Post UVa Random Basketball Thoughts

We shared some thoughts in an updated game entry below, but I wanted to chime in with some more specific comments.

Reactive vs System?

After watching Sidney coach I have been very impressed with both his preparation and in game adjustments. During the games, he has made good use of his timeouts, changed defenses effectively and has his team playing hard without fouling (a must for a team with a short bench). His pre game acumen has been displayed by detecting weaknesses in the other team he can use to his advantage. The Michigan game is a great example of this. When scouting the game, Lowe noticed that McCauley had a speed advantage against the Michigan big men. He pulled Big Ben away from the basket, instructed him to drive and McCauley responded by leading the team with 19 points to go with his 8 rebounds.

What has been a refreshing change is the flexibility I see from the NC State bench. In the recent past NCSU has had a “run the system and it will work” mentality that has been frustrating albeit somewhat effective. We tried to force other teams to play how we wanted them to play. And when it worked it worked well. When our shots were falling and we were running the Princeton offense effectively we were a tough team to beat. We forced other teams to play defense for long periods of time and kept them from getting easy baskets. The problems came when we did not shoot well or for some reason the offense was not generating good shots. We did not react well when the plan was not working.

What I see from Lowe is a coach that reacts to game situations almost before they are happening. He calls timeouts before the other team makes a run. He changes defense to disrupt the other team’s chemistry and flow. He runs plays to take advantage of a “hot” player. He reacts to game situations instead of relying on a system that will not work universally.

It is good (even desirable) to have an over-riding offensive philosophy for your team. But you must realize when you need to look at option B.

Gavin Grant

I have seen many people getting down on Grant and am mystified by it.
Grant has been forced to play the toughest position on the court with little to no preparation. Has he been perfect? No. But he has performed very well against Michigan and against the best PG in the ACC (Sean Singletary). This can only make us better when Atsur returns. Also, I think you will be seeing Grant’s name being mentioned on all ACC rosters before the year is over.

End of Game situations

How refreshing is it to see an actual end of game play set up? Hit or miss all you can ask is to get an open look. This is so much better than the “run the offense” end game philosophy we have had in the recent past.

Player improvement

Fells, Costner, McCauley and Nieman have been playing very well despite a lack of playing time last year. This makes you wonder if the players have developed that much or if they should have played more last year. Either way it is great to see the poise and effort they displayed on Sunday.

About Rick

1992 and 2002 graduate from NCSU. Born and raised an NCSU fan. I remember the good ol' days and they weren't in the last 20 years.

Ah, there’s a lot the team can learn with a conference loss this early in the season. No one’s picked State to do anything this year, so we can be the surprise of the season.

Lowe looks to be a good coach; his enthusiasm and skills should get the team going.

N&O said we played one possession of zone all day. No box and 1s yesterday.

Reading the posts above is fun! You guys are bringing a positive energy to the table here.

While we are at it, let’s give a nod to Towe, Harris and Pete Strickland as well. Somebedy is doing a great job with the big men.

“N&O said we played one possession of zone all day. No box and 1s yesterday.”

I think that is an important point. Most people said we would have to go zone vs UVA. We have gone zone at critical times this year and will continue to do so, but Lowe clearly decided that UVA was no Michigan and he had to go man to control UVA’s shooters and play a more deliberate “clock” offense in order to get some rest on the court. Well, danged if Lowe’s man-to-man didn’t keep SS & JRR in check—until our guys ran out of gas…We just need a few more players to close the deal on a regular basis…

^ Agree completely. Sid is a leader and a good leader knows to listen to his team. Decades of College Basketball experience that are obviously not going to waste. Exotic zones and solid out of bounds plays come from practice drilling and that is in part due to assitant coaches taking guys aside for individual coaching. I love the statement Sid made where he refused to make an excuse out of his personnell issues. He said it would be disrespectful to the Virginia kids to say that. Good to hear Coach not using excuses to justify a loss, or giving his kids a reason to stop believing in themselves. Life is never fair, but fate tends to favor those who work the hardest. Our guys never stopped wotrking.

I echo what McWulfer said, if big Lew can just be a minor liability for 5 minutes a game he will be valuable in resting our frontcourt. But when a tall player gets a knee injury it always seems to heal slower. When we get Atsur and Ferguson we can use Grant a little bit to spell one or the other. Grant is certainly an all league candidate, and this while playing out of position for a couple of games.

Getting Degand would be a big break, but I would be stunned if the NCAA did anything as considerate as waiving a transfer rule to help a team with palyer issues, because it will open pandora’s box. I’m happy we at least get Ferg.

I don’t think anyone thinks there is any kind of chance that Degand is going to play this year. PapaJohn came back and said he meant to ask about Ferguson and pulled the wrong name.

I STILL SAY THAT McCAULEY IS A FUCKING MONSTER!!!!!!

HE REMINDS ME OF A CERTAIN PLAYER WHO SHOULD HAVE STAYED AT SCHOOL—-ANYBODY REMEMBER JOSH POWELL???

SMALLER BIG MAN, BUT AT TIMES UNSTOPPABLE!!

    A MONSTER!!!

McCauley reminds me on a JUCO player the was at State during the Robinson era (sorry to bring that up) named Brian D’Amico. An unheralded player who came up HUGE in several games at center for the ‘Pack (he seemed to play best vs. UNX). Let’s hope McCauley can be that big vs. Travels Walksborough errr….Tyler Hansborough.

When McCauley goes lefty, I see a smaller, quicker Todd Fuller. He certainly throws down hard like Fuller used to, and moves smoothly inside. He is amphibious () like Shackleford, and smart like Evtimov. And with Sid to teach him, he’s hustlin like Valvano’s teams used to hustle, beating his man down court, and with no prospect of a sideline break. Based on results thus far, I’m thinking he’s an all conference candidate.

Just watched Jimmy V’sspeach at the ESPY’S again. Everytime I see it I realize that we as fans of NCState are about as lucky as fans can be. We do a terrible amount of bitching and yet a part of our basketball history is one of the finest men to ever pace the sidelines of a basketball court. Not only that, he gave us a national championship. We have a lot to be thankful for.
