Blogosphere Comments on TOB

From one of the best independent blogs out there – Eagle in Atlanta (Link)

I love StateFans Nation. They supported me early and have guest blogged here in the past. They are now reporting that TOB is the No. 1 candidate for the NC State job. I have not provided any info or rumors to them. And they seem pretty excited about TOB and his potential there. No one over there asked me, but here is my opinion on TOB going to NC State.

From a great blog entry by Tom Suiter at WRAL-TV (Link)

I think State needed to hire someone who had been a head coach and had run his own program. The last two Wolfpack head coaches came from the assistant ranks, and while some assistant coaches have resumes that are appealing — especially those from big time programs — the right move at this time was to hire a proven head coach, and Tom O’Brien is certainly that.

It’s all there for N.C. State to have a winner, it really is. What the program needs without question is a hard-nosed coach who will instill discipline and who knows how to put together a staff. It needs a coach who has won at the highest level and knows what it takes to win now. History shows that Tom O’Brien has done that.

You never know until they hold the press conference, but I’ll say it here — Tom O’Brien to N.C. State would be a winner for the Wolfpack.

“So do you think we’ll hear announcers talking about what terrible fans BC has and how their expectations are a little too high? Yea, me neither.”

Maybe because their AD is not out actively bashing the BC fans like our intrepid leader.

“Also – I hope to see a StateFansNation take on todays column in the N&O by Barnett. Personally, I think he is “offsides” and should rethink the logic behind his argument.”

Would you? Possible. Possible. Would you like mild constructive criticism or would you like to see Ned beaten into a whole new shape, like a white trash wife in a Stephen King novel? Please advise.

*TOB is currently 0-6 against Butch Davis.*

To be fair, TOB is 0-6 vs Butch with Miami players, when Miami was a top 10 program. Miami beat lots of teams those 6 years.

The saying goes, win the games you’re supposed to, and some of the ones you’re not supposed to. Amato did the not supposed to part, but then lost to teams we should have beaten.

If TOB wins when we are expected to, and we play well (hard, smart, not flat) in tough games…and win some of them, then this is a great hire.

What matters now is that if we agree or not with the hire we have a new head coach and he deserves a fair chance to succeed. As far as CTC wecan talk about the problems on the field (penalties, bad decisions, etc) but never bash him for what he has done for the football program. He bled red and white and does not deserve to be tossed aside. I have no problem with him continuing in some capacity at NC State. Heck…I would even prefer him in Fowler’s chair! Let’s see what happens next with O’B. By the way for those who have ESPNU tonight at 6:30 Columbia(GA) vs. Wheeler(GA). JJ Hickson plays for Wheeler and as of today is ranked as the #2 center prospect by Scouts INC! Just in case anyone is interested!

There must be a reason why BC isn’t upset with O’Booring, I mean O’Brien leaving!! He is just an ok coach, I mean we beat them this year and State sucked I rest my case. I will not put money into season tickets for this goon. Welcome back Herb!! Thats what we get with o’brien a herb like coach who hasn’t won a thing period.

  6. wolfpacker420 12/07/2006 at 2:21 PM #

Butch Davis owns O’Brien in head to head match ups! Thanks Fowler we can still look forward to the Tarheels using us as their whooping boy for the next 10years!!

^WRONG! TOB has had neither the facilities nor the fanbase to win larger – no draw for top recruits. Herb had all of that and still couldn’t win big ones.

I’ll support the hire, but I’d rather have Jimbo.

  8. skywalkerdt 12/07/2006 at 2:44 PM #

wolfpacker420, the playing field is a lot more even for O’brien against Davis now with them at NCSU and UNC respectively and actually for facilities and football support actually tipping in O’brien’s favor. Wait to see what they do from these spots before making that judgment. Do you think Spurrier could beat Bill Walsh in the NFL based on collegiate records? Its a whole different deal now

  9. highonlowe 12/07/2006 at 2:55 PM #

Cardiff, as much as I’d love to say release the hounds, I’d say offer mild criticism. Our fanbase’s ‘bitch’ quota has been used up today

I hope it works out but I have good friends who are BC fans and they aren’t the least bit sorry this is happening and that should give us pause.

This is why one should proof-read: N.C. State may fire B.C. coach O’Brien

I really hope that our new coach does not read blogs.

But just in case he does – Welcome Tom O’Brien! Grab you some sweet tea, a plate of ‘Que, a little pile of hushpuppies, and enjoy the Southern sun… Oh, and win us some darned football games – particularly against those Chapel Hill idiots.

You can’t miss us – We’re the “lunatic fringe.” We can be found in the stands at Carter-Finley, yelling our heads off!

    Welcome!

  14. ktpritch 12/07/2006 at 3:03 PM #

Soory – my cut and paste is leaving off some character. Basically, the Yahoo News headline says that NC State may FIRE O’Brien. It’s a typo…

  15. choppack1 12/07/2006 at 3:10 PM #

The man deserves our support. He’s earned it – and from me, he’ll have it. Even though he wasn’t my first choice, he has a solid record, does things the right way and it’s certainly not his fault that he was hired.

The beginning may be a little rough, but I’m eager to see what we put on the field next year.

  16. WolfPup35 12/07/2006 at 3:12 PM #

Hey, can anyone tell me WTF is up with Barnette?!?!? First he’s 100% behind Amato (Don’t chuck Chuck), then he turns around and throws out the insulting article in today’s N&O (Pack offsides with BC). Who cares if a coach goes from one league school to another, it’s not like it hasn’t happened before, and it’s not a slight by NCSU toward BC!! I understand he’s a media guy, and he can write what he thinks, but why paint us in a bad light because TOB went where the money is?? Now we can expect a lot of bad press again, but this time because we are apparently a classless program that will do whatever to whoever to get what we want. GIVE ME A FREAKING BREAK!! Wonder what Fowlup will have to say now.

  17. Clarksa 12/07/2006 at 3:13 PM #

“or would you like to see Ned beaten into a whole new shape, like a white trash wife in a Stephen King novel?”

Ehh…no one likes us anyway, so fire away!

  18. Frank 12/07/2006 at 3:15 PM #

TOB is what NCSU needs right now. The combination of good conservative coach who graduates most of his players will give us more stability and respect nationwide. That will help recruiting and fundraising. This was a good hire.

  19. skywalkerdt 12/07/2006 at 3:16 PM #

hiring o’brien expect the criticism for poaching league coaches, it comes with the territory, doesn’t matter if he wanted out of bc and they wanted him out.

just move on, understand that o’brien apparently went after ncsu not ncsu after o’brien and enjoy the man coaching a VERY talented team next season.

  20. skywalkerdt 12/07/2006 at 3:18 PM #

nobody bother fussing about boring football. what do you prefer boring wins or exciting losses?

  21. Gene 12/07/2006 at 3:18 PM #

Read this on another forum, but it bears repeating. TOB is 9-20 against top 25 teams. He lost his first 13 games against the Top 25. He is 9-16 against the top 25, in his last 5 seasons. He went 3-1 against the Top 25 last year, with home wins against Clemson, Va. Tech and Maryland. He’s beaten #4 ranked Notre Dame, in South Bend in 2002.

He seems to be winning against the Top 25 more than he’s losing, lately.

I’d like all you whiners and complainers to hurry and give your tickets and parking passes back to the WPC so I can upgrade !!!!

    Thanks !!! GO PACK !!!

“TOB is currently 0-6 against Butch Davis.”

TOB is 0-4 against Butch Davis. And the playing field needs to examined in the 4 years TOB and Butch Davis were in the Big East together (97-2000). TOB came to BC in 1997, taking over after the Henning scandal, and BC was coming off 4-8 and 5-7 seasons. Meanwhile, 1997 was Butch Davis’ 3rd year with Miami. His program was established. He did rebuild Miami after the scholarship penalties, but still he was in year 3 of his program. Here are the head to head matchups:

    97: Miami 45, BC 44 (@BC)
    98: Miami 35, BC 17 (@Miami)
    99: Miami 31, BC 28 (@BC)
    00: Miami 52, BC 6 (@Miami)

Obviously, 2000 was a woodshed game. That was year 4 of TOB’s program, year 6 of BD’s program.

  24. yannes 12/07/2006 at 3:20 PM #

TOB isn’t even officially our coach yet and already people are dubbing him “the next Sendek”. This is just baffling.

  25. CarnifeX 12/07/2006 at 3:21 PM #

So, I don’t mind the “hire” I think if he can do here whats been done at BC, consistent 9 win seasons, he’ll be a successful coach.

However I’m curious about the “Gentleman’s Agreement” that I heard so much about in the BB search? Are we gonna catch a bunch of flack for poaching a coach from another ACC school? Or did anything relating Gentlemen and ACC go out the window once we let Miami into the conference?
