Tuesday’s Football Update

We are expecting this “search” to be pretty quick and pretty painless.

It now looks as thought things are evolving as it has appeared they would – if Bill Cowher says no then Paul Johnson is the man. We expect that NC State will receive an answer from Bill Cowher by the end of the week (likely Thursday or Friday).

* After our comments yesterday, you really should read this entry focused on Bill Cowher from Dave Glenn’s blog. It is excellent and succinct and should paint the picture that you need regarding Cowher perfectly.

* Adam Gold at 850TheBuzz is reporting that Cowher is not going to accept the job in this blog entry. You should know that Coach Cowher has a pre-scheduled weekly press conference every Tuesday at noon. What Gold is speculating is that Cowher will be asked of the NC State in the press conference and will address the issue at that time where he will tell the public that he is not coming to NC State .

* SFN has no confirmation of Gold’s report.

* Coach Johnson still has the Army/Navy game to coach this weekend, so we would not expect any announcement prior to the conclusion of that game. The timing of this game probably allows NC State to wait a bit longer on Bill Cowher to make a decision.

* Jim Donnan has been lobbying behind the scenes for the job but does not seem to be picking up much traction with Wolfpackers. Seven years ago Donnan was offered the job after Cowher turned it down but chose to remain at Georgia. NC State then hired Chuck Amato.

* Assistant coaches Curt Cignetti and Dick Portee have been retained by NC State to help maintain continuity during the transition period.

Any chance that if we got Cowher, that Jimbo would come on as OC? I hear he wants to get out of LSU b/c of some internal problems with the HC.

We should hire John Bunting as an Assistant Coach, that would be funny.

    Has everbody lost their mind?

Please guys, take a moment to look at something under highonLowe’s bio for your boy Paul Johnson. From 1979-2006 is 27 friggin years. 27 years. He has been a coach for 27 years. And guess what? He has been soooo impressive that he has climbed ALL the way up head coach at friggin NAVY!! Let’s put this in perspective. He started coaching when Jimbo Fisher was 14, and he has “WOWED” the college coaching world by leaping up the ladder all the way to a service academy! Meanwhile….all Jimbo Fisher has done is be the OC/QB Coach at 2 Top 5 Programs….Auburn & LSU! That’s right Top 5 folks. Not only that, his offenses at LSU have broken 13 records in 6 years!! Paul Johnson is spending his weeks preparing for mighty Air Force and Army. Jimbo Fisher is preparing to score against Florida, Auburn, Tennessee, Alabama, South Carolina, Georgia, and Arkansas…who they just put 34 on last week and won!

It’s time to get real. Do you want to win at NC State….or do we wanna keep being the red-headed step-child? Do you think that a guy from Ga. Southern and Navy can recruit against Butch Davis, Steve Spurrier, Tommy Bowden, Frank Beamer, or even Skip Holtz? Get real! Jimbo Fisher has been a recruiting coordinator. He has gone against Urban Meyer, Houston Nutt, Phil Fulmer, Steve Spurrier, Marc Richt, etc. and gotten some damn good players for Les Miles at LSU. And the guy is only 41!!!

If there is anyone who thinks Paul Johnson is a better candidate than Jimbo Fisher, they need their friggin head examined! I will make this one promise to all you Johnson lovers: In 5 years we will all be watching as Jimbo Fisher is leading a Top 10 program year in and year out. Is it gonna be at NC State? Or will we be once again watching a mediocre football program with a meadiocre coach while the fish that got away is playing in the BCS?

To answer Dan’s (probably rhetorical) question, I would be hiring PJ in large part because of his offense. From what I can tell, the guy is an offensive innovator who has been willing to tweak his system over the years. He really seems to have a lot of time invested in the system that he runs, which I think is a good thing. He knows how to teach it and he knows how to call plays from it. He would also seem likely to bring assistant coaches who know the O inside and out (esp OL coach).

To put it another way, if PJ were to be hired and then decide to keep Trestman and run the god-awful crap we’ve been running because it is “pro style” I’d lobby for his immediate dismissal before he ever coached a game.

pq – I think Jimbo Fisher is a strong candidate, but one of my concerns is the fact that if he is good, his stay will likely be a short one – that’s if he is a good coach.

Regarding PJ – yea, it’s taken him a while to climb the ladder, but that’s not because ADs are really intelligent or anything.

As I stated, Paul Johnson went up against Jim Tressell – in a championship game and blew him out. Can any coach in Division 1A say that? Can Jimbo say that?

Personally, I think it’s silly and stupid to ignore either candidate if you can’t get Cowher. Each one brings his own strong suit and each one has his own element which should spark concern.

I want 2 things from this head coach:
    1) I want him to be successful – going to bowl games 80% of the time and a winning record in conference.
    2) If he can do 1, I’d like him to stay for at least 6 or 7 years. If Jimbo does well, he will be a very hot commodity. With his roots in the SEC I think there’s a very strong chance he’s looking at the next open big time position.

One key difference in this search than our b’ball search – when it comes to football, we’re move of a stepping stone coaching job. That doesn’t mean that we can’t turn ourselves into one of the best job in college football, but right now when it comes to football, I wouldn’t call this a Top 25 job. Heck, in our own conference, I’d probably put us behind FSU, Miami, VaTech and Clemson in terms of the overall attractiveness of the position right now – and that’s calling UNC, GaTech, and UVa a toss-up which some would legitately argue about. (For comparison, I thought we had arguably the 3rd most overall attractive b’ball program.)

Don’t really know what to call this but the writers (if you can call them that) in Pittsburgh obviously don’t think Cowher will be here next year. They also don’t have very nice things to so about the Pack…

  6. E-RO 11/28/2006 at 5:12 PM #

I really like the idea of Jimbo Fisher right now. The offense he would bring, and the coaching ability he has are the kind of thing that NC State needs.

I do not want to see the Flexbone offense attached to the S-Block of NC State. I do not want to see Johnson attached to the S-Block of NC State.

  7. GAWolf 11/28/2006 at 5:23 PM #

Not to mention “Jimbo” is a good ol’ Moo U name… I imagine the UNC jokesters will be having their way with that one.

  8. beowolf 11/28/2006 at 5:25 PM #

I emailed BobLee back in the day when Jimbo’s name surfaced for UNC if the Chapel Hill peeps could handle a coach named Jimbo.

  9. charger17 11/28/2006 at 5:34 PM #

OK . . . I don’t know anything from the Steelers press conference today. Did Cowher say anything?

  10. E-RO 11/28/2006 at 5:42 PM #

I think Cowher could make a good AD

For a little coaching search comedy, check out the “list” on one of Bama’s websites.

    http://alabama.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=610496

The Tide fans still have inflated views of themselves with names like Saban, Spurrier, Stoops, and Beamer on that list. It would be comical if it wasn’t so sad.

Herein lies the paradox of Mike Shula. During the Shula search, the Tide came down to two guys with no head coaching experience and little experience at all on the college level. Now they think they’re going to hire one of the best head coaches in the history of college football. If they can, then Shula must have done one hell of a job rebuilding Bama and shouldn’t have been fired.

While it is possible that the Tide could raid the Big East for any of the three good coaches in that league, to raid another BCS conference they’d have to go after a lesser program like Wake Forest, which certainly offers a good candidate this year. On the other hand, why would any of the Big East coaches want to leave. They’re reasonably well paid, and they’re almost guaranteed to be in the mix for a BCS bowl every year.

Miami may have even more problems. They’re not in the Big East anymore, and they’re not going to dominate the ACC. This year in the ACC was a fluke. The conference won’t have to replace record numbers of NFL players next year and should be much stronger. Miami’s facilities aren’t up to the standards of other elite programs, and their fan base never has been. The right coach can do well there, but a bad hire could send the Hurricane’s further South.

If Schiano turns them down, the “U” may have to settle.

  12. 98st8 11/28/2006 at 6:07 PM #

GAWolf: Good point^ but they just hired a coach named Butch… I guess that fits them as well

  13. PAPacker 11/28/2006 at 6:11 PM #

Is Schiano supposedly a lock at Miami or to stay at Rutgers this fall? Why isn’t he on the list?

  14. PAPacker 11/28/2006 at 6:11 PM #

If Jimbo is a real SEC guy, he would not stay at State that long.

  15. chilly water 11/28/2006 at 6:19 PM #

    anything new with cowher???????????

  16. 98st8 11/28/2006 at 6:22 PM #

SFN: when you say “If not Cowher, then Paul Johnson is the man”… is this just random speculation or do you actually have good insight to this gesture. It seems as if that were the case, then why in the world would we hire Neinas??? Every State fan that I have talked to in the past two days has suggested Cowher, Johnson, Jimbo, Chow. I just don’t get why he is suggested as being the man this early when Neinas has had two days to work the country. Fowler could have saved his money on a consulting firm if it were that easy.

  17. LSUTigerFan 11/28/2006 at 6:23 PM #

I think Jimbo’s actually from West Virginia, and he’s done some stints outside the SEC. He came to LSU from Cinci; so I don’t think conference affiliation is an issue for him though he has coached at both Auburn and LSU.

Most feel Jimbo has already turned down other head coaching jobs – notably Mississippi State and Cinci – and is waiting for a big jump like Richt to Georgia or Stoops to OU.

I find it hard to believe, but several media sources have reported he makes $1 million per year at LSU. With the talent he has on offense, he’ll remain a hot prospect every year until he takes the “perfect” job, and if he’s really making that much money, he shouldn’t be in any hurry to leave.

  18. 98st8 11/28/2006 at 6:25 PM #

OK, so what if cowher conveys to us that he would be ready for the job in 3-5 years. Does that lead our guys to go after someone like Jimbo that could take the program to another level… but may leave after yr 3or 4?

  19. WestCoast 11/28/2006 at 6:33 PM #

E-RO….I agree. Cowher takes the year off from coaching, then steps into the role of AD at State. Hmmm.

  20. packpigskinfan23 11/28/2006 at 6:35 PM #

^do we REALLY want another change any time soon? I dont disagree with what you are throwing out there…. but it just dosnt sound like it would be worth it to us, or the in coming coach.

my question is why does it seem that all talk of NORM CHOW has died down?!?! I think he should be evaluated with the rest of them… but am personally pulling for him second to Cowher. I hope we arent just stepping aside and conceiding him to ASU!!!!

what if Amato went to ASU as an assistant to Chow?!?!?! how fucking crazy would that be?!?!?!?!

  21. packpigskinfan23 11/28/2006 at 6:36 PM #

    *ment for 98st8’s comment

  22. 98st8 11/28/2006 at 6:39 PM #

what makes you think that he would make a good AD? Why would he want to be an AD? That job is stressful as hell and all you get is boosters telling you how to do your job. You probably feel like you have to listen because some guy gave a million bucks but has no idea what he is talking about. NO fun in that job at all, just work and no glory

  23. 98st8 11/28/2006 at 6:41 PM #

^packpigskinfan23… no we don’t want the scenario that I threw out there., just lloking at the scenarios where everyone says that JImbo wuld leave for SEC school after 5 yrs…

  24. JimValvano 11/28/2006 at 6:55 PM #

Why not Bud Foster from Virginia Tech if we’re talking coordinators???

Why not Doc Holiday from Florida???

I don’t really have a problem with Jimbo Fisher…I’m a little concerned about homeboy from navy or wherever he’s from…

I just wish Bill Cowher would come.

I would like to say that I believe I was the first to run through this possibility sometime in July…on this site. I just had a feeling, and to be honest with you…I still do.

  25. 98st8 11/28/2006 at 6:59 PM #

We’re all with you on that JV. Everyday I try to convince myself that it won’t happen, but I still have hope. He hasn’t said no yet. Why wouldn’t he end the speculation right away????
