Very Close to Official – O’Brien New Leader of the Pack

It’s now a headline on ESPN.com – Boston College head coach Tom O’Brien will leave to coach Atlantic Division rival NC State. It looks as if we may get a formal announcement as early as tomorrow.

As SFN noted earlier today, we agree with the apparent decision of the NC State search committee – Tom O’Brien is a better hire than Paul Johnson. And pretty much everyone agreed that Johnson would be a good hire, and clearly an upgrade over Amato.

I don’t want to repeat too much of the logic from the above-linked post. Suffice to say – those who claim Tom O’Brien is “Herb Sendek v. 2.0” are simply wrong, in our estimation. According to SFN’s sources, Coach O’Brien sought out the NC State job with the same vigor and tenacity as did Jimbo Fisher. He really wants to be here, and I think it’s safe to assume it’s because he believes he can elevate his success to a whole new level at NC State. He can go from “pretty good” to periodically competing for the ACC title, and regularly make good bowls (as even his current level of performance would land NC State in good bowl games). His floor essentially is identical to the Dick Sheridan level of performance, and few Wolfpackers complain about that era. And that’s not to say we expect that to be his ultimate ceiling – there’s every bit as much reason to hope for upside from TOB as there was with respect to PJ. I don’t think O’Brien would have made this move if he didn’t think he could take it to the next level at NC State. We should be honored and very enthusiastic that such an accomplished, respected coach feels that way about our university.

Please feel free to share your opinions below (don’t forget to contribute more facts at VaWolf’s thread below). We hope that even those fans hoping for Johnson, Fisher, or somebody else will be fair and rational about this hire. At SFN, we couldn’t be more excited about ushering in a new winning era of NC State football.

He had a better run at BC then the current had coach of the NY Giants and the current OC for (Redskins?), yet some BC alums thought he couldn’t get them over the hump. It’s a hockey school! While the rest of the nation’s best programs try to mesh basketball and football into great programs, BC college alums are putting in their two cents about good leaders fo football programs. From the frozen north and the perinnial BeanPot Classic winners in Ice Hockey come some timely advice about the merits of TOB. Save it for when we need a new coach for the Hurrianes, then maybe some BC alums would know their ass from a whole in the ground.

PQ, not sure if I’d rate Mack Brown number 2, but overall, I’d agree — TOB is a good coach, and I feel like he really thinks he can win at State. Any chance he can bring Matt Ryan along with him??? 🙂

  3. RedTerror29 12/07/2006 at 9:57 AM #

^^^The difference between the complaining fans at State and the complaining fans at BC? Ours actually show up for the games and write checks. I think TOB will take that.

Cardiff – if you know any BC fans this is what they will tell you.

    From here: http://www.boston.com/sports/colleges/football/articles/2006/12/07/coach_set_to_depart/

Looking for other jobs – read between the lines:

“O’Brien’s public interest in openings was muted as he prepared his team for its Meineke Car Care Bowl appearance against Navy Dec. 30. “I’m not a candidate for any job,” said O’Brien in a statement Tuesday when published reports named him as a candidate at Arizona State and Stanford.

O’Brien may have been playing semantics. He was not seeking jobs, but didn’t deny that he would listen”

Clock running out with the fans:
“But O’Brien has not gotten the Eagles to the conference championship and Bowl Championship Series bowl level. In 2004, the Eagles had a chance to win the Big East title and earn a Fiesta Bowl bid, but lost their last regular-season game to Syracuse. And in each of the last two seasons, the Eagles had a good shot to reach the ACC title game but fell just short.”

No one is going to come right out and state what I am telling you in a news pper. They try to be a bit more diplomatic. But I am telling you – fans were restless because TOB had failed in the clutch mulitple time and they lost hope that he could ever pull it off. TOB knew it and was actively looking to leave, albeit in the understated way befitting of the man.

You may not believe me now but you will in five years.

    TOB = George B. McClellan

Wow, a civil war General comparison. LOL.

vt the Boston area fans are probably more savy than we are – they have more teams to watch and they live it up there. There are certain themes that are common in all sports – the “it” factor being the foremost. Boston area people are friggin experts on this after watching the Red Sox fail so many times.

You may not believe me now but you will understand one day.

Cardiff, I’m with you, but in all fairness a quick look to BC message boards will tell you there was ample distress among Eagle fans. His time was getting shorter there.

The thing that troubles me here is the safeness of it all. I like the hire. I do. But what we hired is bona fide “solid” coach. I dont think anyone can say we hired the next “great” coach.

Now, I like that we have a built in floor with this guy. To be honest, it might be the highest floor we’ve ever had. But he is 58 and some would say he has shown his ceiling. I would disagree, but I understand the other argument here.

As for me though. I’m jacked. All year long I thought that with a decent OL, our skill players could have brought us 8-10 wins. I really hope Dwayne Dixon sticks around. And I sort of hope Dana Bible doesnt come along. I know this is blasphemy for some of you guys, but I’d like for Trestman to get another year or two.

Fits for comparing two military men. Makes perfect sense if you study leadership qualties for what makes some great leaders and others not.

I HOPE O’Brien HIRES CHUCK AS A recruiter. Chuck could do what he loves to do… be a salesman, and we could keep our ties in the florida recruiting circles. come on back chuck!! wouldnt it also reduce chuckies buy out? he would still be getting paid and standing on the sidelines and taking all the notes he wants. just not callin plays. i want you to help Obrien recruit, we all know you can!

  10. RedTerror29 12/07/2006 at 10:09 AM #

^Boston fans are the most whiny, pompous, attention-starved fans in the world – with an enormous inferiority complex to NYC to boot. If I want to know something about hockey I’ll call someone from Boston, but not for basketball, football, or baseball. The average Bostonian barely knew BC fielded a team. Heck, half of ’em probably don’t know the different between BC and BU.

  11. old13 12/07/2006 at 10:10 AM #

I don’t think that the TOB hiring is a bad one. But I would have preferred a younger up-and-comer like Jimbo & Co. But I WILL support TOB and the Pack with this hire!

As for the TOB-Herb comparisons, to me there is no comparison. Herb had the facilities, the talent and the program history to do much more than he did. TOB has built a winner WITHOUT facilities or history and much less talent than teams with comparable records.

  12. old13 12/07/2006 at 10:10 AM #

. . . HE GO THE MOST OUT OF HIS PLAYERS CONSISTENTLY. If he does the same at State with better talent, we’ll do OK IMO.

I would like to address the notion that Tom O’Bien cannot win big games.

Bobby Bowden a few years ago made this statement: “….a big game is only a big game if you have won the 8 or 9 before it.”

The only reason any game O’Brien coached in was a “big game” was because his teams had won 8 or 9 games during the season. I would say that NC State has not played a big game since a couple of Clemson or Ga. Tech games in the late 80’s. That has been 20 friggin years!! Seriously. When was the last time NC State played a game in the middle of November with anything more than pride on the line?

Please folks….lets get to play in some big games before we start bitching about not winning any!!!!!!!!

  15. redfred2 12/07/2006 at 10:13 AM #

I’m looking forward and think it will be interesting to see who steps up and fills TOB’s void up there in Beantown. When you stop and really think about it, TOB has done a pretty remarkable job up there. This latitude change may be the springboard he needs to climb even higher.

    TOB, come on down!!!

  16. 98st8 12/07/2006 at 10:16 AM #

I think BC fans need to be very careful what they wish for.
    1. he wins 8-9 games every year
    2. runs a very classy program with good student athletes
    3. fans have a bad reputation for travel and thus get bad bowl games
    4. facilities are below average
    5. wins 6 straight bowl games

tell me this…if you are 18 year old kid that is a star recruit, why would you go there? “Well son, if we win 9 games with your help next year we can play on a blue field in Idaho.”

If I am a coach, I would stay far away from that “no-win” situation

    TOB = George B. McClellan

Ouuchhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! That stings. I can’t think of many military leaders more overhyped in theory and pathetic in practice than George McClellan. A de facto traitor, as well.

Thanks for all who responded about TOB; I remain hopeful that he will accomplish great things here.

^^^Good entry, PQ. In addition, now we’ve got another team in our division that is looking for a head coach!!

  21. statered 12/07/2006 at 10:22 AM #

partial – sure TOB gets the date with the hot chick. But when it comes time to consumate the realtionship he pulls up impotent.

Maybe our facilites/fans will be the equivalent of Viagra for TOB. But the only reason you have to think so is FAITH, not data. He has consistently failed to break through and that is why he was a candidate here.

The guy is John Cooper revisited. If you are happy settling then so be it.

Incidentally, there are conflicting stories out on Leach to UM. Apparently Leach makes almost $2 million per year, one of the highest in the Big 12. This explains why Burgers N Fries Fowler didn’t even try, methinks.

Anyway, on story quotes a “senior NCAA official” as saying Leach is not likely to make a move; another describes Leach as “very enthusiastic” about the opening.

If Leach shows up at Miami and keeps Randy Shannon, we are burnt toast.

This was a little before my time of following coaches and the like, but for you veterans, does the transition from Kiffin to Reed seem similar to the Amato to O’Brien torch passing? From what I’ve gathered, Kiffin was pretty (very?) flamboyant when he was here and pretty free-wheeling. Not unlike Chuck. And Reed looked attractive when hired b/c he would bring discipline. I’m not saying that Reed’s qualifications at that time in any way match O’Brien’s now nor am I saying that O’Brien will fail as Reed did. It’s just interesting to me how the pendulum seems to swing in terms of what is attractive at a given point in time.

Ned’s article makes me feel much better about hiring TOB. If he’s against it – I’m all for it.

Bobby Bowden a few years ago made this statement: “….a big game is only a big game if you have won the 8 or 9 before it.”

I was looking to credot the poster who said this, did not find quickly, so sorry for not crediting you. Anyway, like PQ said above, give me a chance to play in the big games. Give me 9 wins and let me take my chances in the big game. It’s like V always said and Sid is syaing now – “give them a chance to win and let’s see what happens”. I’ll take the 9 wins and give them a chance to play in the big game every year.
