Blogosphere Comments on TOB

From one of the best independent blogs out there – Eagle in Atlanta (Link)

I love StateFans Nation. They supported me early and have guest blogged here in the past. They are now reporting that TOB is the No. 1 candidate for the NC State job. I have not provided any info or rumors to them. And they seem pretty excited about TOB and his potential there. No one over there asked me, but here is my opinion on TOB going to NC State.

From a great blog entry by Tom Suiter at WRAL-TV (Link)

I think State needed to hire someone who had been a head coach and had run his own program. The last two Wolfpack head coaches came from the assistant ranks, and while some assistant coaches have resumes that are appealing — especially those from big time programs — the right move at this time was to hire a proven head coach, and Tom O’Brien is certainly that.

It’s all there for N.C. State to have a winner, it really is. What the program needs without question is a hard-nosed coach who will instill discipline and who knows how to put together a staff. It needs a coach who has won at the highest level and knows what it takes to win now. History shows that Tom O’Brien has done that.

You never know until they hold the press conference, but I’ll say it here — Tom O’Brien to N.C. State would be a winner for the Wolfpack.

“With the talent BC can put on the field and its recruiting base he could never get to a big bowl. ”

I severely disagree with this statement. Three times in the last three years if he just wins one game he goes to a big bowl in all probablility. In each case he had an advantage in the “talent BC can put on the field and its recruiting base.”

Heck maybe you are right but it is most definately the foregone conclusion people like to trot out as a reason for thinking this is a good hire.

I went to bed last night….woke up this morning and I see that some of you are still debating Tom O’Brien. LOL! Bad news for Statered & TOB=Herb…..the search is over! Get over it! What you are now doing is the intellectual equivalent of arguing with a stop sign! Tom O’Brien is the next coach….Period!

If that bothers you to the point of excessive rambling for 48 hours straight, may I suggest another option for you? ECU is only 70 miles to the east, UNC & Duke are practically next door, APP St. isnt all that far away, hell…maybe even take atrip to see Paul Johnson coach at Navy. The fans here are ready to move on.

I stated this earlier yesterday, and I will rehash for those of you who are still beating on Tom O’Brien. Do me a favor….put your money where your mouth is. Name the reasons you dont think TOB will be an excellent football coach at NC State. Then name for me the coach you would have hired instead. I will guarantee you that I can name twice as many reasons not to hire your guy as you can list not to hire O’Brien! Try me.

    Hould have read:
“Heck maybe you are right but it is most NOT definately the foregone conclusion people like to trot out as a reason for thinking this is a good hire.”

And gopack I’m not saying you agree that its a foregone conclusion.

  4. TOB=Herb 12/08/2006 at 11:10 AM #

was Tom Reed a good hire?

  5. justaguy 12/08/2006 at 11:10 AM #

As I see it, TOB’s recruiting has had an average rating in the mid 40s nationally, yet his teams have finished with rankings in the mid 20s on a regular basis. Some johnny one-note posters repeat TOB record against top 25 teams, but based on the talent TOB has to work with, he is an overachieving coach. He teams win the games they should, and then some, but have had trouble competing against teams with top 20 recruiting. Give the man better talent and you will get better results. Of course getting better talent is TOB’s task as well, and I suspect how well he does at State depends upon how well he recruits, because he will make outstanding use of the talent available.

BC has had and probably still have a better football program and tradition then we’ll ever have. I don’t know why you think we can give that loser TOB a better chance in NC than he has in BC? Fowler should of went a different direction than another mediocre coach!

  7. partialqualifier 12/08/2006 at 11:19 AM #

I see some more bitching, but no one is taking me up on the challenge.

  8. statered 12/08/2006 at 11:19 AM #

“Name the reasons you dont think TOB will be an excellent football coach at NC State. ”

Done so. Repeatedly. You refuse to address it.

“Then name for me the coach you would have hired instead.”

Can’t do it. I don’t have enough info on the entire universe of people that may be available. That’s what we pay LF and the consulting firm for.

    ^420,
Drive to Raleigh. Go to Carter Finley. Look around. Then walk around downtown Raleigh and ask folks about Wolfpack football and see what they say.
Then drive to Boston. Go to BC’s field. Look around. Then walk around downtown Boston and ask folks about BC football and see what they say.
And for good measure…drive to Charlotte. Go to the Meineke Car Care Bowl. Count BC fans in attendance (be forewarned…you may need to take off your shoes).

    So in other words…..

Statered has no idea who the available candidates were or what their strengths and weaknesses were, yet you are an expert on Tom O’Brien. Hmm.

I am going to venture a guess that Statered would be against ANY coach we hired.

  11. statered 12/08/2006 at 11:37 AM #

I know what was reported in the press about the available candidates. I am sure there are a lot of lower level type guys that I have never heard of that might be viable.

Beleive what ever the hell makes you feel better. I supported Herb WAY past the point anyone associated with this website did. I supported Chuck way past most other apparently did as well.

I started following BC closely while living in Philly and had some BC alum friends. Wake played BC and being a State fan/acc guy it was a topic of conversation. I have watched a lot of their games as a result. That’s why I am real familiar with TOB.

  12. justaguy 12/08/2006 at 11:44 AM #

“I am going to venture a guess that Statered would be against ANY coach we hired.”

True. Hiring a coach takes all the fun out of hoping for the god-like, no-flaws coach that statered, and others, would like. To remain in a perpetual state of hope over a football coach is to live in a fantasy world. But the reality is, a coach has to be hired, and State has done than. I suspect it’s not that the new reality is bad, but that the fantasy is over that have some upset. Dreaming about a national chanpionship doesn’t take long. If you still want to hope, hope for a cure for cancer.

justaguy…. right on! i should go and get yourself and job at the n&o or the greensboro paper.

  14. FlagshipUNC#1 12/08/2006 at 11:53 AM #

I read the Greensboro News and record today and there is an article bashing NC State for going after another ACC schools coach. To me, it seems that if he wanted to come, so be it. Personally, I think you guys should have done better. TOB like it or not had a lot better chance of recruiting at Boston than he will have at NCST. I know you guys wanted to hire a big name to match Butch Davis, guess what you didn’t. You hired an average coach. I read your blogs, like everyone else in the country and wonder why everything you guys do is based on UNC. You guys will never admit but you are always going to be running second to UNC the flagship state school….

  15. partialqualifier 12/08/2006 at 11:55 AM #

I am not dure how anyone familiar with Coach O’Brien could be spewing the crap that you are. It is BEYOND ABSURD to rabidly criticize any coach who has a .700 winning percentage, and has 9 wins 4 of the last 5 years, and has averaged 8.5 wins per year over the last 8 seasons, and has won 6 straight bowl games!!!! Not to mention that he is the winningest coach in the history of Boston College….which has had a helluva lot more success than NC State!!

Maybe you dont like the guys personality….and that’s OK. But to disguise your dislike of a guys personality with ASANINE catcalls about his coaching ability is silly. The only facts are his won/loss record. I dont know how ANYONE can dispute that.

And to say he hasnt won big games is crazy. When you are 3-9…you aint playing in big games….much less winning them. I HATE when people bitch about a guy that is 9-0 then loses game 10….all of a sudden he cant win the big game! Well…what the hell were the other 9 games? Amato beat FSU all the time, but we still never even sniffed the ACC Championship. Dick Sheridan NEVER won a BIG GAME! NEVER! Every year we lost to Clemson…and if Ga Tech was on the road you could forget it!

Would you not be happy with 80 wins in 10 years at NC State? Wake up! We are 6 games over .500 in 100 years of playing football. If O’Brien goes 80-40 at NC State he’ll get a damn building named after him!!!

  16. quypack93 12/08/2006 at 11:59 AM #

with TOB, the floor is around sheridan and the ceilling is above amato’s best year. did anyone see any of BC’s home games? they were contending for the ACC title all season and the stadium was always 75% full. still, he took them 8-9 wins on a regular basis. there is no evidence that TOB can’t do better at state than what he has done a BC. great hire.

miami aimed high and shot blanks. that is where college football is coming to. coaches are turning down the likes of miami’s and opt for wake, state, and unc. life is good.

I think this an interesting link regarding the national perception of NC State football. Certainly, I dont agree with it, but this is how the majority of people who care enough to vote see it.

I dont know. Maybe we need a better PR machine. Maybe we just need to win on a consistent basis for 5 years +.

But no doubt this doesnt affect things like recruiting.

  21. quypack93 12/08/2006 at 12:12 PM #

‘nother words, state had choices (all were good), and the likes of miami has to settle. state fans (not all though), stop whinnig and get excited. if you want to give your season tix, i will buy from you.
