This has already been an interesting week in college football with Rutgers upset of Louisville. While many people will surely jump on the Rutgers bandwagon now, it’s simply not going to happen. Even if Rutgers wins at West Virginia, which is highly unlikely, they won’t, and shouldn’t, make the National Title Game. Greg Schiano should win coach of the year. He’s done as much as any coach in the country, but Rutgers just doesn’t have the talent to be considered an elite team yet.
Saturday offers perhaps the most TV games of interest of any week of the season. While it only offers a few high profile match-ups, at least a dozen games have interesting storylines.
The big ones are Tennessee vs. Arkansas (huge SEC West implications) and Oregon vs. USC (critical Pac 10 game).
In the SEC, despite Georgia’s recent woes, the UGA/Auburn game is always a battle. Likewise for the Alabama/LSU game. But perhaps the most interesting: Spurrier returns to Gainesville as head coach of the Cocks for the first time.
In the ACC, the parity this year makes every game potentially exciting. Both the Pack and Clemson look to stop the bleeding. Tech looks to strengthen its hold on the Coastal with a win over UNC. Miami/Maryland and even more so FSU/Wake offer games where the perennial favorite is struggling this year, and the traditional easy win is playing like a favorite. Then there’s Duke looking to break the streak against BC – not likely, but after close losses to Wake, Bama, and Miami, who knows?
Nebraska/Texas A&M should also be a good game. With nothing to lose, Texas Tech will be airing it out against OU. In the Pac 10, you never know what’s going to happen. Cal/Arizona could surprise.
Finally, on 10:15, Boise State plays the toughest remaining opponent on its schedule, San Jose St. – shouldn’t really be much of a contest.
