Roundball Check-in

Basketball season is hitting its stride…and once exams are over then the season will be moving ahead at full steam. If you haven’t had the opportunity to watch a lot of games to this point in the season then Dave Sez can help catch you up on some observations.

NC State is currently 6-2 with a (hopeful) win this weekend that could push the Pack’s record to 7-2 as the season approaches 1/3rd completion. Before the season began, most Wolfpackers would have GLADLY taken a 7-2 to start the season WITH Engin Atsur’s presence. Can anyone really ask more than a 7-2 start considering that Atsur has missed two and half weeks of play?

As you know, we are a big fan of numbers and statistics and Section Six always delivers some nice items for us to ponder. Also, we missed some bball coverage over last few days and S6 shared the following after the Savannah State win:

McCauley needs to be taking more of Grant’s possessions on a regular basis. Up to this point in the season, Ben has only used an average (~20%) proportion of possessions, but I think it’s becoming evident that he can handle more. He shoots the ball well, he doesn’t turn it over, and he has a decent assist rate, which means he isn’t a black hole in the post from which the ball never returns. That’s a guy who needs to have his hands on it more often.

ACCNow has also been focusing a little more on statistics and numbers recently. They also highlight that:

The Pack is the nation’s fifth-best shooting team on 2-point shots (59.1 percent) but alas is stumbling along at 244th on 3s (31.7 percent).

Obviously, Atsur’s absence has played a big role in the Wolfpack’s struggles behind the arc. Additionally, we expect Courtney Fells to gradually improve his shooting and overall play with much needed experience. (Of course, it would have been nice if Fells could have seen a little more playing time last year, but we will save that for another day.)

And bad “traffic patterns”? Reynolds too hot? Seats too hard? Please. That RBC Center has spoiled people!!!

The hockey arena is turning State fans into a wine and cheese crowd. If you don’t like the traffic pattern around Reynold park on Hillsborough and walk the 1/4 mile to the arena. This reminds me of the people that will drive around Wal-Mart for 20 minutes trying to get a space up front instead of walking from the back of the lot. No tears from me when the ticker dies when you 60.

^I have walked from Gorman St to Renyolds to see the women play before!!!! I dont wanna hear about “traffic patterns”

but then again I have walked from Gorman to C-F as well….

    maybe I am just crazy.

^oh yeah that was not directed towards you at all tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc…. just the whole traffic thing.

“are we finally entering a period where we can just plain old root for the team rather than suffer the anguish of coaching mediocrity?”

Unfortunately Foulup is still there to . . . er . . . foulup! (When will he lash out against the Pack fans and NCSU alumni again!)

My opinion about the lack of attendance is the lack of a quality apponent. Get some real headline teams to play and get some TV action and the place would rock it out. The Reynolds’ games are about history and there needs to be a game that has that potential to carry on that history of winning against great teams in such a great invironment…

Here is the complete quote from Dave Sez about the WVU game:

“Was I praising Sidney Lowe earlier? He only played six players in this game! And one of those only played eight minutes! Four different guys went the full 40 minutes. Sidney, Sidney, Sidney. That’s just dumb. I don’t care how bad your seventh and eighth best players are, they need to see the floor for a few minutes to give the other guys a rest. You just can’t play 4/5 of your starting lineup for the whole game and expect them to make big plays at the end. This game was winnable, but the Pack just didn’t have the legs late. And don’t get me started on how they handled the Mountaineers 1-3-1 defense. It looked like State hadn’t practiced against a 1-3-1 at all. I hope that isn’t a blind spot from Lowe’s NBA background.”

He might just have a point about only playing 5+. I was wondering about this myself when I looked at the box score (I was not able to watch the game). If you look at the roster there are actually 15 players listed. 1 or 2 (Lew ?) are injured, & 3 others are otherwise unavailable; this leaves at least 10. Now, I realize that 4 of those 10 are walk-ons but Dave’s argument is that it doesn’t really matter how bad your bench is; resting your starters is more important than momentarily losing more ground on the score-board. I have to admit that I tend to agree, although I wouldn’t say that it was “dumb”.
Since I did not see the game I can’t comment on Dave’s analysis of Lowe’s ability/inability to penetrate the 1-3-1 defense.

The CNNSI page: Another thing that should be noticed is that there is a certain 1st year coach at Arizona State that didn’t make that top-10 list. Lowe, who’s never been a head coach at the college level makes #3, but “whatshisname” at ASU who’s been a head coach at the college level continuously for the past 13 seasons is conspicuously absent. This is simply more confirmation that NC State basketball is in better shape now.

Could it be that Sid knows what he is doing???
Maybe he feels like those guys need all the playing time they can get before the going gets tough in January. He knows he’ll have a seven man rotation for the regular season, but Atsur is the only guy with extensive Division 1 playing experience. So maybe he’s teaching them now, thinking that perhaps once the real season starts they’ll get some rest then.
I remember V saying many years ago, “A deep bench is vastly overrated. With proper use of your timeouts coupled with all of the TV timeouts, the kids get time to rest. Besides, these guys are only 20 years old! They can run all night!”
I’m only guessing about Sid’s strategy, but I believe he’s smart enough not to run the gas out of the tank before the real race starts.
I think they’re going to make us proud this year.
    GO PACK!!!

“We shouldn’t be taking scholies from people.

    1) That dude who went to Georgetown, did we not all rip Georgetown for doing that very same thing?

    2) He might develop into something. Unlikely, but we owe it to him to give him a chance.”

First, I defended JTIII over that.

Second, its up to the kid. If he wants to play ball it might not happen here. If he wants to sit the bench, he can stay. Most kids transfer for selfish reasons. Playing time being #1. The kid at G’Town had no chance of playing meaningful minutes there. And he wanted to ball. I’d transfer as well.

And with the class we have coming in next year its going to be tough to get Lew on the court. If he loves playing ball, he’ll probably go somewhere else.

“I remember V saying many years ago, “A deep bench is vastly overrated. With proper use of your timeouts coupled with all of the TV timeouts, the kids get time to rest. Besides, these guys are only 20 years old! They can run all night!””

I don’t think that applies anymore. The shot clock, the pace of the game and the level of intensity on the defensive end is totally different than it once was.

Regarding WVa, Sid was only trying to do what he could to win. However, he does need to be testing our guys limits. He’ll only find them out in these types of games.

  10. Texpack 12/13/2006 at 10:09 PM #

Only Sidney knows just how bad those last few guys on the bench are. I would still lean toward trying to steal a few minutes with some of the guys farther down the bench. Having said that, an 8 player rotation is plenty deep enough. With Atsur and Ferguson available we will be there.

  11. wufpack 12/13/2006 at 10:31 PM #

Who should be playing? There’s Albritton and the 3 try-out guys. That’s it beyond the 6 that are playing. Albritton was an obvious liability on both ends of the court in the few minutes he played against Wofford , and hasn’t seen the court since (except in mop-up duty). His man lit him up on defense, and he had like 2 turnovers the 3 times he touched the ball on offense. Against Wofford. What would he have done against somebody like Michigan, UVA, or WVU? And he’s the invited walk-on of the bunch and has been practicing with the team for years, unlike the other 3 who have only been there a few weeks, and weren’t invited to play anywhere. Playing a tired ACC-quality guy gives us a better chance to win than playing someone who is clearly overmatched on both ends of the court and will cost you a few points per minute of playing time. As some have said, when we get Ferguson and if we can get Atsur back we’ll be 8 deep. That’s plenty. Probably half of Sendek’s tenure we didn’t even go 8 men deep. Duke has probably only gone 8 men deep about 5 of the last 10 years, they’ve gone with 7 or even 6 men the rest of the time.

  12. Rochester 12/13/2006 at 10:36 PM #

When Atsur and Ferguson are available, no one will be looking to the walk-on walk-ons (as opposed to Nieman) for anything. I believe three of them came from a tryout session, as opposed to most walk-ons, who are invited to join the team. May be a fine distinction, but I think it’s worth noting, and I doubt those guys will see much PT.

As to WVa’s 1-3-1, it baffled us pretty good, and we didn’t really have much of an answer for it. There were too many passes that made me cringe even before they were intercepted, because I could see where they were headed.

  13. Astral Rain 12/14/2006 at 5:08 AM #

If Lew wants to leave, I’m fine with that- I’m just saying don’t push him out the door. I’m sure he knows right now he doesn’t deserve much PT.

Anyone see the Wake game last night? The people who picked us for last place obviously overrated Wake. The final margin was 15 points, but it wasn’t that close much of the time.

Outside of Kyle Visser the Deacs looked punchless. Israel Smith is very fast at point guard and can get the ball upcourt in a hurry, but he’s a little too hyper sometimes and who knows where the ball’s going to end up. He’ll probably turn out good in time, and maybe even have a few awesome games here or there this year, but he’s definitely still a freshman at this point.

Huh, Danny boy, how about some pointers as to where these tid bits of info are on the pages you linked. I’ve scanned two pages hurriedly, but I can’t find the topics. It’s probably just me though. Thanks.

BigRed, great commentary on the Savannah ST game there! Nice post!

RabidWolf, and I thought I was the one who possibly overly optimistic?! I’m not counting on anything this season, but I’m thinking that this team may be more capable than anyone could have ever dreamed coming into this season. They are already focused and playing as a TEAM , and exhibiting a desire which is so refreshing, that you can’t help but bear down and yearn for them to win out at every outing. Now, if we can get healthy, and stay healthy, there may be a possibility of upsetting the apple cart a time or two this season.

I think I can speak for everyone when I say that so far, there has been nothing but one positive, coming right after another, every time we’ve seen anything labeled NC STATE on the hardwood this season.

IT IS FLAT OUT AWESOME, WITH A CAPITOL “A”, BABY!!!

Let us enjoy while we can. If we get to beating unc-ch then the plaudits will turn to brickbats but it will be fun.

  19. nycfan 12/14/2006 at 1:44 PM #

A problem with the Savannah State game may have been that it did not show up on any of the official ACC schedule releases b/c it got added late. Thus it is not listed in the ACC Handbook or in other preseason mags — internet fans wouldn’t overlook this, but casual or non-net fans may have been surprised to pick up the paper and learn the Pack had played the night before. At the very least, they may not have gotten enough of a heads-up to plan to go.

Add that with a weak opponent and attendance suffers.

  20. Dan 12/14/2006 at 2:28 PM #

Red, those are simply the services that report on their teams. They dont really have dedicated pages to each individual high school team.

The best one by far is the Marion Indiana paper. Lots of Marion HS stories.

The worst one is a tie between Marietta’s coverage and Fayetteville’s coverage.

Still, its fairly easy to keep track of how the kids are doing.

From what I’ve read, all of the kids are tearing it up. I think Julius Mays has a strong chance at being a top 100 type recruit.

  21. Rochester 12/14/2006 at 2:43 PM #

The Wolfpacker a couple of issues ago quoted someone (maybe Dave Telep) as calling Mays a Top 25 recruit, so he may be much more than a top 100 guy.

  22. Gratitude 12/14/2006 at 2:52 PM #

I wasnt really impressed with the cnnsi blurb about Lowe. The writer failed to mention that he lost an all-ACC caliber center to the NBA and also didnt say anything about the quality of recruits that Lowe is bringing in despite saying something about the recruiting skills of nearly all the other nine coaches profiled.

“I remember V saying many years ago, “A deep bench is vastly overrated. With proper use of your timeouts coupled with all of the TV timeouts, the kids get time to rest. Besides, these guys are only 20 years old! They can run all night!””

I remember Lefty saying something while at Maryland that with TV timeouts the players should be able to play for 40 minutes.

There have been some changes in the game since then but most of those guys are in incredible shape. With the exception of some of the big guys I would guess most of them can handle it at this point in the season

Dan, gotcha. I’ll keep them handy. Thanks for the links!

After reading the Dave Sez’s comments, I looked at our roster and do not agree with him.

Harris and Delgand cannot play this year, since they are transfers. Ferguson cannto play yet.

    Atsur and Lewadonski are injured.

Albritton started the Wofford game, played 5 minutes, and was ineffective.

If Albritton could give us some effective minutes, like Nieman’s doing, I think he’d be playing. He did start our first game of the year.

Clark, Williams and Pittman just joined the team as walk-ons, when Lowe held try outs, since we needed bodies.

ACC level schools are rarely so lacking in personnel, they have to hold try outs. Les did this in the 1992-1993 season.

Once Lewadowski and Atsur are healthy and Ferguson is elgible, you potentially have a 9 man rotation.

Until those three are able to play, I just don’t see how we can get more than a six man rotation out of the roster we have.
