’s still more than you can say for Fells and McCauley, however.

    Two complaints
    1) Why can Raycom not do HD? It is friggin 2007
    2) Why is over the back not called. I am not reffering to this game in particular just the ACC in general. They just do not call it anymore.

  21. ShootingGuard 02/24/2007 at 4:10 PM #

I am almost ready for this season to completely end…

As much for tiring of hearing how our guys don’t care and don’t try or should be benched vs the losses themselves…

Every team, Carolina and Duke and all of their all-americans included, has its bad games, especially on the road. It sucks every time, but that’s the way it is.

Our situation is exasperated by lacking depth and having a host of other games where our guys come out and play fairly well (at UVA, at WVU) or even very well (at GT) and then completely run out of gas.

Our guys make a few dunks early in the season, and people act like they were suddenly a different team than the one that was predicted to win zero games in the ACC and be one of the worst teams in ACC history…

A few spectacular dunks, and our tremendous lack of experience, speed, depth, athleticism, a real point guard, a center, etc. magically disappears…

A couple good, surprising wins and the fact that the only decent guys we have log 35-40 minutes a game and have done so all season long with teams with twice as many decent equally conditioned players logging far fewer minutes plus pressing and beating on them all game every game is suddenly a non-issue.

Even a guy with the “astuteness” of Greg Doyel must laugh when a State fan wonders and/or questions the “consistency” of a team that has limited experience, speed, depth, athleticism, a real point guard, a center, etc.

As for Lowe, anyone who annointed him as a wonderkind at any point this season is a complete idiot…But to seriously question him at this point is equally stupid…It is too soon to tell…The guy has potential and deserves some time to prove himself—and I hope State fans don’t too soon lose sight of the fact that Lowe was the only coach who accepted what Lee Fowler had to offer…To rake him over the coals for not benching a scholarship player in favor of a non-scholly walk-on when FSU’s and other teams deeper scholarship benches are clearly trying to ram it down our throats at the end is beyond ridiculous…

Five guys can not play the entire season and play guts-out O and D for forty minutes each game. Anyone who is griping about effort and heart needs to get a reality lesson and stop being so negative.

Our kids have done a very respectable job with the few tools they have this year. I’m sure some of the so-called experts on this board could do a much better job of coaching than Sidney because they certainly do shoot off their mouths about it.

I want to win every game as much as anyone else but I knew coming into the season that we might not win anything in the ACC. To have won four is not what we want but it is better than 0 wins. Stay with the team and we will get some help with next year’s recruits and then the second year’s also.

  23. joe 02/24/2007 at 4:30 PM #

Raycom said “HDTV costs extra to broadcast, and nobody is paying us extra to put the games on in HD”

With an attitude like that, don’t expect HD any time soon except for the ACC tourney. Good thing the major networks don’t think like that. But then again I guess you can expect bush league stuff from a small time network.

  24. vtpackfan 02/24/2007 at 4:33 PM #

Shooting Guard, as usual your points are well put. As fans here commenting on Statefansnation, we are extremely sucseptible to coming down with “fanatic” thoughts about the program.

Your right, everyone picked us dead last, and performances like today make prove that it didn’t take an expert to predict this wreck waiting to happen. I suppose we will do it all again next year, last place predictions, the up’s and downs, all the fun that has become of a once great basketball school.

I’m sorry Legacy – I can handle the GaTech, UNC and UVa losses because in those games I thought we gave it all, we just ran out of gas.

    I don’t know if you’re addressing me, but here’s where I stand:

We’ve had a several games this year against lower or middle tiered teams where we can turn a “lost” or “mediocre” season into a pretty satisfying one. I haven’t been happy w/ our effort in many of these games.

I don’t blame Sid and his staff or the players – this is a transitional and challenging year for all involved. I guess what I’m saying is that games like these temper my expectations – and maybe that’s not a bad thing. But that doesn’t mean I’m not looking forward to next year.
