Florida State Game Thread (Updated with Post-Game Analysis/Ranting)

Today’s game is crucial for NC State’s post-season hopes. The Pack needs 1 more regular season to qualify for the NIT, and 2 wins would erase any doubt about receiving a bid. On a second front, there are ample ACCT seeding/cellar avoidance ramifications. A loss today pretty much ensures that State will be seeded no higher than 10th (with 12th still a distinct possibility). Wins over FSU and Wake would likely produce a 9 seed. As much as I’d like to set up a Friday date with VT instead of UNC, I think getting a higher seed looks better on paper (in terms of beating pre-season expectations).

Section Six has a good preview here. Short version – without Toney Douglas, the Noles have sucked. If we have our legs, I think we have at least a 50/50 shot to take these guys.

1:38 – I didn’t think we could play shittier than we did against Miami, but I was wrong. So far, this is EASILY the worst we have played on offense AND defense all season. Just pitiful.

Halftime – Coming out of halftime, the only starter on the floor should be Costner. Absolutely nobody else on this team showed up to play today. Send a message prior to the Wake game, that this kind of half-assed play is completely unacceptable. Caveat – Atsur’s play might be due to physical limitations rather than attitude.

2:09 – So far, the 2nd half is even worse. What a load of freaking crap this is. No fight, no effort, no pride to wear the uniform.

2:45 – Is Cliff Ellis mentally “challenged” – seriously? Gavin Grant is the king of garbage time. Would have been nice if he had done something while the outcome was still in doubt. Why are we risking further injury to Costner and Atsur? Complete lunacy.

End of Game – A fittingly humiliating end to a humilating game. Ben McCauley was invisible again, and has likely played his way out of all-ACC consideration over the last 2 games. Fells played as if he were stoned. Atsur was clearly way off, and the coaching staff stubbornly (and stupidly, IMHO) played him all the way, even after the outcome was clearly decided. We need the next game to qualify for the NIT and avoid last place, so it sure as hell better not come back to haunt us. Before the game the TV foofs were talking about FSU wanting the score in the 70s, and NC State wanting it in the 50s. In a way, that’s exactly what happened – Florida State 78, NC State 52.

    Good news, bad news.

First the bad: ACC tourney is in Tampa. We suck when traveling to Florida this year.

Next the good: We will meet everyones expectations (same as always) and finish near the bottom looking a long way up.

Man I could strip naked in sit in my front yard and not be this embarrassed.

I’m shocked we even took 18 fg attempts. I thought it was even lower.

For all the good I can say about Coah Lowe…..

This makes several games this year that I thought we havent showed up in the first half. That does not bode well for the future.

I think it’s fair to say that certain guys on this team are not buying in all the way to what Sid is trying to do. I think Sid needs to sit those guys even if it costs us the minute chance we have of winning this game.

personally I think every single one of the starters needs to be benched and asked point blank if they want to play another minute for this program again. If so, then they better start playing like it. What is it going to hurt? We’re already going to lose continuing to play like this.

One thing I’m beggining to notice is that this offense with this players spreads the possesion time around pretty generously. Atsur probably gets the most, and Nieman and Horner get next to nada when they’re in, but everyone else gets about equal amount of touch’s.

My point is that the TO’s are happening everywhere by everyone. I hope next year a more experienced ACC group of players can take better care of the ball. With Atsur gone this returning group is probably going to be expected to handle the more even more so I hope they work on ball possesion over the off season.

An infusion of young talent will amount to a waste of potential if Coach Lowe can’t relay the importance of taking care of the basketball to those players returning.

Sounds like I should be glad the game isn’t on TV up here. This team is so hard to figure out.

boring commentators… they absolutely have nothing else to talk about???

  10. CrankyCookie 02/24/2007 at 2:38 PM #

sigh… maybe we can still pull this out out?

At least next season the non-conference portion can be spent fine-tuning and breaking in the freshmen. There will be 6-8 players that know the system Lowe wants to use on both ends, and perhaps he can spend time focusing on some of the small things that have killed us this year.

On a somewhat related note (to basketball), the baseball team is doing well, up 4-0 to this point with Brackman pitching 7 scoreless innings.

    The refs are blind.

At least there is some hustle in this half.

The announcers just said Costner is done for the day

Pride – delight or elation arising from some act.
    Heart – one’s innermost character.
Determination – firm or fixed intention to achieve a desired end.

These are all traits I’d like to see from any NCSU athlete every time they put on their uniform. I’m curious to see if future recruits by Lowe will not only contain these traits but display them consistantly. I’m not saying that the current crop of players we have don’t have it, I’m saying that very few of them display them every time they step out on the court.

Coach Lowe doing what could prove to be his best in game decision to date. Fells and Costner are parked on the bench and Nieman and Horner
are throwing their bodies around. I feel better knowing that Sid is sending a clear message to this team. That is we are going to play the game right, and have fun doing it. It’s no fun for anyone (except your opponet) tremondous ability go to waste over an apparent inability to get out of your own way. Fells is teetering this season and I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t take a look around (again) this off season.

Still not out of it, but GOTAA get some stops….that’s not what I meant….dunk.

I just hit my mute button after Cliff’s remarks on the alley-oop.

  19. tractor57 02/24/2007 at 2:47 PM #

WolfPup35 I admire the love – but this one is toast. FSU wanted the game and State didn’t

seriously, do they just give this commentator jobs to anyone?? Hey I haven’t been one yet, let me.

  21. Sw0rdf1sh 02/24/2007 at 2:49 PM #

Geez, I could announce this game better with two fat lips and a mouth full of yellowjackets.

    send in your resume

I’ve noticed a pattern here. We’ve had several chances against mid and lowered tiered conference opponents to get out of the basement. We’ve only won 1 of these games – at Wake Forest. We played good for 30 minutes in another – GaTech. The rest of these games – Duke at home, UMd at home, Miami on the road, Clemson at home and now FSU on the road – we’ve stunk. Put this in the “embarassing” category….

I’ve got to admit… I’ve never seen a less inspired lazier effort that State has given in this game, especially in the first half. Has Gavin already been deported or left, as he thinks he can, for the NBA? He completed more passes to the team in white than in red in the first half. To me, it just appeared the Pack players have already taken the season off in this game. They just totally don’t seem to care, have put forth no effort, stand around on offense and just put up the ‘ole defense. I’m seriously disappointed in this game and team today. Dang, I have the flu and a herniated disc in my back and I could have put out more of an effort.

  25. tvp 02/24/2007 at 2:54 PM #

I’ll credit Gavin for playing well this half after his terrible effort in the first.
