Tuesday’s Football Update

We are expecting this “search” to be pretty quick and pretty painless.

It now looks as thought things are evolving as it has appeared they would – if Bill Cowher says no then Paul Johnson is the man. We expect that NC State will receive an answer from Bill Cowher by the end of the week (likely Thursday or Friday).

* After our comments yesterday, you really should read this entry focused on Bill Cowher from Dave Glenn’s blog. It is excellent and succinct and should paint the picture that you need regarding Cowher perfectly.

* Adam Gold at 850TheBuzz is reporting that Cowher is not going to accept the job in this blog entry. You should know that Coach Cowher has a pre-scheduled weekly press conference every Tuesday at noon. What Gold is speculating is that Cowher will be asked of the NC State in the press conference and will address the issue at that time where he will tell the public that he is not coming to NC State .

* SFN has no confirmation of Gold’s report.

* Coach Johnson still has the Army/Navy game to coach this weekend, so we would not expect any announcement prior to the conclusion of that game. The timing of this game probably allows NC State to wait a bit longer on Bill Cowher to make a decision.

* Jim Donnan has been lobbying behind the scenes for the job but does not seem to be picking up much traction with Wolfpackers. Seven years ago Donnan was offered the job after Cowher turned it down but chose to remain at Georgia. NC State then hired Chuck Amato.

* Assistant coaches Curt Cignetti and Dick Portee have been retained by NC State to help maintain continuity during the transition period.

Johnson is a really good college coach and his record will back that up. Fisher, Chow, Foster, Holiday and the like are good coordinators and to project them into that next level is just pure speculation. They may all turn out to be good or great but you really are guessing without the track record on that level.

  2. 98st8 11/28/2006 at 7:30 PM #

seems like there are a lot of good coaches out there not named Paul Johnson…why are we acting like we have three candidates to choose from????

  3. old13 11/28/2006 at 8:19 PM #

“SFN: when you say “If not Cowher, then Paul Johnson is the man”… is this just random speculation or do you actually have good insight to this gesture.”

I’d be interested in a response to that question.

someone has to know something. it is really quite

  5. lynchjm 11/28/2006 at 8:28 PM #

Johnson might not be able to outrecruit Skip Holtz, but in the 1998 playoffs his team ran for about 600 yards against ol Skip’s team.

PJ’s last teams at GA Southern had a young running back named Adrian Peterson… the one before the one at OU… who ran for over a hundred yards against UGA between the hedges when Southern almost upset the Dawgs at home. I believe they won the national championship that year… the point of this is that Adrian, now with the Chicago Bears, struggled his entire life with a severe speach impediment that limited his educational maturation. As a result he was not eligible to play D1A ball. He was probably the best or at least one of the top 3 runningbacks in college at the time. We couldn’t get that kid into State, unfortunately. And I hate to make an Amato-like excuse but that does make a difference, slightly, to PJ’s ridiculous offensive production at Ga Southern running the option attack. Basicly he had a top tier D1A back running against defenses slightly better than dominant highschool D’s. Think TA in highschool at little single A Albemarle. The numbers are skewed.

And I say all of this only for conversation sake, not because I don’t necessarily think PJ can’t win here in Raleigh.

Also talked to a friend of mine who played on the O-line for Johnson in Statesville. He has great admiration for Johnson and said he’s a fantastic coach who connects with the kids and earns their respect. He did, however, mention his preferred offensive scheme as a possible liability against BCS conference talent week in and week out.

GAWolf I am from Statesville. When did Johnson coach in Statesville? Where did he coach.

Sorry for being an idiot, Johnson didnt coach in Statesville. Your friend is in Statesville. Sorry for wasting space on the blog.

“what makes you think that he would make a good AD? Why would he want to be an AD? That job is stressful as hell and all you get is boosters telling you how to do your job. You probably feel like you have to listen because some guy gave a million bucks but has no idea what he is talking about. NO fun in that job at all, just work and no glory”

I think Amato would be perfect for the AD job. Amato needs to stay in Raleigh, either as a DC or the AD. I’d have Cowher for AD if he doesn’t want to coach anymore. Why? Because he loves the University. He and Amato both have a strong love for the university. They have good heads on their shoulders. They’ve both been around the university. Cowher helped get Amato his job, and could make a smart decsion for coaching searches. Like Amato or not, and even with the past few years, Amato was a good hire for NC State as he greatly improved the state of NC State’s football program.

Amato or Cowher for AD IMO if neither is on the next coaching staff.

  12. teacher 11/28/2006 at 9:50 PM #

The problem with Amato being the AD or anything else at NCSU is the fact that he does not get along with the people he works with. We have had at least 3 offensive and 3 defensive coordinators in Amato’s 7 years. Do we really want him in charge of all the coaches in every sport? He would run half of them out of town. He is not a people person. According to a former coach, he is an “egotistical maniac.”

I think Amato needs to go back to FSU and coach with another undisciplined man, Bobby Bowden. Go back home, Chuck.

My bad….. Statesboro…. that’s where GA Southern is… not Statesville. As in Statesboro Blues… the Brothers wrote a song about it.

  14. E-RO 11/28/2006 at 10:11 PM #

Hmm… This just came to mind.
    From: http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/news;_ylt=AlkTjJpnryN_v0RRpowqRqMcvrYF?slug=ap-ncstate-amato&prov=ap&type=lgns

“N.C. State (3-9) lost seven straight games this season to finish with a losing record for the second time in three seasons since quarterback Philip Rivers went to the NFL. On Saturday, the Wolfpack finished the season with a 21-16 home loss to East Carolina.

After the game, Amato was asked if he expected to be back for an eighth season.

“Why not?” he said, following a two-year pattern of deflecting criticism with barrel-chested bravado. ”

What if this is him saying he’ll be back for an eight season at NC State, only holding another position (such as DC)?

  15. highstick 11/28/2006 at 10:43 PM #

I don’t know where this “recruiting magic” of Skip Holtz is coming from. He, nor his Dad did it at South Carolina. Just ask Spurrier, the Holtz’s left him basically with nothing except a bunch of thugs and addicts. Count the number of them that Spurrier kicked off the team.

Lou had it and somehow the game passed him by but you’ll never convince me that Skip has what it takes to run a major program. ECTC is not a major program and never will be!

  16. dawgitall 11/28/2006 at 11:57 PM #

acctually Statesboro Blues wasn’t written by the ABB, just recorded by them. It’s an old blues number from the 30s or 40s. Blind Willie McTell if I’m not mistaken.

I just an ignorant fan, not a XandO expert but please explain to me again the down side for PJ. He’s still relatively young with 27 years experience and has won everywhere he has been. He has run several different style offenses depending on where he was and the type of personel he had.

  17. TomCat 11/29/2006 at 12:23 AM #

I wouldn’t be bashing a guy (Holtz) who inherited a bottom feeder bunch at ECU and just came into CF- with far less talent- and beat NCSU. That sounds like a solid coach to me…. ECU, is a solid program again under his leadership.

  18. choppack1 11/29/2006 at 8:17 AM #

dawgitall – the downside is the “gimmick” offense – especially since our entire offensive personnell was recruited to play a pro-style offense. I think this offense would be effective, but I would worry about our current players, and a rash of transfers. He’ll definitely find guys who can run his system.

There’s also concerned if the results from a fan’s perspective would be similar to the b’ball results w/ Sendek’s Princeton offense.

I spent about 13 years travelling in the SE and had a plant in Statesboro, GA. We, the SFN, will have to really come together to equal the school spirit that exists in this small college town. They were 110% behind their program. I used to go over the college and eat pizza with the students, knew several graduates, saw the local Civic support for the college, etc. They were a great bunch. We are a GREAT bunch.

PJ brought them the glory and has a great record…He is NOT as glitzy as some of the candidates, but really has a solid, winning background. As the wise old sage said…”Keep reaching for the stars…but keep your feet on the ground”. BC is a VERY LONG SHOT…. In addition, he does NOT have the NCAA Background that Butch Davis brings to UNX….make sure we have a plan B….FUF needs to deliver….maybe the “consultant” is really working with the BOT and Chancellor. I am NOT dismissing any other candidates out there…we need to consider who is available and also WHO is currently looking for a HFBC…..

As the Admiral told Maverick in Top Gun….”your family history ain’t the best in the Navy…” Our record as a FB School and our record for becoming extremely disillusioned and disenchanted with HFBC is pathetic…If JP is correct in his blog, we have NOT had any stability since Earle Edwards (who was coaching when I was Freshman). Not necessarily in order…Michaels was a caretaker that Edwards hand picked…(remember Edwards ONLY victory over a major ranked school was lead by CTC and the White Shoe Defense – I remember that Saturday night to this day)…Holtz and Rein resigned, Reed, Sheridan, O’Cain and Amato were FIRED….We need to realistically decide which of the “pretty” girls will actually dance with us….

If you don’t know Statesboro, GA from Statesville, NC and you don’t know the history of the Georgia Southern…then do your homework…

    GO PACK

“Jim Donnan has been lobbying behind the scenes for the job but does not seem to be picking up much traction with Wolfpackers. ”

Thank goodness. Because as far as he is concerned, not just NO – but HELL NO. Let’s just say I’ve had some personal interaction with the man and if you think CTC was abrasive and abusive this pr*** takes it to a whole other level.

Easy there Iceman… Can a guy not make a typo?

If you’ll take a moment to reread all of my posts you will realize that you’re jumping the wrong guy and completely off base. I went to law school with a guy who played football for Paul Johnson. I hung out with him daily for three years… unlike you who just ate pizza with a few students. He practices law in StatesBORO to this day.

My friend had nothing but great things to say about Johnson and his coaching ability but reiterated some of our concerns that the offense MIGHT not be capable of getting pounded by the highest quality college defenses week in and week out. A fast, disciplined D can overcome the problems that the option attack poses.

Will Johnson play to his strengths or be hardheaded with his gameplan? That’s the question at hand. No one is saying Johnson wouldn’t produce here, but there are questions that must be seriously analyzed (about all of the coaching prospects) before we rush to make a hire.

The other thing about StatesBORO is that it is probably best compared to ECU as far as The University of North Carolina System is concerned. Much like ECU, they do in fact have great support for their athletic teams. The town itself is smaller, StatesBORO that is, but the party atmosphere and the type of students… and thus athletes… it attracts is much different than a relatively difficultly academic University such as NC State. That’s the simple truth of the matter. Not to mention, being that’s it’s not a D1A school the entrance requirements are much more slack.

So please, do yourself a favor and relax before you go pouncing on one of your wingmen there Iceman.

    Again….

Paul Johnson is a fine coach, but Jimbo Fisher has done more in less time. To answer LSUTigersfan….the reason Fisher will leave is because he doesnt like Les Miles. Neither do a couple of other coaches with the Tigers. There is a good chance that IF Fisher were to be named coach we would get 3 or 4 assistants from the LSU staff. But that isnt even important, because it is speculation. What I am more concerned with is why people continue pointing out that Johnson is a head coach and the others are assistant coaches…like that is even relevant. If Johnson had been head coach at Iowa, Illinois,South Carolina, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, or any school with any kind of size, competition, or conference strength I would be the first to listen to that argument. But he has coached at Ga. Southern & Navy!!!! Please read that last line again aloud….and repeat over and over again until you realize that being a good coach at those schools means nothing in regards to forecasting success at NC State. Now if he was applying at APP State….that would be a different story. But to say Johnson is a proven winner because he’s beaten Army, Air Force, UConn, Deleware St, etc. is beyond rediculous!

One other thing that my brother brought to my attention yesterday. Someone answer this question honestly for me:

If Paul Johnson wasnt from NC would he have a chance in hell at getting this job?

Seriously. If he were from Minnesota would he have a prayer? But he’s a local boy…and for some reason that means something. At NC State we need to quit making these good ‘ol boy hires and get a real friggin coach. Who cares if the new coach is from NC or the Moon! Let’s just get someone who can get the job done.

Finally, to suggest we shouldnt hire a coach because he might leave in 4 or 5 years is rediculous! I hope like hell whomever we hire does so good that everyone in the country wants him as their coach. That would mean we are getting 9 or 10 wins per season. I’ll take my chances with a coach like that.

Paul Johnson is going to be on during the third hour of the Jim Rome radio show this afternoon.

I inerested in hearing it. I thought others might as well
