Coach Lowe Receiving Excellent Grades

With Alabama coming to town tonight amidst rising hopes for Wolfpack hoops, The Fayetteville Observer ran a piece that offered mid-term grades for Head Coach Sidney Lowe.

The results were outstanding.

RECRUITING: A

STRATEGIZING: B

MOTIVATING: B+

INTANGIBLES: A-

“The way I recruit is all about people skills,” Lowe said. “Certainly your university can bring a lot to the table and gets you in doors a lot of people can’t get into. But you’re dealing with a lot of people. You have to recruit the parents, you have to recruit the coaches, high school or AAU and in some cases you even have to recruit the girlfriend. It’s about allowing the kids to see the opportunity that’s there for them. And different kids have different dreams and goals.”

Perhaps more impressive has been the Wolfpack coach’s ability to identify favorable matchups and have his players execute accordingly each game.

Statistics can’t quite measure intelligence. But the Wolfpack is leading the ACC in field goal percentage (.507) and is second to No. 2 North Carolina in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.27), an indication that Lowe’s emphasis on smarts is getting through.

Perhaps the greatest measure of a leader is in others’ willingness to follow. And so far, Lowe’s contagious enthusiasm has invigorated the program.

“Coach Lowe has a Wolfpack history,” Grant said. “This is his alma mater. So this is not just a job for him; it’s his passion. He loves to be here. And because of that we understand he’s doing everything he can to lead us in the right direction.”

Said assistant coach Larry Harris: “Coach Lowe is a smart man who understands communication with young people. He deals with that very well. And his experience throughout his playing and coaching career is invaluable. You have the NBA piece where he can show kids that path. But shoot, you also have a point guard who won a national championship. So from a college standpoint, when he says, ‘Hey we can win a national championship here,’ he did it. So he should know.”

Note: The FAYOBS really deserves high praise for continued excellent coverage of NC State Basketball. A special thanks for the FAYOBS for their great work throughout 2006.

“I LOVE THIS TEAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Me too.

Good stuff tonight against a quality team. If we get Engin back and stay healthy, this year is going to be fun. I’m looking forward to a road win on Saturday.

Could not watch, looking at the stats as the game went this team never rolled over, fought it out to the end. Not a bad showing at home versus the #6 team to only loose by 7 considering they were down more at half.

Good coaching job and playing. Would love to be closer to hav ethe ability to watch this team. May have to find tickets to Maryland at Maryland.

Mike Hoggard reminded me about back in the seventies, when the starting point guard on NC State’s first National Championship Basketball Team, who later went on to play in the NBA, also had a second very successful collegiate career playing a great second base in a WOLFPACK uniform.

Ah, back when the professional $port$ didn’t rule every move a great AMATEUR athlete made from his high school days on. I’ll bet Monte Towe wouldn’t trade those days for the world.

Just got back. It was a night in which nothing seemed to right for the boys. I liked their effort on defense the entire game. IMO Bama is a legit top 10 team — Lowe shut down Davidson, their star, but their other players picked up the slack and played discipined, fundamental basketball.

State made some bad decisions, and took some bad shots, which is to be expected of a young team. But they also took many good shots that just didn’t fall. It was an uncharacteristically bad shooting night for the Pack, and for most of the game on offense they just didn’t look like themselves. They just couldn’t hit anything — threes, twos, FTs.

Nevertheless, they did not quit. They just found their stride way too late. They finished the game really, really well, and that is something I hope they can build on. With 3 minutes to go, Sidney’s team had Wolfpack fans just hoping they’d make the game respectable; with 20 seconds they had everyone in the building thinking they just might pull it off.

I love the hustle and scrap of this team. They will not give up. Furthermore, they seem well coached. They made the fouls when they had to, and they made them quickly. But they also forced key turnovers down the stretch.

Did anyone expect Ferguson to play defense as well as he did? Man, that kid can hustle! I hope he gets his confidence in shooting soon; he’s a player.

In short, I wish we could have won; I hope we can build on what we learned from this game. Let’s go steal one at Cincinnati.

Just back as well. The comeback was great to watch. I will say a couple things to be critical.

The passing was almost ridiculously lazy. Throughout the whole game. Soft passes. Soft.

    Free Throws. Geez.

The offense until the late run was way out of sync. I dont know what was going on. It was almost robotic.

Still, they played hard on D, especially Furgeson. Hendrix was killing us early, and Sid made a nice adjustment getting the defense to rotate over. Steele is just a phenomenal player. Really. That kid is great.

Alabama played very well I thought. I thought we were out of sync the entire first half. They definitely shot the ball well.

How about those two ungodly 3’s from Costner? Incredible!!!

“With 3 minutes to go, Sidney’s team had Wolfpack fans just hoping they’d make the game respectable; with 20 seconds they had everyone in the building thinking they just might pull it off.”

    Exactly the way I felt.

“In short, I wish we could have won; I hope we can build on what we learned from this game.”

This young group is definitely learning and building every time out. But maybe even moreso, Sidney Lowe is building something which is ultimately more beneficial to the university as a whole. That would be national recognition of the Wolfpack basketball program once again and pride in NC State University once again also. Just another block, in a solid foundation for the future.

    GO PACK!!!

Everybody on the court for us tonight will be back next year (probably), in addition to Degand, Hickson, Smith, Thomas, and possibly one other. The future looks really bright. The team is well-coached and has the right attitude, they just need the bodies. I’m just looking forward to getting Atsur back, and hopefully having a decent season this year. I’m just really proud of this team.

Having said that….my God I hate losing.

Amazing finish. Costner is the real deal, and he’s only going to get better.

Something to point out is that Big Ben has established himself as a premier post player. To play like he has against some of the earlier nobodies is great, but doesn’t really mean that much. With this performance against one of the nation’s premier front lines and with his strong performance against Michigan, we’re finding out that he really is an All-ACC caliber player.

This was one of the worst games I’ve seen Gavin play all year. His shot was way off, but he kept putting up perimeter jumpers. I can live with 5 turnovers to 10 assists, but 14 shots for 7 points? You’ve got to do better than that. He’s got to learn to drive the ball and get to the line when his shot isn’t falling, and he didn’t do that at all (0 FTs). When you’re as good at getting to the rim as Gavin is, you have to do better than that.

Along with his ridiculous dunk in the first half over Davidson, Fells showed a spark in the second half of what I think he’s capable of. A few posessions in a row, he got open for jumpers or drove and drew a foul. He has amazing potential to be a dynamic scorer. He’s got a beautiful jumpshot that he can hit off the dribble or off a turnaround, and he’s got a pretty good handle (as witnessed by that amazing rebound/dribble-while-falling-down/outlet play). I’m just waiting for him to realize how good he is and explode one of these days.

If I were a coach, I would require my point guard to watch tape of Ron Steele dribbling off screens. Too few players do that well, and Steele is great at it.

I watched the telecast and though I hate to see State loose I really like the way this team fights. Holes and weaknesses are there but lack of will isn’t one of the problems. I still think there will be some tough times this year but I really enjoy watching this team.

This being the only live basketball topic, I couldn’t help but ask if anyone else noticed that Arizona State was hosting the Sleep America Classic tournament this week. I kid you not, that is the name of the tournament. Not looking to start trouble, but the name just struck me as kind of funny for some reason. I only wish it were on TV so I could see NC A&T, Davidson, and Ohio duke it out with ASU for the coveted Sleep America Classic trophy.

McCauley needs more touches. He gives us so many scoring opportunities.

Kind of funny you say, uh Rochester? I’d say that’s freakin hilarious!!!

If the nightgown fits, wear it. It’s the ever expanding theory of the PO, being practically applied, in bedrooms all across the nation.

  19. redfred2 12/21/2006 at 11:01 PM #

^I’d say it’s been there all along anyway. Make passes, constant motion, get everyone involved, don’t be too aggressive, backdoors, take your time, no need to rush the shot.

    Alright, I’ll stop.

  20. redfred2 12/21/2006 at 11:34 PM #

“the coveted Sleep America Classic trophy.”

Appearing in a mausoleum, strike that, I meant a “gymnasium,” near you.

    Sorry, I cannot help myself.

  21. redfred2 12/22/2006 at 12:09 AM #

I noticed the teams vying for “the coveted Sleep America Classic trophy” were…NC A&T, Davidson, Ohio, and ASU, as you listed them in order. But I also noticed the word duke. Then I thought really hard about it. Let’s see now, that would be an OOC opponent for them way out there at ASU wouldn’t it now, and I knew right then and there, that I misread your meaning. Inviting a team like Duke to play in their own tournament, especially in OOC play, would never get ASU an invite to the big dance, now would it?

K has always had Herb’s number anyway. I guess it’s a “Sleep Number” now though. 😉

  22. Rochester 12/22/2006 at 10:23 AM #

    Sleep America Classic update:

    ASU 71, NC A&T 66
    Davidson 83, Ohio 74

ASU vs. Davidson tonight. Herb’s still facing off against the best the state of North Carolina has to offer.

  23. redfred2 12/22/2006 at 11:41 AM #

It’s TROPHY TIME!!! I think it’s a 1/32th scale bronze, of a fully adjustable hidaway bed, in the upright position of course, that actually vibrates when you clap your hands together. That place is going to be littered with ’em in a few years.

  24. Rochester 12/22/2006 at 6:46 PM #

Actually, they don’t get to keep this year’s trophy. They’ll be handing it over to Davidson. “Wildcats win!” I guess the fans in Arizona better get used to hearing that. Next year they’ll invite UNC Asheville in place of Davidson to keep the playing field level.
