Talking Football Staff

Not much concrete information about Tom O’Brien’s future staff at NC State has made the mainstream media in recent days. Don’t get too exctied, we don’t proclaim to have very much real inside information on the topic, either. We haven’t even heard when you can expect an announcement about the completed staff. But, there are a few things related to the staff that we can quickly highlight:

* The Boston media has reported that most/all of TOB’s staff except for three defensive coaches, inlcuding highly regarded defensive coordinator Frank Spaziani will be joining TOB in Raleigh. You can click on this link for links to biographies of TOB’s staff.

* The more that we DO hear, the more that it sounds as though very few…if any…of the old NC State staff will be retained by O’Brien. This is not totally uncommon in transitions like this, but many Wolfpackers will most definitely quesiton the spurning of recruiting coordinator and well-respected, Curt Cignetti.

* Cignetti has been the architect of the best recruiting classes in NC State history while successfully developing strong ties amongst the high school football community within State’s recruiting footprint. Additionally, Cignetti impressed everyone with whom he came in contact as he (and Dick Portee) held the program together and maintained State’s current recruiting class after Chuck Amato was fired.

* The N&O reports that another former Wolfpack coach, Steve Dunlap has the option to return to West Virginia and coach at Marshall if he so desires.

* One coach that won’t be in Raleigh is Steve Logan. Much to our surprise, Logan really is going to be coaching at Boston College next year as the Eagles’ offensive coordinator. (N&O Link) Wow. Must admit that it is pretty surprising that the Eagles could pony up the kind of money that Logan wanted. Logan has been working at 850TheBuzz this year. TheBuzz blogged this entry on Logan.

Steve Logan, the winningest football coach in East Carolina history — and more recently a popular radio personality in the Triangle — has accepted the job of offensive coordinator on Jeff Jagodzinski’s new staff at Boston College.

* Eagle in ATL blogged a great entry on Logan’s offense that included some not-so-exciting comments about NC State’s (probable) new offensive coordinator, Dana Bible.

3. (Logan’s) third and long package calls for deep routes with cuts and comebacks. He even mentions the tradeoff of losing the underneath routes. I think one of the most frustrating things about Bible was the short crossing route on third and long. It is such a low percentage play and put the burden on the WR to run for the first down.

4. His points on coaching QBs at the end. I am glad he realizes that you have to treat a veteran different from a rookie. How many times did Paul Peterson have to plead to open the offense? How come Matt Ryan was not allowed to audible at the line this year? He also clarifies the critical mistakes a QB can make: sacks and not throwing the ball away. Quinton Porter, despite five years with Bible, never let that sink in.

Speaking of DC’s, I heard a rumor that Steele from FSU might leave to be DC at Bama under Saban. Sounds reasonable, the crazy part was that CTC might get his old job back at FSU.

I guess Stevie Logan finally understood that no BCS school was going to hire World League of American Football OC/radio talk show host (not on during morning or afternoon drive) on one of the smallest station in a mid-sized media market/fired ECU football coach and pay him 36 million for 8 years.

Maybe the man was finally able to see the writting on the wall and is now retreating to an area where he won’t have any media pressure and will work to rebuild his career. Congratulations to Stevie and to the rest of us in the area that won’t be forced to hear how ‘popular’ he is and that he is one of college football great coaches anymore.

BC fans seem more down on TOB & Co. than warranted based on BC’s prior success in football versus TOB’s success there.

I take anything a BC fan says about their football program with a grain of salt.

Bible can’t be as bad as Mazzone or Trestman were, since you don’t keep piling up 8-9 win seasons, with a truly bad offense.

I will be curious about who coaches the defense, since this has been our relative strong point, the last few years.

On a side note, one reason BC offered Logan the OC job is both he and their new head coach, were on Bill Lewis’ staff at ECU and after Logan was promoted to HC, at ECU, Jagodzinski was one of Logan’s assistants. The men have a relationship going back several years, which probably helped Logan out here.

Choppack don’t know where you get your info but he was QB coach for two years and Jay Davis also started the ’05 season after “much improvement” in the offseason (so we were told) from his ’04 season. He was benched 6 games into the ’05 campaign. He has 12 TD’s vs 15 INTs in ’04 and 6 TDs vs 8 picks in 05. Perhaps that’s the best QB we’ve had since Rivers but my point is that’s not saying much.
And as far as the recruiting, it’s been steadily declining as has been well documented on this board, this fall’s being the weakest. And yes he has been recruiting coordinator since ’00. Profile is readily available on GoPack.

Bottom line is one of the resons CTC is out ant TOB is in is coaching turnover. There are good commetns here raised, but they seemed focused on next year as if the “right” fit at assitant coach will work wonders immediately. O’Brien is going to bring guys aboard that will likely stay with him a develop this program throughout his tenure, I hope. That has been his philosophy before, and I doubt he will start changing it now.

GC – I thought that Trestman was the QB in 05, but I haven’t really had a lot of time researching this.

I don’t really blame the lackluster recruiting on Cignetti – there’s those sticky results and HC being the media’s whipping boy to deal with. In the same vein, I don’t give him props for those early recruiting classes either. My current line of thinking is that I’d like him to remain on staff so we don’t lose the commits we have now – and that folks on Statefans have said he’s done a good job recruiting. I also know that he turned down a job to coach TE’s w/ the Packers to remain on our staff. In these situations, if the coach isn’t going to rock the boat, I like to see at least one or two remain on staff to at least assist in the transition.

I see ESPN reporting Cowher to step down from Pitt. headcoaching position. Guess if TOB doesn’t work out, we’ll be wondering what if……….

CP, granted that we need some continuity I agree, I guess my thoughts are that he isn’t the one. (and in all honesty it was 03-04 that he was QB coach but then again when PR is a Sr how much coaching did he need?! I blame him for not developing Davis more so he could step in though).

[…] We discussed TOB’s staff in this entry earlier in the week. The N&O followed up with the following today: Although O’Brien has not officially announced new staff additions, those from his former Boston College staff who will join him at NCSU are: associate head coach/recruiting coordinator Jerry Petercuskie, offensive coordinator Dana Bible, offensive line coach Don Horton, tight ends coach Jim Bridge, running backs coach Jason Swepson and defensive line coach Keith Willis.
