January 1st:

In light of the massive choke by Virginia Tech the other night…and the choke currently being committed by Georgia Tech in the Gator Bowl (West Virginia just went ahead in the 3rd quarter after trailing by as much as 18)…we thought that we would bump this back to the top of the blog.

December 28th:

In this bowl-related entry our friend choppack requested an entry for our readers to discuss college bowl games. That’s a great idea. So, we will use this entry for bowl conversations. We will kick off with choppack’s comments on what he has seen thusfar:

(1) FSU looked like the old FSU in the 2nd half of the game vs. UCLA. I was watching that game wondering how they lost 6 games this year. Go figure, you throw it up to a 6-6 receiver 3 times in the end zone, he’ll make at least one TD catch.

(2) Pac 10 is winless thus far in the bowl season (0-3). They have some favorable match-ups coming up but could easily end up 1-5 or even 0-6. Thank God, USC didn’t beat UCLA…because it would be real interesting to hear the chatter if USC was playing Ohio State w/ the Pac-10 off to a winless start. (And let’s face it, these first 3 wins weren’t exactly against Titans -Hawaii, BYU and an FSU team that didn’t win a game in the Atlantic division.)

(3) Last night’s bowl game was the only one still really in doubt in the 4th quarter. But the big-time bowl games are getting ready to hit high gear, so look for some good stuff.

We will through in an obligatory rip on East Carolina who got lambasted 24-7 by a lesser version of the same Sout Florida team that NC State shut out (14-0) in Charlotte last year. For more fun regarding PappaJohnsBowl fever you can click here.

Birmingham may never be the same after Saturday’s inaugural Papajohns.com Bowl between East Carolina and South Florida. Reader Greg was among those in attendance and sent us several images. The top shot shows a half-full (or half-empty, depending on your point of view) Legion Field with the Birmingham skyline in the background.

    So far, the bowls have been unwatchable garbage. Hopefully, some of these glorified exhibitions will AT LEAST start being entertaining, since there isn’t much meaning attached…

    I wonder what BC will do with Navy on Saturday?

    Anyway, at lease I’ve had something to watch on TV while on the treadmill at the Y! (Not much eye-candy running around during the holidays! (Just kidding!)

    I did enjoy seeing Colt Brennan’s second half of the Hawaii game. But QBs from there don’t normally make it big in the NFL.

    It was nice to see FSU looking better and for the ACC to win it’s first game.

    I think it’s a damn shame that the spat between the NFL network and Time Warner makes it impossible for me to watch Rutgers play tonight. Those greedy b_______s are both to blame. But that’s another rant.

    If BC loses to Navy then it probably provides a good example that a “coach” (specifically TOB) is critical to success. It might mean that more of his staff will come join him in Raleigh.

    In a few years, BC is going to hate us with a passion after some 2-10 seasons. They have been spoiled and took their coach for granted. Much to our gain.

    Hey Guys… I am trying to take my daughter to the State v Ecu game tonight. I went by the tix office and they said there were no 2 seats available together. Does anyone know of someone that is not attending the game? Based on our attendence numbers thus far, I thought it would be pretty easy. Glad I am wrong, but I hope people actually show up. Thanks Guys and Gals

    98st8 – Go to the game, there will plenty of seats together, I guarantee it.

    Regarding the ECU game – I’ll give them this. They did travel pretty well for that one. 32K for a bowl game in Bama for ECU-SFU isn’t bad at all, especially if you consider the fact that if they played it in Tampa or Greenville in the middle of the year, they’d have about 32k.

    The little ones are primarily done and it’s time for the big boys now. I can’t wait until New Year’s Day, Michigan vs. USC, Ark vs. Wisconsin, and Nebraska-Auburn…Then Boise State-OU. OU is should put the type of beating on Boise State that will shut up the small college critics. And yes, I’m still po’d that Utah was put against a Pitt team that was the worst BCS team in memory.

    3 games yesterday — 2 1/2 blowouts. The Bama (I will coach for food) team was behind by 2 TDs in the 4th when they got gifted with two quick scores. Oklahoma St managed to overcome their incompetence and win with a kick. A good game — not because of the play — but in spite of it.

    5 more games today. 3 during the day on a Friday while most of us have to work. They might as well have shown them on the NFL network or ESPN U since both are denied here by TW cable. Oh well there’s always the HSN, QVC, and BBC channels to keep one busy.

    I honestly think the ACC can go 6-2 easily, but the two losses being, the most important to the ACC’s reputation, GT and WF in the biggest bowls. The WV defense may be too much for Ball, and Louisville is just so damn fast I don’t think WF can hold them to less points than their offense will score.

    Er — Highonlowe — Did you not hear that Reggie Ball was ruled academically ineligible for the bowl game versus WV? Apprarntly did not go to class much. So GT has to put in a QB with little game experience.

    Nice comeback by the Dawgs in the Chick-fil-a bowl! Probably gets people off Richt’s back about his bowl record for at least a season or two.

    We have a chance to solidify our position as the worst of the BCS conferences at least for a year. Unless Wake beats Louisville tomorrow night, the Big East will have beaten our two best teams and be 4-0 in bowl games. But it ain’t over ’til its over.

    I thought the Glen Mason firing at Minnesota was an incredibly interesting development as a result of a colossal collapse in a bowl game. Admittedly, I don’t know anything about this situation but it is hard to believe he would have been fired with a run of the mill bowl loss. Wasn’t Texas Tech favored in this game? Losing a big lead can be especially galling to a fan base as we well know.

    We came back from a huge deficit against Mason & the Gophers in the Micron PC bowl game in Amato’s first year. Maybe this was something that happened often during his tenure. I think he was peripheral candidate for our job when Chuck was hired.

    Could this be the job for Kragthorpe or maybe they would want Holtz since his Dad was successful at Minnesota.

    I’ve thought all year that the ACC was very very weak and it looks like the bowl games are proving it. Hopefully, things will improve next year, particularly for the Pack!

    So much for the attempts to create controversy by claiming that Michigan “deserved” to be in the MNC game. UM didn’t impress me in the OSU game and they didn’t show much today either.

    Has the bowl season started yet?

    I’m half-way thru Season Four of CSI Miami. So far Horatio’s team is undefeated.

    … and Horatio has been named to Ray Bans “All-Sunglass Team”. He looks muuuuuch cooler in his shades than “you-know-who” ever did in his Oakleys.

    Way off topic, but I read an article in the Va. Pilot paper where Bud Foster said that HE had contacted NC State for the HC position and really wanted the job. He also said that he was very disappointed because he been offered but that he wants a head coaching at a quality program, and thought he could really have done something at NCSU.

    It’s the same NCSU, the one that’s gone to mediocre bowl games, the same university that’s had five, that’s right I said it, FIVE, consecutive appearances in the NCAA BB tourney. Now I wonder why well qualified coaches like Bud Foster and TOB, were blatently offering their services for the HC job in football, but yet we had to beg and plead to get coaches to even look our way in BB? Could the difference possibly have been in the overall outward appearance of the two programs along with the actual shape that the former coaches had built them up to, or in one case, left them in? I’d say that the answer to that question is a definite HELL YES.

    Wow.. just wow at the Boise st. vs Oklahoma game..

    Oklahoma down by 8.. drive down the field for the score with a minute and a half left. First two point conversion attempt is a fade with pass interference. 2nd attempt is another fade but an illegal formation on oklahoma. Last one is a set up fade but he checks down and hits the receiver in the middle of the field..

    Then on the ensuing possession Zabranksi throws a pick 6 to Oklahoma..

    Boise sets up another drive but ends up at 4th and 18 with 20 seconds left and they throw a hook and lateral for the TD.

    game goes to OT.
    First play for Oklahoma is a adrian peterson TD.
    Boise state gets first down and then takes it down to 3rd and 1 and ALMOST fumbles.. 4th and 2..

    Zabranksi lines up at WR. Their WR takes the direct snap and throws it to the right side for the TD.

    Boise decides to go for 2. There’s a Statue of liberty to Ian Johnson who runs it in.

    Then Ian Johnson proposes to the head cheerleader and she says yes.

    Greatest.

    Fantastic game last night – best one I’d see since the national championship game last year. This one was just crazy.

    However, lost in hubub shouldn’t be the Big 12’s miserable performance this year in the Bowl season.

    And another undefeated team is cheated out of a justified shot at the NC by the BCS system. Time for playoffs.

    Since you started this, there is nothing more illogical than thinking that Boise State would be better off in a playoff system. Since the NCAA men’s b’ball tourney expanded to 64 teams, only one non-BCS conference team has won the national championship – UNLV – and I’d hardly call them a “Cindarella team.”

    Boise State was not cheated in anyway. They got to play on New Year’s Day in a BCS Bowl. This win is the biggest win in their programs history. If we went to playoff, they’d get worked over next week…after all, they needed 3 trick plays to beat the second-worst BCS team by a point.

    Boise State may one day get their shot at the title. They’ll need to run the table and beat better teams, but it’s not on the realm of possibility. After all, the AP and Coaches vote weighs heavily in the BCS formula.
