Good news, bad news for NC State and the New York Jets.

Former Wolfpack safety Andre Maddox was released from the Jets practice squad this week.

Additionally, Jets’ wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery earned an honor on USA Today’s 15th annual All-Joe Team of “NFL’s ‘grunts’ whose work doesn’t often show up in statistics but is integral to the success of any football team”. (Link)

New coach, new life, new Jets deep threat. Nice complement to another rugged mug, Laveranues Coles.

While one former Wolfpack defensive back was being released in New York, another was being signed in Denver:

The Broncos signed running back Tory Fleming, quarterback Darrell Hackney, defensive end Carlos Hall, linebacker T.J. Hollowell, punter Eddie Johnson, tight end Teyo Johnson, guard Kevin McLamont, tackle Jacob Rogers, linebacker Cameron Vaughn and defensive back Lamont Reid.

Although it comes after the Darrent Williams tragedy, I am glad to see Lamont get another shot. Like every other former State defender, I expect him to eventually earn a starting position and get a lot of opportunities to showcase his talents with other teams throwing away from Champ Bailey.
Speaking of former DB’s, what became of Brian Williams this season? I remember him signing a huge contract in the offseason and then getting into some trouble with the law. Anybody know what kind of year he had or if he even played?

This is promising news for Lamont. However, these signings seem like the kind of end-of-season transactions that are implemented for the sole reason of receiving salary cap credit towards the 2007 season. Usually these types of contracts have little guaranteed money; the majority of compensation could only be earned by reaching practically un-obtainable incentives. The Panthers have used this approach recently with the late-season promotings of FB Steven Jackson and QB Brett Basanez from the practice squad.
Regardless, its a great opportunity for Lamont and, without doubt, he’ll show ’em what he’s got!

Also, Andre Maddox would be a great fit for the Panthers secondary. They clearly struggled this year and it may be Minter’s last.

Brian Clark had a very costly kick return fumble in week 13. And though he still returned kicks the following week, he was replaced for week 15 and hasnt sniffed the field since.

I’m not sure what his status is going to be for next year. Shanny is pretty tough on turnovers.
