SFN’s Take: TOB > PJ

SFN has been hearing from a variety of sources that Boston College head man Tom O’Brien has emerged as a serious contender for the NC State job. As you may know, O’Brien has taken some heat from the Eagle faithful for not being able to get BC over the proverbial hump. While we agree that O’Brien may have maxed out what he is able to accomplish in Beantown, we do not believe that his ceiling would necessarily be limited at NC State.

O’Brien is supposedly willing to make a move because Boston is a pro sports town, almost exclusively. BC also has a small alumni base, which has led to good Eagle teams getting subpar bowl bids. The argument is that better bowls would lead to more recruiting momentum, as would a thriving, college-town environment – and ultimately, a chance at more success at NC State.

Of course, you might note that you could say the same thing about Paul Johnson. There is some truth to that. However, we believe that Tom O’Brien has some clear advantages over PJ – (i) BCS conference experience; (ii) has recruited at least some premium athletes; (iii) less potential to be negatively recruited against successfully; and (iv) a stronger staff (with pretty remarkable continuity).

O’Brien is no spring chicken, but young enough (58) to have a good ten year run at NC State. Plus, we already know his likely “floor” – 7-9 win seasons, which would at least get NC State into good bowl games periodically. We also think that it is reasonable to hope for greater success (contention for ACC titles) with a fresh start and a different environment to work in. Is it guaranteed? No. But nobody is going to be a sure thing here. SFN thinks that O’Brien would be a very good choice.

I’m not saying TOB is a bad choice, but for some reason, that just doesn’t seem to pass the smell test. Could someone who is high on TOB explain to me why we are discussing this ACC coach while NOT discussing the ACC coach they just let go in Miami? His name is Larry Coker, by the way.

I mean… are we down to only JP and TOB? Hold on… wait a minute…with Jed burning bridges this early on (see Fisher), that may actually be the case….but damn.

At this point, why not discuss other potential ex-coaches (ACC or otherwise) that could take us to the next level as well? Logan?

Depends on your definition of “the next level.” Currently we sit at 3-9 and if O’Brien could consistantly get us to 8-9 wins, then we would be “at the next level.”

^ I know Jimbo doesnt have the HC experience, but if he is credited with helping Saban rebuild, I would think that would be a strong advantage to him, LSU’s results would seem to show he knows what he is doing…

I’m just befuddled with the fact that Fowl-up gave him the “thanks, but no thanks”…there is no reason to turn down a candidate who has a ton of upside unless you’ve got one already signed…and nothing being reported would seem to suggest that…

So with Jimbo and Chow now off the “b-list” it’ll be interesting to see what happens if TOB and PJ dont pan out…

BTW, is it eerie to anyone else that PJ’s comments are similar to Barnes and TOB’s in some way resemble Calipari’s?? Not trying to read into it too much…but I just get that vide…

In the state of North Carolina in Football, the PACK should have no equal, unlike basketball, a big name coach should not be a problem in getting one. But the fact of the matter is we have a AD that seems to me has big problems in the hiring processes. I heard that Amato would have not been canned if he would at least split or won the last two games and the AD was not prepared to hire a football coach this year. No excuse! I would not take anyone of my list just because I thought I could get a bigger fish. What gives Lee! I have heard that two coaches are at the fore front, TOB and PJ, both are qualified and capable, but the fact of the matter is TOB has proven BCS experience, no matter what age. PJ has not. He has turned Navy into a good program, no doubt, but you are talking about NC State! You cannot compare apples to oranges. Betwwen the two, I would choose TOB just because he has proven himself at BC and he can win games in the ACC unlike Amato.

Here is the MOST distressing thing concerning the Fisher story:

What “unknown” could have possibly become “known” between the time Fowler set up the interview and the time Fowler cancelled the interview? If he set up the interview then there must have been interest.

Did Jon Bielein call and mention his buyout?

You dont do business like this. Plain and simple. The man is an idiot.

This search is starting to resemble the basketball search. Chow is now not interested according to ESPN. Paul Johnson is going to hold us hostage until Alabama and Miami decide if they are interested in him. We need to hire Steve Logan immediately and move on with a great coach.

Just wanted to give a remider for everyone to vote for Mr. Wuf in the capital one bowl challenge. Right now he is TRAILING Butch Cougar by over 100 votes!! He had the best record leading up to the playoffs, don’t let his get knocked off this close to the end!!! VOTE EVERY DAY, LET’S WIN THIS ONE!!

    Clarksa-
The term “next level” is just a cliche used to make a point. No one can guarantee any coach will produce 8-9 wins, and if TOB can produce that consistantly in Raleigh, then more power to him. I’ll be in the stands cheering.
The “next level” describes what ever vision (better than 3-9) that you want it to describe.
My point was not that hard to understand. Why are we talking about BC’s TOB over Navy’s PJ when we have not even discussed Coker at Miami?
    Just asking a question.

why would we not even interview jimbo. i may come to “b list” candidate by the end. what harm is there in interviewing as many people as possible? Fowler is a GD fool.

    TOB

  11. CarnifeX 12/06/2006 at 3:32 PM #

I’m curious, the ESPN article said that Chow was fired from NC State. Did we really fire him? I hope not.

  12. jbpackfan 12/06/2006 at 3:32 PM #

Who tells someone that they are a B list candidate? That is retarded.

  13. redfred2 12/06/2006 at 3:33 PM #

“He graduates players at as a high a rate as any coach in the country.”

Where have I heard that before? 🙂

I kinda have to agree with the poaching deal. Plus TOB, in basically a lateral move, doesn’t really float my boat. I wish we had the patience and the b*lls, and were willing to give a younger coach a few years come in here and to get his act together. I want someone who really wants to prove something, and wants it badly. As for Bladen’s comment, it would seem that even L Coker, would be one up on TOB in that category.

    Possible future scenario:

UNC’s Butch Davis, formerly of Miami vs NCSU’s Larry Coker, formerly of Miami.

Since no one wants to discuss it, here is Coker’s record at Miami:
six-year record at the school to 59-and-15. That’s a (mathmatical) average of 9.8 wins and 2.5 losses per season (this year he went 6-6, so a few seasons were even better than the average).

Hasn’t Sydney already proven that a young coach full of passion and energy can do wonders to an athletics program??? Our bball team is inspired, and in my opinion they’re playing above their talent (Fowler, that’s a good thing!)

Will State take the easy road and choose the known, or take a chance and hire a coach who could be the next big thing nationally?

My vote is for PJ. I’ll be disappointed if we go with the O’Brien. Deeply, deeply disappointed.

sflapckfan, you wouldn’t happen to run the coachingrumors.com website by any chance, would you?

    LOGAN, I SAY, LOGAN

  20. dirtystev 12/06/2006 at 3:43 PM #

Is there a fire fowler website? Maybe we can get the same realtor that is helping Chuck to sell Lee’s house’s.

LOGAN, I SAY, LOGAN does not want our job.

Monte’s son? Come on. He’s only 31 years old for Pete’s sake.

  23. Barnette2Holt 12/06/2006 at 3:44 PM #

    L. Coker no way. TOB okay, but PJ is the man. He is from NC. He wins wherever he goes. He runs the ball because he’s at Navy – it gives him the best chance to win. The guy knows how to use all kinds of talent.

You’re confused. Our bball team is playing above their DEPTH, not above their talent. We have some great players, just not enough of them.
