Blogosphere Comments on TOB

From one of the best independent blogs out there – Eagle in Atlanta (Link)

I love StateFans Nation. They supported me early and have guest blogged here in the past. They are now reporting that TOB is the No. 1 candidate for the NC State job. I have not provided any info or rumors to them. And they seem pretty excited about TOB and his potential there. No one over there asked me, but here is my opinion on TOB going to NC State.

From a great blog entry by Tom Suiter at WRAL-TV (Link)

I think State needed to hire someone who had been a head coach and had run his own program. The last two Wolfpack head coaches came from the assistant ranks, and while some assistant coaches have resumes that are appealing — especially those from big time programs — the right move at this time was to hire a proven head coach, and Tom O’Brien is certainly that.

It’s all there for N.C. State to have a winner, it really is. What the program needs without question is a hard-nosed coach who will instill discipline and who knows how to put together a staff. It needs a coach who has won at the highest level and knows what it takes to win now. History shows that Tom O’Brien has done that.

You never know until they hold the press conference, but I’ll say it here — Tom O’Brien to N.C. State would be a winner for the Wolfpack.

Good Lord…I love passion but to give up before Tom has even gotten a contract signed is crazy. I would have loved getting Bill Cowher and someday we might but based on the number of openings and the available talent I think this is a FANTASTIC hire and the word “mediocre” is not only not fair but really is negative…I’m going to give this marine a chance to prove himself. Think about it…look at what Lou Holtz did at ND and then look what he did at USC…you can not compare. Heck I bet Bobby Bowden would not be as good at BC as he has been at FSU. Heck, if you told me last year or at the start of this year that NC State would finish 3-9 and fire Amato, WFU would be ACC champs and play in the Orange Bowl I would have thought the world was going to an end…but guess what it did happen and we all lived. Go Pack!

  2. wolfpacker420 12/08/2006 at 2:07 PM #

You are making my point even easier, if Wake can win the ACC title and BC blow their chances with this awesome coach what will he do here?

  3. PackBacker001 12/08/2006 at 2:09 PM #

“We can’t land a top notch coach in any sport. Does that not bother you so called Pack fans? Or, have you guys been drinking Unc media cool-aid and have settled to be mediocre?”

First, I don’t trust the opinion of anyone with 420 in their handle. We get it, you like to smoke pot…that, or you celebrate Hitler’s death date with unabashed glee. Either way, it’s not a testament to your intelligence or frame of mind.

Secondly, these “top-notch” coaches that you speak of made a name for themselves at football powerhouses. In many cases, they built the powerhouse during their rise to being considered a “top-notch” coach. Don’t you see that you are belittling NC State with your opinion? Is our school not capable of building a great program with a coach who is not now considered to be “top-notch?” Unless you can see the future, there’s no basis for your statements.

Lastly, TOB hasn’t coached a single game yet and you are saying we are settling for mediocre by hiring him. Grow up, you can’t make that statement yet. Give it a few years. Out of curiosity, what coaches that you consider “top-notch” are even available?

And can we please close this thread? I’m tiring of people abusing the transitive property by applying records at other schools to their possible record here. TOB is our coach, give him a shot before you turn your back on him.

  4. statered 12/08/2006 at 2:15 PM #

Mike – you are right, if we made the wrong hire we could revisit in three years or so. I will support TOB in the stands as I have for every coach we have had.

packfanstk put it much better than I:
“TOB’s record is what it is. My point is very simply that for NC State to begin beating our main rivals consistently, or even half the time, or for NC State to rise to the level of challenging for and actually winning championships with TOB at the helm, HE will have to rise to a level of success HE has heretofore never authored.”

I really don’t know about all the other coaches out there. I just think I know about TOB given my experience following BC and discussing it with BC Alums. My criteria for selecting a coach would be to assemble a list of guys who have not shown a propensity to “blow it” when the big moment arrives. Historically for us that means getting an assistant or a 1-AA head coach. Sorry I don’t carry around a list of such candidates. Most BCS guys that fit this bill are at programs bigger than ours OR are going to be candidates for programs bigger than ours and hold out for those jobs.

That said maybe TOB can reverse form and come through in the clutch. I certainly hope so and if he does you will hear me cheering louder than anyone.

^^Please find me a coach with a winning record against Miami and Va Tech for the last 5 years — I would be interested in seeing them.

Jimbo Fisher has NEVER been a HC – granted, he was an OC for an LSU team that won a Nat’l Championship – if you want the HC, he (Saban) just turned down 50 million for a job 31% of idiots thought was better than ours. What was Saban’s record against VT and Miami??

Still waiting Wolfpacker420minutes…..Don’t go to a gunfight with a BB gun!

I would concur with closing this thread. The argument against TOB is getting old and stale.

Tom O’Brien all-time against the AP Top 25:7 wins 21 losses
Tom O’Brien all-time against teams that finished the season in the AP Top25:
    4 wins 22 losses
Tom O’Brien all-time against Miami, Virginia Tech, and Florida State:3 win 15 losses
TOB All-Time Conference Titles (9 years at BC):0
I’m sorry I was wrong he is the best fit for state and I hope he can continue this kind of winning here in Raleigh!!! Good Luck Pack!! We are going to need a lot of it!!

  7. wolfpacker420 12/08/2006 at 2:24 PM #

I’m sorry I didn’t know that we HAD to hire a head coach and couldn’t interview asst. coaches, my bad!!! You are the almighty NCSU knowledge I’ll never step to you again!!

  8. Woof Wolf 12/08/2006 at 2:24 PM #

A coaches won-lost record and who he has lost to and beaten are important factors to consider. But to make a hiring decision and/or attempt to predict how he will do here, under entirely different circumstances, is totally nonsensical.

We once hired a coach with a 13-20 overall record. He was 0-3 against VPI & WVU and 0-2 against UVA. His signature wins were the Citadel, ECU, VMI, and Richmond. His name was Lou Holtz.

  9. Running Wolf 12/08/2006 at 2:24 PM #

WFU has done this how many times?? FSU, VT & Miami have done this how many times… My point is that how many years have FSU, VT and Miami had the year they had this year ALL in the same year. WFU might be good and they have improved but how many folks think that WFU will have another year like this one and end up at 9-3 or better for the next 5+ years? I think if you are going to compare you need to have level comparisons and I don’t see any…I think Tom will do better than any coach we have had in the past…but that is my opinion no different than anyone else on this blog but the big difference is that most of the folks on this blog are positive and will give him a chance…anything less is a waste of spirit. 🙂

Tom O’Brien has been a loyal OC at Virginia and learned under a good coach and he has done a great job at BC 8 out of 10 years with the only two years coming at the beginning and learning how to be a Head Coach while doing on the job training…I do not want to see this same learning on the job with Jimbo or Norm Chow and is the main reason Amato had his issues…just becasue you are a Great OC or DC does not mean you can be a Great coach but if you are a winner and have been a HC then the odds are you can do it again and improve! Tom can do it…if not, then we will find someone else but to not give him a chance an moan about what could have been does sound like someone who isn’t a fan…just the way I see it.

    Go Pack!!!

Are you always so negative? And are we about through here?

  11. skywalkerdt 12/08/2006 at 2:32 PM #

simple- the time and place for arguing about who is the best candidate has come and gone. Tom O’brien, assuming you don’t scare him away, is the new head coach of Wolfpack Football. If you have any desire at all to see NCSU reach its amazing potential now is the time to show your full support of a new coaching staff in need. Remember, NCSU fans aren’t the only ones who can access this site and see a split fan base, media and recruits can see what is written here. Support the new coach and his staff now, praise the fact that NCSU should have a good 8/9 win season next year with a good disciplinarian controlling the talent we have and if a few years down the road we have regressed (difficult thing to do right now what with 3-9, losses to akron, southern miss, and unc) rather and progressed let’s talk again. Don’t put caps on the team and assume that because he hasn’t gone to the BCS before he can’t. SUPPORT THE WOLFPACK AND UNITE THE FAN BASE JUST LIKE WE TALKED ABOUT WITH THE BASKETBALL SEARCH!!!

  12. wolfpacker420 12/08/2006 at 2:33 PM #

I’ve seen the light now and concur with you guys it’s just a hard pill to swallow when all of our rivals are just getting better than we are trying to. Go Pack 4-Life I wish the best but my gut has a different feeling to this hire!! I’m just glad that maybe our basketball program will take the right turn to national prominence!! Or the swim team, baseball, w.basketball, or volleyball just don’t feel a powerhouse on the way in Football.

  13. TNCSU 12/08/2006 at 2:36 PM #

Concur with Running Wolf — with all the negative LF talk, I think this time, as with Sidney, he has made a good hire. Let’s just thank our lucky stars that Wolfpacker420 isn’t our AD!

    Interview:
Wolfpacker420: What is your record against VT, Miami, and FSU?

    TOB: “3 wins 15 losses”
    Chow: “Never played ’em”
    Fisher: “Never played ’em”
    Johnson: “Never played ’em”
Saban: “Who?? I’m coaching the Dolphins, and just turned down $50 million.”

Wolfpacker420: “Okay, Jimbo, you’ve got a cool name, and we all know LSU is known for their Offense, not their DEFENSE, so you’re our Man.”

  14. brown pelican 12/08/2006 at 2:40 PM #

perspective—miami missed on the rutgers hfc—bama looks like they are going to miss on the wvu hfc—we got the bc hfc—best record of those three over the past 10 years?—bc—we didn’t do too bad—in fact—we mighta done all right—give me a press conference!

  15. wolfpacker420 12/08/2006 at 2:40 PM #

OK Jimbo nice ring you got on!! Where is your ring Tom? You never won one well you seem like a clean coach. Come on and coach our team. Haven’t we meet before tom? Maybe in a different sport…. I know didn’t you coach m. basketball and leave for Arizona State. Lee Fowlers interview!!! Sucka Punk!!

  16. TNCSU 12/08/2006 at 2:48 PM #

    ^^^Wolfpacker420: “Sucka Punk!!” ?????

I knew it, Packbacker001 at 2:09 was correct, “First, I don’t trust the opinion of anyone with 420 in their handle. We get it, you like to smoke pot…that, or you celebrate Hitler’s death date with unabashed glee. Either way, it’s not a testament to your intelligence or frame of mind.”

BTW, the Special Teams Coach has a ring, too, should we hire him? or the O-line Coach??

I feel like I’m arguing with my 6 year old — no, actually, he’s alot more logical.

  17. Running Wolf 12/08/2006 at 2:52 PM #

Amato had a National Championship ring on (FSU) and he never took it off…that helped with UNC, WFU, GT, ECU, Akron, Clemson, MD, VA and S MS……….NOT!

  18. wolfpacker420 12/08/2006 at 2:54 PM #

What kind of logic do you have? Only thing you guys write is he has a great record and it’s a nice pick up!! If we can’t compare his losses at BC to coaching at state, then why can you guys drool over his so called big wins at BC compared to state? When someone challenges your opinion you start making personal shots. Reminds me of some heel fans i know!! Don’t get so offended when someone doesn’t agree with you. This is america and that my friend is why we don’t have to conform with your thoughts!!

  19. wolfpacker420 12/08/2006 at 2:58 PM #

Wasn’t the App St coach or the FSU coach open to interview for the job?

  20. tractor57 12/08/2006 at 2:58 PM #

I think I’ll check back in a couple days – the “lunatic fringe” seems to be rampant right now. Is TOB the best hire? I really don’t know but I like the potential direction of the football program under him.
Maybe LF got this one right – we’ll know in a couple years.

  21. highonlowe 12/08/2006 at 3:04 PM #

Jebus! 420, you’re annoying and won’t quit. People are getting offended not because you have a different opinion, but b/c you’re an ass. Usually I can check back here casually throughout the day for some insightful commentary, but you’ve successfully highjacked the whole thread. Kudos!

  22. wolfpacker420 12/08/2006 at 3:09 PM #

Looking forward to our chances against Alabama since their lose to Notre Dame lastnight! I’m also high on Lowe, he will take us back to the days of Rodney Monroe, Thompson and Jimmy V. Kudos to Lowe!! Do you mean Jesus 420?

  23. wolfpacker420 12/08/2006 at 3:12 PM #

Time for the Packman show holla later PackFans Hold it down for the pound!! Congrats TOB please make me a believer! Wolfpack 4-Life!!

  24. 94MEGrad 12/08/2006 at 3:16 PM #

All of this useless banter back and forth would be entertaining if it weren’t so sad. I don’t understand how anyone can say this is a “bad” hire. Conservative, maybe, but TOB has proven that he can win (and win consistently) at a smaller school with high academic requirements. I’m excited about the next 5-7 years of Wolfpack football.

  25. PackBacker001 12/08/2006 at 3:17 PM #

TNCSU said: “I knew it, Packbacker001 at 2:09 was correct. ‘First, I don’t trust the opinion of anyone with 420 in their handle. We get it, you like to smoke pot…'”

Perhaps, but to be honest, TNCSU, it takes one to know one. 🙂
I just kinda grew out of it.

Is there a dead skunk in here?
