Duke Game Entry

Duke BBa

I’ll be traveling for the Duke game, so I encourage any of the authors who are around on Saturday to add previews and reviews of Saturday’s game.

However, before we get going we have to highlight Sidney Lowe‘s perfect comments today from the N&O:

RALEIGH — It’s probably safe to say you’ll never hear N.C. State coach Sidney Lowe referring to a Duke game or North Carolina game as being, well, “1/16” of the ACC schedule. Asked today about the importance of facing the Blue Devils Saturday at the RBC Center, Lowe said:

“They all count as one game, but when you’ve been in this area and you’ve been in this league, this conference, you know it’s a big game. Duke, Carolina, N.C. State, Wake Forest … those are big games.

“It’s not just another game. No, it’s not. I like to say it’s a big game.”

Sounds like someone who played at State, doesn’t it? Someone really understands the nature of the Big Four rivalries and how much such games mean to the fan base.

For the record, Coach Lowe is currently 1-0 vs the Big Four.

Ferguson looks so slow out there. It’s like his legs move at half speed.

  2. stlouiswufpacker 01/20/2007 at 4:53 PM #

Ferguson looks like a 12 year old getting in on the pickup game with the high school kids..

I hate to be cruel, but watching Trevor Ferguson is like one of those “I’m the Star for NC State” videos they advertise in the Wolfpacker. Only no one doctored it up to make his plays work. He’s batting about .500 on his passes, which means if he passes the ball twice on a possession it’s almost a guaranteed turnover.

I’d like to blame the refs for us losing, but the bad calls only account for about a third of the difference. We were so close to making this a game, then the pants hit the ankles and the Devils pulled away. Real shame, too, because if we cut into that lead a little more and Duke got called for another foul, K would have gotten T’d up. Now he’s had a chance to cool off.

One bright spot is Chris Simms and his brother are flanking TOB. The week off has been jsut that . 15 TO’s. I am a little shocked that we haven.t tried to post up Fells or Grant. I know we have no point guard, so they matter of who feeds the post is a problem, but Fells can’t post up Paulus? The threes one by Costner, one by Grant, and one horrendous attempt by Fells, make me think these guys are having touble concentrating (that and the pourous defense). I hope they figure it out so they can compete at a higher level in the future. You just can’t come out flat in the ACC and expect things to come your way eventually.

I was one who thought we matched up well with Dook and I was sorely mistaken. We can’t do anything to them to make them react so far, period. Everything is them dong things to us. Hopefully Sid can ave that talk to them about doing things the way they want to and forcing the opponent to react.

Trevor has been bad but come on folks, it’s not his fault. He’s not ready, and it’s a terrible situation to be thrust into. Thank Herb. If he were around we wouldn’t have this problem of no point guard. With his offense Atur could still play with a bum hamstring, I’m sure of it.

“NCSU is actually better than dook this year.”

Right. This was supposed to be our season to win a ton of games, and now I feel like it’s slipping away. Now I know how the Chargers feel!

  6. beowolf 01/20/2007 at 5:13 PM #

NC State is obviously not better than Duke.

At this rate I’m hoping we’re only less than 20 points worse. Right now they look absolutely terrible. This could be a 30+ debacle.

  7. Lee Fowler 01/20/2007 at 5:23 PM #

Ferguson should have transferred at halftime. Why prolong the wait until May?

Grant is absolutely horrific for a junior, alleged leader.

  8. redfred2 01/20/2007 at 5:23 PM #

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a pick throw a player’s concentration so totally off track, like they have done to the Pack today. I mean a Duke player steps out and our guys just stop…then don’t pick up anyone at all…and either forget what they’re doing or who they’re responsible for.

4 tics available for the va game
    this is awefull

  10. Astral Rain 01/20/2007 at 5:37 PM #

At least Lavin is talking up NCSU as an institution on there. We’re not getting slammed like we normally do by the announcers.

    Give him credit.

  11. Jamie 01/20/2007 at 5:38 PM #

that crap isn’t called for schitzo. thats our problem right there. so what we’re getting smoked by the #14 team at home?there are far too many dark blue shirts in the stands as it is. lets stick by this ragtag bunch thru good and bad. what did you expect at the start of the season?

  12. wolfonthehill 01/20/2007 at 5:41 PM #

No effort. Sid’s approach did not in any way translate to the players today.

  13. Wulfpack 01/20/2007 at 5:42 PM #

Fells has a near zero basketball IQ. Our guys could give a damn if they get smoked by a rival at home. Until Sid can change the culture, it’s going to be a long time coming before our rivals have to take any notice. Bottom line, NCSU was not represented well today.

  14. beowolf 01/20/2007 at 5:45 PM #

That’s a good point about changing the culture. Unfortunately.

  15. Jamie 01/20/2007 at 5:48 PM #

It’s easy to drain the effort out of 18 – 22 year olds when the game is not officiated correctly. The zebra on our end of the floor in the first half had a whistle malfunction, while the guy on the other end couldn’t stop tooting his. End result? Big lead early, crowd removed.

  16. tvp 01/20/2007 at 5:52 PM #

Silly to blame this on the refs – overall they were fine. The problem is that we still don’t have anyting approximating a point guard, and our sixth man is Bryan Nieman (no disrespect to Nieman, but he wouldn’t see the floor for anyone else besides Miami in the ACC). Sid can only do so much folks.

  17. Rochester 01/20/2007 at 5:52 PM #

I’m disappointed in the effort that I witnessed today. Sid said he was up for the big game. No one else looked to be. I hope that this is the last year we have to suffer through lackluster games like this for a long, long time. It’s one thing to lose to a ranked team. It’s another to be embarrassed on your home floor.

  18. Wulfpack 01/20/2007 at 6:01 PM #

Duke is a decent team, but they’re no where near the team they have been in year’s past. They’ll finish near the top of the league simply because their guys take pride in their defense and can hit open shots. They’ll get smoked by more athletic/deeper teams in the NCAA just like last year.

The refs had nothing to do with the outcome of this game. I don’t think Sid appreciates seeing a rival dunk all over you and drain wide open threes on his team on its home floor time after time — just my opinion. Let’s hope this is the end of it. I’d hate to be in the locker room right now.

The effort all around was lackluster. The fans were taken out of the game early and were never heard from again, despite many “boos”.

If we are going to contend this year moving forward, we must defend with a passion. We must eliminate the plague of turnovers. We must get tougher.

The problem is there is no penalty for our guys if they fail to live up to these tenents. Who the hell are you going to bring in?

  19. Gene 01/20/2007 at 6:09 PM #

I expected at least some competitiveness early on, in this game. I don’t know what the cause is, but it seemed like the team didn’t care about winning this one.

We made a lot of bad passes and committed some unforced turnovers, which was our fault – like the players heads just weren’t in the game at all. At one point in the game, we had more turnovers than shot attempts.

I would feel O.K. about this, but I think we played our second worst game of the year (after the loss at Cincy). We might’ve been smoked by BC, but we didn’t quit. Same for the ‘Bama game.

I hope we can play better going forward and the team and coaching staff do a better job getting ready for our next opponent.

  20. redfred2 01/20/2007 at 6:28 PM #

To a man, the first step of every Duke player on the court today had our guys out of position and at a immediate disadvantage. Duke may have some better and higher rated talent, but there is no way that there is that much of a discrepancy.

Fells would not start, maybe not even play at all, if I were coaching that team right now. I think Grant also gets in a rut of sloppy O and absolutely lazy D, and once he does, he cannot come back out of it during a ballgame. Grant needs some playing time on the bench to think about what he is doing out there.

I know someone is going ask who in the world I would replace them with?

I would answer that with…Brian Neiman, Trevor Ferguson, Braxton Albritton, Simon Harris, Davis, it doesn’t really matter. Just someone who wants to play hard. Ferguson admittedly got abused today, but it wasn’t because he wasn’t trying, he was just plain outmatched.

If there is anything I cannot stand it is a player who was given the natural physical ability to play hard, but who doesn’t learn or try to get better.

  21. PapaJohn 01/20/2007 at 6:36 PM #

In the post game Sid did not hesitate to say his team played poorly. He specifically said, “he was disappointed that a couple of the guys did not come to play.”
I respect him for acknowledging the obvious.
There was absolutely no reason we should have been so badly outplayed on our home court. There is no excuse for not giving an all out effort. The crowd was there. The opportunity was there, the team did not take advantage of it.
Gavin was 1 for 6!! Only six shots! Nelson ate his lunch!
I hope Trevor gets better, otherwise I challenge anyone to explain how any college would offer him a scholarship. That was pitiful. There’s got to be some skills we haven’t seen.
Sixteen turnovers in the first half! If we just inbounded the ball to Duke it couldn’t be much worse than that! (sorry, exaggeration)
This was not about depth, not about talent, it was simply about playing solid, fundemental basketball – and we didn’t do it.
I drank the “we match up well w/ Duke” Kool Aid like many did, but I can accept losing to them. But not like that.
I hope they are thoroughly embarrassed when they watch the film because I didn’t see anything to be proud of.
And the worst part of all, I was surrounded by Duke fans.
    What an awful day!

  22. vtpackfan 01/20/2007 at 6:38 PM #

I’ll root for them hard because the schedule says they’re playing. his was a sufferable mess. I feel really awful for the guys whoprobably feel like they let down the Pack. Worst home loss to Duke since ’67. It’s just not in the cards to be competitive night in and night out. I guess it’s still fun to speculate how this team may do the rest of the way out against different opponnets, but not as interesting as it was before this bomb went off. I guess the combination of first time college head coach meets Sendeks Junior Guard is a lethal combination of “don’t get your hopes up”. Oh, well, let’s just move on and root like hell down the road. Hopefully these guys won’t get shown up too many times before the end of the season, and there still could be a surprise or two left in the tank. But it’s not going to be consistency of energy and effort. If they were to pull that off it would be the biggest surprise of all. So long.

  23. Texpack 01/20/2007 at 6:43 PM #

I’ll say it again. The lack of effort and intensity is the most disappointing thing. I thought Sidney should have repeated his substitution pattern of last week. I really think it helped generate some more intensity.

  24. Jeremy Hyatt 01/20/2007 at 6:45 PM #

watched most of the game while on the phone, didn’t want to get off the phone after what I had been seeing, some observations:

I agree that Ferg looked slow, and the glaring problem is careless passing. He looked outmatched. I would recommend he hit the weight room, and trim that sloppy mop so he can see (or wear a headband).

Overall, we were sloppy, outmatched in fundamentals and sense of urgency. Today was a step back. We had a slow start, but then were again outmatched in the second half. What a whipping.

Sid: use this setback as an opportunity
