Positive Basketball Vibes/Michigan Live Blogging

I don’t really have time for it, but what the hell – I think I’ll try to live blog the Michigan game tonight. How will Sidney Lowe and his Iron Five handle their first true test? I expect us to play with lots of emotion tonight, and hopefully feed off the crowd. We have absolutely no reason to expect a win tonight, but I’ve had an inexplicably positive feeling all day about this game. Stay tuned!

7:07 – Uh oh, we look like shit early.

7:09 – Just getting worse. You can feel the energy seeping out of the building.

7:10 – I like Michigan’s gameplan to attack our thin frontcourt. We have to rebound much better. Our guys are playing hard, though.

7:11 – Another turnover. We are pretty fortunate not to be down 10-12 points, instead of just 5 at the first break.

7:14 – There’s that 10-point lead I mentioned.

7:16 – Oh, dear Lord. Atsur is hurt. We are so screwed.

7:20 – The announcers get in their obligatory dig at our fans for “running off” Sendek. Get over it, already. McCauley picking up some slack down low.

7:23 – This Jimmy Dykes doofus can kiss my ass.

7:25 – Where is Gavin Grant? I know he’s on the floor…but where is he?

7:27 – Look at Horner! Where the hell did that come from? You have to like this kid’s heart.

7:31 – Cool, a Vinny Del Negro sighting!

7:32 – Doing a good job scoring in the paint, despite being undersized.

7:34 – Great pass by Gavin to set up Nieman. Have to like how Nieman didn’t hesitate to let it fly.

7:38 – Pack leads! And Jimmy Dykes still can’t shut his piehole about Sendek. Perhaps he’ll get a chance to call an Arizona State game this year, and attempt to actually blow him.

7:42 – Nobody should ever refer to Brandon Costner as “Big Lazy” ever again. What defensive hustle.

7:45 – McCauley has savvy, and Nieman has balls. He has no fear whatsoever, and is proving that he belongs at this level.

7:47 – Un-fucking-believable. 35-28 Pack at the half, most of it without Engin Atsur. Regardless of the final W/L mark, this team has the potential to be an all-time sentimental favorite.

8:01 – You know, the more I think about it, the madder I get. It’s not fair to Coach Sendek, either. He moved on, to a pretty decent place. 90% of us have also moved on. Turnover is a major part of major college revenue sports. The only people who give a shit about Dykes’ babble are the State fans watching the broadcast, and it pisses us off. Is that a good idea for an ESPN employee?

8:06 – Dykes mentions Sendek. Drink. Oh, and Pack up 12 with Fells at the line. Love the aggression.

8:10 – Ben McCauley is a beast tonight. Costner takes it back inside and draws a foul. The lead is 15, people!

8:12 – Michigan extends the defense, and Fells calmly pops a three. Sixteen!

8:17 – McCauley is a damned magician. Nice two-man game with Grant there.

8:19 – Can you tell that Dykes had his remarks pre-prepared? He has no idea what to say now that we’re playing so well.

8:20 – Fly, Courtney, fly. We’ll try to push it past 20 after a word from our sponsors.

8:25 – Getting nervous…

8:26 – If we lose this game, I will be convinced once and for all that we are cursed. Come on, damn it, these kids deserve a moment in the sun!

8:30 – Still nervous. That damned clock needs to run!

8:32 – Foul on State for standing in the vicinity of the shooter. WTF? Man, does McCauley ever have quick, nimble feet.

8:37 – OK, now I’m beyond nervous. We just can’t lose this one. I can’t take it!

8:40 – Grant and BC come up huge. I can’t say enough how much I love this team.

8:42 – Michigan won’t go away and my heart rate won’t slow down. We’ve got guts. Is that enough?

8:45 – YES!!!

8:46 – I almost don’t care if we don’t win another game all year. Finish this one, and I’ll be satisfied.

8:48 – We’re holding onto this one based on sheer, raw force of will. We have one guy who can really handle the ball, and he’s exhausted.

8:50 – The refs are trying to kill me.

8:51 – One last time – aggression with the pass. Gotta love it. Still not breathing normally.

8:53 – Grant gets mugged – no fucking call! Down to 6, but I think we’re in the double bonus. Doesn’t matter if UM not going to be called for attempted rape.

8:55 – Almost a TO and a BJD heart attack.

8:56 – Oh my God, down to four.

8:57 – More rugby, with no whistle.

8:58 – We are going to take it. Fuck you, Jimmy Dykes!

8:59 – FINAL SCORE – NC State 74, Michigan 67. ACC 1, Big Ten/Eleven 0.

Lock… you didn’t hear it? It was terrible. Right to the very, glorious end. We win a huge game and their very last comments were “where did all these fans come from?” as if we don’t support and then bandwagon. State fans are some of the most loyal in the country. However, we demand something better than just “okay” and “average” and for that we shouldn’t be blamed.

BJD – awesome blog. You tracked my emotions perfectly.

I laughed so hard when I saw “Fuck you Jimmy Dykes!”

Imagine the team you saw for most of this game, minus Nieman, adding
    Hickson
    Smith
    Thomas
    Ferguson
    Degand
    and maybe one more…

Lock, no knowing you didn’t have the game on tv it’s understandable where you’re coming from. What was being said by the announcers, specifically Dykes, was beyond totally unprofessional, it was an all out assault on the fans from the word go. HYPE should issue an apology to the fans for Dykes unprofessionalism. Since that won’t ever happen I’m not going to hold my breath. I’m done with it for tonight. Hell, we just punched Michigan in the mouth and HYPE is totally stunned by what we did. Way to go Sid!! Way to go Pack!!

  4. Texpack 11/27/2006 at 9:18 PM #

That was fun to watch. The full court passes were just awesome. Playing to win, taking the game to the opponent. I had forgotten just how intense Sidney was even though I watched him up close for four years. Ben McCauley was amazing. He is going to be an excellent player by the time Sidney gets through with him.

  5. buttPACKer 11/27/2006 at 9:19 PM #

it was, lock. . i, too, will attest to that. . unbearable,,, well, bearable, since we WON

  6. Lock 11/27/2006 at 9:21 PM #

Yah, I totally believe you guys. It’s ridiculous. I mean, it’s over with. Love him or hate him, it’s over with, and Lowe made it clear tonight it’s HIS turn, period. Hopefully, after we shoved the ESPN announcers’ words back down their throats, this will finally blow over.

  7. Lock 11/27/2006 at 9:24 PM #

For what it’s worth, the game recap/writeup is much, MUCH more positive about our performance.

  8. WolfPup35 11/27/2006 at 9:27 PM #

The action was awesome, Grant did a great job at the point (hope atsur is ok) State should give FSN exclusivity, their announcers don’t flip back and forth in their positive and negative comments based on the score, or whoever they like better. The scumfucks at ESPN have never liked NC State, remember in football..Herbstreit once called Rivers a fraud! In hoops, whoever is calling the game only says one or two positive comments, its in their contract.

Just think what Sid can do with a full bench and players for every position! Blood, guts, teamwork . . . and, oh yes, FUN! Go Pack! I can’t wait until January for those that we add after firwst semister. Nobody better overlook the Pack . And the 2007-2008 season additions . . . well!

    Lock:

If you didn’t hear the crap on TV you have no idea what you are talking about. I don’t think any of us sat down tonight thinking about or wanting to talk about Herb, I know I didn’t.

But they totally trashed State fans and tried to give Herb credit for everything good that ever happened here short of the championships in 83 and 74. They even trashed us for runnung off the football coach and implied that we would never be happy no matter what happend.

It was totally insulting and if I was in charge I would tell ESPN that Jimmy Dykes can never come back in our building. I can’t believe that you got so defensive when you had no idea of what we were responding to.

  11. WestCoast 11/27/2006 at 9:30 PM #

Like I said earler…got to love the hustle. Great job Sidney! Played smart basketball….unlike our football team.

  12. redfred2 11/27/2006 at 9:32 PM #

Costner had some big time threes and maybe even bigger rebounds on the defensive end to shut Michigan down. The one play underneath by Werner was just awesome effort. Grant played great when we were taking it to them. Noonan/Nieman!!! great to see that guy step up. McCauley, just all around excellent play all over the court. They have to be tired and it was a GREAT game!!!

I would say the NBA scouts may be keeping a little closer eye on NCSU because of the play Ben McCauley tonight.

  13. GAWolf 11/27/2006 at 9:36 PM #

I didn’t see Lock get that defensive, Woof. I called him a blind supporter and I don’t know jack about his level of support of Sendek. That was a bad choice of words on my part and he reacted accordingly. We’re all on the same page here and I know if Lock heard the game he would agree.

Funny how people see things differently… I thought Gavin almost blew the game for us at the point and another sees him doing a great job. Nobody is right or wrong but it’s funny about the subjectivity of the performance. Also, I think ESPN Gameday boys have been overly fair to our football program through the last few years with their assessments and predictions. Kirk especially always seemed to me to give us the benefit of the doubt.

  14. HungryLikeTheWolf 11/27/2006 at 9:40 PM #

I love this team!! I was actually laughing and enjoying myself while watching this game. Something I can’t remember ever doing during a Sendek-coached game. The sheer effort that those guys displayed was inspiring. Win or lose, they’re going to be fun to watch this year and in years to come. GO PACK!!

  15. NCStateDud92 11/27/2006 at 9:43 PM #

I was at the gam. so what was up with those announcers?

  16. Jeremy Hyatt 11/27/2006 at 9:45 PM #

wow, impressive win and holding on. i gather exhaustion played a role in allowing the potential comeback. January couldn’t come sooner when Ferg is activated.

My O my is Grant and Fells on the fast break a mighty nice sight. Again, I did not know McCauley was this good, I think he easily fills the role of that Bulgarian player we had. Nice minutes from Horner and Neiman, we will need all hands on deck this season.

I am very impressed with the athleticism, Grant and Fells are Stacey Augmon imposters; long and athletic… just imagine next year with the new additions.

  17. Wolfman300 11/27/2006 at 9:45 PM #

Win or lose, if this team shows the heart and the guts all year long like they did tonight; they will be loved for it. My wife said she was “glad to actually see me smile while watching a NC State game.” I don’t care if they would have lost, that hustle and effort makes me smile and reminds me what I love about NCSU! Go Sid! Go Pack!

  18. class of 74 11/27/2006 at 9:46 PM #

Well some of the posters here need to apologize immediately and profusely to this team and coach. I recall one in particular who said this team would be the worst team in the ACC since GT back in the eighties and would be lucky to win
8 to 10 games! I think that guy graduated with our AD from the same IKB school.

Great win tonight and thanks again Coach Lowe and staff. You make us all proud each and every day.

  19. ushum 11/27/2006 at 9:49 PM #

    GET SOME DYKES…

  20. buttPACKer 11/27/2006 at 9:49 PM #

    ditto.

  21. Astral Rain 11/27/2006 at 9:52 PM #

has anyone considered writing that ESPN Ombudsman guy over the one-sided coverage we’ve gotten in several games?

  22. NCStateDud92 11/27/2006 at 9:55 PM #

I heard on PP that they called us “terrible people” while bashing us about running off Herb, is this true?

  23. EdoubleE 11/27/2006 at 9:56 PM #

“Doesn’t matter if UM not going to be called for attempted rape”

    Good one!!!

  24. WolfPup35 11/27/2006 at 9:57 PM #

those comments just go to the bathroom valet at the headquarters, anyway!

  25. highstick 11/27/2006 at 9:57 PM #

Holy crap, we won??? I just came in from a meeting and started reading this thread. At first I thought we were losing our butts, but we won? Jeez, what a turnaround!

The best move ever made was getting rid of Sendek. Lowe will wipe up the gym floor with any of Herb’s teams after a year or two!

The only thing that could make this day better would be to hear that Fowler’s gone!!!

    Way to go Pack!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
