Talking the Talk: Amato Should Resign with Loss to UNC

Does it feel particularly quiet for the week of State-Carolina?

It definitely feels quiet to us.

The N&O’s ACCNow Blog has a quick item about the game today in “Talking the Talk”.

How else do you explain two straight losses to UNC? Would you argue that UNC has been a better team than N.C. State?

At least in terms pf NFL talent, there is no discussion. Last April, N.C. State had six players drafted, and three in the first round of the NFL Draft, and Carolina had one, in the seventh round.

That doesn’t mean State should automatically beat Carolina, but it undoubtedly reflects poorly on Amato and his coaching staff. And conversely, John Bunting’s 3-2 record against State stands as the crowning achievement of his tenure in Chapel Hill.

The real interesting comments from the N&O come from their “Late Hits” column. Beside an arrow pointing downward the blog said:

Not for the current five-game losing streak but for the inevitable loss to North Carolina on Saturday. That’s right, a preemptive down arrow. Chuck Amato, who at worst should be 5-1 against UNC, should resign if he loses a third straight to a Carolina program that has been below average at best during his tenure.

‘Off the field’ comes this fantastic piece from Andrew Jones about Chuck Amato.

Despite a caricature image of red shoes, sunglasses and well-toned pectoral muscles, Amato is a man of substance unseen by fans. A man who holds a degree in mathematics and a master’s in education, both from N.C. State. A man who visits a friend in the hospital daily in hopes of sparking optimistic thoughts. A man with a tough-guy image who tears up when he hears the notes of Ave Maria.

John Bunting didn’t get too far for being a good man now did he? Personality pieces are great and all, but at this level, the ONLY thing that matters is wins and losses. At least, that seems to be the case for our peers. Perhaps one day we’ll wake up and feel the same way. I’m not counting on it, though.

If all that matters is winning and losing then why would you support any of our programs. Other than two NCAA titles in bball, which many on here don’t recall, we don’t have national programs in anything. Now if we keep complaining instead of supporting fball that is all we will ever have, nothing. I feel Chuck gets three more years as in the case of the former bball head coach. After that all bets are off.

Akron is currently #87 in the Sagarin rankings. Southern Miss is #59. We are at #66.

I liked the article too and felt bad for about five minutes. Then I reflected that it’s all the more astonishing that someone with such a disciplined and admirable personal life and habits could produce such an undisciplined and ineffective football program.

Now now Legacy mnan — didn’t we win the NCCA national title in bass fishin’ just a few weeks back?

No one commented on my idea of demoting Trestman after this year to QB coach and bringing in another OC. Is that completely out of the question?

If Amato wins these last two games he’s here and no changes will be made. If he loses, I think he’ll have to make a change of some sort just to get the media-monkey off his back.

If this were about being a nice guy then MO’C and Herb would still be our coaches. Heck, for that matter Les Robinson would still be around (shutter at the thought).
In the harsh reality of big college sports there’s not much room for softheartedness if anything other than mediocrity is going to be tolerated.
Plus while Chuck may do many fine things off the field and away from C-F, he has managed to portray an arrogant, egotistical, flashy, and at times abrasive persona.
I would suggest that if one lives by that persona then one will also die by it if he doesn’t deliver the goods.
For example, remember the two summers in a row that we heard rave reviews of how much our QB’s had improved in the off season? How about the boast that there would never be another losing season while he was at State.
Just like in any business you can’t just talk a good game.

GA- I can’t see that Trestman idea myself. I think the QB spot is where his judgement is the most questionable.

As far as Carolina’s recruiting still going strong regardless of their poor play and a mid season coaching shake up, it’s a given, and fairly automatic over there. The reasons being obvious for most adults out there. It also doesn’t mean that it’s easy for NC State to do likewise, especially after a poor season on the football field.

When NC State had the “You just keep on saying it, that’s right, we’re just good ol’ country boys. The same ones who are going to dominate your pansy a$$es, and in every way imaginable, and for the rest of your days on the planet” attitude, we could draw the local players away from the other programs. It’s tougher now, NC State doesn’t have any identity, good or bad. It’s stuck in limbo, holding it’s own at somewhere between it’s own hertitage, and the latest wine and cheese wannabe. And it’s only going to get tougher and tougher to recruit in the surrounding areas, and against the “f_agship,” after this season is over.

GaWolf – I dont think ego will allow Trestman to be QB coach. Big step down, and even so, not sure I want him as QB coach.

If Carolina is getting shed of their coach and we can’t beat them, why should we retain ours?

S— happens. John Fox, HC of Carolina Panthers, is having a tough time as is Bill Cowher at Pittsburg and he won the Super Bowl last year, for goodness sake.

No I’m not happy with our football record, no I don’t like it when our HC makes an ass out of himself, no I don’t like it when we have to call a TO before we can run a play following a kick off, no I don’t like the failed situation at QB but in contrast to JG and the Holes, NCSU could have had it go extremely well.

Coach Amato has done a lot of things well with this football team. Were it not for personal crisis with our kicker (his father is wasting away before his very eyes) our special teams would be considered outstanding.

A young , “do nothing” defense has exceeded expectations. The O-line has over-achieved and has acutally performed well mostly. O-line development is occurring.

The guy at Rutgers is praised for speaking positively — when it goes well. No one was saying it when things sucked at Rutgers. Coach Amato gets ridiculed for speaking positively because it doesn’t go well.

I would want the HC replaced if he bad mouthed the QBs after the spring practice and bad-mouthd all the stuff he is criticised for speaking positively about here on SFN. If that were the case, I would chair the “Fire Chuck Now” committee.
