NC State 88 Wake Forest 74 (Updated 11:30am Sunday)

Joel Coliseum was half empty Saturday afternoon when the chant came echoing out of the upper deck. At the free throw line with 1:46 to play, Wake Forest freshman L.D. Williams had to double-take to make sure he was still playing in the Demon Deacons’ home arena. “For as long as I’ve been a basketball player, never have I heard another team’s chant on my home court,” Williams said. “That just sent me over the edge.”

Sidney Lowe gets his first ACC win as the Wolfpack take down rival, Wake Forest!!

I don’t care how bad Wake is this season – this win means a lot. In the history of NC State Basketball, ONLY Les Robinson and Herb Sendek had losing records against Wake Forest. It is imperative that NC State exercises its dominance over the Demon Deacons again. So on Saturday – despite Skip Prosser’s FIVE YEAR head start on Sidney Lowe – the Pack’s new coach starts on the right foot in this important intra-state rivalry.

* Take a quick look at some of these statistics about the history of sweeps in this series and note the discrepency in the long term history of the rivalry compared to the recent performance of the last 16 years.

On Saturday the Wolfpack didn’t waste another great shooting night by playing good defense and improving our performance on the boards. The Pack shot a blistering 60% from the floor, 45% from three point territory and 79% from the free throw line!! Unreal shooting and kudos should go out to most of the usual suspects with extra credit to Dennis Horner!

Boxscore | S6’s Analysis < = is always super!

Great comments in our comments section of the blog. Thanks to all! I thought that we would elevat the following:

I was thrilled to see Sidney go to the bench so much. Stealing minutes as I call it. We created so much offense with the 1-3-1 that it really took some pressure off of our half court game. Lengthening the bench sends a message to our guys to play hard, because you can take a seat for a while to catch your breath. The effort on our part was so much better today. We can be competitive when we work like this, although I don’t expect Mr. Fells to shoot like that every game. Dennis Horner is going to be a nice player. I don’t think a superstar, but a nice solid player for us.

I even got my wish for the new year that I posted earlier – 5 scrubs on the floor for the conclusion of an ACC road victory. Sidney Lowe – I think this guy can coach.

Some more Sunday morning comments:

* I don’t care how

* You can click here for some video highlights from WRAL-TV that includes Brandon Costner’s dunk. Surely someone will get this and Courtney Fells’ slam on YouTube in the coming days!

* Don’t ignore this entry on Sidney Lowe’s inclusion of David Thompson yesterday.

* Don’t miss GoPack’s hard work and great coverage. (Link here)

Some of our ‘live blog’ comments from the first 10 minutes of the game follow. We LOVE THE recognition of State’s recent inability / unwillingness to draw charges right before the Pack turned it around and had its best defensive half of the year in drawing at least three or four charges in the second half!

Additionally, the Trevor Ferguson comments foretold the playing time that Darrell Davis inherited as the game evolved. I think Coach Lowe may have altered his strategy for the rest of the year as the lack of offensive firepower that Davis, Neiman and Ferguson provide is outweighed by the other positive impacts of their presence on the court.

1st Half comments —

Not an all out liveblog. Just some comments during the game.

* Watching us just dribble can be awfully painful. Grant and Fells are just scary with their dribbles and the lack of fundamentals of some of their initial passes.

* When was the last time NC State took a charge? I just watched Gavin Grant literally RUN away from the opportunity to stop penetration and help Dennis Horner by taking a charge. The result? Two free points for the Deacs. You won’t see that in the boxscore.

* Nice to see Fells shooting so well and asserting himself offensively. Four three pointers in the first 16 minutes of the game. Wow! A shooting guard that can shoot (and slash the way that Fells can slash) will do wonders to free up everyone else on the court.

* Nice to see Grant slashing a little more and generally making better decisions than in recent games.

* Wake has generally worked hard to keep Costner somewhat quiet. Nice to see everyone else stepping up.

* Give State credit for significant improvement on our defensive boards.

* Ben McCauley hasn’t been as active as State needs; but the Pack has been able to build an 11 point lead with four minutes to play in the first half. This is good news. We have to hope that the Pack doesn’t completely forget Ben in the second half when/if Wake starts to make runs. Sure points (let’s call them “highly efficient offensive possessions”) that arise from getting the ball in McCauley’s hands will be key to the Pack maintaining the lead.

* Trevor Ferguson will not get many minutes if he doesn’t do more with them.

Who’s that guy wearing number 4?

  2. 98st8 01/13/2007 at 12:59 PM #

^ that would be superman… he came out of nowhere

  3. 98st8 01/13/2007 at 1:01 PM #

do we seriously have 50 points after 1/2 of basketball against an ACC opponent? that was probably the best half of basketball that I have seen in many years from us. The defense was fantastic… I love the trap. Great minutes from everyone. Seems like we will be somewhat rested enetring the second half in relation to other games

  4. packpigskinfan23 01/13/2007 at 1:04 PM #

    Darryl Davis…. #4. Football player.

  5. Rochester 01/13/2007 at 1:05 PM #

I’m reluctant to even say anything until it’s over, but wow. I’ve been crying all year for Sid to go to the bench. We haven’t gotten any scoring from Davis, Nieman or Ferguson (I don’t think), but the intensity has been on an entirely different scale from previous games. Doesn’t hurt that Wake sucks, but we need to beat the teams that we’re better than. There are no moral victories against Wake Forest.

  6. Rochester 01/13/2007 at 1:05 PM #

Darrell Davis is actually #3. Fells is #4.

Ladies and gentlemen…Courtney Fells has come to life!

Davis can give us 5 minutes a game. And I really like watching Brian Nieman play. He’s great at collecting loose balls and has active hands.

Does anyone think it’s a coincidence that we are playing with more confidence and aggression with an 8-man rotation? I sure as hell don’t. I would rather get full effort from our starting 5 for 35 minutes rather than 75% for 38-40 minutes.

    ^ couldn’t agree more BJD95

GREAT, GREAT first half of coaching by Sid

-Starting Fells at the point, freeing Gavin to abuse LD Williams on drives
-Using our big guards and forwards to pressure Wake’s undersized ballhandlers
-The 1-3-1 with traps in the halfcourt “corners”
-Stealing minutes from Nieman, Fergie, Darrell Davis, even Justin Clark!

McCauley is the key to our team. We were able to protect him after he picked up the second foul and still extend the lead. He’ll be back and fresh for next half.

As for Wake…wow. You can tell they have some talented players but they don’t seem to have much of an offensive gameplan…and we KNOW they can’t play D on anybody under Prosser. I would beg Ish Smith to shoot a 3 – he passed on an absolute wide open opportunity earlier.

I would like to live blog the 2nd half, but I can’t change TVs. The living room has been good luck so far.

My heart can’t handle blowing or nearly blowing an 18-point lead. Let’s have an uneventful second half – OK, guys?

It is crtically important to get that 1st ACC win so we don’t have the pressure of “what if we go 0-16?” hanging over our heads. Plus, we’d jump ahead of Duke AND Maryland!

  11. dthompson44 01/13/2007 at 1:11 PM #

ten points off their turnovers–only two the other way…
    has that happened before recently?

  12. Jeremy Hyatt 01/13/2007 at 1:12 PM #

I don’t have coverage in Boston, but I just signed up on ACCSelect.com for free 15 day to watch the second half, and the video looks good.

lets not get too excited, because Wake is a pretty aweful team, but the defense looks much better. THey’re leaving some open shooters, but it’s a product of the trapping zone as opposed to lack of effort. Costner in particular was looking much better that usual defending the screen. I saw him a few plays in a row jump out hard in front of a pick to cut off the passing lane, which is something no one on the team has been doing this year.

  14. BJD95 01/13/2007 at 1:13 PM #

Nieman has 4 rebounds in the first half.

  15. vtpackfan 01/13/2007 at 1:21 PM #

Hell yeah it’s great to watch that half. I would caution that this is carbon copy WF BB to this point. The second half will be a real dog fight with alot of intensity, IMO. Again the 8 men is a better solution to the “six pack”, that is a no briner. I would caution anyone who thinks we could move into this rotation against just any ACC team. WF or Miami should be the ideal time to go into the bench. Maybe a pattern from here out, but maybe not. I’ll wait and to hear what Coach says about it at the end of the game.

Love the extension on D today. Mixing man-to-man and 1-3-1 nicely, while picking up pressure on ball handlers after mid-court in both sets. Getting out and running from our defence is always exciting to watch. The weave on top with a three from Costner or Fells is beatiful, especially with McCauley on the bench. It’s high percentage and simple. It allows our halfcourt an easy opportunity at a three once inawhile without needing a true pg to set up the play. It is another case where I think Coach Lowe is givin these guys enough structure to put them in position, but there intensity and concentration will result in whether they can ultimately pull one out. Let’s keep up the running and intesity and hope we don’t run into foul trouble. Go Pack!

Oh man Courtney just got screwed. That was just a beastly dunk. He has crazy athleticism.

  17. Mr O 01/13/2007 at 1:26 PM #

Wake is horrible. If they end finishing in last place, then there will be a lot of heat on Prosser going into next year. Wake going through a coaching change would benefit us IMO.

  18. Mr O 01/13/2007 at 1:28 PM #

Fells can spectacular plays. However, it would be great if he could not make stupid plays too.

  19. Jeremy Hyatt 01/13/2007 at 1:30 PM #

Werner can watch Horner on TV and say “that could have been me”.

  20. tvp 01/13/2007 at 1:31 PM #

I like the move to post Horner on Smith there, though it almost backfired.

  21. Jeremy Hyatt 01/13/2007 at 1:34 PM #

Mr O: when your star guard is M. Drum, you got problems.

  22. Mr O 01/13/2007 at 1:35 PM #

    Horner is good.

  23. Jeremy Hyatt 01/13/2007 at 1:40 PM #

    holy shit Costner!

  24. highstick 01/13/2007 at 1:40 PM #

Kick butt, dudes! I’m gonna fly my State flag on the front porch if we get our first ACC win!!!!!!!!
