NC State 88 Wake Forest 74 (Updated 11:30am Sunday)

Joel Coliseum was half empty Saturday afternoon when the chant came echoing out of the upper deck. At the free throw line with 1:46 to play, Wake Forest freshman L.D. Williams had to double-take to make sure he was still playing in the Demon Deacons’ home arena. “For as long as I’ve been a basketball player, never have I heard another team’s chant on my home court,” Williams said. “That just sent me over the edge.”

Sidney Lowe gets his first ACC win as the Wolfpack take down rival, Wake Forest!!

I don’t care how bad Wake is this season – this win means a lot. In the history of NC State Basketball, ONLY Les Robinson and Herb Sendek had losing records against Wake Forest. It is imperative that NC State exercises its dominance over the Demon Deacons again. So on Saturday – despite Skip Prosser’s FIVE YEAR head start on Sidney Lowe – the Pack’s new coach starts on the right foot in this important intra-state rivalry.

* Take a quick look at some of these statistics about the history of sweeps in this series and note the discrepency in the long term history of the rivalry compared to the recent performance of the last 16 years.

On Saturday the Wolfpack didn’t waste another great shooting night by playing good defense and improving our performance on the boards. The Pack shot a blistering 60% from the floor, 45% from three point territory and 79% from the free throw line!! Unreal shooting and kudos should go out to most of the usual suspects with extra credit to Dennis Horner!

Boxscore | S6’s Analysis < = is always super!

Great comments in our comments section of the blog. Thanks to all! I thought that we would elevat the following:

I was thrilled to see Sidney go to the bench so much. Stealing minutes as I call it. We created so much offense with the 1-3-1 that it really took some pressure off of our half court game. Lengthening the bench sends a message to our guys to play hard, because you can take a seat for a while to catch your breath. The effort on our part was so much better today. We can be competitive when we work like this, although I don’t expect Mr. Fells to shoot like that every game. Dennis Horner is going to be a nice player. I don’t think a superstar, but a nice solid player for us.

I even got my wish for the new year that I posted earlier – 5 scrubs on the floor for the conclusion of an ACC road victory. Sidney Lowe – I think this guy can coach.

Some more Sunday morning comments:

* I don’t care how

* You can click here for some video highlights from WRAL-TV that includes Brandon Costner’s dunk. Surely someone will get this and Courtney Fells’ slam on YouTube in the coming days!

* Don’t ignore this entry on Sidney Lowe’s inclusion of David Thompson yesterday.

* Don’t miss GoPack’s hard work and great coverage. (Link here)

Some of our ‘live blog’ comments from the first 10 minutes of the game follow. We LOVE THE recognition of State’s recent inability / unwillingness to draw charges right before the Pack turned it around and had its best defensive half of the year in drawing at least three or four charges in the second half!

Additionally, the Trevor Ferguson comments foretold the playing time that Darrell Davis inherited as the game evolved. I think Coach Lowe may have altered his strategy for the rest of the year as the lack of offensive firepower that Davis, Neiman and Ferguson provide is outweighed by the other positive impacts of their presence on the court.

1st Half comments —

Not an all out liveblog. Just some comments during the game.

* Watching us just dribble can be awfully painful. Grant and Fells are just scary with their dribbles and the lack of fundamentals of some of their initial passes.

* When was the last time NC State took a charge? I just watched Gavin Grant literally RUN away from the opportunity to stop penetration and help Dennis Horner by taking a charge. The result? Two free points for the Deacs. You won’t see that in the boxscore.

* Nice to see Fells shooting so well and asserting himself offensively. Four three pointers in the first 16 minutes of the game. Wow! A shooting guard that can shoot (and slash the way that Fells can slash) will do wonders to free up everyone else on the court.

* Nice to see Grant slashing a little more and generally making better decisions than in recent games.

* Wake has generally worked hard to keep Costner somewhat quiet. Nice to see everyone else stepping up.

* Give State credit for significant improvement on our defensive boards.

* Ben McCauley hasn’t been as active as State needs; but the Pack has been able to build an 11 point lead with four minutes to play in the first half. This is good news. We have to hope that the Pack doesn’t completely forget Ben in the second half when/if Wake starts to make runs. Sure points (let’s call them “highly efficient offensive possessions”) that arise from getting the ball in McCauley’s hands will be key to the Pack maintaining the lead.

* Trevor Ferguson will not get many minutes if he doesn’t do more with them.

^ They would have more turnovers in home games if our official scorers didn’t pad the numbers.

  2. Lee Fowler 01/13/2007 at 4:46 PM #

K will have a back ailment this year. There are just too many shortcomings on his team for him not to.

  3. KChill 01/13/2007 at 4:49 PM #

xphoenix — I agree that we need Atsur back, but those turnover numbers are deceptive….at least 4 of them were palming violations that were shaky calls at best.

  4. dawgitall 01/13/2007 at 5:26 PM #

naw they were palming for sure

UNX about to get their barn doors blown off in Blacksburg. Ought to be classic Roy Williams time after the game unless he pops a Xanax first. Got to love it.

BJD95^ Your way of seeing it is the way the Coach saw it since Trevor was benched immediately after. He iniated it by his decision making so that it why he got benched. I understand the frustration people here have in certain players at times, its natural. I just don’t want people to lose sight that these players are all, with the exception of Atsur and Grant, still in the lower half of their development playing college basketball. Nieman is a “Rudy” story that ends with the season. Just trying to look long term here, that’s all.

    I’m sorry I can’t resist:

Former Mediocre Coach of NCSU 0-5 in conference play, 6-10 overall with a pretty good team and good recruits coming in.

Last person in the USA to want NCSU 1-3 in ACC, 11-6 overall losing his best 2 players and his 3rd not playing much this season.

Tune up the fat lady, its time to say we told you so.

Lowe: Played under arguably one of the best high school coaches of all time, recruited and played 1 year for National Championship coach Norm Sloan, played 3 years and won a National Championship under Jim Valvano, NBA stint (brief), NBA former Head Coach.

Sendek: Carnegie Mellon Graduate (well known for their basketball prowess), 3rd assistant coach under Rick Pitino, nice guy.

Who says credentials and pedigree don’t show?

“Former Mediocre Coach of NCSU 0-5 in conference play, 6-10 overall with a pretty good team and good recruits coming in.”

I like Lowe much more than Sendek, but NCSU this year has 3 top 100 recruits and Grant, and Sendek has an 11-17 team that lost its two leading scorers. I’m not saying that everyone should pretend Sendek doesn’t exist, just wait a couple years to say I told you so.

    Also hell yes Va tech

One of those guys (Lavin) who turned our job down before Sid took it was doing the UNC game today. I think he’s still got some Roy running down his chin. You could tell he wanted the Heels to win so bad at the end there. Almost as bad as the refs wanted it. Va Tech was really playing 5-on-8 for the last few minutes. It was almost comical. Of course on the one UNC possession they didn’t call a foul Roy almost wet himself. What a jerk.

I promised the wife this Saturday was hers, so I missed it all 🙁

Great to hear though!!! This is a confidence builder and it couldn’t have come at a better time. I know the coach is very glad to have this win right now.

    Great day in the ACC!!!

It was really a lot of fun watching the game today. Someone said earlier that, “The first half today was the best I have seen us play in years.” I agree, but don’t set expectations too high. I love Sid and I love the way these kids leave everything on the floor, but we have been shot lights out the last three halves we have played.

BC. Clemson and Wake all set their defenses to stop McCauley and Costner from getting the ball inside and either going to the basket and scoring or kicking it back out for an open shot. Somewhere around halftime of the Clemson game our coach(es) changed the offense.

For the Clemson game and today’s game combined from behind the three point line Costner shot 50%, Fells 55%, Grant 60% and Horner 83%. Somehow I think coach k might see that and make some adjustments. But then given our guys ability to adjust on the fly maybe it’ll open up the inside.

It’s really great to see these things develope instead of the “keep doing it the way I told you,” philosophy we have seen in the past.

I was at the game today. It was the quietest I’ve ever heard an ACC arena.
    It was a beautiful sound.

    GO PACK!!!
    GO COLTS!!!
    WAY TO GO HOKIES!!!!

    A PERFECT day!

  17. redfred2 01/13/2007 at 9:47 PM #

How much of the game did Wake use full court pressure?

  18. Glen Sudhop54 01/13/2007 at 9:54 PM #

The few times they tried it the Pack burned them with some easy hoops.

State played well, very well for them. But, the true story may be just how dreadful the Deacons played. They were awful.

Refreshing, though. We’re used to teams playing like Superman against us.

The day starts well as I run into a State graduate for the second straight week at my son’s bball game. I wear State gear on game day, but sightings of fellow alums are rare here.

I even got my wish for the new year that I posted earlier – 5 scrubs on the floor for the conclusion of an ACC road victory. Sidney Lowe – I think this guy can coach.

I really enjoyed it this afternoon when I walked into Best Buy, still in State gear, and on the home theater big screen is the replay of Costner’s behind the back between the legs slamma jamma followed by more highlights from the victory.

    Glen

Curious about Davis? Did look comfortable on the court? Does he hustle, play good D? Does he possibly have any appreciable BB skills that might come out in time?

  21. Glen Sudhop54 01/13/2007 at 10:39 PM #

He looks fairly (and surprisingly) comfortable on the court. He does hustle, but his D may be a little too rough right now for hoops play. But, gotta like the intensity!! With some work I think he can actually help defensively. I think he deserves 2-3 minutes of play…..Definitely an offensive liability. He didnt even make many shots during the warmups when I was watching. Do you remember Luke Buffom who played for us in 97 and 98? He could at least be that type of player-though he’s shorter and quicker.

  22. Woof Wolf 01/13/2007 at 10:41 PM #

Fred: They tried a man press a little in the first half and most of the second half, but it didn’t bother us that much. Most of our turnovers were off traps and stupid stuff in the front court.

Late in the game we got the ball to Costner and pulled everyone else into the frontcouurt and he easily walked the ball up. I’m sure we are going to see some zone presses and stuff that will bother us, but it was not a big factor today.

I really like our coaches ability to make effective adjustments during the game.

Davis hustled the whole time he was in the game. Probably won’t contribute a lot on offense, but everytime the ball went up it was liike, “I’m going to get this rebound or cl0ck somebody trying.” Great effort and intensity.

  23. redfred2 01/13/2007 at 11:06 PM #

Thanks Woof, that’s exactly what we need from the bench right now. Play like that sets the tone and lets the opposition know that they’re going to work for it.

    Georgetown falls to Pitt.

Only an hour left, but this day just gets better and better!

  24. sf59 01/13/2007 at 11:12 PM #

Davis can hopefully provide a toughness and defensive presence off the bench. He attackes the boards and is very long and athletic. I have not seen anything offensively from him, so who knows. But he almost had a sweet follow up dunk, but got called for over the back.

  25. brent_road97 01/14/2007 at 12:30 AM #

ASU shot 28.4% through 4 confrence games and 18% tonight from 3 point land. Man Im glad those days are gone.
