Tuesday’s Football Update

We are expecting this “search” to be pretty quick and pretty painless.

It now looks as thought things are evolving as it has appeared they would – if Bill Cowher says no then Paul Johnson is the man. We expect that NC State will receive an answer from Bill Cowher by the end of the week (likely Thursday or Friday).

* After our comments yesterday, you really should read this entry focused on Bill Cowher from Dave Glenn’s blog. It is excellent and succinct and should paint the picture that you need regarding Cowher perfectly.

* Adam Gold at 850TheBuzz is reporting that Cowher is not going to accept the job in this blog entry. You should know that Coach Cowher has a pre-scheduled weekly press conference every Tuesday at noon. What Gold is speculating is that Cowher will be asked of the NC State in the press conference and will address the issue at that time where he will tell the public that he is not coming to NC State .

* SFN has no confirmation of Gold’s report.

* Coach Johnson still has the Army/Navy game to coach this weekend, so we would not expect any announcement prior to the conclusion of that game. The timing of this game probably allows NC State to wait a bit longer on Bill Cowher to make a decision.

* Jim Donnan has been lobbying behind the scenes for the job but does not seem to be picking up much traction with Wolfpackers. Seven years ago Donnan was offered the job after Cowher turned it down but chose to remain at Georgia. NC State then hired Chuck Amato.

* Assistant coaches Curt Cignetti and Dick Portee have been retained by NC State to help maintain continuity during the transition period.

SFN – You mention in the PJ entry that army/navy game is this weekend which would mean no announcement before this weekend. Are you inferring a decision could be made next week (even if it’s not Cowher)?

A lot of good commentary here. I echo Dan’s concerns, Meyer maybe the hot coach but his offense looked anemic against FSU this past weekend. Florida has tons of talent at the skill positions too.

guess Adam Gold bombed on his prediction…….the NC State job was not even brought up in BC’s press conference. i can’t stand AG.

dan—your call for the ‘pro style offense’ to be run by the new regime is somewhat misleading—old style ‘pro offense’ dictated two backs and a tight end—as pro offense has evolved, many of the sets are one or no back sets with spread principles employed—yes the line splits aren’t as pronounced as say texas tech—nonetheless—modern professional offense incorporates many of the run and shoot principles along with the west coast principles of the 80’s—any offense that the new regime employs must be multiple enough to include a viable spread package—preferabley with multiple tempo adjustments to be successful—west virginia?—coach rod’s success there is suited to his talent—when he had shaun king at tulane they threw 54 touchdown passes—when he had woody at clemson—they developed the gun run beyond what it was at glenville and tulane—the pack should and will land a coach with similar vision and flexibility—go pack

so when the presser started in Pittsburgh they must have stated beforehand that Bill would not answer any questions as it relates to the NCSTATE job or the presser would end???? Then someone did and Bill stormed off saying Happy Holidays

  5. Cosmo96 11/28/2006 at 1:38 PM #

I didn’t hear the Cowher press conference, but word is that the subject (NC State coaching job) never came up.

  6. GAWolf 11/28/2006 at 1:38 PM #

    AG is an angry yankee.

  7. 98st8 11/28/2006 at 1:40 PM #

Guys…never listen to AG for insight. He said 3 weeks ago that Butch Davis would never go to Carolina. He doesn’t know anything, he is just speculating. How would AG know what BC is going to say in a press conference…

We are expecting this “search” to be pretty quick and pretty painless.

The quotes give it away, and I’m excited as hell. Cowher is young (51); still plenty of time.

Concerning Paul Johnson, just watch the Army/Navy game this weekend. Imagine that offense with the “Block S” on their helmets and the other team being Carolina. If Paul’s our guy at the end of the search, he’s our guy. If you don’t want tickets, then don’t buy them. We need to support whoever the coach is and know one thing for certain….we won’t be 3-9 even with Navy’s offense.

“Why assume that Johnson would keep the offense at an ACC school that he used at a service academy”

I think its just as valid to ask “why assume that PJ would use a different offense”? I dont think you base a long term decision on a hypothetical like that. Yeah, he MIGHT not run it. Then again, he MIGHT. We dont know.

Its one thing to base retaining the old coach FOR ONE YEAR based on hypotheticals. However, the decision to hire a new coach is at least a five year committment. There is no firing him next year if he does run it, and it flops.

The point of my post was to just put it out there that the spread wont succeed in a strong ACC (although WVa did blow Maryland away..but this year’s ACC wasnt all that).

And West Virginia is no longer meeting expectations. They were expected not to lose games to teams like South Florida. Rod has hit a ceiling there with that system. If he doesnt go Urban and adjust that is as far as he will go.

But, hey, if he’ll come in here and jsut run what it takes to win…fine! But all that is a hypothetical. We KNOW what he has been successfull with NOW. Why assume he’ll do something different? I’d rather know what we are getting.

“Guys…never listen to AG for insight. He said 3 weeks ago that Butch Davis would never go to Carolina”

I tend to agree with this. I think DG is WAY overrated and overblown by 850. He was last on Lowe. He didnt report Butch Davis until last, and then, AFTER THE FACT, claimed he knew all along but was sworn to secrecy. What journalist would ever get away with that? I call bs. It seems to me he is late more than he is early.

Would anyone turn down a chance to have Wake’s success this season? Its driven alot more by smart, disciplined play than it is a gimmic offense.

Would anyone like to see what Jim Grobe could do with our facilities & advantages to recruits with vs. Wake’s?

Grobe may not be realistic, but by all accounts I’ve read, Paul Johnson would likely give us a similar type of program. One that plays smart, is well disciplined, wins more games than it doesn’t, is currently the premier PROGRAM in the state of NC, &, oh by the way….occasionally plays for championships. I’d take that right about now if Cowher says no.

  13. DiscoStu65 11/28/2006 at 2:06 PM #

My buddy played at Navy under Johnson. He said he’s a decent coach, but he’s a jerk. Says he’s real stand-offish with the assistant coaches and the players. Not what we need here at NCSU. Plus the Triple Option would be a nightmare.

  14. WestCoast 11/28/2006 at 2:10 PM #

Well we saw what a “Players Coach” did this past season. They don’t have to like him, just respect him. And when we start winning, they’ll like winning.

  15. brown pelican 11/28/2006 at 2:13 PM #

dan—thanks for your clarification—my point is not to promote or deify coach rod—his record stands on its own—my point—our new guy must have the spread as an important part of his package—not necessarily his whole package—without consistent ability to change into one and no back sets the offense will lack the diversity to make it hard to defend at any level

  16. DiscoStu65 11/28/2006 at 2:13 PM #

I just want some friggin discipline. Thats not too much to ask for.

  17. wufpaxno1 11/28/2006 at 2:15 PM #

Paul Johnson has run a different offense every place that he has coached based upon the talent that was available and the level of competition. We complained when Herb ran the same set over and over again and are happy that Sid has shown flexibility in adapting to what the situation dictates. It’s called good coaching. Expect the same from someone like Paul Johnson. He’s a good coach and will run what ever scheme allows him to win where ever he coaching. And you can bet that his players will play with discipline.

Are there any negatives with Jimbo Fisher? Wouldn’t he be a safer choice than Johnson?

  20. Par Shooter 11/28/2006 at 2:28 PM #

The “underachieving” Mountaineers sure did look pretty good running UGa out of the Sugar Bowl last year. And they are 9-2 now? That’s not good enough for us? I think using the fact that WV got upset by USF last week as an argument against hiring Paul Johnson is a bit of a stretch. Rich has built a damn nice program up there that should be our envy.

As far as pro style offenses go…we just tried that. We even had a pro-OC to implement it. Personally, I wasn’t really impressed. I like the idea of more of a spread option offense that is different from the vanilla “west coast” garbage that most ACC schools are trying to run (and failing miserably). In fact, I’d go so far as to say that one of the weaknesses in the current ACC is a lack of offensive ingenuity. It seems like most schools are trying to use basic, pro style offenses with mediocre (at best) QB’s and the results are shaky. One look at the title game shows a team with probably the most different and run-oriented offense in the league vs. Calvin Johnson (honestly, their scheme makes no difference since he is a game changer).

  21. joe 11/28/2006 at 2:31 PM #

Any guy with no experience as a head coach is more risky than a current head coach. Johnson knows how to run a team and win. The only question is can he do it at a higher level in the ACC? Fisher may know how to run a team, but that is not known.

But that doesn’t mean Johnson is a better choice than Fisher. They could both do well at NCSU or both could bomb.

  22. Dan 11/28/2006 at 2:38 PM #

I want this clear. I think PJ is a good coach. I think Rich Rod is a good coach. I think Urban Meyer was a good coach when he was at Utah. I think more of Urban now that he knew to adjust his offense to deal with speed.

They are all great coaches. I’m just not that that offense is capable of succeeding in a conference that is littered with the fastest defenses in college football. There is a reason why the NFL is full ACC defenders. Speed. Yeah, we may be smaller, but we are faster.

I’m just concerned about all this hypothetical talk and assumptions about what offense he MIGHT run. We know what he runs now.

I guess the question you have to ask yourself is: If you knew for a fact that he would run the spread would you still want him? If so, then you are safe. If not, then you are making a big leap based on guesswork.

  23. WestCoast 11/28/2006 at 2:52 PM #

Dan…Absolutely I’d want him. If we have the same defense we did this year that gave up 21.83 pts per game, and an offense that produces 28.82 pts per game, then I’d take that all day long. Navy averaged those 28.82 pts per game…while our State offenses mustered 17.50. Yes, I know the level of competition is far superior in the ACC, so let’s say we average that magic number of 24 pts per game…would you still take that?

  24. justaguy 11/28/2006 at 3:02 PM #

“If we have the same defense we did this year that gave up 21.83 pts per game, and an offense that produces 28.82 pts per game, then I’d take that all day long.”

If we had an offense that produced 28.82 ppg this year, the defense wouldn’t have been on the field long enough to give up 21.83 ppg.

  25. choppack1 11/28/2006 at 3:48 PM #

    Repeat the following out loud:
There is no coach out there that we can sign that doesn’t have some type of huge question marks.

That is part of the risk of any coaching change. There are rarely sure things. Roy Williams – sure thing. Urban Meyer – pretty close to a sure thing. If Bobby Petrino takes a job somewhere – sure thing.

However, the vast majority of candidates have huge question marks for a school like us. That “night in shining armour” candidate doesn’t exist.
