SFN’s Take: TOB > PJ

SFN has been hearing from a variety of sources that Boston College head man Tom O’Brien has emerged as a serious contender for the NC State job. As you may know, O’Brien has taken some heat from the Eagle faithful for not being able to get BC over the proverbial hump. While we agree that O’Brien may have maxed out what he is able to accomplish in Beantown, we do not believe that his ceiling would necessarily be limited at NC State.

O’Brien is supposedly willing to make a move because Boston is a pro sports town, almost exclusively. BC also has a small alumni base, which has led to good Eagle teams getting subpar bowl bids. The argument is that better bowls would lead to more recruiting momentum, as would a thriving, college-town environment – and ultimately, a chance at more success at NC State.

Of course, you might note that you could say the same thing about Paul Johnson. There is some truth to that. However, we believe that Tom O’Brien has some clear advantages over PJ – (i) BCS conference experience; (ii) has recruited at least some premium athletes; (iii) less potential to be negatively recruited against successfully; and (iv) a stronger staff (with pretty remarkable continuity).

O’Brien is no spring chicken, but young enough (58) to have a good ten year run at NC State. Plus, we already know his likely “floor” – 7-9 win seasons, which would at least get NC State into good bowl games periodically. We also think that it is reasonable to hope for greater success (contention for ACC titles) with a fresh start and a different environment to work in. Is it guaranteed? No. But nobody is going to be a sure thing here. SFN thinks that O’Brien would be a very good choice.

HUGE! Awesome job by Lee Fowler. We’re back on track, folks. Hiring a proven winner and weakening the competition by doing so.

  2. GrandWolf 12/06/2006 at 9:03 PM #

It has been announced this is 99% a done deal.

    I am gonna puke.

Way to go Lee. I have a finite number of years left on this planet to see NC State win it all. Now I have to outlive TOB’s tenure and then some.

Can’t really post what I think of Lee Fowler.

6 years ago, I would have never imagined that we could hire the head coach away from Boston College after he won 6 straight bowls there.

Our worst fears have been realized…

I think the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse just rode by my house on the way to Carter Finley. Honey, get the kids and pack the car, Satan has arrived…

    Big bummer…

Did PJ turn us down, or was this guy our first pick?

It is rather ironic that after firing Amato we are hiring the coach of one of the 3 teams that Amato beat this year. Nevertheless, we’re getting a coach that has proven he can consistently win in this league.

GrandWolf, what is wrong with TOB???

  7. tvp 12/06/2006 at 9:10 PM #

GW – hate to say it, but we aren’t wining it all in football….ever.

At least not in the next decade, no matter who we hire.

I’ll be more than happy to go to the Peach/Gator/Orlando bowls and knock out 7-10 wins each year.

  8. choppack1 12/06/2006 at 9:10 PM #

So how did he do against Butch Davis when Miami was struggling – or was he at BC then?

Oh well, I guess I should be happy. High level hire, his teams play w/ discipline. It’s just hard to get excited about what kind of football we’ll see…Of course, that’s only because I was hoping to see what Paul Johnson would do here – hoping he’d do for us what he did for Ga Southern and Navy.

I am very excited to have a proven winner as our coach. I would be very happy to have 8-9 wins a year and win 6 straight bowl games (or even get to 6 straight bowls)

  12. NCST890 12/06/2006 at 9:12 PM #

It’s done. Over. Stop bitchin’ about it…you cannot freaking change it.

Let’s be positive and give Coach O’Brien our steadfast support until HE PROVES to have been a bad hire. You simply cannot condemn him and/or his future until that point. Shut up, sit down and collect yourselves.

  13. packpigskinfan23 12/06/2006 at 9:12 PM #

wow…. I really dont know what to think.

    Good Coach. OBrien will win.
Will he take us much to a BCS bowl?! who knows.
Will he take us to bowls more consistatnly then Chuck? more than likely…

not too thrilled with the hire however. it was a very safe one, and NOTHING like the national FULL search we were all looking for. As far as we KNOW we only interviewed him and him alone. we have heard that Johnson didnt even get a full interview. that is absurd. cancelling Fishers interview was unthinkable.

    FIRE LEE FOWLER ALREADY!!!!!

  14. packfanstk 12/06/2006 at 9:15 PM #

    Tom O’Brien all-time against the Top 25:
    7 wins
    21 losses

Tom O’Brien all-time against teams that finished the season in the AP Top 25:
    4 wins
    22 losses

Tom O’Brien all-time against Miami, Virginia Tech, and Florida State:
    3 win
    15 losses

Fellas, this sounds like the gridiron version of Herb Sendek. A good record without being really good. Can’t win meaningful games against quality opponents. Can’t challenge the big boys, much less be a big boy. This hire sucks enormous weenies if true. Do we really want to hire someone that was outcoached by Chuck Amato? This makes me want to throw up on Jed’s head.

  15. WestCoast 12/06/2006 at 9:16 PM #

    TOB > CTC
Relax on the TOB bashing already. The man did a fine job at BC without the support like he’ll have here. For those of you bummed out about this potential hire, we have to get those 8 win years before we can get the 11 win years. TOB has had many 8 win years, and with step up in everything at State…he has all the tools to get to 11 a year.

  16. NCStateDud92 12/06/2006 at 9:16 PM #

Shame on anybody who wants him gone already. The man has not even coached ONE SINGLE game for us and you want him fired. 3 straight 9-3 seasons in a town where they could give a rats ass about college athletics is not only admirable, it is amazing. TOB is not the splash hire that Cowher would be but he a VERY GOOD coach that will graduate players, teach the fundamentals and win the vast majority of the time. To anybody who already is calling for his head, give your LTR’s to people who support the football team and coach. He deserves better than the trash being thrown out by some people.

I was very excited about Johnson… for whatever reason, O’Brien doesn’t do the same for me. Maybe just because I “know” him better… maybe because he let us beat him… regardless, it’s a step up, but I think we’ll look back in 10 years and think, “Damn, we could’ve had Paul Johnson!”.

  18. bigpacman 12/06/2006 at 9:18 PM #

Did anyone see the Dienhart (ESPN) article yesterday. It looks like STOCKSTILL may be the mid major play if we don’t land the big one.

Fire Lee Fowler for hiring Sidney Lowe and Tom O’Brien. Smart, very smart. Some of you will complain over anything. Give the guy his due.

I’m happy to be a Wolfpacker. The future looks bright in both sports once again.

  20. packpigskinfan23 12/06/2006 at 9:22 PM #

I have a feeling that in 10 years we will REALLY be wishing we didnt cancel that interview with Jimbo Fisher….

    oh well, time will tell

here’s to Coach O Brien!!!! We got an Irishmen now!!!!
    =)

  21. RedTerror7483 12/06/2006 at 9:23 PM #

Hope this is true, I did not want PJ. Everyone was wanting someone with head coaching experience and recruiting experience well we got it, if true. He has proven he can win and his teams have looked very disciplined. I thought there were way to many risk involved with bringing in PJ and that staff.

  22. Karpaasi 12/06/2006 at 9:24 PM #

All joking aside, what’s done is done. O’Brien will get his chance, and I’ll still suppor the pack.

Still shocked about the pick, but hopefully we’ll learn more about why he was chosen.

  23. justaguy 12/06/2006 at 9:28 PM #

Ignore the complainers. If Bear Bryant were raised from the dead and became head coach at NCSU there would be complainers. “He lost 85 games. That’s more than twice as many as Amato.”

  24. choppack1 12/06/2006 at 9:28 PM #

Oh, don’t get me wrong – I’ll support him.

I can’t say I’m itching to go the spring game like I would be if we’d hired Paul Johnson or even a new OC.

But hey, maybe I should take some of my own medicine. You know, I’ve wondered why we haven’t played smart football the last 4 years. Well, you know what they say – be careful what you wish for! We’ve got a guy whose teams play w/ discipline, kids graduate, and who goes to bowl games.

We got the station wagon. Of course, they can get you where you want to go!

  25. NCST890 12/06/2006 at 9:33 PM #

    I agree with NCStateDud92.

I also am sick to death of my TarHeel co-workers asking me (every day since BD’s intro presser) if “us” wuffies are jealous because they got a “great coach”.

Coach O’Brien will be a great hire given time and support. He will not open restaurants bearing his name, nor will he cry at his intro presser. He is also not a NCSU grad. He hasn’t a storied past at our great university. But, I think that this is a positive step.

If anyone wants to sell their season tix or LTR, email me at [email protected]. I BELIEVE, DAMN IT, and so should you!
