SFN’s Take: TOB > PJ

SFN has been hearing from a variety of sources that Boston College head man Tom O’Brien has emerged as a serious contender for the NC State job. As you may know, O’Brien has taken some heat from the Eagle faithful for not being able to get BC over the proverbial hump. While we agree that O’Brien may have maxed out what he is able to accomplish in Beantown, we do not believe that his ceiling would necessarily be limited at NC State.

O’Brien is supposedly willing to make a move because Boston is a pro sports town, almost exclusively. BC also has a small alumni base, which has led to good Eagle teams getting subpar bowl bids. The argument is that better bowls would lead to more recruiting momentum, as would a thriving, college-town environment – and ultimately, a chance at more success at NC State.

Of course, you might note that you could say the same thing about Paul Johnson. There is some truth to that. However, we believe that Tom O’Brien has some clear advantages over PJ – (i) BCS conference experience; (ii) has recruited at least some premium athletes; (iii) less potential to be negatively recruited against successfully; and (iv) a stronger staff (with pretty remarkable continuity).

O’Brien is no spring chicken, but young enough (58) to have a good ten year run at NC State. Plus, we already know his likely “floor” – 7-9 win seasons, which would at least get NC State into good bowl games periodically. We also think that it is reasonable to hope for greater success (contention for ACC titles) with a fresh start and a different environment to work in. Is it guaranteed? No. But nobody is going to be a sure thing here. SFN thinks that O’Brien would be a very good choice.

Of those losses against Top 25 programs, most of them are against top 10 teams.

^ I thought it was our goal to find a coach that can beat top 10 teams.

its a mistake to take TOB over PJ. PJ has won everywhere he has ever been and its his time. other programs are not happy that we are talking with him now and this is a good sign. sign PJ now…..2 nc anda 60-10 record at georgia southern is all you need to know…..

I’m trying to tell ya’ll the next wolfpack coach is Lane Kiffin OC at USC best OC in america right now.Think about it he is young yes, will relate to his player’s he has a NCAA Championship ring.his dad is the best DC in the NFL and has a super bowl ring.as far as JD goes great wolfpacker and the kids coming in know him as the ESPN guy. HEY if you don’t like JD then get Johnny out of the booth. his son already knows his plays.get your mind off wish we were 7-4 and going to the peach bowl.hire this kid play for a NCAA title.just ask Pete Caroll.ya’ll could had him 7 years ago.

fowler just needs to crawl into a bottle of cuervo and never come out. how could he have not expected to have to fire chuck. papers all over the country were talking about it for weeks prior to his release… the fact that the search “got off to a scarmbling start” is enough reason to can him. he did the same thing when herb resigned. herbie told him 2 weeks prior to departure yet fowler refused to start making progress in the search until 2 weeks after herb was gone. Id like to Roshambo that guy right in the nards.
btw- my vote is for Petrino! we could get this guy, no mention of his name>? why not

  6. choppack1 12/06/2006 at 5:18 PM #

Mr O – That may be true, but did you see this number:
TOB All-Time Versus Temple, Rutgers, UConn, I-AA Schools, and any non-BCS program other than BYU or Boise State:
    38 Wins
    5 Losses

TOB All-Time Versus All Other Schools:
    37 Wins
    39 Losses

To me, those #s look all too familiar. I mentioned earlier that my big concern was that TOB didn’t seem to win many “big” games. These #s really confirm it. Is TOB more like a John Cooper type? A guy who will win lots of games, but never win the big ones? Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s a solid candidate, but like I said, I think PJ has more upside than TOB. With PJ – you’re talking about a guy who has won big games and has dominated his rival. (Does BC have a rival?)

well we are in a mess now, arent we?!?! sounds like we insulted Fisher to the point that if Johnson to were “Calipari” us then Fisher’s attitdue might be that he dosnt want to coach somewhere where he was just a “B list” canidate and wasnt even interviewed to find out a bit about him and his potential. who the fuck had to even think about opening their mouths about being a “b list”?!?!?!?!?! our AD kind fuck up anything.

Fisher was a “b list” coach just because he has never been a HC before…. he’s FORTY ONE YEARS OLD!!!! give him some concideration.

now what if Miami decides to pick him up?!?!

  8. GrandWolf 12/06/2006 at 5:23 PM #

Choppack1, I fully agree. Fowler has really out “Fowlered” himself on this one.

Your post is on the money. Folks point to O’Brien’s 8 and 9 wins but don’t look at how they were gained. The argument is how can you not like a guy w/ all those 8 and 9 win seasons. Well, how could you not like a basketball coach winning 20+ games a year and hitting 5 NCAA’s?

I don’t see the potential for any conference titles with this guy. Its very disappointing. Again, hope he proves me wrong.

  9. BladenWolf 12/06/2006 at 5:25 PM #

    Clarksa-
Who said Jed + 2 has whittled it down to either TOB or PJ? That would be down right pathetic at this early stage IMHO.

As far as I know, the job is still open and interviews are being conducted.

Holtz, Logan, Kragthorpe, Leach, and others may still be in play (God I hope so). Even Coker. Long shot, but still possible.

I’ve heard three very conflicting things today:

    1) It’s someone who is not on the media radar whatsoever. It’s a name that will shock you. (From someone with very close ties to the basketball program.)

    2) It’s definitely Paul Johnson. (From someone with very close ties to a major donor.)

    3) It’s definitely Tom O’Brien. (From the lunatic fringe. That would be you guys, obviously.)

  11. WolfpackDave 12/06/2006 at 5:27 PM #

TOB would definitely be a better hire than PJ.

  12. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 12/06/2006 at 5:29 PM #

I’m am against the idea of an assitant but I could buy into Lane Kiffin if Monte comes as DC.

  13. choppack1 12/06/2006 at 5:30 PM #

GW – I think we have to be fair in that, hey, NC State will be much different than BC in the terms of athletes we bring in and in terms of the overall energy to the program. However, look what he had a chance to do this year. I mean, he was playing one of the two schools he should be able to handle athletically for the Division championship – and he lost.

Of course, the $1 million question is is he on the cusp? I don’t know – to me, that’s why he’s 1c.
    1a – PJ
1b – Jimbo (I guess we can throw that out, huh?)
1c – TOB – he’s still an impressive hire, but there are very valid concerns w/ him too.

GAWolf: Go ahead and shock me! Spill the beans

    Latest from David Glenn…
At Wed Dec 06, 04:30:12 PM, David Glenn said…

    (1) James in Willow Springs: You’re worrying me. Everything will be OK. And don’t play with matches. :O)

    (2) I don’t think State will fall to its B list. This is just “informed opinion,” NOT fact, but I “think” the next NCSU coach will be Tom O’Brien or Paul Johnson. Of course, sometimes these things take strange, unpredictable turns. We’ll see….

    (3) I like Mark Schlabach of ESPN.com. He’s a very good reporter, and has been for a long time.

    (4) The “B list” phrase was used by the source close to Coach Fisher, NOT by N.C. State officials. I think “B list” was just Coach Fisher’s interpretation (accurately) about where he stood, NOT what they told him. Coach Fisher has a lot of positive things to say about State.

    (5) If you followed me around all day, and you knew with whom I was meeting and speaking, you would never, ever, ever call what I write “just a bunch of media speculation.” I work very hard to clarify which is which (fact/speculation) in my reporting, and in fact many readers have said that’s one of the things they like most about our coverage. I also always try to emphasize what we DON’T know. And rather than taking my word for it, I encourage you to examine my track record on this stuff, either on this blog or over the last 20 years. I also encourage you to judge me after this search is over — what info I had, when I had it, and how things unfolded after that. Thanks.

    (6) The “leaks” in this story are not coming from Chuck Neinas. That guy is like a steel trap. Also, unlike during the NCSU basketball search, very few leaks are coming from the NCSU side. (Of course, I can vouch only for my experience. Others in the media may be having different experiences.) Just remember, some coaches don’t talk, but many do. So Neinas and NCSU could be VERY quiet, but stuff will still get out because of the coaches.

    (7) I do NOT expect this search to end today (Wednesday). At the same time, I don’t think it will last much longer, either.

    As always, thanks for reading!!

Sometimes I feel like these threads become something akin to the old Miller Lite commercials:

    TASTE GREAT! LESS FILLING!

It’s ridiculous. Anyway SFN could post a poll at the top where if all you want to do is vote for your “fave” you could just mash the button on your mouse and not bog the blog with fluff for one guy or the other. We’re not decision makers in this thing. It’s clear they don’t care what we think… so my sole purpose here is to try to find out what in God’s green earth is going on with the search.

    I think I like Johnson over TOB…

TOB could get the job done, but we have a PROVEN record of ACC play, a PROVEN record of BCS caliper teams, and being the ACC its going to make it even more deficult. I didnt really care for the play that was coming out of BC for the first half of the year. They are another team that JUST BARELY gets W’s. If TOB cant coach this team discipline then he is nothing more than Amato again based on the close games.

I guess it would be interesting to see if Johnson can be successful since his diehard fans say he is a “proven” winner on “every” level(so far)… this is the next step for him… unfortunatly its a diffrent ball game as well.

  20. wolpfack 12/06/2006 at 5:38 PM #

^ GaWolf: ahhh the mystery candidate…not that I’m doubting you, it could be true, but who out there would be a name that shocks us…I know we havent exhausted all the possible candidates, and Jed is able to pull some surprises out of his a$$ (see Sid)…but I just dont see it

I think we’re down to 2: TOB and PJ…and quite frankly, I wouldnt be surprised if it has been those 2 from the very start (granted TOB might have been an addition a day or 2 later…) I think plain and simple, this search has been a lot of smoke and mirrors…

  21. ChuckAllYall 12/06/2006 at 5:39 PM #

I just have an eerie feeling this search is going to end up with me throwing up a little in my mouth. What reasons do we have to believe that Fowler has become anything more than a liability when it comes to evaluating potential coaching candidates over the past 8 months? We got lucky with Sid, so here’s to hoping lightning strikes twice in Raleigh.

I wonder if coach Bud Kilmer from Varsity Blues is available? Sure they ran him out of town, but he seemed to turn that dude from Dawson’s Creek into a good QB. Speaking of Varsity Blues, has anyone noticed how Justin Burke looks dead-on QB Jonathon Moxon. He was even overheard on the sidelines last season telling Marc Tresman that he “didn’t want his life”.

  22. GAWolf 12/06/2006 at 5:43 PM #

Oh no. I wasn’t provided a name on the now labled “Mystery Candidate.” In fact, after the statement was made to me we sat around throwing completely off-the-wall names out there to see which shocked the conscience most…. Gruden probably getting the most “ooohs and ahhhs.” But seriously, I don’t have a clue who the alleged MC is. It’s just a statement made to me by a guy very, very close to the basketball program.

The PJ info I got I think is pretty dang reliable due to the connection. The same guy also told me to “not believe ANYTHING I read on the internet.”

  23. GAWolf 12/06/2006 at 5:43 PM #

But we all know if it’s on the internet it’s true.

  24. packpigskinfan23 12/06/2006 at 5:43 PM #

Chow removes name from list, huh?!?! damn. I was realling hopeing he was the “mystery” guy
