Technician to Stafford: Improve or Retire

Please DO NOT disregard this blog entry as some non-sports entry in which you don’t have any interest. If you are, were, or may be a student at NC State at some point in your life, then the topic of “The Student Experience” at NC State should be of extreme importance to you.

Unfortunately, the quality of “The Student Experience” has not been of extreme importance to the ‘good folks’ at NC State for quite a long time and Technician is writing about the topic in a must read piece.

They don’t hesitate to place the spotlight on Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, Tom Stafford. Under Stafford’s reign, NC State has seen the end of institutional traditions such as student campouts, The Lawn Party and Wolfstock while other key social elements to the student experience like Hillsborough Street and the Greek system of deteriorated to near death. (Just to name a few)

We are going to have have more on this later in the day…but my morning is swamped. I wanted to get this on the blog asap in hopes some of our best readers would share their thoughts and insights on NC State’s continuously dwindling student experience.

In short, NC State is becoming a large commuter school.

Please share some of your comments, thoughts and insights.

is the old mickey D’s the bookstore that has the shelves outside of it? or is the the one that is down toward The Brewery?

The one with the books outside is a used bookstore near the Brewery. The old McD’s is one block from the bowling ally and it is text books. Maybe Adams?
SO…what kind of work/partnership/strategic plans have the University worked on to optimize and re-develop the Mission Valley/Western Blvd/Avent Ferry Road cluster?

This looks to be a wonderful location to bring more vibrant commercial, retail and housing ideas to the table. It would/could be the defacto center of the ‘new’ University and also convenient to the (supposed) future redeveloped fraternity court. I’d love to hear what Stafford and the Univeristy have been working on the last 15 years.
Are any of you aware of the Umstead Act? That is the North Carolina law that prohibits public agencies (such as the university) from operating or owning businesses that compete with the private sector. That is how the private hotel industry killed the hotel and conference center on Centennial Campus a few years back, and why the university has its hands tied in participating in urban redevelopment ventures such as Mission Valley.

A major change in culture which noone has referred to is the culture of the car. Every student today pretty much views it as his or her birthright to drive everywhere. If students and staff were more independent of their automobiles (and the university and city provided adequate public transportation, which they lamentably do not), then the lack of parking in a place like Hillsborough Street would not be such a detriment. IN the 1970s and 1980s, we didn’t have Facebook, MySpace, or Instant messaging. Hell, we didn’t even have the Internet. The lack of public communal activities is due as much to this generation being glued to their computers and cellphones as it is to any university action…

A graduation goal of 75% in 4.5 years would be a joke. Many students work as interns, work part time jobs during school, take semesters off for projects, take on more difficult course studies, etc. Setting an arbitrary % of students to graduate in an arbitrary timeframe is ridiculous.

Maybe fraternity court being redone with the fraternities owning their new houses will be the first step in the right direction.

Also, I agree with the shopping area at Avent Ferry. That property is a gold mine sitting between Centennial Campus, traditional campus and fraternity court. How great would a huge shopping center of restaurants, bars and stores be on that site?
