Duke Game Entry

Duke BBa

I’ll be traveling for the Duke game, so I encourage any of the authors who are around on Saturday to add previews and reviews of Saturday’s game.

However, before we get going we have to highlight Sidney Lowe‘s perfect comments today from the N&O:

RALEIGH — It’s probably safe to say you’ll never hear N.C. State coach Sidney Lowe referring to a Duke game or North Carolina game as being, well, “1/16” of the ACC schedule. Asked today about the importance of facing the Blue Devils Saturday at the RBC Center, Lowe said:

“They all count as one game, but when you’ve been in this area and you’ve been in this league, this conference, you know it’s a big game. Duke, Carolina, N.C. State, Wake Forest … those are big games.

“It’s not just another game. No, it’s not. I like to say it’s a big game.”

Sounds like someone who played at State, doesn’t it? Someone really understands the nature of the Big Four rivalries and how much such games mean to the fan base.

For the record, Coach Lowe is currently 1-0 vs the Big Four.

I agree with redfred. With former Pack legends, future recruits and alot of die hard fans in attendance I would have preferred to get blown out by Duke with our walk on players inthe second half. Listless play in inexcusable. I don’t know how you can watch film of this and hope to turn it into a positive. I think it’s more the gut feelin of how horrile it feels that will have to push players to better concentrate and execute the next time around. The film would say, “and here it doesn’t look like you know what the hell your doing…again”.

I was at the game so I missed the pre-game coverage. Was there any talk about Engin? I know coach expected he’d play today. There’s only 11 regular season games left, are we going to see him? Another week or two and he won’t have enough time left to get his game back before the season is over.

    Nice quote from Coach K.
“I respect NC State and outside of our fans I love theirs the most. They support their team so well, and for us to play so well in this environment I’m very pleased.”

I was thinking same as redfred also. Total lack of effort. Stupid passes. Guys were sleepwalking out there. Duke got into their heads immediately. If the starters don’t want to give any effort, sent their butts to the locker room to get their street clothes.

I’ll throw in some random positives. Turnovers were much better in the 2nd half (only 4 I think), the rebound numbers weren’t terrible, and Duke didn’t have their best 3 point shooting of the year (which we have done for some other teams).

  6. Rochester 01/20/2007 at 8:33 PM #

^Other positives. No one was killed. No one was injured. No one was kicked off the team for conduct undetrimental to the program.

Not to give Herb too much credit, but maybe there was a reason Fells didn’t play much last year (aside from the upperclassmen ahead of him). He’s got so much physical ability yet he looks so lost out there sometimes. His two “dunks” really cost us. First miss was a momentum killer. Second technical was a seven-point swing (missed two for us, plus two free throws and a three ball for them). That was about the end of any realistic hope we had to mount a comeback.

Duke never doubled down on McCauley and McRoberts handled him. Not that it really mattered because unlike McRoberts’ teamates, McCauley was sorrounded by dazed and confused participants. I was hoping for Big Ben have some success in the spotlight, but on this day the only praise going out to State was of the canned pitty variety. Blaaahh!

Question- is it ok to blast the effort today? I knew I said I wasn’t going to be critical this year- but I assumed the guys would play smarter and harder then what they did. You put the blame on the players or on Lowe for that?

  9. wayofthemaster 01/20/2007 at 11:09 PM #

Agree with a lot of the other posts that mentioned, oh how can I say it in a politically correct manner? A few of our players lack… ahem, basketball savvy. Of course, we all know what that is code for… don’t we?

  10. redfred2 01/20/2007 at 11:24 PM #

^Both, but defintely the players moreso in this particular game.

If we aren’t playing fundamentally sound basketball as the year progresses, than I will have some reservations about Coach Lowe. He says all the right things in the media, but at some point we need to see better play / player improvement as the season goes on, even if it doesn’t translate to wins.

  12. GAWolf 01/21/2007 at 9:48 AM #

Mark my words: without a major attitude change from Fells and Grant, they will not touch the court next season. Both play lazy and uninspired. If they are examples of the best Lowe and Co. have to work with, we’re in a lot worse shape than I realized starting the season. The performance those two guys left on the floor last night was sickening.

Hopefully this week we have “Dunk Practice” if nothing else.

The main reason for the debacle was not a lack of effort or lazy passes or bonehead moves, it was in-your-face defense by dook which is their trademark. We haven’t played anyone that played D tougher or as tough this year. When we did play against teams who played tough D and had more athletes then we lost and we will lose in the future.

Our team is very young and thin and has no floor leader thanks to someone else. When we get that PG which some don’t think we need then we will have a better chance. It will take much more to become a good team but that is a start. I believe we need to develop a stifling man D such as dook runs but it isn’t possible until the numbers are there.

Had dook played a passive zone then we had a good chance to run our sets and take deliberate threes rather than rushed attempts while flying down the floor. But everyone knows that dook will play their style so we have to build to combat it and incorporate one of our own to turn the tables on them.

Let’s hold together and wait for some additional bodies next year.

  14. redfred2 01/21/2007 at 12:16 PM #

I’d have to watch the game again to see, which I can’t, but on the defensive end it appeared our guys (esp Grant) were always looking back over their shoulders, playing the ball and trying to anticipate the pass, instead of staying in fundamentally sound defensive position. They need to FOCUS on who they’re actually responsible for at the time, limit that one player’s ability to score, and forget about the rest.

  15. KChill 01/21/2007 at 3:06 PM #

Even one on one in the post our big men couldn’t score. Looks like Hickson and Smith are a lot closer to starting as freshman than i thought.

I totally disagree with Legacyman, but I reckon that’s okay.

  17. legacyman 01/22/2007 at 7:07 AM #

    Gawolf,

You have every right to disagree with me and it is okay. But I would prefer that you give some reasons.

“Fells has a near zero basketball IQ. Our guys could give a damn if they get smoked by a rival at home. Until Sid can change the culture, it’s going to be a long time coming before our rivals have to take any notice. Bottom line, NCSU was not represented well today.”

The culture is an interesting topic that should be explored.
We have had five years of this tepic, non aggressive offfense and it seems the players do not know how to play anything else.

I have to admit I am a little concerned about our defense. I think I will be positive and assume this is not what we will do in the future. Once we have more players we can play better defense and yank anyone that does not.

This is going to be a tough year. Ironically, I think Herb would have done better with this team. It is built to run his crazy offense and thus it is hard to be more traditional. Sidney is in a tough spot, he could probably do a little better run a more PO style offense but he needs to show a better offense to get top recruits. He has the round peg syndrome but I believe he is doing the right thing.
