SFN’s Take: TOB > PJ

SFN has been hearing from a variety of sources that Boston College head man Tom O’Brien has emerged as a serious contender for the NC State job. As you may know, O’Brien has taken some heat from the Eagle faithful for not being able to get BC over the proverbial hump. While we agree that O’Brien may have maxed out what he is able to accomplish in Beantown, we do not believe that his ceiling would necessarily be limited at NC State.

O’Brien is supposedly willing to make a move because Boston is a pro sports town, almost exclusively. BC also has a small alumni base, which has led to good Eagle teams getting subpar bowl bids. The argument is that better bowls would lead to more recruiting momentum, as would a thriving, college-town environment – and ultimately, a chance at more success at NC State.

Of course, you might note that you could say the same thing about Paul Johnson. There is some truth to that. However, we believe that Tom O’Brien has some clear advantages over PJ – (i) BCS conference experience; (ii) has recruited at least some premium athletes; (iii) less potential to be negatively recruited against successfully; and (iv) a stronger staff (with pretty remarkable continuity).

O’Brien is no spring chicken, but young enough (58) to have a good ten year run at NC State. Plus, we already know his likely “floor” – 7-9 win seasons, which would at least get NC State into good bowl games periodically. We also think that it is reasonable to hope for greater success (contention for ACC titles) with a fresh start and a different environment to work in. Is it guaranteed? No. But nobody is going to be a sure thing here. SFN thinks that O’Brien would be a very good choice.

and for the love of god, it’s Sidney not Sydney, hence Sid Lowe, not Syd Lowe

Is chuck selling his house? Thats a shame, I liked Chuck and hope that he has no hard feelings towards our university. It seemed like he really loved NCSU. I hope he feels welcome here. Thanks Chuck.

Now Lee is another story. I have never seen any evidence of Lee’s passion toward NCSU, he has done what is necessary to keep his job and thats it; he degrades the fanbase on a regular basis, in my opinion thats unacceptable.

“and for the love of god, it’s Sidney not Sydney, hence Sid Lowe, not Syd Lowe”

Oops, yeah, hmmm, well, it’s been a long day :).

Yeah, State has a depth issue, but the same team under Sendek wouldn’t be playing this well. The troops are inspired.

1.Why is it ok for Oklahoma and Georgia to hire high profile assistant coaches, but we (NC STATE) are apparently above that???

uhhhhh because we went that route the last two times and it has put our program back about 20 years and in the great wisdom of the NC State athletic folks they went to lifetime seating rights which means you can’t have a string of bad seasons lest you want to be playing in front of crowds of 20,000 loyal, but mentally unstable, fans.

Maybe in the end we will know the full story, but from what I’ve heard someone from Camp Fisher leaked this info. Why? To point out some absurdity of NC States coaching search? To spin something so young and up in coming Jimbo gets more press? Or maybe because this source just beleives there should be more truth and transparency in the world (coming out of La I sincerely doubt it). Time will tell, so until something further comes along to verify the cause of this cancellation then who cares?

Several of you have asked, why are we only talking about O’Brien and Johnson when there are others out there that some of of us think could be a lot better.

The answers are graduation rates and on and off field control of the student-athletes. We are not looking for the best football coach. We are looking for the best Mommy that can coach football.

  7. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 12/06/2006 at 3:59 PM #

Hasn’t Sydney already proven that a young coach full of passion and energy can do wonders to an athletics program???

uhhhhh Sid isn’t a ‘young’ coach. By no means an old man but hardly a fresh face in the coaching world. His first coaching job came about 15 years ago.

  8. vtpackfan 12/06/2006 at 4:04 PM #

And Larry Coker is not on any list to interview for this job. He was the head coach of a team full of Florida’s finest that took on another So. Florida school in a game of football that turned into street gang graduation. On top of that there were thousands of children invited in that evening by a group sponsing efforts for kids to play sports, not join gangs. The old guy had no control over these players. Two were shot leaving practice, one killed.

TOB would bring some stabilty and confidence to a program that lacked self contol. He should be going to the “U”, because I don’t know if anyone besides a Marine could be thick headed enough to believe anything could get through to those players.

    To the Coker

While Coker amassed a very good record at Miami and won there, as Statefans has pointed out, he took a team at a top 5 in the nation level and has slowly and progressively presided over them sliding into a middle of the pack team.

Coker has progressively underachieved with a giant recruiting advantage from his Championship first year. While its unclear whether O’Brien has overachieved or underachieved at BC, he does have them consistently in the top 3rd of the conference (Big East and ACC). Who knows where BC’s true ‘equilibrium point’ is, so ones opinion on O’Brien is just that, opinion. But for my dollar I think he’s done a fine job at BC.

Meant to put “To the Coker backers”

  11. BladenWolf 12/06/2006 at 4:06 PM #

Woof Wolf- It certainly seems that way.

When a coach that has a 59-15 six-season record is available and still gets no consideration, something is amiss. I know many of the student-athletes at Miami were actually hooligans in uniforms, but it was Amato’s Pack that led the league in penalites and not the Hurricanes. I also do not buy the “he couldn’t graduate his players” baggage. The coaches coach and the tutors tutor.

I know the man looks somewhat like a gargoyle, but damn… he can flat out win games. Isn’t that what we’re after?

  12. WolfPup35 12/06/2006 at 4:10 PM #

Well, that speaks to experience. Has anybody else noticed how he rarely sits down on the bench?? Maybe if we look hard enough, we can see someone standing over his shoulder giving praise and inspiration. I had a really good feeling about Sid, mainly because of who he learned from in college. I’m NOT saying he’s JV, but you can definitely see some Valvano influence in his coaching style….we all saw the “zone” he played against Michigan? Really looked less like a 2-3 and more like the old triangle & 2 we ran in the 80’s. If Sid continues his coahing on the fly style, this team will really surprise a lot more people than they already have. Good luck tonight, beat WVa!! GO WOLFPACK!!

  13. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 12/06/2006 at 4:11 PM #

    “The answers are graduation rates…”

honestly is there really more than about 2% of the fan base that give a crap about graduation rates? I’ve never known any fan that says we had a great season, beat UNC, beat FSU but our graduation rate is awful. puhlease. I do agree that is probably a factor to the some of the pinheads making the calls. The same people that wanted to destroy our basketball program and fire V.

  14. primacyone 12/06/2006 at 4:12 PM #

I’ll take TOB and his consistant record 8 days a week. He’ll if not for some wild pass and catch on the last play of a game he would be 10-2 right now.

9-3 with NC State fans will get you something similar to the Gator Bowl of 2003 every year. It’s a shame 9-3 at BC will only get you the MCC bowl or whatever it is called these days.

I’ll take PJ 7 days a week and be happy until he starts scoring less than 24 points every game.

Apparently I type too slowly, my last post was in response to:
uhhhhh Sid isn’t a ‘young’ coach. By no means an old man but hardly a fresh face in the coaching world. His first coaching job came about 15 years ago.

    PQ:
I see your list and if you were to show that list to any coach in the country or knowledgeable media person they would say PJ is the equal of anyone on your list. And by the way I think TOB, as posted earlier, is a fine coach, but at his age for what I think we need he is just not the best fit. I’m all for interviewing them all just to see what is there for us. But of what seems to be there, I have not yet seen anyone better than PJ or JF. And JF is more on faith rather than proven results at this time.

  17. BladenWolf 12/06/2006 at 4:17 PM #

vtpackfan – one game does not a coach make.

And I’m not defending anything that happened in that game. I think it made us all sick watching what happened. But his record was 59 wins and 15 losses. So with your logic, you have 74 games left to analyze.

I firmly beleive the same folks talking this nonsense about “no control over the players” will be screaming for whoever’s head when the Pack reaches yet another mediocre 4-7 year and once again lose to the (Butch Davis coached) tarholes. We will hear NO ONE here claiming “at least he has control of his players and they graduate!”

Come on, let’s be honest with ourselves. Amato was in control?

  18. CaptainCraptacular 12/06/2006 at 4:19 PM #

I’m not saying anything about his control over his players, his graduation rate, or his church attendance record.

I’m saying Coker is a poor choice only because he led a great program with a huge recruiting advantage in talent rich South Florida from greatness into mediocrity.

  19. class of 74 12/06/2006 at 4:23 PM #

    ^agree totally.

  20. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 12/06/2006 at 4:24 PM #

“And I’m not defending anything that happened in that game…”

Did I miss something? Did Coker fight another coach during a game?

  21. quypack93 12/06/2006 at 4:24 PM #

please no tob, we would be the first one to take a hc from another acc school. bad precedence for someone like tob is not worth it. it’s not like we don’t have any choices! this is turning out like the bball search. the search has turned into name chasing again. lee fowler would not make a courageous decision and go with pj. tomorrow if some bigger name shows up, then tob would be in the back burner. embrassing.

  22. highonlowe 12/06/2006 at 4:25 PM #

Enough with the Coker. Here is the man’s record:

    2001 12-0 Rose: Beat Nebraska 37-14
2002 12-1 Fiesta: Lost to Ohio State 31-24
    2003 11-2 Orange: Beat Florida State 16-14
    2004 9-3 Peach: Beat Florida 27-10
    2005 9-3 Peach: Lost to LSU 40-3
    2006 6-6 Smurf Bowl

That’s a clear downward trend with some of the best athletes in the nation.

  23. chilly water 12/06/2006 at 4:26 PM #

tob>pj= RETARDED, PJs a WINNER at NAVY!!!!!!

  24. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 12/06/2006 at 4:28 PM #

It is hard to not go downward from 12-0, 12-1, 11-2 you really can’t do much better. When Amato won 9 games with one of the best QB’s ever to play the game he was a god. For Coker it is a downward trend. Would any State fan not take those records over the last 6 years? He has a bad season and gets fired and he is available.

  25. DiscoStu65 12/06/2006 at 4:32 PM #

Why is nobody mentioning Roman Gabriel? The man led the Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks to an impressive winless first and only season. Could he be our man when we get flubbed by PJ?
