A View From the Cheap Seats

I am a State fan. There is a plausible sincerity to these words, an earnestness that rings poetic.

To mention these words is to seemingly reveal your character, the very essence of your soul. It is shameless and self-affirming, an unabashed sense of pride about whom you are, perhaps a tad arrogant, however devoid of elitism. To state these words is to affirm that your loyalty is absolute and unwavering; you have laid claim to a title that commands respect because you are genuine – a flailing sense of dedication is not tolerated. There is a subtle swagger in the way you say it, a bluster that only another true State fan can ever entirely comprehend.

And still yet, as a State fan, you are not exactly teeming with bliss, but rather a desperate longing for satisfaction, appeasement. There exists within you an undeniable complexity, a dichotomy to your nature common among Wolfpack Nation. You are patient and forgiving and doggedly loyal to a fault, but you are marked by a looming forlornness of unfulfilled expectations and dashed hopes. Yet somehow you are decidedly resilient, having borne the stigma of the 90s and shunned any of its accompanying shame.

And of course, you hate Carolina; it’s inherent, a black or white issue: You cannot be a true State fan and have even the slightest inkling of any tolerance for the team O’er the Hill. That is undeniable, scientific fact.

I hate Carolina. There’s a solemn sincerity in these words as well, although they might not be quite as poetic. I hate them with such a fiery passion that I delight as much in a loss for them as I do a win for us. I so despise losing to them, that when we do, the trauma takes days off my life.

But do I even know why I hate them so much?

See, I don’t hate Carolina because the bastards are perpetual media darlings or because everyone gushes over their storied and hallowed tradition of excellence or because they had a legendary coach that unified them for decades or because they have won five (still counting as of today) national championships and 15 ACC titles.

I don’t hate the Well or the Bell or the supposed magnificent aura of the Dean E. Smith Center.

I don’t despise them for the fact that even when we are better than them they usually find a way to beat us or that Tyler Hansbrough never blinks nor fouls. I don’t wallow in the desperation of the fact that Ishua Benjamin always seems to get bumped out of bounds with less than a minute to play leading to a puzzling jump ball call or that there’s always a Jim Knight around to take points off the scoreboard at a crucial moment.

I don’t deplore them for hanging in the rafters the jersey of any player who ever plopped his sweaty ass on the bench and I could care less if they have a nationally-exposed, bitter, storied rivalry with Duke and act indifferent towards State.

I don’t hate their pseudo-elitist personas and I don’t hate the media-bias in favor of them from Manteo to Murphy.

I don’t hate that anywhere I’ve ever been I could find a Carolina hat (including, most recently, on the ski slopes of Italy) or that everyone that moves to North Carolina always cheers for them because of “how good they are.”

I don’t despise the fact that I cringe whenever someone says “Tar Heel State” and that when I’m governor someday my duties will require that I pretend to be proud and excited that they won a championship when the team visits the mansion while secretly I’d like to build a wall around Chapel Hill and fill it with water.

I don’t hate that Carolina fans have no idea what it’s like to endure true frustration because after two years of mediocrity they solved the problem.

I don’t hate them because we’ll never be close to where they are in basketball and will never consistently dominate them in football, yet we’re unwilling to ever accept that reality.

I don’t hate Carolina for any of the aforementioned trivial reasons.

Wait, that’s precisely why I hate them.

In all those reasons, NO Dean Dome???? Naming a freakin’ dome after a coach who at the time only had 1 National Title — think about it, with the players he got year in and year out, he should have had at least 3 with alot more Final Fours! What’s the difference between the Dean Dome and a porcupine??? You ALL know!

  3. packwolf90 02/03/2007 at 10:21 AM #

    number of pricks

  4. TNCSU 02/03/2007 at 10:34 AM #

Not necessarily the number, but the porcupine has them on the outside! Oh yeah, where’s Jeff Lebo? — never forget a Carolina “friend” of mine swearing that Lebo was going to be a better NBA player than Vinny Del Negro….yeah, right… same guy who thought Joe Wolf was going to make a better pro player than Googs… yeah, right again, you freakin’ Tar Hole dreamer!!

  5. Charles Kuralt 02/03/2007 at 11:17 AM #

Jesus. I can’t believe I forgot Lebo. I hated that motherfucker.

    North Carolina STATE University.

Since 1887, BY the people and FOR the people of North Carolina.

It took what, 150 years to get it right? According to UNX morons the community college was there before the Mayflower landed.

I will say this for UNX – they supply more bodies to industries OUTSIDE the degree of a person than any university I know of.

Moo-U? More like High-Tech U. Want to compare corporate research money x-holes?

IF we can keep it close today (and yes we all know it’s a big IF) – Carolina’s due to choke on their success. Few close games to test them this year, so they’re just a giant waiting for a rock to catch them square between the eyes…… Now, will the Wolfpack be David against Goliath and fearless today……………. or fearful? That’s why the game is played on the court and not on paper.

(It’s easy to pile up points without the pressure of having to make one. Just hoping they’ve had too many biscuits in Chapel-Hill recently and will choke on one.)

Please be at least respectable today! I have to go to a birthday party with a Tarhole grad for a Tarhole grad. Should I wear my Red and White????

  12. redfred2 02/03/2007 at 2:03 PM #

Ah…what to think about today’s game? It means so much.

But then again it doesn’t, and only because of the many circumstances leading up to today. For so many years now this game has been just another game on the schedule, one that has basically been chalked up as a loss before the first whistle ever even sounded. All anyone expected was to see a good effort, but there was no way to really win the game. Now, we can be very thankful knowing that that thinking is no longer in place. We’ll just have to endure for a while, and have patience, until the reinforcements arrive and it’s the WOLFPACK’s time to howl once again.

I am a ’78 State graduate who grew up in a house full of Carolina fans. I know exactly where I was when I began my hatred of UNC. On April 1, 1974 when that issue of Sports Illustrated, the one with DT sky high over Bill Walton, had this quote from a Carolina fan: “I’ve never rooted for UCLA, but I hope State gets beat by a thousand”. I hate ’em. I saw this on the walls of the Student Union back in the 70’s and I repeat it every night just before bed; “Flush twice, it’s a long way to Chapel Hill.” Win or lose today, it’s great seeing someone who understands the rivalry prepare for the Tarholes. Go Pack!!!

    I hope we Hokie them.

hell, it worked on the Hokies this week.

The TV is on and muted, Wolfpack Radio is turned up, and I have my old school #35 jersey on. Let’s go Pack

Why are we not taking it to Hansbrough more? Wright is a far better shot blocker yet we’re feeding it to costner and not even trying the inside outside game vs a true PF like Wright..

Sid broke out the RED coat.

  18. Red_Terrors 02/03/2007 at 4:11 PM #

Is it me or does Costner look asleep out there?

  19. highonlowe 02/03/2007 at 4:11 PM #

Neiman is becoming quite the asset on defense

  20. Red_Terrors 02/03/2007 at 4:14 PM #

I agree on the Neiman comment. McCauley is playing like a beast again!!!

I love that Ben is taking it straight to Hansbitch. Get that goofy sob in foul trouble!

  22. Astral Rain 02/03/2007 at 4:44 PM #

OH well, great first half- but the warning signs are there- mostly Atsur’s foul trouble. This is the least confident I’ve been about a lead in a while- hopefully my nervousness is wrong- still, a great first half except for the last 3 minutes.

Hopefully the spirit of John Stockton takes out Gavin Grant’s body at halftime- but now I’m wishing for divine intervention.

  23. PapaJohn 02/03/2007 at 4:45 PM #

Halftime: 38/36 for the men in red. Shocking … but nice.

  24. MrPlywood 02/03/2007 at 4:47 PM #

Halftime, and I think UNC just got scared. State KNOWS that they are in this, and the Pack knows that the only reason they don’t have more of a lead is because of their own mistakes. It kills me to see sloppy passes and quick shots. The second half will be tough with Atsurs fouls, and the fatigue factor. But hey, they’ve got a shot.

I think Sid is coaching a great game. Love the jacket!

BTW, touch fouls on Atsur while Hansbrough POUNDS Costner… hmmmm

  25. DaPackster 02/03/2007 at 4:47 PM #

Great half by Ben, Courtney, and Costner. I believe Grant is tied with Lawson for most assists for Tarheels.
