Blogosphere Comments on TOB

From one of the best independent blogs out there – Eagle in Atlanta (Link)

I love StateFans Nation. They supported me early and have guest blogged here in the past. They are now reporting that TOB is the No. 1 candidate for the NC State job. I have not provided any info or rumors to them. And they seem pretty excited about TOB and his potential there. No one over there asked me, but here is my opinion on TOB going to NC State.

From a great blog entry by Tom Suiter at WRAL-TV (Link)

I think State needed to hire someone who had been a head coach and had run his own program. The last two Wolfpack head coaches came from the assistant ranks, and while some assistant coaches have resumes that are appealing — especially those from big time programs — the right move at this time was to hire a proven head coach, and Tom O’Brien is certainly that.

It’s all there for N.C. State to have a winner, it really is. What the program needs without question is a hard-nosed coach who will instill discipline and who knows how to put together a staff. It needs a coach who has won at the highest level and knows what it takes to win now. History shows that Tom O’Brien has done that.

You never know until they hold the press conference, but I’ll say it here — Tom O’Brien to N.C. State would be a winner for the Wolfpack.

Heard something interesting on 850 am this morning. Apparently BC football is so far from the mainstream media in Boston that when opening day of the football season kicked off at a press conference no one from the Globe even bothered showing up.

O’Brien has lobbied for every opening. coincidence? No

  3. JoeDog 12/07/2006 at 3:29 PM #

I haven’t seen any new info on WRAL’s website in the TOB article since 6am this morning. Has anyone heard anything since then that would add confidence that he is coming to NC State? Also, has anyone heard anything about NC State announcing a press conference?

That’s the way it is in most large cities, with 4 major sports teams. The college programs will play second fiddle to the sports teams. The colleges don’t dominate the area like they do around here.

doubt a press conference will be set until the board of trustees has their teleconference tomorrow to approve the contract. could still be as early as saturday though

The lead sports story for today’s Boston Herald was that Larry Bird turns 50, not that the winningest coach in BC history was leaving.

9 wins a year is mediocre?

  11. TOB=Herb 12/07/2006 at 3:37 PM #

97 is also the year FSU beat Miami like a drum

  12. WolfPup35 12/07/2006 at 3:41 PM #

Wolfpacker420…..I’ll GLADLY take those tickets and passes off your hands!!! You see, I am a REAL fan, a TRUE Wolfpacker..the kind of fan that sat in the cold rain until a 77-17 drubbing by FSU in 2000 was OVER (0:00 on the clock). If you have that kind of attitude towards our program…maybe you should consider changing your colors….to whining baby blue. Go smoke another one and leave us alone!!

“I will not put money into season tickets for this goon. Welcome back Herb!! Thats what we get with o’brien a herb like coach who hasn’t won a thing period.”

Wolfpack420: you are an idiot, and i really have a hard time believing you posess the expendable income to purchase season tickets for any sports team.

    From ESPN:

Tom O’Brien will not need to worry about adjusting to the competition of a new conference as he moves from Boston College to N.C. State. O’Brien has switched from one ACC school to another, which may seem like a bad move considering the success Boston College has had and the struggles N.C. State has recently suffered.

In the end though, this looks a good move for O’Brien and a great move for the Wolfpack. They get a proven winner, and O’Brien can recruit a more fertile area. His recruiting base goes from the Northeast to the South, and that is a big difference. The amount of immediate talent now available to him far exceeds what he had at Boston College.

Many thought that by entering the ACC, the Eagles would improve their ability to recruit in the South. The truth is that regardless of what conference they are in, it can be a tough sell to get recruits to leave a certain style of life in the South for the cold and hustle and bustle of a place like Boston.

At N.C. State, that is no longer a concern for him. He will be recruiting a deeper pool of talent right out of his own backyard. In addition, college football is looked upon differently at a place like N.C. State than it is at a Boston College. Boston is a professional sports town, and despite the Eagles success, they often take a back seat to the Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics and Bruins. At N.C. State, O’Brien will be able to sell a bit more of a football atmosphere to recruits, and that should help him.

Also, he is not facing the same stringent admission standards. Boston College can be a tough place to get student-athletes admitted, and that limited who he recruited. At N.C. State, he will not be facing the same level of admission standards and will be able to broaden the scope of players he can recruit.

The opportunity to win is there for O’Brien, and his style may be what the Wolfpack needs to get on track. N.C. State has been very inconsistent, looking good one week and then like a totally different team the next. O’Brien’s no-nonsense, disciplinary style could help to quickly right the ship.

He did a nice job of recruiting at Boston College and proved himself to be a very good teacher who got the most out of players. If he can do that with his new program, he should be able to quickly get N.C. State back into the thick of things in the ACC.

Now he’ll have to see if the verbal commitments stick from some top prospects stick, guys like wide receiver Jay Smith (Norfolk, Va./Lake Taylor), defensive end Linwan Euwell (Pinetops, N.C./Southwest Edgecombe) and tight end George Bryan (Wilmington, N.C./New Hanover). He needs to evaluate and decide who will fit his program best and keep those players on board. It is not too late to still make up ground for this 2007 class and generate interest in N.C. State from uncommitted prospects.

If he can reestablish interest in the school from top prospects like Tydreke Powell (Ahoskie, N.C./Hertford County) and Adewale Ojomo (Hialeah, Fla.), he has a chance to pull in a solid class in a short amount of time.

O’Brien will face tough competition from nearby schools. North Carolina has out-recruited the Wolfpack recently, and that is not going to be any easier to change with Butch Davis at the helm now. Also, Steve Spurrier has really elevated South Carolina as a recruiting presence, and Clemson is never easy to battle with over prospects.

O’Brien has a good chance for success at his new school if he can identify and coach up talent like he did at Boston College.

Boston College is left in a tough spot here as not only did they lose their coach, but they lost him to a rival conference school and now will face him regularly. O’Brien is not leaving the cupboard bare, but the Eagles will need to quickly replace him with someone who can overcome the hurdles of recruiting to a school like Boston College.

Once again, Hear Hear!!! I am completely disgusted by the attitudes of so called fans, you either win every game you play, or you suck, etc…

Herb may have been a boring coach, but he DID take the BB team to 5 straight NCAA’s after the ‘Pack had been in the basement of the ACC for a decade or more!!

Who’s to say HOW TOB will do here!! Wait and see, stay home on saturdays during the season and work on your knitting (knit 1 pearl 2), or perhaps you need to practice your self gratification (since you ARE a jerk off, you should at least live up to the title). Sorry about the graphic references, but they seem to be well deserved.

What is the most inportant thing here? Do we want NC State football to take the next step (clearly, not everybody on this board does) or is it more important to validate our own personal opinion (ego)? Bashing TOB at this point is counterproductive. Bashing Chuck is ungentlemanly. Nobody becomes a champion by being negative.

“You see, I am a REAL fan, a TRUE Wolfpacker..the kind of fan that sat in the cold rain until a 77-17 drubbing by FSU in 2000 was OVER (0:00 on the clock). ”

That sounds less like fandom and more like masochism to me. Even the players, one could tell, wanted that disaster to be over with.

That said, some of the posts on here are unbelievable. He is a new coach with a good record. If you don’t so much as give him a chance, I indeed find your fan status somewhat suspect – and your gentlemanly status even more so.

    Cardiff:

Maybe we should back Barnett. “Dirty, rotten, low down thing to do. Like stealing your friend’s girlfriend.”

See if we can get the ACC and other schools riled up. When they come down on us the BOT can say, “You’re right. We agree, we never should have done that. We are sorry and we’re going to fix it. We are going to fire the dumb ass that hired him.

Thank you for the new coaches LF. Bye, bye.

I have to say this- I talked to a BC fan at work last night- and he wasn’t too happy about TOB leaving. He sorta thought 9-10 wins and falling just short was BC’s limit. I think I asked him then what Wake’s limit was. I don’t think it’s any harder in Boston then it is in Winston-Salem.

Seriously, you never know with a proven coach what the ceiling is. You do know what the floor is, and his floor is at the level I expect NCSU football to be (8-4, decent bowl). At worst, I think he’s another step in the right direction. At best, who knows? I wish Amato would stay, but I can’t see that happening. I do think we need to give both guys our appreciation though- Check for what he did to get us on the map, and TOB for what he’ll do to realize the potential CTC brought the program.

I seriously doubt anyone who sat in the stands through the last three years is giving their tickets back now.

  24. choppack1 12/07/2006 at 4:24 PM #

Trout – thanks for the link to that article. Good stuff – like I said, he’s exacty what we need. Hopefully, we’re exactly what he needs – Win, win.

  25. wolfpacker420 12/07/2006 at 4:27 PM #

However we just hired a coach that couldn’t win against the one we fired!! Plus, have you seen your precious O’Brien’s record against top 25 teams? Looks kinda of like Herbs record against Unc,Wake, and Duke for 10 years. Do we call that productive? You so called fans want the world in basketball but don’t think we stand a chance in football. What gives?
