Blogosphere Comments on TOB

From one of the best independent blogs out there – Eagle in Atlanta (Link)

I love StateFans Nation. They supported me early and have guest blogged here in the past. They are now reporting that TOB is the No. 1 candidate for the NC State job. I have not provided any info or rumors to them. And they seem pretty excited about TOB and his potential there. No one over there asked me, but here is my opinion on TOB going to NC State.

From a great blog entry by Tom Suiter at WRAL-TV (Link)

I think State needed to hire someone who had been a head coach and had run his own program. The last two Wolfpack head coaches came from the assistant ranks, and while some assistant coaches have resumes that are appealing — especially those from big time programs — the right move at this time was to hire a proven head coach, and Tom O’Brien is certainly that.

It’s all there for N.C. State to have a winner, it really is. What the program needs without question is a hard-nosed coach who will instill discipline and who knows how to put together a staff. It needs a coach who has won at the highest level and knows what it takes to win now. History shows that Tom O’Brien has done that.

You never know until they hold the press conference, but I’ll say it here — Tom O’Brien to N.C. State would be a winner for the Wolfpack.

    http://www.boston.com/sports/colleges/football/articles/2006/12/08/bc_begins_preparing_for_life_after_obrien/

“Someone wanted him gone,” said Barber, who eight years ago endowed the program’s head football coaching position as a way to send a message that the school was committed to fielding a competitive football program. It was also a way, Barber said, to ensure O’Brien’s salary remained competitive, though it reportedly lagged among the bottom third in comparison to the rest of the ACC’s 11 other coaches.

Wow, apparently there is a power struggle of sorts going on at BC. The more I read about the mess there could be at BC, the more I understand why TOB wanted out so bad.

Partialqualifier, answer my earlier post, or STFU about people not posting the reasons we’re unhappy about TOB. We have hired a coach with a very visible and traceable track record of a ceiling of success that is below what we should be able to expect. The idea is to get past the level of success enjoyed by folks like Sheridan and Chuck in his first seasons, not to merely get back to it. TOB will probably get us to that level, but not beyond. I would have been happy with Paul Johnson because the man has a history of not only winning wherever he goes, but of winning championships, rising to the occasion regardless of the level of the competition. Go ahead and name your objections to him. So we don’t know how PJ would do at the BCS level. We know what he’s done on the levels he’s coached at. We DO know what TOB can do at the BCS level. And it is Herb-esque to the extreme.

Herb: 8-38 against Carolina and Dook.
Tom: 3-15 against VaTech, Miami, and FSU.

    Herb: Zero ACC Titles.
Tom: 1 shared BE title, the year VaTech and Miami left

Herb: 15-36 vs Sagarin Top 30 (Final Five Seasons Only)
Tom: 7-21 vs AP Top 25

Herb: 1 Sweet 16, Zero Final Fours.
Tom: Zero New Year’s Day or second-tier Bowls.

Herb: Last season finished 2-5 with a second place finish and high NCAA seed on the line, including two losses to last place Wake Forest. Finished fourth, with a four game losing streak, seeded 10th in NCAAs.
Tom: Last season finished 1-2 with an Atlantic Division Title and BCS Bowl on the line, including a tenth consecutive loss to 8th place Miami. Finished tied for fourth overall, bid to Meineke Bowl.

The only thing I have said, and I have said it consistently, that the past is prologue. You want to see what someone will do in the future, look at what he’s done in the past. TOB’s record is what it is. My point is very simply that for NC State to begin beating our main rivals consistently, or even half the time, or for NC State to rise to the level of challenging for and actually winning championships with TOB at the helm, HE will have to rise to a level of success HE has heretofore never authored. I hope he can. But those that think this was a fabulous hire have ONLY hope on their side, and boundless optimism. I applaud them. The lessons of the past are on my side of the argument, that admittedly I hope I end up losing.

And while I’m at it, STFU about whether folks are genuine fans or not. I was probably twenty years plus into rooting for the Pack when you were wearing Pampers. People are entitled to question the wisdom of this hire without having their loyalty questioned. It is precisely my loyalty that gives me pause, because I fear we have become too satisfied with a standard below what we can reach.

Hmmm…with great fans, facilities, flagship state university, etc. I wonder why the average joe sportsfan would consider us a bad place to be? Oh yeah, Lee Fowler. Two stud revenue coaches, upgraded facilities, well-oiled fundraising machine…all we need is a upgraded AD and it’s just send your check, go cheer, and sit back and wait for the glory.

  6. for2n8son 12/08/2006 at 12:39 PM #

^ You could have said the same sorts of things about Sidney Lowe.

  7. RedTerror29 12/08/2006 at 12:40 PM #

You cannot project TOB’s success at State much better than PJ’s. Neither had access to the resources we have available here. TOB’s winning percentage was well above BC’s norm. Miami and VT may been BC’s rivals in the old Big East, but they ARE NOT peer football programs.

  8. Dan 12/08/2006 at 12:49 PM #

“Tom: Zero New Year’s Day or second-tier Bowls.”

Bowl selection has WAY more to do with fan base than it has to do with the outcome of the performance. A 6-6 team that will sell tickets will get the better bowl everytime over a 8-4 BC type school.

    Bowl selections are business decisions.

    # 61% Boston College is a better coaching job than NC State.
    # 70% Tom O’Brien made a mistake leaving B.C. for NC State.

    # What is the best available coaching job in college football?

    38% Alabama
    11% Arizona State
    7% NC State
enough said we are a joke in the national spotlight!!! Those tarholes who have never had a program land a national “stud” football coach and the only thing we can get is an old washed up Butch Davis whooping boy, Thanks Fowler!!

  10. SixPack 12/08/2006 at 12:59 PM #

If PJ was annnounced as the new hire at NCSU this same bunch would be howling (if not now…after next season) that the offense stinks because every school at our level has figured out the “antiquated-boring” option offense and we “don’t throw the ball downfield” (heard that before recently?).

Off course Justin Burk will have transfered to another school that runs Pro Style offense and we’ll have no QB’s to throw down field anyway !

You guys need to get a life !!!!! I’ll be at CFS parking lot tailgating !!!!

    GP PACK !!!!

    TO FLAGSHIPUNX#1…

I agree with the other posters…SFN needs to close this out….

I think you guys have a great coach in Roy…worry about his BP sometimes.

Butch Davis will bring you glory…keep watching your back…I would NOT think he will buy a multi-million dollar home there to retire…remember Mac…

We agree on one thing – at least – Baddour was the LUCKIEST AD around…BD has been sniffing out HC jobs for several months and Baddour fired Bunting….as really classless thing to do…he was a loyal UNX Alum whom I respected…

Hope you can get some $$ so that when I come over I can see a REAL jumbotron…

TOB will do just fine here…when you folks get around to “losing” Baddour…I have a ready replacement and he will NOT have major relocation costs…I will personally rent him a U-Haul for the local move.

Now…I know that you are on your lunch break and the Public Library computer is about time-out…

I have two guesses as to what your job is…

Are you that cute little ELF traffic cop in Florida that is handing out tickets?

Or are you the person chained to the tree to keep the evil NCSU Forrester from cutting it?

There is a real reason we sing….GO TO HELL, Carolina…it is folks like you…

    Have a nice day….

    Go Pack

I give up. We’ll have this discussion again in four years when it’s relevant.

“You guys who do not understand the comparisons to HErb are dense. It ain’t about what resources were available to each. that isn’t even part of the comparison! Drop that stawman.”

I cannot believe this guy is for real.
    1) He calls others dense when his post is so full of errors it is almost impossible to read
    2) He has yet to make a single decent point in favor of his argument.
    3) He falls back to the “if you do not agree with me you are stoooopid” argument.

  14. TNCSU 12/08/2006 at 1:17 PM #

    Concur,
Any news of an official press conference??

    This Poll is laughable:

61% Boston College is a better coaching job than NC State.

70% Tom O’Brien made a mistake leaving B.C. for NC State.

What is the best available coaching job in college football?
    44% Miami
    38% Alabama
    11% Arizona State
    7% NC State

I wonder how many DIV-1 coaches answered? I’d BET ZERO!! So, therefore, most don’t know squat. There are more people w/in 2 hours of Boston than in the entire Southeast – that is the simple reason behind this result of a poll from non-coaches who wouldn’t know the first thing about coaching at the D-1 level. Again, if Tom O’Brien can do at State what he’s done at BC, we’ll probably name a building after him. And, he’ll get into the bowls that his teams deserve. Semper FI!

  15. Running Wolf 12/08/2006 at 1:21 PM #

Hey from the what it’s worth department…I am very excited…we have a guy that has proven he can win…he has an established staff and we know he can graduate students…anything less…we are taking a chance…I am 150% behind Tom no different than I was with Amato, O’Cain, Sheridan…all the way back to Lou Holtz. Many things from a record book at another school doesn’t transfer…heck just too many factors but I do know that someone who wins and is nearly 80% on the win side for the last few years and is established can not hurt state in fact the gamble is it just might help us a great deal. Merry Christmas to all the Wolf Pack Nation and here is to a bright 2007 football season! I beg all the TRUE fans regardless of your opinions…to support our school and new coach.

  16. Packenigma 12/08/2006 at 1:23 PM #

Packfanstk, about the best argument you have going for you is that you could be classified as a borderline lunatic. You have the audacity to claim that you are a true Pack fan, yet you are wanting to throw TOB under the damn bus, even before he steps foot onto the practice fields at State. Not only that, your childlike comments to others to “STFU” smacks strongly of an newly pubescent teenager lashing out in a maniacal fashion at the world, after looking in the mirror and discovering your first pimple decided to make you look like you had two noses.

When attempting to draw parallels between Herb and TOB, consider this: it would help they coached the same sport, and had coached under almost indentical cirucumstances at the same institutions at one time or another. In other words, when you compare onions to apples, all you end up with is one foul tasting juice.

If you are a true Pack fan, give TOB a chance. Is that too much to ask?

press conference?—be good to get it done—once coach rod signs with bama—the landscape will start to shift for all again—buy that yankee boy a bus ticket and get him on down here so we can sign hime up—the more i read the more i like

  18. wolfpacker420 12/08/2006 at 1:34 PM #

you must like his record against V. Tech and Miami huh? Pretty outstanding that he beat Miami this year. oh yeah he didn’t

  19. TNCSU 12/08/2006 at 1:42 PM #

Wolfpacker420, did you leave off “minutes” from your logon name? You are either a 20 minute fairweather fan, or are definitely a Tarheel, so admit it, and go back to a Tarhole blog. You evidently may have a been a Wolfpack fan before you flunked out your Freshman year, then transferred to UNX.

Please find me a coach with a winning record against Miami and Va Tech for the last 5 years — I would be interested in seeing them.

  20. wolfpacker420 12/08/2006 at 1:42 PM #

Amato was 49-37 and led the Wolfpack to five bowl games in seven seasons. What has your precious TOB done that makes him so much better than Amato? He sure hasn’t won a major bowl on New Years and his school wanted him out. Kind of reminds you of what State wanted. I hope the best but we deserve better than these two bit goons that we always hire. Sorry but this wasn’t a great decision by Fowler. I want the best not just 8-3 with the 3 losses to Unc, Wake, and FSU!!!!

  21. wolfpacker420 12/08/2006 at 1:45 PM #

We can’t land a top notch coach in any sport. Does that not bother you so called Pack fans? Or, have you guys been drinking Unc media cool-aid and have settled to be mediocre?

  22. TNCSU 12/08/2006 at 1:49 PM #

Last 2 seasons in ACC play – BC 10-6, NCSU 5-11. Questions???

You’re 5 bowls in seven years doesn’t mention 1 in the last 3 since Rivers left. The one year we did get a bowl, we were 7-5. TOB’s worst season in the last 8 years was 7-5. Every other year, he’s had at least 8 wins.

Admit it, you have no argument – It was a good hire – give the man a chance. You’re beating a dead horse, because he’s the MAN now!

  23. Mike 12/08/2006 at 1:50 PM #

statered, in your post at 11:19 – you said – Can’t do it. I don’t have enough info on the entire universe of people that may be available. That’s what we pay LF and the consulting firm for.

Dont you think that’s exactly what we did? Maybe TOB was the best available candidate. We dont know what happened behind the scenes. For you to come here saying we screwed up – did you interview any of your candidates? You can’t even provide a name of a better qualified coach. In the business world, dont complain about a problem – offer a solution. You have been asked and have failed miserably. For you to say you cant name a better possibility, then keep your mouth shut. My ex used to argue about anything for the sake of arguments. If I said 2+2=4, she would argue about it. I expect that from a UNC grad, but not from someone with a name of statered.

We have hired TOB, and if we are wrong, we can look at this again in 3 years. Maybe Cowher will be ready then. Until then give it a rest. And anyone who wants to give up your season tix, I am happy to have them.

  24. wolfpacker420 12/08/2006 at 2:02 PM #

Go ahead and place your order to watch us beat up on losers and lose the rival games that we place so much emphasis on here at State!! If you don’t think what Jimbo Fisher has done at LSU a SEC school is outstanding then you are on the pipe and probably are a TarHole fan b/c you don’t want state to be a powerhouse!! We didn’t even interview Jimbo, what’s the deal with that?

The coaching searches in college football are getting really interesting. We have been discussing the Tom O’Brien situation over at the blog on 850 the Buzz today, and the gang at State Fans Nation covered it as well. With this Tom O’Brie…
