SFN’s Take: TOB > PJ

SFN has been hearing from a variety of sources that Boston College head man Tom O’Brien has emerged as a serious contender for the NC State job. As you may know, O’Brien has taken some heat from the Eagle faithful for not being able to get BC over the proverbial hump. While we agree that O’Brien may have maxed out what he is able to accomplish in Beantown, we do not believe that his ceiling would necessarily be limited at NC State.

O’Brien is supposedly willing to make a move because Boston is a pro sports town, almost exclusively. BC also has a small alumni base, which has led to good Eagle teams getting subpar bowl bids. The argument is that better bowls would lead to more recruiting momentum, as would a thriving, college-town environment – and ultimately, a chance at more success at NC State.

Of course, you might note that you could say the same thing about Paul Johnson. There is some truth to that. However, we believe that Tom O’Brien has some clear advantages over PJ – (i) BCS conference experience; (ii) has recruited at least some premium athletes; (iii) less potential to be negatively recruited against successfully; and (iv) a stronger staff (with pretty remarkable continuity).

O’Brien is no spring chicken, but young enough (58) to have a good ten year run at NC State. Plus, we already know his likely “floor” – 7-9 win seasons, which would at least get NC State into good bowl games periodically. We also think that it is reasonable to hope for greater success (contention for ACC titles) with a fresh start and a different environment to work in. Is it guaranteed? No. But nobody is going to be a sure thing here. SFN thinks that O’Brien would be a very good choice.

I know this has been asked many times before but where can I listen to the game online? my antenna is having a bitchy day

PJ has only won 3 games in 5 years against 1A opponents with winning records and they all finished at 7-5. I don’t have time to run his numbers, I’m watching the BB game. I think his numbers would look a lot like TOB’s.

    I’m for the mystery guy.

We are never going to hire Steve Logan, just stop. People talk about how he lost to us this season. That was a different team than the one that lost to ECU and UNC. THREE straight 9-3 years is very good. 7-9 wins seems to be ceiling for BC, not TOB. After this season I will take TOB any day, PJ would be a very good hire also, but I am just so sick of people trashing TOB. He has done a very good job at BC, and would do a very good job here. IF we do hire TOB I have a feeling that people will run him out of down just like they did to Sendek, which would be unfortunate.

Bank on it. Trouble is, O’Brien will be winning 7 to 9 games for umpteen years and he will be like getting rid of flypaper. We are offering BC a gift.

Here’s a scary thought..if LF had been AD in the early 80’s and decided to only focus on “big-name’ coaches from big time programs guess who would not have been hired…JIM VALVANO (IONA). Don’t be so blinded by the “sexy” pick that you miss the best pick. TOB’s record, God help me, looks like foootball version of Herb. Beat the nobodies, split with the mid-level teams, lose nearly all games against top teams. I’ll will be darned if I am spending money for tickets to relive that mess!

  18. justaguy 12/06/2006 at 8:49 PM #

    75-45 record.
6 straight seasons with 8 or more wins.
The longest current bowl win streak.

    Good luck coach o’brian

People, don’t act like the idiots the media often portrays us as.

We just hired a guy who has gone 9-3 the past three seasons and some of you are pissed. If Chuck had done that you’d build a gold statute of him outside the stadium.

  20. old13 12/06/2006 at 8:54 PM #

Nothing against TOB, but this is NOT the right hire for NCSU at this time. Foulup needs to go IMMEDIATELY!! Otherwise NCSU athletics will be dragging bottom for years to come.

  21. Lee Fowler 12/06/2006 at 8:54 PM #

very safe, middle of the road pick. par for the course for NC State.

  22. wolpfack 12/06/2006 at 8:55 PM #

In the kindest of ways, F$CK Fowl-up for his “I’ve got 2 candidates and they’re both HCs and I dont plan on thinking outside the box” routine…

Nothing against TOB, but seriously, for a nation-wide search, this sure as hell hasnt resembled one…

Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers said the coaching search for North Carolina State, his alma mater, is over.

“It’s Tom O’Brien,” Rivers said of the Boston College coach. “I got a call this morning and they said it was a done deal.”

Frankly, I gotta give Lee Fowler a ton of credit, and I NEVER thought I would say that.

He got a top notch coach proven at the highest levels.

He kept the name of the candidate quiet until literally the day it went down.

He had the balls to risk the wrath of Swofford by hiring another ACC coach.

    So….(gasp!)….Good Job, “Coach” Fowler!
