SFN’s Take: TOB > PJ

SFN has been hearing from a variety of sources that Boston College head man Tom O’Brien has emerged as a serious contender for the NC State job. As you may know, O’Brien has taken some heat from the Eagle faithful for not being able to get BC over the proverbial hump. While we agree that O’Brien may have maxed out what he is able to accomplish in Beantown, we do not believe that his ceiling would necessarily be limited at NC State.

O’Brien is supposedly willing to make a move because Boston is a pro sports town, almost exclusively. BC also has a small alumni base, which has led to good Eagle teams getting subpar bowl bids. The argument is that better bowls would lead to more recruiting momentum, as would a thriving, college-town environment – and ultimately, a chance at more success at NC State.

Of course, you might note that you could say the same thing about Paul Johnson. There is some truth to that. However, we believe that Tom O’Brien has some clear advantages over PJ – (i) BCS conference experience; (ii) has recruited at least some premium athletes; (iii) less potential to be negatively recruited against successfully; and (iv) a stronger staff (with pretty remarkable continuity).

O’Brien is no spring chicken, but young enough (58) to have a good ten year run at NC State. Plus, we already know his likely “floor” – 7-9 win seasons, which would at least get NC State into good bowl games periodically. We also think that it is reasonable to hope for greater success (contention for ACC titles) with a fresh start and a different environment to work in. Is it guaranteed? No. But nobody is going to be a sure thing here. SFN thinks that O’Brien would be a very good choice.

I’d rather lose with discipline and without the swagger. Let’s go Coach O.

    IMHO,
O’Brien will get better talent at State than he got at BC.
Davis will have to settle for less talent at UNC than he got at Miami.

No, seriously, he was not my guy an hour ago, but he is now. We can now start bitching about who the OC and DC should be.

He is in his late fifties, I don’t see him using us as a stepping stone

Well. It has been announced on just about every outlet except the Ladies Home Journal. Guess its true.

[gulp] Welcome TOM! Prove me wrong! My love for NC State is greater than any misgivings I have for a new coach.

Here’s to Coach O’Brien in the Red and White

Good backgrounder on O’Brien. He had two children graduate from BC in 2005. Now he makes a move in 2006.

o’brien is a great hire. check out that bio that justaguy left. yes o’brien is older, yet he will not leave for ND, not only is Weis in for a long time, yet also ND is a hated rival of BC’s i just don’t see him wanting that traitor type role. This man’s graduation rates are astounding, he went to the naval academy so he will provide discipline. He is a great offensive line developer something that we have continuously not shown the ability to do. BC’s o-line has been monstrous and one of the toughest we have faced year in and year out. He was an offensive coordinator at UVA so he knows this region, and on top of that there is a lot more speed and talent down in this part of the country. I think O’brien is a great hire and i agree with SFN’s view that TOB>PJ.

The BC forum. Its a hilarious read.

I hate to say this guys, but we are now playing the role of Arizona State.

The thing is that I am hopeful that our facilities will allow TOB to break out from that glass ceiling there. Still. BC fans are ridiculously happy.

Some of you have to be parodies. There is no way the average fan base has as many delusional fans as we apparently do.

Not sure what to think with O’ Brien. He’s already recruited in the ACC and knows the conference fairly well. One of the good things that Chuck Amato left us is an open door to recruit in Florida. After seeing NC state heavily recruit florida i’m more than willing that floridian HSers will be waiting for a call from NC state whether they players themselves are interested or not. So O’ Brien should be able to recruit the northeast like he has in the past and also recruit Florida if he really wants to. I don’t know much about recruiting but I would assume that my above disjointed rambling is correct.

In my Opinion he should have an easier time recruting at NC state than at BC. That might just be my bias but that’s what I would expect.

    06 – 9-3
    05 – 9-3
    04 – 9-3
    03 – 8-5
    02 – 9-4
    03 – 8-4
    00 – 7-5
    99 – 8-4

That should say it all. Credit to whoever posted this above. That would mean a Peach/Gator bowl every year and he’s won most of his bowl games.

Now take his record at BC with less talent (again, assumption) and bring it to a school with more talent and we have a chance at ACC championships. I think that next year is going to be a major down year in teh ACC. IMO we have a chance to be contenders right away with this guy. We have the facilities, now we have the coach.

And please, if my assuming is completely off the wall someone please correct me. I pretty much don’t know jack about recruiting.

Congratulations, Tom. You have gotten yourself into a deep problem. You have an AD that is an idiot, and you have about half of these fans on here that are idiots!

I can’t wait to see what TOB can do in Raleigh with the facilities and SUPPORT from Wolfpack fans! The future is bright. If we would’ve hired PJ, we would have been second guessing anyway. I say it’s a good, safe hire.

  20. crackdog 12/06/2006 at 10:30 PM #

Wow, I had absolutely no clue that we would be able to lure a current top-25 level coach away from the intstitution he is, well, an institution at. Great Hire! I look forward to massive, skilled O-lines, a solid running game, and WINNING football at Carter Finley. Tom O’Brian will not embarrass NC State.

  21. redfred2 12/06/2006 at 10:42 PM #

    beowolf- Too funny!

I’m not doing any cartwheels over it but if O’Brian can recruit at BC and win, maybe he can do more here. This is a safe, good choice, from a realistic viewpoint.

BUT I LOST ALL OF MY REALITY BASED PERSPECTIVE A FEW YEARS BACK!!!

Damn it Chuck, I would have probably been perfectly happy with this hire earlier, before all the hype robbed of my senses.

NOW I want to be a perennial, a year in, year out, FOOTBALL PROGRAM with BCS written all over it.

I want it, I want it, I want it!!!

I AM LOSING IT HERE! HELP!!!

  22. Mike 12/06/2006 at 10:56 PM #

We MUST support TOB, like him or not. We could have hired God and some of you would complain. Give him a chance.

As for recruiting, his lines have been good. What have ours been? He knows the northeast, where good lineman come from. If we can keep FL and NC pipelines open (skill players come from FL) and the lineman from NE, we should be good to go and balanced.

  23. class of 74 12/06/2006 at 11:13 PM #

Well this just confirms what began in 1990 in our athletic department continues through today. Well we have a new coach and we don’t have any choice but to support him, but this was not what it could have been. This is, IMHO, a very sad day.

  24. wolpfack 12/06/2006 at 11:15 PM #

^Mike – I dunno, I think I could have been pretty happy w/ God as out coach…think of all the immaculate things that would happen on the field…we could have the immaculate reception II, the immaculate deflection II, the list could go on and on…and something tells me God would have been pretty good at cutting down on penalties…

but in all seriousness…i think this is a good hire…not a great hire…but a good one…TOB has done well and hopefully will be able to improve on his record…

its a little ironic that the BC fans are rejoicing about getting rid of him and a large number of people on here are extatic about bringing him in…

i will say though, above everything, i am most disappointed in how this search played out…while we dont know all the details, i feel certain that it was not the “nation-wide” search that was promised (and it certainly doesnt seem like it started “immediately”)…hopefully news will come out and prove me wrong, restore what little faith i have left (if any) in Fowl-up…if it shown however that this was not a nation-wide search and we interviewed one candidate, i promise you that i will be calling for fowl-ups head…not matter how well TOB does…

  25. Dan 12/06/2006 at 11:27 PM #

Can anyone think of a similar situation where a “solid” coach left one BCS school for another and was MORE successful? ie. Winning League Titles.
