Positive Basketball Vibes/Michigan Live Blogging

I don’t really have time for it, but what the hell – I think I’ll try to live blog the Michigan game tonight. How will Sidney Lowe and his Iron Five handle their first true test? I expect us to play with lots of emotion tonight, and hopefully feed off the crowd. We have absolutely no reason to expect a win tonight, but I’ve had an inexplicably positive feeling all day about this game. Stay tuned!

7:07 – Uh oh, we look like shit early.

7:09 – Just getting worse. You can feel the energy seeping out of the building.

7:10 – I like Michigan’s gameplan to attack our thin frontcourt. We have to rebound much better. Our guys are playing hard, though.

7:11 – Another turnover. We are pretty fortunate not to be down 10-12 points, instead of just 5 at the first break.

7:14 – There’s that 10-point lead I mentioned.

7:16 – Oh, dear Lord. Atsur is hurt. We are so screwed.

7:20 – The announcers get in their obligatory dig at our fans for “running off” Sendek. Get over it, already. McCauley picking up some slack down low.

7:23 – This Jimmy Dykes doofus can kiss my ass.

7:25 – Where is Gavin Grant? I know he’s on the floor…but where is he?

7:27 – Look at Horner! Where the hell did that come from? You have to like this kid’s heart.

7:31 – Cool, a Vinny Del Negro sighting!

7:32 – Doing a good job scoring in the paint, despite being undersized.

7:34 – Great pass by Gavin to set up Nieman. Have to like how Nieman didn’t hesitate to let it fly.

7:38 – Pack leads! And Jimmy Dykes still can’t shut his piehole about Sendek. Perhaps he’ll get a chance to call an Arizona State game this year, and attempt to actually blow him.

7:42 – Nobody should ever refer to Brandon Costner as “Big Lazy” ever again. What defensive hustle.

7:45 – McCauley has savvy, and Nieman has balls. He has no fear whatsoever, and is proving that he belongs at this level.

7:47 – Un-fucking-believable. 35-28 Pack at the half, most of it without Engin Atsur. Regardless of the final W/L mark, this team has the potential to be an all-time sentimental favorite.

8:01 – You know, the more I think about it, the madder I get. It’s not fair to Coach Sendek, either. He moved on, to a pretty decent place. 90% of us have also moved on. Turnover is a major part of major college revenue sports. The only people who give a shit about Dykes’ babble are the State fans watching the broadcast, and it pisses us off. Is that a good idea for an ESPN employee?

8:06 – Dykes mentions Sendek. Drink. Oh, and Pack up 12 with Fells at the line. Love the aggression.

8:10 – Ben McCauley is a beast tonight. Costner takes it back inside and draws a foul. The lead is 15, people!

8:12 – Michigan extends the defense, and Fells calmly pops a three. Sixteen!

8:17 – McCauley is a damned magician. Nice two-man game with Grant there.

8:19 – Can you tell that Dykes had his remarks pre-prepared? He has no idea what to say now that we’re playing so well.

8:20 – Fly, Courtney, fly. We’ll try to push it past 20 after a word from our sponsors.

8:25 – Getting nervous…

8:26 – If we lose this game, I will be convinced once and for all that we are cursed. Come on, damn it, these kids deserve a moment in the sun!

8:30 – Still nervous. That damned clock needs to run!

8:32 – Foul on State for standing in the vicinity of the shooter. WTF? Man, does McCauley ever have quick, nimble feet.

8:37 – OK, now I’m beyond nervous. We just can’t lose this one. I can’t take it!

8:40 – Grant and BC come up huge. I can’t say enough how much I love this team.

8:42 – Michigan won’t go away and my heart rate won’t slow down. We’ve got guts. Is that enough?

8:45 – YES!!!

8:46 – I almost don’t care if we don’t win another game all year. Finish this one, and I’ll be satisfied.

8:48 – We’re holding onto this one based on sheer, raw force of will. We have one guy who can really handle the ball, and he’s exhausted.

8:50 – The refs are trying to kill me.

8:51 – One last time – aggression with the pass. Gotta love it. Still not breathing normally.

8:53 – Grant gets mugged – no fucking call! Down to 6, but I think we’re in the double bonus. Doesn’t matter if UM not going to be called for attempted rape.

8:55 – Almost a TO and a BJD heart attack.

8:56 – Oh my God, down to four.

8:57 – More rugby, with no whistle.

8:58 – We are going to take it. Fuck you, Jimmy Dykes!

8:59 – FINAL SCORE – NC State 74, Michigan 67. ACC 1, Big Ten/Eleven 0.

Yeah, seriously…ESPN AND certain other groups need to just let the past be the past. I think we deserve one comment (even if I’m in the minority of that) but harping on it is pointless and childish.

But screw that, we just won. Screw the politics, screw the bickering, we won. WE WON.

Congrats to Sid on his first major win. McCauley played like an all-ACC big man! Wow! That’s all I can say.

  4. Lock 11/27/2006 at 8:59 PM #

One game a season does not make…

…but maybe we’ll make the NIT this year after all, yeah?

    GO PACK! BEAUTIFUL!

LOL @ “keep running” – that’s the only running Herb ever did as a coach!

I’m a FAN, and a realist. I’m not gonna claim that State will be playing for the cahmpionship based on this win. BUT, I look for effort and enthusiasm, and Sid has instilled BOTH these traits in the team. It’s already clear that this is a different Pack. If they lose because their legs give out, I would take that EVERY TIME over a team that wasn’t allowed to run. Sid has conneced with these kids. The future is bright…

Even as a blind supporter of Sendek, Lock, you have to admit that these announcers way overstepped their bounds calling out our fans tonight for something that simply isn’t entirely the whole story. He did much less than “just win games.” Regardless, he’s gone. Why harp on that after we win a HUGE game for Sid as our new coach? They went so far to say “Where did all these fans come from?” which smacks of their opinion that our fans don’t support our teams or coaches. Sendek had an eternity in coaching time to take us to the next level and had stalled. He did some good things but the latter years there were unbearable. Simply put, we NEVER won a game like this under Sendek where we came out flat and fought hard late to maintain a lead. Wait… one game I can remember… against Wake.

Can someone hand Dykes a towel to wipe Sendek’s spooge off his lips. What an ass! Living in TN, this was the first chance I’ve had to see this team play. What a fun bunch of kids. I love it. Didn’t know Gainey is on the staff, one of my sentimental favorites. He knows a thing or two about the iron five. Big win, HUGE win for the Pack!

  8. vtpackfan 11/27/2006 at 9:00 PM #

Holy shit, I can’t believe I missed the whole game. We’re packing up to move back to Raleigh and I got so f-ing busy I forgot to turn on the tube.

  9. Lunatic Fringe 11/27/2006 at 9:01 PM #

Man it is nice to see that much heart, energy, & scrappiness from a NCSU team. Great job to players, coaching staff, and fans.

  10. Dan 11/27/2006 at 9:03 PM #

Wow. We got away with one there. Coach Lowe was obviously illegally influencing the game from the bench as they adjusted to what Michigan was doing both on offense and defense.

I know that was made illegal like 10 years ago.

    Go Pack!

If you go to the ESPN site for the game they have two photos. 1 photo of a Grant shot getting rejected & 1 of a Mich player making a shot. I’m sorry but who won the game…if you’re only going to show 2 pictures shouldn’t at least 1 be a positive shot of the team that won? I’m not a conspircy theorist…but…

  12. Lock 11/27/2006 at 9:04 PM #

GA: If you’ll notice, I am agreeing. Supporter or detractor, the past is the past. ESPN AND members of this blog are unable to let it go. And I’d say ‘blind’ is a bit unfair considering I have acknowledged many of the faults (again, if you’d notice).

But I do agree. I have a hard time recalling a game comparable during our last coaching era (though that’s not the first time I’ve said this today).

  13. vtpackfan 11/27/2006 at 9:05 PM #

Congrats Sid, and how bout’ these guys ole Sendek recruited? 5-0 and ready to go!

  14. redfred2 11/27/2006 at 9:06 PM #

Wasn’t McCauley available to play basketball for NC State University last season?

Didn’t he have a 2 point average per game?

    I thought so.

  15. GAWolf 11/27/2006 at 9:06 PM #

Sorry, Lock. I wrote that and sent it after your last post. Nonetheless, I’m not attacking you, just attacking those smucks. I’m completely picking up what you’re putting down. Again, sorry.

  16. Lock 11/27/2006 at 9:07 PM #

Seriously. Sendek, thanks for the kids. Lowe, thanks for the in-game adjustments and passion.

The future looks bright, on that I think we can all agree.

  17. Lock 11/27/2006 at 9:09 PM #

GA: Greatly appreciate it man, and sorry for my reply. Glad we’re on the same wavelength here. Happens sometimes in a message-board setup, you know? No hard feelings!

Lock, I wasn’t going to mention anything about Sendek but after 5 comments of dragging us the fans through the mud over sendek I had enough and had to call out Dykes. I don’t think anyone here tonight wasn’t willing to let it go, which is a hell of a lot more than I can say about Dykes and HYPE.

  19. WolfPup35 11/27/2006 at 9:11 PM #

Did anyone else notice how the ‘Pack got the lead by playing a slower pace and playing inside-outside-inside ball?? Did any of that look a bit familiar?? Sid knows what the fuck he’s doing, all right. How about that zone—moving around (even through moving screens) and staying in the shooters face! Great defense, awesome hustle! 12th in the ACC?? MY IRISH ASS!!

  20. harrisek 11/27/2006 at 9:12 PM #

A continuation of ESPN’s assault against State. What’s the best weapon against it? A WIN!!! IN YOUR FACE DYKES!!!

  21. Lock 11/27/2006 at 9:12 PM #

1.21: Hey, I can totally understand that. I couldn’t get the ESPN2 broadcast, but if what everybody says is close to the truth, they’re being really unfair. It cuts both ways, beating the dead horse. Dykes and Doyell…separated at birth?

  22. GAWolf 11/27/2006 at 9:12 PM #

No, no. Blind was too strong. Bad choice of words. My fault.

Way to go pack! Glad I didn’t go to the game afterall… starting to wonder if this means I can’t go to ANY games this season????

  23. tractor57 11/27/2006 at 9:13 PM #

Not always the prettiest game but there was a lot of effort out there tonight and the ESPN announcers sure showed their bias (as did Digger Phelps) – I remember Digger bringing his Notre Dame teams to Reynolds in the late ’70’s (with Kelly Tri-puke-a). Every time Digger would stand up during the games the crowd would start chanting “Sit Digger, Sit”. “Sit Digger, Sit”. When he finally would sit down it was “Good boy, Digger; Good boy!” He’s never liked State since that time (lost a few games in Reynolds also).
A really good college basketball game; too bad the announcers missed a lot of it talking about all Herb did is just win (if he “just won” he would still be the coach at NCSU).

  24. WolfPup35 11/27/2006 at 9:14 PM #

Oh, and by the way….ESPN announcers have one requirement….a mouth big enough to shove both feet into. OK, OK ….TWO requirements..they also have to be completely and utterly STUPID (Example:Stuart Scott)

  25. redfred2 11/27/2006 at 9:14 PM #

I’ll back off on the Sendek thing too. It’s just so hard to believe that “professional” announcers can trash a program when what we were all talking about…

WAS JUST PROVEN ON THE BASKETBALL COURT RIGHT BEFORE THEIR VERY EYES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
