Blogosphere Comments on TOB

From one of the best independent blogs out there – Eagle in Atlanta (Link)

I love StateFans Nation. They supported me early and have guest blogged here in the past. They are now reporting that TOB is the No. 1 candidate for the NC State job. I have not provided any info or rumors to them. And they seem pretty excited about TOB and his potential there. No one over there asked me, but here is my opinion on TOB going to NC State.

From a great blog entry by Tom Suiter at WRAL-TV (Link)

I think State needed to hire someone who had been a head coach and had run his own program. The last two Wolfpack head coaches came from the assistant ranks, and while some assistant coaches have resumes that are appealing — especially those from big time programs — the right move at this time was to hire a proven head coach, and Tom O’Brien is certainly that.

It’s all there for N.C. State to have a winner, it really is. What the program needs without question is a hard-nosed coach who will instill discipline and who knows how to put together a staff. It needs a coach who has won at the highest level and knows what it takes to win now. History shows that Tom O’Brien has done that.

You never know until they hold the press conference, but I’ll say it here — Tom O’Brien to N.C. State would be a winner for the Wolfpack.

When we played BC this year the commentators kept going on and on about the big offensive line talent prevalent in the north east and BC typically recruits and has strong o-lines… if this is true, maybe he can bring some o-line talent with him. Anyone have thoughts on this?

  2. packpigskinfan23 12/07/2006 at 5:55 PM #

I really think the O-Line will be our biggest improvement…. and I hope it to be immediate. its the thing we most desperately need.

    Amen and Amen.

*That loss, IMHO, lit a fire under a certain young NCSU QB, and started something that turned out to be incredible!*

Uhm, hate to nitpick, but Rivers wasn’t around for the 77-17 game. That was ’95. The game in 2000 you are referring to was 58-14. Not much difference, but hey, might as well set the record straight.

The O’Brien hire is like the day you showed up at school and found out the homecoming queen was going to the prom with… “that guy!!?” Its just weird, seemed to come completely out of left field. I hope it works out.

I can’t say I’m overly excited about the hire, but I also have no doubts that TOB can take us to the “next level”.

Of course, the thing that I realize is that the “next level” for NC State would be to become a consistent Top 25 Program. Talk of championships is great & we absolutely need to maintain that vision. But the reality is we are roughly a .500 program over the modern era, the last 25 years, the last 10 years, or the last 5 years.

TOB’s current program, which has far more disadvantages than NC State, has achieved more in 10 years than any decade of Pack Football you choose to look at. He’s 27-9 over the last 3 seasons (and counting). The best 3yr stretch in NC State history was 26-8-2 during Lou Holtz’ tenure.

Let that sink in for awhile….

um, I just heard that Nick Saban turned down 50 MILLION dollars over 10 years to coach Alabama with a 7 MILLION signing bonus… this from WTVD11 news… unbelievable, wow

  9. packpigskinfan23 12/07/2006 at 6:29 PM #

    ouch…

  10. Wolfman300 12/07/2006 at 6:39 PM #

This is off topic but – ESPNU is showing JJ Hickson’s high school team playing.

  11. RedTerror29 12/07/2006 at 6:40 PM #

^^Not true. Alabama state law – no state employees (which is what Saban is) can have contracts over 7 years.

Now if Bama boosters convinced the Alabama state legislature to convene in the middle of the night to change the law specifically so they can give Saban what he wants…I never want to hear another word about how much weight UNX throws around this state…

Notice our “honorable mention” & hoping that we’ve now seen the end of this crap:

Don’t know if this has been posted but BC was #1 in the ACC in passing offense @ 241ypg.
So much for the Herb O’Brian.

  14. RedTerror29 12/07/2006 at 6:43 PM #

^^^Correction: Saban would be a state employee if Bama hired him, not is a state employee.

They did, however, apparantly offer Rodriguez from WVU double his current salary to coach in Bear Bryant’s shadow.

  16. packpigskinfan23 12/07/2006 at 6:44 PM #

thats 2 honorable mentions and the dreaded 5spot for us once this year….

I really thought we were gonna get it after the Carolina loss…. oh well, at least we didnt.

I really like the fsU combo in the 5 spot.

  17. RedTerror29 12/07/2006 at 6:55 PM #

Rodriguez to Bama is being reported – http://journorock.blogspot.com/

I can hold out hope now that PJ winds up at WVU (maybe Fisher to BC if he’s that desparate for a job?).

  18. GoldenChain 12/07/2006 at 7:12 PM #

2nd in the ACC in scoring offense 26.1ppg
2nd in the ACC in total offense 359ypg
    7 games 24 or + points and 5 30+

I’m still waiting for someone to justify the ‘Herb’ analogy to me.

Although I went on record as one of the loonies that wanted Steve Logan, I am happy State got a HC with some experience and a track record of winning. IMHO, TOB will do a fine job recruiting, and hopefully he can salvage some of the recruits who were thinking of NCSU before CTC was terminated. What he can do on the field with the great talent he’ll have ready to play, that remains to be seen. BTW, any scuttlebutt on who he might tag as OC or DC?? Will Portee be retained?? If anybody has heard anything, please don’t make me or the other members of the lunatic fringe sweat it!!!

Hey choppack1, I’ll admit that going to a site the is named “FireX” will not give you objective opinions. But the fact that the site was even created says a lot. I hope I am wrong, but the numbers do not lie.

  21. WolfPup35 12/07/2006 at 7:49 PM #

All I can say about that website’s comments is…ummmm SO?

  22. packpigskinfan23 12/07/2006 at 7:51 PM #

there are counter arguments against every single one of those “stats” the website puts up…

and these days there is a firemyteamscoach.com for every damn school.

  23. WolfPup35 12/07/2006 at 7:52 PM #

Those numbers were made at a school in an area where college sports is admittedly next to nothing. Here in the old north state, we CARE about our college sports, and the recruits know that. TOB will get his hands on much better athletes here than he would have EVER gotten at BC. Lets see what he can do with some actual football players and a fan base that will be behind him.

more proof…. even if not all that substantial
