Lowe: Duke was Aggressive

Sidney Lowe and Monte Towe did not like the officiating on Saturday. It was obvious throughout the afternoon by their reactions to things on the bench. Of course, officiating had nothing to do with Saturday’s result…but, who says that it won’t be important in the future?

In short, I liked what I saw from the coaches working the refs on Saturday. The following quote was in the N&O on Sunday. (Link)

“They were very aggressive,” NCSU coach Sidney Lowe said. “They were doing whatever they had to do — push, grab, hold, whatever. I don’t mean anything illegal. They just play hard.”

anyone notice that BC just landed two 4-star OL prospects? Wow.

I’m hoping that Jerrail McCuller and Julian Williams can handle the tackle spots next year. McCuller got in late in the season and did a decent job. Williams hasn’t played yet.

McCuller and Crouch are both about 340 pounds. So we’d certainly have the size on their side of the ball.

I assume that K. Heppe and Andy Barbee will be the other guard and center.

Lots of youngsters at linebacker. Avery Vogt, Ray Michel and NAte Irving were all names we heard a lot about. It will be interesting to see who actually manages to earn some playing time.

I noticed the “mention” about something going on with K and Towe after the game??? What happened???

Had a funny lunch today with two of my Tarhole buds. They were fussing cause the referees weren’t giving them any calls during the Ga Tech game! I guess they’ve come to expect those things as a “given”!

wolfpacker is reporting that we may have found our LB coach. If he takes the job, I’ll be thrilled – he has one hell of a resume. It’s one of those deals where you wonder what he did wrong.

Towe approached K after the game during the hand-shakes and proceeded to give him what looked to be a mouthful. K didn’t really respond in any way, just sort of looked at Towe and moved forward. I don’t know if anything should be made of it. Hell, they could have even been congratulatory words, but based on what I saw, I doubt it. I also heard a caller on the radio who was there say that it appeared to be a heated exchange on Towe’s end. Would love to hear more from anyone that knows.

Benching players right now is like putting a kid in time out in his bedroom with all his favorite toys. It’s an empty threat since its transparent your just trying to screw with him. They know Nieman, Fergueson, Albritton, and Davis aren’t taking over the roles of starters in the system. Only with time and a build up of players can you start even thinking of managing that way.

Who here thinks legends such as K and Williams have even sniffed a team like this in terms of coaching for 20 years. I know K’s third lower lumbar vertabrae would fall out if had to lead this Pack team right now (I’m sure someone here thinks they would be the most glorious team at defense in the ACC).

Good comment above about effort and frustration being blurred and often confused. Come on guy’s, everyone is human, even scholarship players. They aren’t point shaving so we know it’s not just a jog up and down the court. It’s an all around frustrating mess right know. Be patient.

I’m excited for Hickson’s debut. I don’t know if Smith is even coming for sure, but I bet he would make a great offensive weapon for Coach Lowe (not sure about the D). Johnny sounds like a great kid who could be another role player like Horner and should be counted on night in and night out. Honestly, the Johnson and Degand combo scare the sheet out of me. Who knows how they will react, and I’m afraid the weight of the NC State world will be on theirs and Coach Lowe’s shoulders. On the flip side anything will be a thousand times better this year. Not to jinx any comeback of Atsur, but is this the single worst senior season by any Wolfpacker ever?

Anyways, someone above was getting all flustered because we all needed perspective on this, and “don’t hang any banners for next year quite yet”. The only perspective here that is needed is that the help that is on the way can be seen on the horizon and is getting closer. As we are getting nearer it appears to be looking like something that could heal this frustration. That’s it. We stunk against Dook, period.

Lastly, Fells did some things that were obviously unsuccessful in that game. Anyone notice that early in the year when he didn’t have a solid game it was because he was just absent and out of the flow. I see a difference in his attitude and he looks more willing to go for it. Sid is working with him, and some may say he should just blend into the background so not to hurt the ball club. If Coach Lowe likes what he see then we will continue to see Courtney pushing out there, in goods ways and bad.

The defense, or lack there of is pretty simple, IMHO. Sean Williams is out and all of a sudden the “Bullies of BC” look pretty ordinary on D. If Shelden Williams or Josh McRoberts were never on Duke then I think you would see teams take right to the basket on them. Now take McRoberts and Paulus out and you see what the NC State basketball team has looked like from day one with Big Ced gone with no back up and Atsur out with no back up. And I see people here typing hypothetically that a Sendek team would have better prepared. Looking at what the roster is made up with and who is primarily responsible for it’s make-up, that might well be the opinion most loosely built on reality I have heard in some time.

Well, coach K had a rough start of it. It’s not like he’s always been at the top of the mountain.

I just saw Saturday as an opportunity lost. Probably for the best, this keeps the hope lukewarm – just happy w/ an NIT bid.

Yeah, those Engelland (sp?)/Tissaw/Taylor teams K had after his first year at Dook were awful (well, by ’83, he had a terrific freshman class, but they were freshmen at a time when very few went pro) — though some of that was of his own making as he chose to let youth take their lumps to build for the future (Vince Taylor had some not so kind things to say about that long ago). I think Roy inherited a pretty thin bunch in KU in 1988, but doubtful it was as thin as this year’s State team.
