Rumor Alert: State to Play Basketball Tonight! (Updated 2:15pm)

Did you ever think that you would see and NC State website proclaiming “Thank God for the N&O!”

“The Wolfpack plays its first preseason exhibition game under coach Sidney Lowe and it could be a test. Northern State, a Division II school in Aberdeen, S.D., finished 27-6 last season and returns three starters. The Wolves, from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, played their first exhibition Wednesday at Vanderbilt, losing 98-94 as 6-foot-6 junior Levi Hamilton scored 19 points.

Basketball is approaching, and if it wasn’t for the N&O you may not have known a damn thing about NC State’s exhibition basketball game tonight. You certainly wouldn’t know it if you use the front page GoPack.com for your Wolfpack news. But, SFN has confirmed that the information is true; the Sidney Lowe era does takes another step towards beginning in earnest tonight when NC State plays host to Northern State University in an exhibition game.

GoPack.com doesn’t have a mention of the game anywhere on its front page today. Nowhere. Addtionally:

* The game is not even included in the “Events Calendar” on the front page of the site.

* There is no preview article for the game anywhere on the site.

* The Calendar of Events on the Men’s Basketball subpage does at least mention of the game’s existence.

* Unfortunately, the title of the “Calendar of Events” on the BASKETBALL page says “BASEBALL EVENTS CALENDAR” (Sometimes it hurts to laugh this much)

You would think that the folks over at NC State would exert a little extra effort to detail after the Athletics Department failed to capitalize on promotional opportunities associated with the hiring of Coach Lowe in front of key recruits and most recently severely limited the number of fans who could attend the Red & White Game. But, that conclusion would be far too kind for this crew. (Link to a past entry that will also provide some key links)

If it were anyone else we’d call the omission something like “unbelievable”; but we are accustomed to such oversights at GoPack. This is the kind of “value” that you get when an entity has a monopolistic hold on a market with no chance for competition as what was created when the Athletics Department’s exclusive agreement with Wolfpack Sports Marketing & GoPack.com was ‘interestingly’ extended with no public bid process a few years ago (and simultaneously when “Coach” Lee Fowler was given his own television show by Wolfpack Sports Marketing).

If you want to gear up a little for tonight’s game then Section Six has the quick primer that you need. Additionally, the Charlote Observer has a tiny Q&A with Coach Lowe.

We leave you today by re-emphasizing the suggestion that we made to Coach Lowe a few weeks go. This kind of f*&#-up (along with the Red/White Game) will continue to happen until the Basketball Program realizes that they have to look out for themselves constantly. The MEN’S Basketball program, that is.

Updated 2:15pm
OOPS!!!

Please forgive us for forgetting one other major piece of criticsm that is related to this entire cluster #&^@. We forgot to mention that tonight’s men’s exhibition game – Sidney Lowe’s first ever – has been scheduled for the same night as the major day of Homecoming activities in Raleigh.

At first glance, this would look like a brilliant move to maximize the opportunity for fans to get to experience Homecoming events AND the basketball game except the basketball game has been scheduled to conflict with the end of the Homecoming parade and then the Pack Howl pep rally and concert going on in Reynolds.

I heard on the radio this morning that Hillsborough street will be closed beginning at 5:00pm to allow for a PEP RALLY (for the Football game, I presume) at 6:00pm.

I’m hearing that and thinking “um, there’s a BASKETBALL game at just about the same time…”

I realize its Homecoming, but one would think the Athletic Department would not be so silly as to double book events like this. Then again, it all flows from the top, doesn’t it. Way to go, Lee.

  2. packbackr04 11/03/2006 at 4:56 PM #

way to go Lee. WHere is that picture of Jed Clampett that looks exaclty like Fowleup when you need it. admins, can you post that here for laughs?

  3. packbackr04 11/03/2006 at 4:56 PM #

side by side if possible, for comparitive purposes of course

Its a freaking exhibition basketball game! Honestly how many people on this board would of loved to have attended the homecoming parade and the exh game but can’t because of the scheduling conflict? If it really is a problem for you go to the pep rally at 5:00 take in 20 minutes of the parade (which won’t last much longer anyway) then make the 10 minute drive to ESA and arrive 10 minutes before the tip.

SFN: It is not all about “us” or you the fans. Do we have to spell out the concept of the open market to you? Do we have to spell out the that the way other schools run their programs does matter?

If a RECRUIT or a potential recruit experiences a series of events at Syracuse or UConn or Texas or Carolina or Georgia Tech or WHEREVER that indicate that basketball is more popular, or more professionally organized, or has more institutional support — then why wouldn’t that recruit be turned off from NC State than they otherwise should be?

Why would we willfully (and lazily) project such an incompetent or unprofessional or under-promoted program in the middle of the highly competitive world of college athletics?

the ineptitude of the adminstration of NCSU athletics is mind boggling. I have said many times that if these people had jobs in “the real world” they wouldnt last 1 month. It is scary to think of all the missed opportunites and blunders made by our Athl Dept.
Could anyone on this site, in any of your wide array of jobs get away with this kind of half ass, laxidazicul Bull $hit? My boss would have my scrotum stapled to the floor by noon for this kinda crap. Of course noon, is probably when Lee shows up for work.

    his typical day prob involves….

11 am :wake up and work a 1/4 cup of hand lotion into a fine lather.

12: stroll into the office, make a cup of coffe (with Baileys, cause we all know hes a rumdum)

1pm:break time for 15 mins then he combs that silly as mustache for another 45 mins

    2pm: does his tv show

    3pm: cocktail hour

4pm: time to get off work and go home

“Its a freaking exhibition basketball game!”

Not exactly there t-t-t, this is all brand new. Maybe it wouldn’t be to UNC/Roy or Duke/K, they’ve been there, in front of packed out exhibition crowds before.

But not these guys, this is their first, and a new beginning.

Let’s pray that what evolves from this very humble and unnoticed beginning, and what these coaches and players accomplish in the future, exceeds the effort the university they’re representing has shown in welcoming them here.

If not, the five win prediction seen above, for their upcoming FREAKING FIRST SEASON, is a pipe dream.

  18. redfred2 11/03/2006 at 10:14 PM #

Sorry to jump you there 82grad, but I swear I really don’t want to hear anything even bordering on negative, about this team right now.

  19. 82grad 11/03/2006 at 10:19 PM #

too bad redfred, you’ll hear a lot more negatives this year.

  20. TomCat 11/03/2006 at 10:19 PM #

Anybody catch the Herb Sendek article on the front of USA Today sports today??? Talks a great deal about tenure / track record at State. Good info: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/mensbasketball/bonus/2006-11-02-sendek-ariz-state_x.htm

  21. redfred2 11/03/2006 at 10:26 PM #

Hopefully I’ll be witnessing them for myself starting next Friday.

I know they are lacking, and I also know it’s not their fault. If they’re playing hard and trying to get better, the negative factors that they have no control over, won’t phase me one bit.

  22. Mr O 11/03/2006 at 10:27 PM #

6200 was announced on the radio. Gavin Grant looked great and Courtney Fells couldn’t throw it in the ocean. McCauley also played very well.

  23. redfred2 11/03/2006 at 10:34 PM #

    Tomcat

I stopped reading after about five or six paragraphs. Maybe there is something worth reading at the bottom of the page, but I couldn’t read any further. Thanks anyway.

  24. redfred2 11/03/2006 at 10:38 PM #

    O, thanks.

Overall, what was the feel? Did they look unsure, some what confident, or what?

  25. PhiPackaWhacka 11/03/2006 at 10:47 PM #

I was there for most of the game…… The Pack looked sluggish in comparison to the Northern State Wolves. We also missed seemingly a ton of three-pointers, whereas the Wolves were open way too much and sunk many threes (Herb would’ve loved them). And I’d swear they got more rebounds than us. The Wolves really hustled.

Horner had a good hot streak behind the arc and hit two or three in a row(there’s real promise with that kid), but Grant was the true field commander out there. Costner played like he had lead in his shoes.

Now Sidney was a trip on the sidelines…. he was moving about as if he were in the game himself…. that ‘ole player-coach…..
