Ben McCauley Appreciation Thread

The blog was pretty full late last week, and we didn’t get a chance to highlight this excellent article on Big Ben from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Read it and get chills at the confirmation of the rumors we heard throughout the spring – McCauley was very close to transferring, which would have made an 0-16 ACC season a distinct possibility. Instead, he chose to stick it out, and has been the perfect embodiment of toughness – the guy who would walk through a wall if Sid asked him to. He’s also been our best passer by far, despite playing center (and staying out of foul trouble with little bench relief).

The article also has some Sendek-related comments, but let’s not turn this into a Sendek-bashing thread. Instead, please use the comments to praise the play and attitude of Ben McCauley…and imagine what kind of beast he could be next year with Hickson and Tracy Smith diverting some of the defensive attention in the low post.

We ran an entry in mid-December focused on the accolades that Big Ben was deservedly earning at that time.

McCauley has been nothing short of spectacular this year. I can’t imagine where State would be if he had chosen to transfer in the spring as rumored when Coach Lowe took the job. His presence and the fact that we can project him in a Wolfpack uniform for two more seasons produces a huge impact on the projected future success of the program; I expect him to be a growing versatile force for the Pack.

McCauley has turned in consistently strong performances ALL SEASON, none more exciting and surprising than his play against Michigan’s athletic big men two weeks ago. (Anybody see his line for Saturday’s game against Savannah State? Your CENTER led the team in STEALS with five for the evening.)

Our friends at gopack.com have also posted this mildly interesting fluff piece on McCauley, including his thoughts on growing up in a funeral home (like Nate, David, and Claire Fisher).

i could go on and on…

Not to be facetious, but how could you go on? You’ve pretty much listed all the player’s, who’ve seen any kind of significant minutes, other than Ferguson and Atsur.

Ben makes watching our low post game fun.

It’s a joy to be able to watch him this year as his game matures.

    Dunks, 3’s, passes.

    Did I mention fun?

We are seeing the results of a year of maturity with the players who were here last year. We are also experiencing part of a year of a coach who understands the game, has played the game at all levels, has experienced the top of the mountain in college sports, relates well to his new squad of players, is truly one of us and loves his alma mater. How could we not be starting to get the old feeling back. Thank goodness we are free, free at last(sorry for stealing that line).

It’s easy to see why he might have been coaxed to make the jump to Xavier. It’s closer to home and Sean Miller is their head coach. Was he here for Ben’s recruitment or red shirt year? Anyways, great person and player, so glad he stuck it out with Coach Lowe. I hope he continues on the this ascending path because who knows where it will take him.

He is such a good passer that I know with defence and a face up game he could make an NBA roster in a few years. I’m looking forward to this match up with McRoberts and who will get the better of who. I think Sid has been doing a great job considering that Atsur has been out making sure our big men get involved each game early on. I thing saturday will be no different, although I would like to see our big backcourt players post up Scheyer and Paulas. I think we have an advantage there, especially if they try to double with a big and can kick it out to Costner for a three or McCauley for a fifteen footer. The luxury of a guy like Ben is that he fit’s vitually any game plan, and no matter if the strategy isn’t working out he is still giving 110% effort. Season would be a mess w/o him.

vtpackfan – Sean Miller was long gone when McCauley arrived. Also, McCauley didn’t redshirt.

Perhaps the poster is confused because McCauley rode the pine last year quite a bit for whatever reason. It is a shame that he didn’t see more action but that was a coaching decision.

Talking about the court awareness, McCauley said in the interview that he learned a lot from Illian Etimov. I could say something to the affect that I’m just glad to see at least one of them having a fair opportunity to apply their skills while still wearing a Wolfpack uniform. But I won’t.

“McCauley rode the pine last year quite a bit for whatever reason. It is a shame that he didn’t see more action but that was a coaching decision.”

The reason was he was playing behind a 5th year senior and a 1st round lottery pick. We forget too easily.

At this point I think Ben is as good of a passer as Evtimov…. maybe not as slick, but certainly as effective.

He’s a good passer – but not quite as good as Ilian yet. Give him time though….If Ilian had been able to play and practice more -man. When he was a freshman, some of his passes were unreal.

    You’re getting me started.

Are trying to tell me that there wasn’t any reason to work in a player like Ben McCauley into the line up last season, with some decent minutes in spots? Say like, against Wake? On how many different ocassions? It wasn’t only McCauley, but it was a whole team of talented and experienced players, playing “behind somebody,” a lot more than they ever should have been.

  12. burnbarn 01/16/2007 at 11:37 AM #

he did get 7 minutes a game last year. I certainly am not trying to defend anyone. I think it was clear that Ben had talent last year but coach decided it best for the team not to play him as much. Was it right or wrong? I don’t know.

  13. choppack1 01/16/2007 at 11:58 AM #

Last year was last year – and since he was playing the 4 and 5 spot, he probably got the appropriate playing time based on what I saw. He was behind Ced, Ilian and Brackman – that he even got 7 minutes a game speaks volumes how much Sendek actually thought about him when you compare his minutes to Fells.

I give Lowe credit for developing McCauley’s game in the low post and running offense that really emphasizes his skills. However, I don’t think you can get on Sendek for McCauley not playing more last year.

  14. redfred2 01/16/2007 at 1:16 PM #

Are you guys sure about the seven minutes? I think it was much less than that.

All I can say is that it would have really hard to detect certain (interior)skills before right now anyway. I guess practice sessions must have stayed right on point and also left no way to see what McCauley may have been capable of on the interior last season. Kinda like Cedric’s one game, but beyond that I seemed to have missed out on anything that would warrant an NBA lottery pick concerning his play last season.

  15. choppack1 01/16/2007 at 1:25 PM #

rf – Last year, it was obvious that McCauley was aggressive. He fought hard for position and would work to get his shot off. He didn’t seem to have the quickness, the footwork, post moves and the overall b’ball IQ that he does now – but he wanted the ball when he came in.

And if you didn’t see what warranted a lotter pick out of Ced, I don’t know what to say. Ced’s frame, his hands and his very long arms are the kind of things that NBA scouts drool over. He was very good at blocking shots and was a decent rebounder. He was very young and had a good attitude. IMHO, he had the best basketball “body” for a big man in our conference since Tim Duncan. Like Duncan, I think he was also young for his year in college. And I’ll add this, if Ced was here this year, they’d be talking about him being one of the top 5 picks -and he had the potential to be the first pick.

If you break it down by ACC game last year, here’s what you have for Ben (according to ESPN.com):

    Miami 1
    UNC 1
    BC 6
    Ga Tech 3
    Duke DNP
    Wake 5
    Clemson 0
    Virginia 6
    Maryland DNP
    Miami DNP
    Ga Tech 6
    FSU 4
    Va Tech 9
    UNC 15
    BC 7
    Wake 8
    Wake/ACC Tourney 1

    17 games: 72 minutes, 4.2 avg

He did play a little more down the stretch, topping double figures in the horrendous UNC game that we’d all love to expunge from the permanent record. His 7 minutes a game average is propped up by double-figure minutes against chumps early in the year. Anyone remember his 13 points in 15 minutes against the Citadel? I didn’t.

You are totally missing the point. There wasn’t enough time given to figure out what McCauley’s impact could have been alst season, and I’m not saying that I didn’t see what everyone else saw in Simmons. But if you think McCauley and Costner just all of a sudden just matured over the summer, and that Sidney is totally responsible for that major difference in this short period of time, well then, I do not know what to say. Except for maybe go ahead and write the headlines, Coach Sidney Lowe, shoe in, to be the greatest ever.

  19. choppack1 01/16/2007 at 6:05 PM #

rf – I think there’s a huge difference between your 1st year and 2nd year. There’s also a huge difference in the offenses we’re running.

I don’t think Sidney is totally responsible for their improved play. However, I do believe that he and the system he has implemented has helped.

When Sid had his first presser he said that if he had a big man underneath he would throw it to him a lot, a lot. We (and maybe Sid) thought he was speaking only to Ced but Ben is showing that he can be that man.
