Deadspin Pans Pirates Again

As a follow-up to this entry last week, the folks at Deadspin give us a great one – “Unbagged Heads Prevail”.

Why are we talking about ECU basketball?

Well, you esteemed Athletics Director finds their program important enough to TRAVEL to Greenville next year as the first Big Four school in history willing to waste an OOC road game in Minges Coliseum. So, I guess we have to talk about them because of their obvious importance to college basketball.

The only reason I can see here is that an away game means more than a home game when we are talking about NCAA invites… I am streaching to make myself believe this is the reason though… Seems that Terry has Lee’s number!

    Go Pack beat those Deacs!!!

And he laughed and said “Why no indeed, THE MEDIA,
SOME PART TIME WRITER, is all I need. For I can tear down in a
Day or two what it takes a coach years to do.

The RPI of some of the schools in NC:

    App – 56
    Davidson – 62
    UNCC – 131
    UNCG – 196
    WCU – 251
    UNCW – 261
    GWU – 265
    UNCA – 269
    Elon – 285
    NC A&T – 298

ECU’s RPI? 312. So yes, half of the Southern conference is more deserving of an away game from us than our stadium vandalizing brethren down east.

Further proof that Lee Fowler is, at bottom, an idiot.

  5. highstick 02/26/2007 at 6:27 PM #

Fowler, you’re a freakin’ idiot! Don’t you get it? Herb doesn’t coach here anymore and we don’t need any more trash opponents!

We shouldn’t be playing them in football, particularly if UNCX doesn’t share the load. And there’s no way we should be wasting our time in basketball!

Once a moron, always a moron. LF never ceases to underwhelm.

  7. redfred2 02/26/2007 at 7:38 PM #

I hope Lowe goes into Greenville and shows no mercy, doesn’t let up for a second until it’s all over, and literally mops the floor with the Pirates next season. Then see if the feedback from Holland wouldn’t convince Fowler that maybe he is supposed to be worrying about playing national and ACC level competition, instead of playing eastern NC politics.

Sorry, that wouldn’t at all be the proper thing for NC State, even with their far superior basketball team, to do. What on earth WAS I thinking?

  8. BJD95 02/26/2007 at 8:31 PM #

We should go play at A&T. Not just b/c they’re a more worthy opponent – the drive would be shorter, and we’d at least get some entertaining halftime/band performances.

  9. westwolf 02/26/2007 at 9:19 PM #

This simply confirms that the most important thing to Lee Fowler is…Lee Fowler. What he cares most deeply about is having other people in the profession like him, and one way to do that is to cave in to whatever they want to the detriment of your school.

As long a Foulup is at NCSU, Wolfpack athletics will be managed in a second (or third or fourth . . . ) rate manner. The idiot needs to be gone!

Don’t you get a bit of an RPI boost for beating a non-conf. opponent on the road?

Which shows you how rarely teams from power conferences play non-powers on the road…

  12. DRW 02/27/2007 at 9:09 AM #

    old13: Agree wholeheartedly.

  13. Sam92 02/27/2007 at 9:14 AM #

the saddest thing is – fowler scheduling us at ECU isn’t even surprising, it’s completely in character

i don’t expect anything more from an AD who says the biggest problem he’s facing is the internet

  14. CedarGroveWolf 02/27/2007 at 9:31 AM #

I we could beat those punks by a large margin every time they wouldn’t be so eager to play us. We barely beat them in bball & lost in FBall, at HOME!

  15. RickJ 02/27/2007 at 9:33 AM #

ECTC is 0 – 54 all time against the ACC. We barely avoided as embarrassing a loss as you can have earlier this year at home against the Pirates. Now we are going to Greenville next year? Of course we should win but this is what I expect – They will sell out their arena. In terms of attention and interest, it will be the biggest basketball game in Greenville in years, maybe ever. Stokes will point the team towards this game as the biggest of the year and their quickest route to respectability. They will play as well as they possibly can.

It is not about being afraid to play the game but is the game in NC State’s best interest? In my opinion, it is not – very little potential reward versus huge downside. Why would you want to put a new coach trying to establish a program in this position?

  16. NCSUownzJoo 02/27/2007 at 9:39 AM #

I could be wrong but isn’t Quinton Jackson the one who creates the schedules for the basketball team and not Lee Fowler?

  17. wolfonthehill 02/27/2007 at 9:45 AM #

Absolutely inexcusable scheduling. Zero to be gained, and an enormous amount of damage to the program if ezu plays as far over their heads as I fully expect.

“What he cares most deeply about is having other people in the profession like him, and one way to do that is to cave in to whatever they want to the detriment of your school.”

do you even know the man?

  19. RedTerror29 02/27/2007 at 12:42 PM #

^Lee has a wide body of public work by which he can be judged.

might be what Kansas, Kentucky, UCONN, etc… thinks about scheduling us away.

  21. BoKnowsNCS71 02/27/2007 at 1:37 PM #

Does anyone have the 2008 or further out basketball schedule for the Tar Eels? I’d like to se if they are scheduling games with ECU also.

  22. TNCSU 02/27/2007 at 4:47 PM #

I think we need a good Texas home/away series the next couple of years. Hopefully Durant will be gone, and we’d have a good chance to play against Barnes — not that I blame the guy for not leaving Texas. I’d also like to see us play another Pac-10 Team — I doubt it will be ASU, but any of the others, I’d like a home/away series with.

  23. RedTerror29 02/27/2007 at 5:02 PM #

^I’d still like to see us punk Calipari and Memphis. They’re Conference USA, but they’re a good enough program for a home and home.

  24. Sam92 02/27/2007 at 5:15 PM #

cedargrove that is a good point, but what it means is that if kansas, etc. are smart enough not to schedule us, we sure ought to be smart enough not to schedule ecu

Yeah, road wins and road OOC games, in general, impress the NCAA selection committee. Doesn’t matter who you play, as much as the fact you were willing to travel to someone elses gym.
