No lead is safe against Lowe’s Wolfpack

Granted, the ACC season hasn’t started yet, and granted NC State does have four losses, although none of the “embarrassing” kind against an outmatched opponent. So don’t think this is a starry-eyed rah-rah post that’s blind to the Pack’s record. Instead, it’s a trend-spotting assessment of a very thin but very young Wolfpack team with an eye toward the future.

It’s an old saying, but it is that way because it has the ring of truth: a team reflects the character of its coach. That’s good news when your coach is the scrappy, resourceful and cool-headed Sidney Lowe. Going back to their first game under the new head coach, Lowe’s Wolfpack has shown a never-say-die resiliency, repeatedly charging back from deficits and frequently winning.

The following are the deficits that Lowe’s short-handed squad have overcome so far in their 10-4 pre-ACC campaign:

Wofford: 9 points (54-45) at half (winning 92-88)
Michigan: 12 points (16-4) in the first half (winning 74-67)
East Carolina: 15 points (34-19) in the first half (winning 64-57)
UNC-Greensboro: 11 points (58-47) in the second half (winning 95-93 in OT)

Of course, there was also the insufficient comeback against No. 9 Alabama, when the Wolfpack trailed by 23 in the second half but closed to within six and forced a turnover late in the game before losing by 7, 82-75. (The Pack also trailed at halftime to Gardner-Webb by three, winning 88-76.)

The lesson here is: Don’t count Sidney Lowe’s team out when they’re trailing. This team believes it can come back, and most of the time, they’re right.

I was simply praising Sid for the job he has done. I brought up the ASU coach to point out the issues we had – they are now having too. Granted, the cupboard was not loaded there, but it was certainly more loaded than we had. I was saying how exicting our games are, not like the 20-18 halftime scores we were used to. It takes a reference point to make a comparison, and 10-4 is considerably better than i would have expected at this point. Yeah, I guess my comment was an indirect slap at another coach, but I was really trying to show what a great job Sid is doing.

“I am thrilled Sid is here and it may not be fair to compare, but this team would be 2-12 without Sid.”
** Come on now..2-12!! I am no herb lover, but 2-12.. get real.

” Someone wrote earlier where was McCauley last year – now that he can play basketball he is a beast. Never had the chance last year.”ben did get minutes last year but he was playing behind Ced, BRack, GG. He benefited b/c of Costners injury b/c before the injury Costner was getting more minutes. Need to cut cut Sendek some slack in this regartd as well.

” Give Sid the talent that had been here and I know we would have seen different (for the better) results. 5 straight NCAA’s – with Sid, we might have seen some final fours and conference champsionships too.”

This is interesting to think about Sid coaching last year’s squad with Ced to boot. I think they would have had a good season. Ben may not have played anymore with Sid coaching than Sendek LAST YEAR.

    Otherwise party on!!

I don’t know what kind rankings Arizona States last few recruiting classes were. They have more depth than us, but I do not know if the players they have are all that good, to begin with. Sid’s working with guys, who are part of Top 25 recruiting classes (Horner included, assuming the 2006 class had stayed intact). I don’t know if ASU has such highly regarded recruiting classes. I don’t think so though.

I was simply praising Sid for the job he has done.

I don’t know what a good comparison is to gauge how good Sid’s doing as our coach this year. Herb at ASU is not a good comparison, for reasons stated earlier, in my opinion.

I think Sid’s doing a good job and has brought a much needed shot of enthusiam from the fanbase.

Now only if those fans could take their internet-chat-room voiceferous support to the RBC Center every night and help fill the building up every night…

Overall, Sidney has done a solid job with this team. I thought NYCfan offered some nice perspective with a lot of facts for us to consider. We are in Lowe’s honeymoon period, so anything that happens will be looked at favorably by 99% of NC State fans. I was going to say something to the same effect(with a lot less detail), but was afraid to do so for fear of drawing criticism.

A year ago if anyone from NC had mentioned ASU I would have thought they were talking about the school in Boone.

I for one am totally discusted with the lack of fans showing up at the RBC center. We have turned into what UNC used to be. It makes me sick every time I go to a game. Late arriving crowds, leaving early, not even showing up. Once again the ECU fans almost outnumberd us at our home game. It makes me sick. Step up NCSU fans and support your team no matter who they are playing, we have become spoiled and we are gettting more like unc fans every day.

  7. cpwolfpackfan 01/03/2007 at 6:28 PM #

I think it is also very disrespectful to coach lowe with the lack of fans at the game

  8. redfred2 01/03/2007 at 6:34 PM #

ShoostingGuard, sorry but I have to totally disagree with your final “Could have been better” statement.

By just how much would you estimate?

    We’re 10-4

Largest loss is by 13, that’s a measly thirteen points, to a top ten program.

We’ve had only two double digit losses of 11 and 13 points, not one blowout.

We beat a Michigan team that is now 12-3 overall.

No losses to the “should always beat” programs.

We haven’t been embarrassed by anyone, and there isn’t anyone out there who can say that they were not expecting to be by this point.

I haven’t ever seen even the most talented team on the planet play a perfect 40 minutes yet.

Is this team supposed to, or is the coaching staff expected to completely understand their personnel at this point, to come out blazing and jumping all over every opponent early, at this stage in the season? Or is a young team, and a new brand coaching staff, still allowed to make adjustments right now that keep us in games, and winning more than anyone ever believed we would?

If anyone now, is saying that we have only beaten the teams that we are supposed to have beaten, that is total BS and it’s based totally on hindsight. I’m just wondering how much better it needs to be, to be considered a satisfactory effort on the part of these players and coaches.

No matter what some of you people think and are beginning to expect, there is a limit. I’d say due to their lack of experience and getting comfortable with one another’s abilities, that they’ve performed about as close to that limit, as any one of us could reasonably expect thus far.

    Late arriving crowds

I was in town for the UNC-W game (I live out of state) and this being my second trip to the RBC Center (I was able to go to a game a couple of years ago), I was confused about where I could park – very few signs for the non-parking permit crowd, which caused me to miss the first few minutes of the game.

The RBC Center is also pretty big, so getting from point A to B takes some added time, which I hadn’t factored, also.

I don’t know if others are having similar problems or it was just me not knowing my way around.

  10. NCSUwolfpack4Life 01/03/2007 at 7:57 PM #

No, the reason we don’t have that many large crowds is because we’re playing UNC-W, Easy-U, UNC-G etc etc etc…. When we have ACC games, i gaurantee you we’ll sell out on those games.

Also, if we had Ferg or Atsur in the UVA game rather than Nieman we would have beaten them by 5-10 points.

  11. Gene 01/03/2007 at 8:35 PM #

No, the reason we don’t have that many large crowds is because we’re playing UNC-W, Easy-U, UNC-G etc etc etc….

Attendance for the Michigan game: 13135
Attendance for the Alabama game: 16456

By contrast attendance for other schools, with similar size stadiums (I’m picking games at random):

Syracuse attendance for their game against Holy Cross: 19,235
Syracuse attendance for their game against St. Francis(NY): 18,280

Kentucky’s home game against Mississippi Valley State: 22,879
Kentucky’s home game against Indiana: 24,253

There is something wrong with NCSU Fans not going to home games.

Don’t know the solution, but it’s not because of who we play at home. Other schools can fill up their stadium against cupcakes better than we can against a Top 10 school, like ‘Bama.

Those two schools also haven’t had to suffer through ten years of Herb, and were predicted to be top tourney teams. You have a down year, attendance does go down. It will go up as the firepower goes up. Give it 1-2 years.

Please get the Sendek off my thread. Thanks.

Those two schools also haven’t had to suffer through ten years of Herb

Kentucky fans aren’t really in love with Tubby Smith, from what I read, but they still show up to games.

It has nothing to do with the team we play, or who our previous coaches are, we just don’t turn up to games.

It will go up as the firepower goes up. Give it 1-2 years.

Either you go to games and pull for your team, every chance you get or you shouldn’t call yourself a fan.

We aren’t a terrible team, and so far, for the past 10+ years have been winning more than we’ve been losing, so there should be no excuse about “firepower”.

Maybe Raleigh such a happening town, folks have so much more to do like going to clubs, the theatre, bars, restaurants, etc. than show up to a basketball game….I could accept that…I might even be glad for it…but otherwise the RBC Center should have better attendance for NCSU games…

  15. BoKnowsNCS71 01/04/2007 at 9:30 AM #

Agree. Lets don’t talk about (he who shall not be named) or his record at that school. In a few weeks the W-L records could be the same or worse. It’s just not productive.

Good news! Pack’s Atsur set to play against BC

N.C. State point guard Engin Atsur should return Saturday for the ACC game against Boston College. — per the N&O and Coach Lowe.

  17. kool k 01/04/2007 at 10:01 AM #

That is great news! With Atsur back, hopefully our incredible versatility can overcompensate for the lack of depth.

Here’s the best I’ve found recently about NCSU basketball, a quote from Tom Suiter’s blog (http://www.wral.com/sports/blogpost/1127065/):

“I’ve been really impressed with Ben McCauley. Why didn’t Herb Sendek play him last season? He’s good, and he plays hard.”

    EXACTLY!!!!

I’m so glad we have Sid as our coach!!!

  19. redfred2 01/05/2007 at 1:44 PM #

Suiter, like the rest of the local media personalities, apparently hasn’t had the time to see past the very obvious with regards to NC State in recent years. I can’t fault them too much for that because up until right now, there wasn’t any evidence, or a story worthy of print, that could have backed with facts anyway. I am happy to say that is no longer the case. It’s no longer all about the coach, or a style of play anymore, and the media is finally being forced to focus it’s attention on the kids wearing Wolfpack uniforms these days. Just as it should be.

  20. redfred2 01/05/2007 at 7:16 PM #

I’m glad he’s back and also I’m hoping that Atsur has noticed that he needs to pick up the pace over what he has done in the past. This offense is designed to make a quick transition from defense to offense without the need to totally stop play to accomplish it. It also lessens the opposing team’s ability to set up on D every time down.

The deliberate walk across the time line, and the many pauses to evaluate in the back court, that cause the whole offense reset and start it’s motion all over, are no longer needed anymore. He needs to get rid of those slow down tactics and be ready to attack the moment he gets the ball down the court. Two points, three points, whatever the case may be, it no longer matters if they come 4 seconds, or 34 seconds into the time clock. Just score and score often.
