2006/7 Bowl Games

January 1st:

In light of the massive choke by Virginia Tech the other night…and the choke currently being committed by Georgia Tech in the Gator Bowl (West Virginia just went ahead in the 3rd quarter after trailing by as much as 18)…we thought that we would bump this back to the top of the blog.

December 28th:

In this bowl-related entry our friend choppack requested an entry for our readers to discuss college bowl games. That’s a great idea. So, we will use this entry for bowl conversations. We will kick off with choppack’s comments on what he has seen thusfar:

(1) FSU looked like the old FSU in the 2nd half of the game vs. UCLA. I was watching that game wondering how they lost 6 games this year. Go figure, you throw it up to a 6-6 receiver 3 times in the end zone, he’ll make at least one TD catch.

(2) Pac 10 is winless thus far in the bowl season (0-3). They have some favorable match-ups coming up but could easily end up 1-5 or even 0-6. Thank God, USC didn’t beat UCLA…because it would be real interesting to hear the chatter if USC was playing Ohio State w/ the Pac-10 off to a winless start. (And let’s face it, these first 3 wins weren’t exactly against Titans -Hawaii, BYU and an FSU team that didn’t win a game in the Atlantic division.)

(3) Last night’s bowl game was the only one still really in doubt in the 4th quarter. But the big-time bowl games are getting ready to hit high gear, so look for some good stuff.

We will through in an obligatory rip on East Carolina who got lambasted 24-7 by a lesser version of the same Sout Florida team that NC State shut out (14-0) in Charlotte last year. For more fun regarding PappaJohnsBowl fever you can click here.

Birmingham may never be the same after Saturday’s inaugural Papajohns.com Bowl between East Carolina and South Florida. Reader Greg was among those in attendance and sent us several images. The top shot shows a half-full (or half-empty, depending on your point of view) Legion Field with the Birmingham skyline in the background.

Yes, Boise State should have their shot in a playoff. I don’t think they are any more cheated than 2-loss LSU, however. They deserve a shot, too. In a 16-team playoff, you would still have games like last night…and Boise would move on to play again. We’d all be talking about whether they would ride the momentum or crash from a “hangover” the following week.

Stuff like this always happens when I fall asleep, damn it.

It was a great game, give Boise State some credit. BUT they do not belong on the field with OSU. This is why the bowl system works – they have had a great season and what a win to end it. If they go to a playoff, they can say they had a good season, but they still fell short. Now they can all look back and say they were 13-0, a perfect season!

I hope the Falcons go after Rich Rod or Urban Meyer. I dont think that offense can work at the NFL level, but, if anyone can make it work, Vick has the best shot.

If they bring in another standard offense, then they might as well trade Vick.

“Yes, Boise State should have their shot in a playoff. I don’t think they are any more cheated than 2-loss LSU, however. ”

Well, you got half of this right :).

I’m still trying to figure out how a playoff system would help the Boise State’s of the world when there is no way they’d win it. Any playoff system of more than 2 games would really favor the big boys. Also, something to keep in mind, in a 16 game playoff, Boise is probably playing on the road…

They could still win a game or two, and that would be just as good as winning the Fiesta Bowl. The best part is there would be no wondering “what if.” George Mason didn’t win it all, either, but their making the Final Four was still oustanding for them.

In my Sagarin formula, Boise State would have been the 9th seed, and gone on the road to play WVU. Winnable game. Now, at Ohio State the following week? Hey, they wanted their shot. 🙂

I hear ya – BJD – Here’s my thing, if the current system was so broken, why are we seeing so many folks make these bowl trips? I don’t know, from an NC State perspective, I know our best shot at a national title is in the current system. It will take us a long time to build up the kind of depth we need to win games against powerhouses like USC and Ohio State consecutively…By the way, if they use the “Plus 1” formula – who would play the winner of OSU-Florida? USC, Wisconsin or Boise?

Based on what I saw last night. BSU should play and would beat OSU but that can’t be proven right or wrong so that’s useless. Not sure I would even consider Wisconsin.

What really gets to me is that so many of the bowl teams I watched like TCU, BSU, (Rutgers who I could not see due to the NFL Network), or will watch like Louisville and WF all compete against the big powers for recruits. And yet through smart coaching they can excel. And then I look at our team and sometimes competition and wonder what the heck?

What I want is a chance for NCS to get even 1/2 or 1/3 of the great players and through smart coaching have a Cinderella’s shot at playing for the big one against the usual and customary 20-30 or so schools who (ho-hum) compete year in and year out.

I have to wonder if NCSU ever went undefeated and there were undefeated schools in the SEC, Big 10, Big Ten etc… also whether everyone would be saying “They don’t deserve it. Who did they play? Look Florida has to play the SEC. Ohio State had to play etc…….”

It’s a biased system and I don’t see that changing. Sadly.

“Based on what I saw last night. BSU should play and would beat OSU but that can’t be proven right or wrong so that’s useless. Not sure I would even consider Wisconsin.”

You saw them beat a team from the BCS conference that has performed the worst of any those conferences this year. You saw them beat a team that needed a Texas A&M upset of Tejas to get them to the championship. OTOH, USC beat a very solid Michigan team like a drum.

It is a little sad that Boise didn’t get a chance in the current structure. However, if you feel that they deserved a shot, your anger should be directed at the pollsters since they determined an undefeated Boise State team wasn’t better than tOSU, Florida, Michigan, LSU, etc….

What you guys keep forgetting about Boise is that they beat Oregon State 42-14. The same Oregon State team that beat USC. When you add to it that fact that they just beat a better opponent than Ohio State has played all year (Oklahoma won the Big 12 and Ohio State played Texas), then you cannot objectively say one is better than the other. You just dont know until the game is played.

Add on top of all that the fact that USC blitzed a Michigan team who lost to Ohio State by a much smaller margin.

The fact is that NO ONE knows how a playoff or any other game would play out until said game is played and is over.

In my hypo, I couldn’t see Boise State having a chance in Columbus. Then again, I couldn’t have ever seen George Mason beating lottery pick-laden UConn last year, either.

Wake Forsest had good defense last night — anyone who can contain Louisville to 24 has good D. WF shot itself in the foot too many times with fumbles. But the coaching on both sides was great.

    ACC sucks this year.

The falcons should have Vick line up in the backfield and Schaub take snaps. Maybe go get a receiver in the draft.

  13. CarnifeX 01/03/2007 at 1:30 PM #

^oh, and a coach. (can you get one of those in the draft?)

LSU looked great tonight. JaMarcus has a friggin cannon. Jimbo Fischer’s stock went up – as did Polini’s.

What a streak. 9 straight Bowl game losses for the FIghting Irish.

  16. choppack1 01/04/2007 at 9:26 AM #

Awesome! The longest of all time…

  17. CarnifeX 01/04/2007 at 5:36 PM #

Glad to have a hand in that streak!

[…] While we are talking about bowls, you can click here to see an very interesting review of the television ratings from last year’s bowl games. I think that the performances of some of the bowls will surprise you. The Emerald, Meineke and Champs Sports Bowls of the ACC all performed better than I think many people would have expected. (We would be letting you down if we didn’t link up this entry from last bowl season that makes fun of the ‘turnout’ for the PapaJohns bowl.) […]
