SFN’s Take: TOB > PJ

SFN has been hearing from a variety of sources that Boston College head man Tom O’Brien has emerged as a serious contender for the NC State job. As you may know, O’Brien has taken some heat from the Eagle faithful for not being able to get BC over the proverbial hump. While we agree that O’Brien may have maxed out what he is able to accomplish in Beantown, we do not believe that his ceiling would necessarily be limited at NC State.

O’Brien is supposedly willing to make a move because Boston is a pro sports town, almost exclusively. BC also has a small alumni base, which has led to good Eagle teams getting subpar bowl bids. The argument is that better bowls would lead to more recruiting momentum, as would a thriving, college-town environment – and ultimately, a chance at more success at NC State.

Of course, you might note that you could say the same thing about Paul Johnson. There is some truth to that. However, we believe that Tom O’Brien has some clear advantages over PJ – (i) BCS conference experience; (ii) has recruited at least some premium athletes; (iii) less potential to be negatively recruited against successfully; and (iv) a stronger staff (with pretty remarkable continuity).

O’Brien is no spring chicken, but young enough (58) to have a good ten year run at NC State. Plus, we already know his likely “floor” – 7-9 win seasons, which would at least get NC State into good bowl games periodically. We also think that it is reasonable to hope for greater success (contention for ACC titles) with a fresh start and a different environment to work in. Is it guaranteed? No. But nobody is going to be a sure thing here. SFN thinks that O’Brien would be a very good choice.

The “mystery” candiate might be TOB, before today no one was talking about him.

Also, if the Xanga guy is legit, we are in serious trouble.

ESPN poll has us as the worst of the 4 big coaching jobs available.

We cant even pull our own state.

geez – if we have flubbed on Paul Johnson, I’m going to be po’d.

I’m sorry, but I dont’ share the enthusiasm of a coach who only had to beat Wake Forest to win the ACC, but failed to do so. I guess I should give him credit for beating UMd, Clemson, and FSU this year, but still – I know how my fellow wolfpackers will react to consecutive years of 7-5, 8-4 win we keep on losing the big one – especially if the coach is playing a vanilla style of football!

*Now reality from Coker’s Miami profile before the season…*

*In the 25 years that the University of Miami has been a dominant force in college football, no Hurricanes head coach has won more games in his first five seasons than Larry Coker. Presiding over one of the most successful five-year stretches in Miami football history, Coker quickly earned a reputation as one of college football’s top coaches. He is now in his sixth season as head football coach at the University of Miami.*

    LO-F-L

If he was so great as described in their media profile, then why did they just fire him again?

I was driving back from Charlotte and the radio ( one of the sports talk channels ) annouced that TOB was our new Coach. I can’t wait to log on and nothing?????????

No reason PJ couldn’t put together a great staff here (if we’re willing to pay for it). One good place to start – Nebraska great Tommy Frazier as QB’s coach. He’s looking for a job after getting fired as HC at a small-time Nebraska college. Who better to teach the option offense than the greatest option QB to ever play the game? If you don’t remember, this is the guy who beat a Miami defense with Ray Lewis and Warren Sapp (and they say the option won’t work against speedy D’s) and delivered the single worst beatdown in New Years Day bowl history to Florida.

Ok, back to reality. Baby steps. Let’s get a HC hired first.

Without reading the hundreds of posts before my own, I would argue with charactering NC State as a “thriving, college-town” environment. We are many things good, but our “college town” environment ain’t.

“I know how my fellow wolfpackers will react to consecutive years of 7-5, 8-4 win we keep on losing the big one – especially if the coach is playing a vanilla style of football!”

It was okay during the Sheridan years, it will be okay w/ many if TOB hits that same plateau. I was very happy with Sheridan. Sheridan was a model football coach that ran a model program. But he could just not get over the hump in big games.

Tom O’Brien I fear will be the same. I will pull for him to get NC State to the top but I see O’Brien being a very Sheridan-esque “Bridesmaid” but never the Bride. Many at State will be happy with perpetual 8 or 9 wins.

A week after saying he hadn’t even been contacted about the North Carolina State coaching vacancy, Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Norm Chow has withdrawn his name from consideration for the job, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported Wednesday.

I would be happy with either one. Let’s take whoever wins the bowl game.

Bet money that if one or the other is confirmed as NC State’s next head coach, his team loses that bowl game.

Guys, it is going to be Tom O’Brien as our next coach. Earlier in the day I was upset at the thought of this but if you do enough research you will come to understand that this is a good hire. Consistently wins at a non-football school with bad facilities. If he were winning 8,9,10 games a year here we would be in the bigger bowls because of our fan support. BC always gets a raw deal on bowl games because their fans suck. He ALWAYS has a tremendous offensive line and defensive line…which the last time I checked was something we rarely have. He always seems to groom good quarterbacks. He has had a very consistent coaching staff over the years at Boston College. His staff is very loyal. His recruiting classes our usually about where ours fall with regards to national ranking. Which means he can recruit. There are no question marks about his offense. There are always pretty sound and balanced. They make very few mistakes (penalties). TOB is an x-marine. Don’t think we’ll have disciplin problems.Let’s all welcome TOB. WE will definitley win with him as head coach.

I’m in agreement with Section Six

    Tom O’Brien? Really?

    Tom O’Brien= Cadilac
    Paul Johnson= Viper

Both are good, but PJ is the sexier pick. After this year, I would take 9-3 year in and year out. Their crappy bowls are due to bad fan support, Pack fans travel, 9-3 would get us to Nashville, Jax and Orlando. I love win/win situations.

^I dont know Johnson seems more like a Hummer to me

  20. 98st8 12/06/2006 at 7:06 PM #

NCStateDud92^I agree with most of what you just said…but…neither one is a sexy pick at all. I do think both would make good hires

  21. NCStateDud92 12/06/2006 at 7:06 PM #

    ^Whatever, you get the point.

If we hire Tom O’Brien, I’ve given my last dime to the WPC. This is the SAME guy who absolutely BLEW the game against us this year. If he had coached a LICK, we lose that game. Remember his spineless move by not attempting a field goal (a 43 yarder) that would have given BC an eight point lead just a few seconds before Evans whips BC! This guy sucks!!! We need to hire Steve Logan NOW!

    Tom O’Brien all-time against the Top 25:
    7 wins
    21 losses

Tom O’Brien all-time against teams that finished the season in the AP Top 25:
    4 wins
    22 losses

Tom O’Brien all-time against Miami, Virginia Tech, and Florida State:
    3 win
    15 losses

  23. NeverGiveUp 12/06/2006 at 7:10 PM #

If TOB floor is 7-9 wins, what’s his ceiling? 8-9 wins?

Looks like a perfect hire for LF. TOB will win just enough to never get fired, but never enough to win a title.
LF will never have to go through another coaching search!

That is a perfect hire in Foulup’s world.

  24. kozmokramer 12/06/2006 at 7:13 PM #

    Steve Logan – Mercedes
    Paul Johnson – Buick
    Tom O’Brien – Ford Escort

That does it for me. PJ or bust.
