ACC Opening Act (Updated)

SFN has made no secret of our affection and appreciation for the manner in which Dave Leitao runs his program.. So, when Sidney Lowe and Leitao talk before each team’s ACC opener tomorrow, one could argue that both could feel they are greeting themselves in another place and time. It’s not the twilight zone, just another ACC basketball opener.

Similar to Lowe’s six scholarship players this year, Leitao’s first campaign as UVA’s coach last season saw the Cavs go to battle with only 8 scholarship players. Ultimately, the Cavs managed through the ACC season with a 4-2 record in route to a 7-9 finish. The Cavs’ 15-15 overall record earned Leitao’s boys a trip to Palo Alto to play the Stanford Cardinal in the NIT. Much higher expectations accompany the Cavs this year, its inaugural season in 15,000 seat John Paul Jones Arena.

With a freshman class of five scholarship players – bringing the total to twelve on the team – Leitao gets the opportunity to make a run through the ACC with quality depth and a versatile roster. What his team lacked last year was compensated by focus and execution. The question now is if the new roster can provide the depth without compromising the chemistry and character of last year’s squad?

To this point in the season the Cavs are passing the test – currently ranked in the Top 25 with a big win over Arizona certainly bodes well for the program which may boast the ACC’s best backcourt with Sean Singletary and JR Reynolds. For two detailed previews of Sunday’s game you can click here for Pack Pride and here for Section Six’s statistical look at the Cavs.

Virginia’s D isn’t going to block shots or force a lot of turnovers; they get stops with FG defense and good defensive rebounding. Our turnover rate, then, is going to be dependent on how many unforced errors we commit. Protect the ball and we’ll get plenty of shots at the basket; that’s the good news. The bad news: very few second chances will come our way.

Leitao’s comments regarding the difference between this year’s Cavalier squad and last year’s were nearly prophetic:

“We don’t get a chance to play against last year’s team…If we did, we’d probably beat them…hopefully.”

Well Dave, think of life as a theater and ACC Basketball as a stage. Sidney Lowe’s ’06-’07 Wolfpack could serve as a good understudy of the ’05-’06 Cavs. So you may get to use that as a measuring stick after all.

I really hope that the fans of the Pack Nation have the same hope that the VA fans did and do.

I, for one, am proud to see the LowePack doing so well, and I feel genuinely excited for this season.

    Go Pack!

Win, lose or draw the current Wolfpack BB team is exciting to watch. I salute the players and the coaching staff. For the first time in years I’m really anticipating the BB season. Tomorrow should be fun (maybe or maybe not a win but fun).

I’m very interested in seeing how this team handles themselves on the road. They’ve weathered adversity quite well so far.

I wonder if there will be an article in the N&O tomorrow about the game?

I’m just glad it will Be Lowe on the sidelines tomorrow.

Meanwhile, out at Arizona State, HerbBall has set in. The Devils are struggling against Big 10 weakling Minn., losing 55-37 w/ 9:49 remaining. After being down 2 at the half, Herb’s adjustments, no doubt, have made the difference, kind of.

If the ‘Pack’s guards can hold UVa’s guards….WE WILL CONTINUE TO OWN UVa IN HOOPS!!!!

It will be interesting to see how battles down low in the paint go against UVA. McCauley is coming on strong and Costner may be able to stretch their defense. Besides Cain, they get valuable minutes from Mikalauska, Soroye, and Penn transfer Pettinella. Besides Cain, no real scoring or intimadation to speak off. They use most if not all the fouls they are alotted. In the end it may be the edge that this game could tipped one way or another on (If Singletary doesn’t go off on us).
Another thought is how to slow down Singetary, Reynolds, and Mamadi Diane (54% 3 pt. shooting). Lots of zone, box in one, man, ect. Singletary needs to be kept off the foul line to keep him from destroying us (39-40 at FT line this year).

It will not bother me alot if the Pack doesn’t win another game this season – as long as they play with the attitude and spirit that they showed against Michigan on Monday! Wolfpack BB’s future outlook is spendid!

really good article in the N & O on Nieman. I’m looking forward to seeing him and the rest of Sid’s bunch in action, win or lose. It helps that Nieman, at 6’5″, player at WF Rolesville as a primary ballhandler. He should be able to spell Fells and Grant at certain times in able to get the WolfPack into their halfcourt offense. Hopefully Grant will play a monster game on offense as a “point forward”.
