Coach Lowe on WPTF: Two Football Players Joining the Team

On WPTF 680 AM this morning, Coach Lowe (who is a frequent guest, which is nice) told host Jack Boston that two freshmen, Darrell Davis and Jarvis Williams, are practicing with the basketball team and working to learn the offense. Lowe said that they were both athletic and tough, and that (he thought) Davis had been recruited by Boston College to play both sports.

The News & Observer makes mention of this also:

NOTE: Lowe wanted to beef up his basketball roster, so football players Jarvis Williams (6-4, 200) and Darrell Davis (6-5, 195) offered to help. The freshman receivers recently joined the Pack after individual tryouts.

“They give us some bodies, some athletes,” Lowe said. “Once they learn the system, they might be able to get in and play a couple of minutes for us.”

Additionally, according to a PP poster listening to Lowe’s show last night, Astur is doubtful for Bama:

Lowe says Engin Atsur won’t be playing against ‘Bama. Coach said Atsur tried in practice yesterday but there were a few things he wasn’t comfortable doing. Therefore, don’t count on Atsur playing tomorrow night.

I hope that the fans will be patient with Ferguson. The kid has not played competitively in almost 2 years. He can, and will be, a valuable addition to a very thin team, but he is not going to be the savior some are already annointing him to be. Nor should he be expected to be the savior.

Some of our fans will bash him on Thursday if he doesn’t go for about 15 points and 5 assists. Give the kid a chance to find his role, and get his feet wet. The last game he played was in high school, and tomorrow he will be going up against a top 10 team.

Atsur is not being rushed, which is a good thing. Playing prematurely, and tweaking it again, could mean the season. January is more important than tomorrow night.

The football players are still learning. Good to see Sid say it is going to take some time for them to learn the system, Some of the fans a couple of weeks ago thought these guys could walk straight off the football field, and be ready to play at UVa the next weekend. Regardless of how great a player you may be, it is not that simple.

Looking forward to the game against Bama. Will be another good test for this team.

Good news about the fball players. Atsur should sit as long as he needs to sit. No use in putting him in early just to have him hurt himself again. After all we will need him healthy for the championship run in March.

    Laddie

There isn’t much room for anyone to criticize ANYTHING right now. I couldn’t believe that some were on GG’s case after his very first game at the point. Now, if TFerg does nothing more than feel his way through two or three ballgames, that’s fine. If he does better than that, we can all count our blessings.

At the very least, Williams and Davis give us the opportunity to run full 5 on 5 practices with decent athletes. I wouldn’t look for them to play anymore than junk time, the opportunities of which will be few and far between this season.

Will we run Power I sets when the football players are in? 🙂

Good Gosh-a-mighty I hope Sid doesn’t call for Bubble Screens and draw plays with the shot clock winding down.

I heard a rumor. Someone said that Sid called a timeout in the last minute of one of our recent games –AND THE PLAY WORKED?

Could this be true? The only success I ever saw prior to this year was when Julius shook his head to that coach and said mentally “Let me handle it” and we won.

It is so nice now. WTNY and the year after. Wow.

Our football players are wanting more than a 3 win season.

“I hope Sid doesn’t call for Bubble Screens and draw plays with the shot clock winding down.”

I think we’ve seen this strategy used on the hardwood already, but in previous years. Say like when we needed three possessions, but the clock was already past that point, yet we still walked the ball across the time line as if we didn’t have a hurried bone in our bodies or a worry in the world.
    But I digress.
