Rumor Alert: State to Play Basketball Tonight! (Updated 2:15pm)

Did you ever think that you would see and NC State website proclaiming “Thank God for the N&O!”

“The Wolfpack plays its first preseason exhibition game under coach Sidney Lowe and it could be a test. Northern State, a Division II school in Aberdeen, S.D., finished 27-6 last season and returns three starters. The Wolves, from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, played their first exhibition Wednesday at Vanderbilt, losing 98-94 as 6-foot-6 junior Levi Hamilton scored 19 points.

Basketball is approaching, and if it wasn’t for the N&O you may not have known a damn thing about NC State’s exhibition basketball game tonight. You certainly wouldn’t know it if you use the front page GoPack.com for your Wolfpack news. But, SFN has confirmed that the information is true; the Sidney Lowe era does takes another step towards beginning in earnest tonight when NC State plays host to Northern State University in an exhibition game.

GoPack.com doesn’t have a mention of the game anywhere on its front page today. Nowhere. Addtionally:

* The game is not even included in the “Events Calendar” on the front page of the site.

* There is no preview article for the game anywhere on the site.

* The Calendar of Events on the Men’s Basketball subpage does at least mention of the game’s existence.

* Unfortunately, the title of the “Calendar of Events” on the BASKETBALL page says “BASEBALL EVENTS CALENDAR” (Sometimes it hurts to laugh this much)

You would think that the folks over at NC State would exert a little extra effort to detail after the Athletics Department failed to capitalize on promotional opportunities associated with the hiring of Coach Lowe in front of key recruits and most recently severely limited the number of fans who could attend the Red & White Game. But, that conclusion would be far too kind for this crew. (Link to a past entry that will also provide some key links)

If it were anyone else we’d call the omission something like “unbelievable”; but we are accustomed to such oversights at GoPack. This is the kind of “value” that you get when an entity has a monopolistic hold on a market with no chance for competition as what was created when the Athletics Department’s exclusive agreement with Wolfpack Sports Marketing & GoPack.com was ‘interestingly’ extended with no public bid process a few years ago (and simultaneously when “Coach” Lee Fowler was given his own television show by Wolfpack Sports Marketing).

If you want to gear up a little for tonight’s game then Section Six has the quick primer that you need. Additionally, the Charlote Observer has a tiny Q&A with Coach Lowe.

We leave you today by re-emphasizing the suggestion that we made to Coach Lowe a few weeks go. This kind of f*&#-up (along with the Red/White Game) will continue to happen until the Basketball Program realizes that they have to look out for themselves constantly. The MEN’S Basketball program, that is.

Updated 2:15pm
OOPS!!!

Please forgive us for forgetting one other major piece of criticsm that is related to this entire cluster #&^@. We forgot to mention that tonight’s men’s exhibition game – Sidney Lowe’s first ever – has been scheduled for the same night as the major day of Homecoming activities in Raleigh.

At first glance, this would look like a brilliant move to maximize the opportunity for fans to get to experience Homecoming events AND the basketball game except the basketball game has been scheduled to conflict with the end of the Homecoming parade and then the Pack Howl pep rally and concert going on in Reynolds.

    PhiPackaWhacka, thanks.

Good to hear about Horner! Grant is an athlete, hopefully he’ll get better and better. Fells had a bad night I guess.

Best news of all is Lowe working the sidelines.

Did Ferguson play? I’m interested in how he plays at game time, in front of a crowd.

I think the whole team needed a reality check, probably the Head Coach more than anyone, just to see where they are and what they need to work on most. Sounds like conditioning might be at the top of Sidney’s list now.

  2. redfred2 11/03/2006 at 11:02 PM #

    Oh well, it’s a start.

    red,

I can’t recall whether Ferguson played….. I agree with the conditioning comment. If I was Sid, I would have them running wind sprints every day for 30 minutes after practice, followed by a two-mile RUN. Anothe comment: Te Pack looked somewhat detached out there, like they were somewhere else — Maybe that was because there were a lot of youngsters out there. Fells did have a bad night – just couldn’t hit anything.

It will be interesting to see how we do against St. Augs, considering our neighbors down the road just blew them apart the other night.

NC State Head Basketball Coach- Sidney Lowe, still UNDEFEATED.

I told you, but you wouldn’t believe me.

Don`t read too much into a seven-point margin. Maryland won their first exhibition game by 1 point on Wednesday. Syracuse won their game by 6 points last night. Northern State is better than Shaw or St. Aug’s.

Why didn’t Ferguson or the Big Lewandowski play? Interesting to see Bryan Nieman play so much. I’m guessing he’ll get a lot of minutes for a walk-on this year, but hopefully not this many on a regular basis, unless he’s a lot better than I think.

Hell PPW, like all of the talk earlier about the lack lustre kick off of Sidney Lowe’s new career, it probably doesn’t even feel like basketball season to these kids yet. I’ll bet they’re still waiting for something spectacular to happen. They’ll have to create the excitement for themselves, on the basketball court.

I wonder if the folks in the AD and S.I.D. know we won yet? Probably not, I don’t think the bowling alley is closed yet.

    Fells:
He had a tough shooting night, but was great defensively. Only made one shot from the field. His 12 points came from 6/6 free throws and got 6 steels.

    Costner:
Tough shooting night as well, but got 8 rebounds and a block and a steel. He was the only one that I thought seemed tired. He needs to get back in shape sitting out all last year.

    Grant:
26 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks, 1 steel, 6 assists. If he gets injured we are doomed.

McCauley: 19 points, 2 blocks, 4 steels, 6 rebounds. He and grant carried the team.

    Neiman:
Wow, great game comming off the bench. 13 points and good defensive presence.

    Horner:
Got in foul trouble but played well of the bench. 6 points.

    Albritton:
Albritton started the game but then only played 5 minutes. I assume Lowe wanted him to handle the point, but then decided to have Gavin run the point instead. We had quite a few unforced turnovers that were due to either careless or rushed passes. I think the team just needed to settle down a bit and get use to the new tempo. There were definately a lot of nerves on the court, and on the sideline. It was great to see Sidney out there. He looked a bit nervous (said he was in the post game interview). Glad he was able to win his first game tonight. Northern State made some great shots and executed well, but we did not execute well for the most part. It looks like the mistakes should be pretty easy to fix though. I’m optomistic. Hope we have a great game on Tuesday.

    red,

I wonder if Wofford can bring’em enough excitement…. And I mean that Sidney — he looked like he was out there doin’ a new dance 🙂 Just wait until the Big Ten challenge!

  10. redfred2 11/04/2006 at 12:07 AM #

    PPW,

Wofford? The Terriers? The Wolfpack? Nah, not after Lowe has a week to evaluate and adjust, they’ll steamroll Wofford. It’ll take something more than the Terriers have to offer after tonight’s tune up.

Ferguson isn’t eligible to play until December, as per NCAA rules (what the rules are I don’t know, but he won’t be playing until the end of the first semester).

  12. redfred2 11/04/2006 at 10:43 AM #

Gene, that’s right! I forgot all about that, thanks.

I would love to see those rules.

  13. Woof Wolf 11/04/2006 at 4:04 PM #

He committed to Pitt but did not enroll. He entered here for the spring semester. It is treated as a transfer. He has to sit out a year. That requirement will be met at the end of the semester.

  14. redfred2 11/04/2006 at 11:17 PM #

Woof, or anyone for that matter…

Committed, but did not enroll, means what, exactly?

Is this a steadfast NCAA ruling on transfers with no prior exceptions ever granted to other transfers?

Does the Pitt have any involvement in the ruling?

Is there any comparison at all to the Davis/Werner situations?

I am admittedly ignorant in these matters, I’d just like to know.

  15. Woof Wolf 11/05/2006 at 12:30 PM #

He signed and I don’t think Pitt released him. LF released Davis/Werner.

But I don’t know for sure.

  16. redfred2 11/05/2006 at 3:25 PM #

    Woof

Could Pitt have released him? Could he have played at the start of the season if Pitt had not insisted otherwise?

Was it a different scenario than the LF ‘release’ of Werner/Davis? Or was LF entitled, under NCAA rules, to have those kids sit for a season? I’m pretty certain LF could have, if he had not made a foolish promise earlier.

Having leverage, scares the folks in Raleigh to death.

  17. Woof Wolf 11/05/2006 at 5:07 PM #

If we had not released them and they went somewhere else they would have had to sit. They could have appealed but not many win those kind of appeals.

I don’t blame Pitt. If everyone started releasing kids whenever they change their minds, the Letter of Commitment would mean nothing.

  18. redfred2 11/05/2006 at 9:57 PM #

    Woof

“If everyone started releasing kids whenever they change their minds, the Letter of Commitment would mean nothing.”

Hey, it already doesn’t, not at the university I’m concerned about anyway.

I don’t blame Pitt at all. You probably already know what I think occurred with LF, and his handling of the two recruits. The two with signed LOI’s, commited to NC State, recruits that never even had to think seriously again about NC State after Herb Sendek walked.

I’m not even saying that they shouldn’t have been released, EVENTUALLY.

  19. Woof Wolf 11/05/2006 at 10:05 PM #

Yeah, I agree. We should have held onto them at least until Sidney had a chance to talk to them and decide what he thought best. But we are what we are. If nobody has the g,,. er courage to fire anybody maybe we should hire some muscle.
