Positive Basketball Vibes/Michigan Live Blogging

I don’t really have time for it, but what the hell – I think I’ll try to live blog the Michigan game tonight. How will Sidney Lowe and his Iron Five handle their first true test? I expect us to play with lots of emotion tonight, and hopefully feed off the crowd. We have absolutely no reason to expect a win tonight, but I’ve had an inexplicably positive feeling all day about this game. Stay tuned!

7:07 – Uh oh, we look like shit early.

7:09 – Just getting worse. You can feel the energy seeping out of the building.

7:10 – I like Michigan’s gameplan to attack our thin frontcourt. We have to rebound much better. Our guys are playing hard, though.

7:11 – Another turnover. We are pretty fortunate not to be down 10-12 points, instead of just 5 at the first break.

7:14 – There’s that 10-point lead I mentioned.

7:16 – Oh, dear Lord. Atsur is hurt. We are so screwed.

7:20 – The announcers get in their obligatory dig at our fans for “running off” Sendek. Get over it, already. McCauley picking up some slack down low.

7:23 – This Jimmy Dykes doofus can kiss my ass.

7:25 – Where is Gavin Grant? I know he’s on the floor…but where is he?

7:27 – Look at Horner! Where the hell did that come from? You have to like this kid’s heart.

7:31 – Cool, a Vinny Del Negro sighting!

7:32 – Doing a good job scoring in the paint, despite being undersized.

7:34 – Great pass by Gavin to set up Nieman. Have to like how Nieman didn’t hesitate to let it fly.

7:38 – Pack leads! And Jimmy Dykes still can’t shut his piehole about Sendek. Perhaps he’ll get a chance to call an Arizona State game this year, and attempt to actually blow him.

7:42 – Nobody should ever refer to Brandon Costner as “Big Lazy” ever again. What defensive hustle.

7:45 – McCauley has savvy, and Nieman has balls. He has no fear whatsoever, and is proving that he belongs at this level.

7:47 – Un-fucking-believable. 35-28 Pack at the half, most of it without Engin Atsur. Regardless of the final W/L mark, this team has the potential to be an all-time sentimental favorite.

8:01 – You know, the more I think about it, the madder I get. It’s not fair to Coach Sendek, either. He moved on, to a pretty decent place. 90% of us have also moved on. Turnover is a major part of major college revenue sports. The only people who give a shit about Dykes’ babble are the State fans watching the broadcast, and it pisses us off. Is that a good idea for an ESPN employee?

8:06 – Dykes mentions Sendek. Drink. Oh, and Pack up 12 with Fells at the line. Love the aggression.

8:10 – Ben McCauley is a beast tonight. Costner takes it back inside and draws a foul. The lead is 15, people!

8:12 – Michigan extends the defense, and Fells calmly pops a three. Sixteen!

8:17 – McCauley is a damned magician. Nice two-man game with Grant there.

8:19 – Can you tell that Dykes had his remarks pre-prepared? He has no idea what to say now that we’re playing so well.

8:20 – Fly, Courtney, fly. We’ll try to push it past 20 after a word from our sponsors.

8:25 – Getting nervous…

8:26 – If we lose this game, I will be convinced once and for all that we are cursed. Come on, damn it, these kids deserve a moment in the sun!

8:30 – Still nervous. That damned clock needs to run!

8:32 – Foul on State for standing in the vicinity of the shooter. WTF? Man, does McCauley ever have quick, nimble feet.

8:37 – OK, now I’m beyond nervous. We just can’t lose this one. I can’t take it!

8:40 – Grant and BC come up huge. I can’t say enough how much I love this team.

8:42 – Michigan won’t go away and my heart rate won’t slow down. We’ve got guts. Is that enough?

8:45 – YES!!!

8:46 – I almost don’t care if we don’t win another game all year. Finish this one, and I’ll be satisfied.

8:48 – We’re holding onto this one based on sheer, raw force of will. We have one guy who can really handle the ball, and he’s exhausted.

8:50 – The refs are trying to kill me.

8:51 – One last time – aggression with the pass. Gotta love it. Still not breathing normally.

8:53 – Grant gets mugged – no fucking call! Down to 6, but I think we’re in the double bonus. Doesn’t matter if UM not going to be called for attempted rape.

8:55 – Almost a TO and a BJD heart attack.

8:56 – Oh my God, down to four.

8:57 – More rugby, with no whistle.

8:58 – We are going to take it. Fuck you, Jimmy Dykes!

8:59 – FINAL SCORE – NC State 74, Michigan 67. ACC 1, Big Ten/Eleven 0.

I agree Fred, when you look at the expectations, the player limitations, and lack of experience, this was as big as any win we’ve had away from the tournament since V days. With all the BS the football season brought on, damn this felt good, and these kids are great! Heart and heady play, and flair!!! They were fun to watch, maddening at times, but it is to be expected. Sid did a good job of switching defenses, I saw a packed in two three a lot of the night, a 3-2 for a couple of trips, and man sprinkled in to break rhythm. Sid is a good game coach. McCauley is a star in the making, he was easily the best man on the floor tonight. Costner is a glue guy, and Horner and Nieman have heart. Gavin was great, turnovers are gonna happen, its the pushin the ball with less than 3 minutes and a shrinking lead that drives me nuts. Really, I think he just ran oiut of gas there at the end, and we had fought hard enough it didn’t cost us the game. Bart and Horner have got to be able spell Costner and McCauley, even though they are learners. All in all I couldn’t be happier with the effort, and a win is like gravy.

To say tonight was encouraging is to say water is merely moist. I am trying not to get to far ahead of myself, cuz the lack of depth will almost certainly cost us some games. But with some of our conference cousins struggling, things could get interesting. Five days to rest the legs, and hopefully we can break in UVa’s new crib for ’em.

justaguy – I just noticed that while looking at ESPN.com. Deleware St. also gave Wisconsin a great fight earlier this year. Looks like our schedule might not have been so full of cupcakes as it seemed at a glance. I’m definitely not getting my hopes up too much for this season, and I still don’t think we’ll be able to contend night-in and night-out in the ACC with such a short bench, but it looks like we’ll be better than I ever dreamed we would be. A win like this without Engin is nothing short of amazing.

    Some thoughts on the game:

Don’t be too critical of Gavin. He played the entire game and was great for most of it. 3 of his 7 turnovers came in those closing minutes (the dodgy hooking call, foot touching the end line, and that terrible pass), and he played the whole game out of position. I’ll take 15 and 7 from him under those circumstances. He also went 8-9 from the charity stripe when everyone else was mediocre. Lastly, his full court lead pass to McCauley was a thing of beauty, you won’t see much better than that.

Costner keeps getting better and better as he gets more comfortable and works the kinks out from sitting out last year. He’s a tremendous talent. Once he learns to be a bit smarter on defense he could be an absolutely dominant defensive player.

Nothing else to say about Big Ben that hasn’t been said. He’s a beast.

Fells is the only player who has been kind of disappointing so far this year. I feel like he should be much better as an offensive player. He’s too content to shoot from the perimeter (8 of his 12 FG attempts) when he’s very capable of driving the ball to the rim on almost anyone. He’s money when he gets his feet set though, beautiful stroke.

Great game, makes me excited about the season. I just hope Engin is healthy for the next game, because without him on Singletary, I don’t think we have much hope.

Woof: Dunno if you’ll read this, but if you do, I can’t believe you got so offensive when you either 1) didn’t read everything I wrote or 2) only read it how you wanted to. I was agreeing that we did not deserve the treatment we were getting from the ESPN reporters. I’m not surprised by it, and I understood quite clearly what everybody was talking about. All I was saying was it’s time to move on, and it’s highly unprofessional of ESPN’s broadcasters to act in such a manner. That BOTH sides need to let it go.

Just like I do (yah, I do realize that).

    And just like you do.

And that, for the love of God, let’s just enjoy an amazing win.

  4. Wolfpack4ever 11/28/2006 at 2:41 AM #

Try this on for size, if we were 2nd or 3rd in conference and elite 8 in the tournament last year, who would be saying stuff like — we won’t be able to contend night-in and night-out in the ACC. No we’d be lickin’ our chops waiting to get a shot at the Holes and Dookies. The players we have are the ones who other good coaches like Sid would take and beat ole what’s his name with OR take ole what’s his name’s players and beat ours with ole what’s his name coaching them.

Those guys dressing out in the Red and White ain’t dogs, they are Wolves who come with pretty good pedigrees. I think we are all being pessimistic out of habit engrained in us over the last ten years. We ain’t gonna win ’em all but we are gonna win a bunch we ain’t suppose to win at this stage of the game.

Let’s have the thoughts we have (which we can’t help but having as thoughts are automatic and often survival related) and then let go of them. We may not have any control over having the thoughts we have, but we do have control over the thinking thoughts. And we for sure have control over what we put on loud-speaker and whqata we write. As Jimmie V once said to Sam Esposito, “Think a good thought.” It can’t hurt. Willfully thinking a good thought is different from having whatever thoughts our survival brain supplies us with.

“Think a good thought” and create a Karma in SFN that let’s our boys kick some UNX ass.

    Go State!

bash bash bash, give it a rest already. Like Lock said, move on, the man’s gone.

Regardless of where this team finished last year, not much would be expected this year. We’re playing 6 scholarship players for goodness sake (Neiman doesn’t really count as a scholarship guy). Nobody is questioning the guys out there playing. The starting 5 are all ACC caliber players, and we have a few potential All-ACC studs. However, we have no bench, so those skilled guys all have to play 35 minutes a night and not get into foul trouble. You absolutely cannot contend night-in and night-out in the ACC like that, it’s just too tough a conference. How is this team going to deal with a succession of games against good opponents? We don’t know yet. How are they going to deal with road games? We don’t know. The next 2 games will tell us a lot about how far this team can go. This was a great win and a very positive sign for us, but lets stop trying to play the disrespect card. Everyone hasn’t been pessimistic about this team, they’ve been realistic. If this team finisheds above 9th in the ACC it would be a miracle and Sid would deserve CotY on the spot. I’m convinced now after this game that miracle could happen, but it would still be a miracle.

  6. wayofthemaster 11/28/2006 at 3:44 AM #

I know we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves and raise expectations all of a sudden. After all it’s easy to get too high after a big win like this one… BUT… Is it possible this team could be 12-2 when it opens up the real stretch of conference play January 6th against Boston College at home. I’m trying real hard to keep my expectations level… BUT… wouldn’t a cinderella season be great!

  7. NCStateDud92 11/28/2006 at 6:23 AM #

No matter how we finish, that was the most fun I have had at a basketball game in a long time.

  8. graywolf 11/28/2006 at 7:01 AM #

Its really fun to watch a basketball game again. Great team effort, great coaching by Sidney Lowe, Monty Towe and staff. I am really hopeful for the future of basketball at NC State.

  9. Texpack 11/28/2006 at 7:09 AM #

The move to the point by Grant showed a lot of guts on his part. He can and will get better. The mistakes he made were exactly the ones you’d expect from a 2-3 playing the point. Sidney will make him better by the next game.

  10. 82grad 11/28/2006 at 7:48 AM #

keep your heads level or you’ll end up taking another fall. michigan is not very good, amaker is a joke of a coach. his team can’t shoot but they continued to fire up 3’s?

  11. GAWolf 11/28/2006 at 7:59 AM #

I did my part this morning and sent ESPN this email:

Jimmy Dykes owes the fans of NC State and everyone else involved with our University an apology. His statements during last nights game were completely unprofessional and out-of-line. He went so far as hinting that our fans are responsible for Coach Yow’s unfortunate battle with cancer. That’s a ridiculous bit of journalism. If he never calls another Wolfpack game it will be too soon. A public apology is in order for him to maintain any credibility in his trade.

    Thank you for your time.

  12. Woof Wolf 11/28/2006 at 8:20 AM #

I sent them a message too. I added Dykes to my don’t listen to list.

Great basketball game, I really enjoyed it, especially after I hit “Mute.”

  13. Clarksa 11/28/2006 at 8:26 AM #

I sent them a polite little note as well. I asked them to focus on our current staff (2 National Champions, 1 former HC, 1 bad-ass recruiter), and to focus on the future players that Coach Lowe and company have recruited despite being on the job since July 1st.

  14. waxhaw 11/28/2006 at 8:33 AM #

Michigan may not be very good but I bet they are better than at least 3-5 ACC teams. This was a great win. It’s the type of win that can solidify an NIT run and possible lead towards an NCAA bubble.

Atsur has to get and stay healthy. Unfortunately, it seems like he will be plagued all year. He is probably worn out.

  15. redfred2 11/28/2006 at 10:46 AM #

Good post, and very wise words from ^xphoenix87!!!

“Everyone hasn’t been pessimistic about this team, they’ve been realistic. If this team finisheds above 9th in the ACC it would be a miracle and Sid would deserve CotY on the spot. I’m convinced now after this game that miracle could happen, but it would still be a miracle.”

It seems some people can’t resist going from gloom and doom to final four potential in the blink of an eye. It happened in football after the early OOC losses, then the BC and FSU wins. Next thing we’re seeing posted is that all of a sudden we’re BCS hopefuls.

Many of us have said that these same kids on our roster from last year would be better and unrecognizable under Sidney Lowe. That is showing to be true. Last night was just ONE unbelievable effort and a sure sign of things to come. But let’s try to be a little more level headed and stop looking ahead so damn much. At this point all of the talk about post season NIT/NCAA tournament hopes or expectations is totally childish.

If you are wondering where announcers like those two clowns last night, get their ideas and ammo from, or why the NCSU fanbase gets abused and labelled all of the time, look no further than the people predicting W/L’s totals and possible pre season play, just five games into this long season.

Comments from the game…which I ATTENDED and enjoyed GREATLY….

The Ref’s seem to be on UM’s traveling squad….what a poorly called game.

Sounds like ESPN is living up to it’s reputation….for all of you who wanted Steve Lavin(?) as our coach….hope you are doing well in your rehab…unfortunately, the damage to the brain cells is IRREVERSEABLE.

Sitting in the CC and enjoying the food and watching the fans….what…a CELEBRITY SITING….or maybe a politician. I see some tall, gray haired guy walking up and down in front of the students and pep band…shaking hands with everyone. Maybe he is running for President (do you remember John Edwards’ two STRUTS in the RBC)…now he working his way up press row…I HOPE that is not FUF (IKB), he should be out looking for a GREAT FB Coach…maybe even playing with his Play Station3…Madden’s game…trying to LEARN about FB….

Watched a three point shot in the first half…it went almost to the top of the backboard…then dropped in. I think that there is Pasta sauce on the ball…JV’s Ghost tapped it down through the net….The GHOST was happy tonight…we have everyone’s name on the court except the V’s…The GHOST may turn on us…

SL takes time out and then has a “Chat” with one of the officials….He talked longer to that ref than HS did ALL LAST YEAR….hey the calls improved…

Really a treat to see the intro with the ’74 & ’83 teams…also, the DD Hungry Like A Wolf music is GREAT after the game…Did SL have anyting to do with this? Will we play it IF we lose?

Man…the RBC has never been like this before…finally….LOWE…Your are the MAN…hope all the UNX and DOOK fans are reading this….we may not win everytime and we may not beat them…but NCSU BB is BACK and the LOWE man is the Leader of the PACK…

If any of you can confirm my siting of FUF….I would appreciate it. I started to paint my white sneaks RED, put on my Gator Bowl RED sunglasses, and walk around with a black arm band. I confess to be a Chuck Hugger (RAL BLOG)…and regret he is gone…but the deed is done….with NO CLASS….read the posts about the prominent backer (BIG $$) who boasted at the game with his prime seats on the 50 that “Take heart…CTC will be fired tomorrow….” What a way to treat a man who did bleed R&W for us…He deserved better than an emailed press release….I hope he laughs EVERY month when his checks are deposited from NCSU and the WPC…I wish that someone had fired me and given me a 1.2KK $$ Severance….CTC…you have the last laugh for the next 37 months….

GO PACK….Thank GOD FOR BB….maybe we will have FB in my lifetime….

  17. c6by66 11/28/2006 at 2:21 PM #

PS…I checked several of the Pre-Season Polls….UM was ranked #47….I guess that Digger has his own polling data…and WE (the Pack) were ranked #106…We MAY not make the NCAA this year…but I like our spirit and our gutiness…maybe one of the Leaders of the ’83 Cardiac Pack will bring back a LITTLE of the magic in 2007…24 YEARS is a LONG TIME…

  18. 82grad 11/28/2006 at 2:41 PM #

michigan better than 3-5 ACC teams? i doubt that. we (ACC) wax the big ten every year.

  19. NCSUownzJoo 11/28/2006 at 4:06 PM #

    Charger,
You don’t have the SLIGHTEST idea of what you’re talking about. He wasn’t lazy or selfish. He’s not a point guard genius. That’s not his position and he’s still learning while getting a one man full court press the entire game. He played 37 minutes after playing 39 minutes the last 4 games. He was TIRED! You sit here and praise McCauley, which he should be, but you bash Grant when you have no idea what you’re talking about. McCauley didn’t have to have a one man full court press on him the ENTIRE night and have to bring the ball up the floor every single time. Of course he’s not going to be as tired as Grant. None of the mistakes you pointed out occured before 4 minutes left in the game. You’ve obviously never played competitive basketball before if you think he should just be fresh and playing great when he’s played 37 minutes and is playing out of position. All of those problems occured because he was tired and didn’t have the legs at the time. Get a clue before you start bashing our players.
