Three Home ACC Games…

…three complete and unequivocal ass kickings. Today’s was probably the worst, because of the listlessness I saw at times. Also, our guys need to learn that you can play hard on D and still play smart. We seem to have two (equally lousy) settings – 1) Don’t even put your hands up; and 2) Bite wildly on any and all ball fakes.

As noted in the game thread comments, Lavin and Mussberger did a very nice job of being fair to Sidney and praising what we have to offer as a program. They even went so far as to say that the cupboard was pretty bare when Sendek left (and completely bereft of PGs), without taking a single shot at NC State or its fans. Were you listening, Jimmy Dykes? That was fair and professional broadcasting.

On the flip side, we have played two ACC road games (where I expected things would get ugly early and stay that way) and came away with a very competitive loss and a blowout win. Of course, it may just be that any good team will kill us, but we can stay with any bad/mediocre team regardless of location. But I’m not sure that caliber of opponent explains things 100% – perhaps our guys are putting too much pressure on themselves playing before the home crowd. Or maybe it’s just a small sample size fluke.

If you want a positive to take away, here’s one – we have fairly consistently handled the competition in our “tier” (i.e., against lower division major conference teams and mid/low majors). As SFN noted earlier this month, this young, undermanned team suffered no embarrassing losses (from a program standpoint). We played an awful Wake team, and won handily. State has hung in against “middle tier” teams like Cincinnati, West Virginia, UVA, and Michigan, winning the home contest. And against “first division” teams like Duke, Alabama, Clemson, and Boston College…we got our asses handed to us.

Help is on the way. We will be a significantly more talented team next season, with 2 at least viable options at PG, and with good depth everywhere else. Perhaps we can move up a tier, and win more than our share against “middle of the pack” teams, with the occasional upset (while continuing to not slip up against weak foes). That likely gets us an NCAA bid in March 2008. The following year (barring an early exodus to the NBA of our frontcourt), we could easily move up yet another tier, and be a legitimate contender.

It’s more likely that there will be additional bumps along the way as Sid learns the ropes of coaching in the ACC, but this optimistic scenario is certainly possible.

We will play better defense because if you’ve listened to ANY of Lowe’s post/pre-game comments, he ALWAYS stresses defense above everything else and you can bet your ass he’s stressing it in practice.

I know he stresses it, but whether he can translate his emphasis to execution by his players is a different matter. We’ve had coaches say they stress things in practice and it did not translate to execution by the players, whether in basketball or other sports.

And I don’t know if it’s just me or what but you just sound so incredibly negative it’s ridiculous.

Maybe the lumps we’re taking is getting to me, combined with my 15 year history of being a Wolfpack fan (the last 5 years under Herb is the best it’s ever been for me) but I do not see a reason to have unbridled enthusiasm about the future. We should be better, but again it’s based on a lot of IF’s.

    Hickson IS the real deal.

I hope so. I really really do.

    Next year we’ll have 5

I count 4: Fells, Hickson, Costner and Smith. Please let me know who I’m missing.

That isn’t a fair comparison considering we played the weave and heave under Herb and had self-imposed restrictions placed on ourselves while Robinson was a coach. Herb didn’t develop players, everybody knows that. Robinson didn’t have the talent to develop so thats simply not a fair comparison.

My point is we haven’t been talent laden in a long time and have just started catching up to the rest of the league, when we lost 5 players from last years team, with two leaving the team prematurely, and had two recruits transfer, due to the coaching change. We are not going to be as talent laden in the next couple of years, like some people think, because we are trying to rebuild from a mass exodus of good players; it will take time to really become deep and talented again. We have to get the most out of every player we have. An underachiever will hurt us.

For the record, I’ve never stated Fells will be a bench warmer next year.

I never said you did, but I have read some people’s posts, on SFN and other NCSU forums, who said Fells won’t be playing much next or the year after, as if it was no big deal. I think it is a big deal and will hurt us, if he is underachieving.

Oh yeah, and I just moved into a new double wide, I guess life just couldn’t get any better for either of us, now could it?

Dang a double-wide! With running water, indoor plumbin’, an’ ‘lectricity! Don’t get better an’ that! Nothin’ beats gettin’ youself indoor plumbin’. I love indoor plumbin’, beats an outhouse latrine any day of the week.

    Uh Gene,

I didn’t really move into a double wide, but I can see that my analogy was lost on you there.

Anyway, people have different goals, if those five years really did it for you, what can anyone say.

They didn’t do it for me. I want championship basketball. But I started attending NCSU in the fall of 1992 and as an NCSU fan, Herb’s last 5 years was the best it’s ever been for me rooting for the Pack and that’s a fact.

I just don’t see any reason to assume Lowe & Co. will deliver, until we actually start becoming competitive again.

We haven’t played championship caliber basketball in 20 years, except for a couple of surprise flashes in the ACC Tourney, under Herb. We haven’t been very good in 15 years. We became respectable, the last few years, under Herb but still had a long way to go before becoming very good.

We are making a lot of presumptions, like Degand and Johnson will be quality PG’s, even though neither has much experience. Johnson played in 4 games and was not spectacular. Degand has never played college ball. He was redshirted his freshman year, at ISU, and is sitting out one year because of the transfer to NCSU. We will have bodies at the PG position next year, but they’ll have their learning curve, when they start playing.

Like I said earlier, there are a lot of IF’s, which need to be addressed, before I’ll pencil us into the NCAA’s again.

“tct: so tell me, what do you look for to say they were prepared?”

Not getting your ass handed to you on both sides of the ball at home against a good but not great team.

Five with the transfer Johnson coming in. He was a top 50 player last year.

Rivals has Johnson ranked at 130 overall.

    http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=75&p=8&c=1&nid=836324

Scout has him as the #21 SG in the 2006 class, though it does not indicate his overall rank.

  9. NCSUownzJoo 01/23/2007 at 10:30 AM #

You’re right I looked it up right before I came back… Somewhere I could have sworn it said he was a top 50. Regardless 4 top 50’s and one being top 15 and another top 25 is a LOT different than two top 50’s.

Just to point out, all of those players COULD be on the floor at the same time, though I don’t really see that happening with McCauley out there. PG Degand/Johnson SG: Fells SF: Costner PF: Smith C: Hickson

  11. Gene 01/23/2007 at 10:49 AM #

I thought I saw he was top 50 overall too somewhere, but it might have been his position rank and not his overall rank.
