No Contract For Neinas? Say It Ain’t So, “Coach”

I may be overreacting, but a comment reported in today’s News & Observer causes some real concern about the coaching search.

NC State Athletic Director Lee Fowler, who stumblebummed through the Sidney Lowe hiring some months back, told the newspaper that, “[h]e has talked with Chuck Neinas, a Colorado-based headhunter who helped North Carolina hire Butch Davis, about the search but said there was no contract with Neinas.”

Now, while this is not specifically contrary to Fowler’s previous announcement that NC State would use a “search firm” for the hire, it seems odd, to say the least, that one would employ a search firm without a contract for that firm’s work.

Odder still is the recent report from the Charlotte Observer on the matter, which suggests a more concrete role for Nienas in the search:

Unlike the school’s basketball search, which athletics director Lee Fowler conducted on his own, N.C. State will use a consultant. Chuck Neinas of Neinas Sports Services in Colorado, who helped North Carolina hire Davis, will help Fowler gauge the interest of coaches and negotiate.

Perhaps, as a lawyer, I am hung up on the term “contract.” But let’s face it: most fans anticipated (and expected) that Fowler would not take the lead in this search given the university’s public humiliation the last time Fowler tried to hire a major coach. And in the Lowe case “Coach” Fowler was dealing with a sport he’d actually played and coached.

A scenario where Neinas merely acts as a sounding board for Fowler suggests a far more significant decision-making role for “Coach” than I am comfortable with. Simply put, there is nothing about Fowler’s work last time around – nor, in fact, in general – that makes one feel warm and cozy at the thought of him calling the shots for such an important hire.

And I’m not alone in that opinion. Even discounting the “lunatic fringe” (translation: loyal fans and alumni) members who openly concur that the prospect of Fowler running this search gives them the willies, consider today’s comment from, of all sources, Al Myatt of Bonesville.com:

Given the spectacle of N.C. State’s recent venture in hiring a basketball coach, Wolfpack athletic director Lee Fowler might do well to put Neinas on his speed dial as a successor to Chuck Amato is sought. Had that phone call been made after Herb Sendek left for Arizona State, the Pack would have been saved the suspense and agony of missing on high profile types such as John Calipari of Memphis and Rick Barnes of Texas.

Myatt also noted with approval how UNC’s Dick Baddour learned his lesson after the Beamer and Roy Williams fiascos – resulting in the Butch Davis home run. In contrast, there’s more than a whiff of evidence that Fowler still doesn’t get it; the public rejection of NC State feelers by god-candidate Bill Cowher has a depressingly familiar similarity to the Barnes turndown earlier in the year.

And of course, “Coach” being “Coach,” Fowler just took time out to blather to The Technician that other than finding a new football coach, it’s those dratted Internet fans that are – are you ready for this? – the biggest challenge for NC State athletics:

But other than that, the biggest challenge? It’s probably the message boards on the Internet. There is so much negative stuff coming off the boards, and I think that drives the newspapers. Then the papers are constantly chasing stuff that’s being talked about on the Internet. But I think that’s the biggest challenge facing all ADs.

There are so many people on the Internet, and you never know who they are. You don’t know if they are affiliated with N.C. State in any way.

Listen up, “Coach,” and listen well: I’m “affiliated” with NC State through the degree that hangs on my wall, among other items – an affiliation which, I note in passing, you lack. And based solely on your past performance, I don’t believe you are the best person to take the lead on this coaching search.

One cascade of national humiliation is quite enough, thank you.

I am also an NCSU grad and an Executive Recruiter with 15 years experience. Why would anyone in the search business be willing to give LF “free” advice on a search when a contrat is not in place. The Fee is a small price to pay when considering all at this at stake.

It seems that everyone is all upset at not knowing what Lee is getting accomplished in this coaching search. Well, in my opinion, he did learn some things from the BB search that are resulting in a lot less news / rumors. He is actually taking these first few days to locate all the good lunch buffets and take-out restaurants in Pittsburgh, Annapolis, Baton Rouge, Nashville, Fayetteville and Timbuktu. That takes some time!!! After all, what’s more important – the hire or keeping his weight up? I mean, he doesn’t have much to hold his pants up as it is. Anyways, after the BB search fiasco, he is probably just waiting for the right candidate to fall into his lap. He might as well be eating when that happens.

FOZ… where are they stayin’? Is that what downtown needs to truly make it easy on the eyes?

Just out of curiosity, why do we wish a pox on Jim Donnan house?

In case any of you guys are wondering why this site and RAWFS is very slow, the problem appears to be an upstream switch at our mutual service provider. I’ve been pulling my hair out trying to figure it out and then finally took my own advice and called their Helpdesk.

    Just so y’all would know.

    Your friendly server admin,
    Charles

Thanks for everything you both do RAWFS and SFN. You both provide a world-class service to wolfpack fans.

Why would you want Donnan…I believe that we should recall that he was looking at the UNC job a few years ago. Is he a true Wolfpack if he would be their head coach?

    Just a question

Which is why Neines is in the paper making public comments about us? Or why Fowler is giving the N&O quotes? Fowler is a media whore. He cant help himself.

    ^^

In case anyone doesn’t know it, this site owes a tremendous THANK YOU to the friendly webserver admin.

I am glad folks liked the column, too. Note that RAWFS also has an excellent piece on this matter. I feel like Charles and I showed up at a party wearing the same suit.

I work for a “search” firm. We won’t lift a pencil unless we have a signed agreement.

Can someone provide detail on why Donnan is not wanted in Raleigh?

  13. for2n8son 11/30/2006 at 2:50 PM #

^I’m neither for or against him. I just don’t know what he has done or said to offend people.

  14. PapaJohn 11/30/2006 at 2:53 PM #

Well said ’96, excellent advice we should all heed …
“…you guys need to lighten up. The Cowher situation was inevitable and the media was going to ask him about the position no matter what. So basically nothing has happened so far, I really don’t think we’ll get denied in public this time (Cowher does not count).

The media did not like Amato and he got a fair shake, so there is no backlash. Our facilities, LTR sales, BCS conf., and a weak ACC make us one of the most attractive jobs out there. I think we’ll get a good hire with no pain, only time will tell…”

I’d feel better with a search firm, but we don’t know that there isn’t one. The lack of information is exactly the way it should happen. Let’s give it a couple of weeks before we hit the ledge…

Search Firm? What Search Firm? I dont know what ur talking about.

  16. Wolf-n-Atl 11/30/2006 at 2:58 PM #

Maybe we can send in a letter of dissatisfaction directly to LF’s office and all sign it with our REAL NAMES and GRADUATION YEAR so he realizes that we aren’t ANONYMOUS lurkers on the message boards.

“I’d feel better with a search firm, but we don’t know that there isn’t one.”

We don’t know there IS one, either. And that is what has me concerned.

Fowler is simply not competent to handle this search on his own. It’s that simple and that obvious.

Thanks RAWFS & SFN…I am a true fan to you and the Pack! Now for some of the folks that think we should all hold hands and wait for the white smoke to come out of the bell tower…maybe we have it wrong….hell, I don’t care if we have it wrong but I do care we get it right (finding a new quality FB Coach)…the best thing about a quality BLOG like this is to bounce around ideas and talk a litte trash…you know the old saying…”I can talk about my kids but know one else can…” and that is how I think of N.C. State…as my kids and why so many of us get so ticked when a UNX fan starts talking about our program. Lee Fowler did a horrible job with the BB coaching search and like a lucky gambler he won some money in getting Coach Lowe but I don’t want LF to think he can do it again…because he just can’t and the history shows it…Neinas may not be the answer but there are a ton of professionals that would love to assist and we need to make sure NOW more than ever that Lee let’s a professional take the lead. Step aside Lee or step down. GO PACK!

I’m not outraged by Cowher’s public statements. It was all over the national news and a public statement had to be made to appease the press.
I’m not surprised by the search firm issue either. The presser at Amato’s firing stated we would use a search consultant so I think we still will. There are still many logical reasons for the “no contract” status at this point in time.

However, I AM outraged at Lee Fowler’s public disparagement of the “internet fans”. How can this man continually belittle tried-and-true Wolfpack fans and continue to hold his job as Director of Atheletics? If he seriously considers the internet THE biggest challege, then clearly the man is incompetent and incapable of fulfilling the requirements of his job.

I don’t know a lot about the stuff that went on with Donnan in North Carolina, because I’ve lived in Georgia since the mid-seventies and didn’t have a good information pipeline until I found you guys earlier this year. But I do know a little of what happened down here.

At Marshall Donnan won 11 or 12 games in each of his last five seasons, a 1AA championship and the team won the championship again the year after he left and then moved up to 1A. While he was OC at Oklahoma in the 80’s they had three straight 11-1 seasons including a National Championship in 1985 and a loss to National Champion Miami in the Orange bowl in 87.

Donnan’s overall record at Georgia was 40-19. That is the second highest winning percentage, behind Vince Dooley, at Georgia since 1922. He lost one game to South Carolina and all the rest of his losses were to Florida, Tennessee, Auburn and Georgia Tech. During the five years he was there both Florida and Tennessee won National Championships and Tech was at the peak of the George O’Leary years. The last four years he was there Georgia won bowl games and finished in the top twenty every year. His teams broke long losing streaks with Tennessee and Florida, but loss to Tech four years in a row.

He had a couple of highly rated recruits at Georgia that signed but did not qualify. There was some talk about improprieties and also some off the field criminal incidents with one or two players. He apparently had some Chuck type problems: ego, stubbornness, and the media didn’t like him. I would hope the experience at ESPN would have helped with that. The big upsides are great recruiter and offensive guru.

He was fired by the new egomaniacal University President, Michael Adams, over the objection of AD Vince Dooley. Three years later Adams refused to renew Dooley’s contract and he retired. That caused uproar among the boosters and some of them tried to get Adams fired. Herschel Walker stopped his assistance in fund raising activities and he and several others cut way back on or cancelled contributions.

I don’t know why he has been out of coaching the last five years. I do know there are personality issues, but his on the field record seems to be better than anyone else on our radar.

I’m not advocating we hire him but would like to know why some of you think he is a non-qualifier.

Things get worse the Charlotte Observe editoral today blasts the UNC BOG and Mr. Bowles for violating its own rules to hire Butch Davis and Roy Williams in the past. Amazing the timing of this article comes out AFTER Chapel Hill got what it wanted and has its coaches in place. They seem to be telling the BOG its a NO NO and should not be done again. Amazing this article is written knowing full well that NCSU is most likely going to have to ask the BOG to do the same for them. I wonder how much of this article was really level headed and genuine or an attempt by a liberal UNC biased paper to try and bring heat dwon on the BOG to not do the same thing again and to hamper NCSU hiring a football coach. Amazing there was no editoral after the Roy Williams hire.

  25. RAWFS 11/30/2006 at 3:16 PM #

Exactly the problems you cite at Georgia.

Having relatives that have Alabama, Georgia or GT degrees keeps me really plugged into football in those two states. Now that I have married my wife, I’ve picked up some relations at Clemson and others at UNC that we don’t talk about except in hushed tones in private.

Anyway, the ones from Georgia loathed Donnan. They thought that he was only slightly better than Jim Harrick, a man they considered a pox on their school. Donnan, they said, was arrogant, condescending, unwilling to listen and ultimately not a great game coach. They added that he would end up getting them on probation, and even though that did not happen, they still worried about it constantly. Seems in their view Donnan took too many shortcuts too close to the line.

That he has not been offered any job should speak volumes. Were Donnan the second coming of Vince Lombardi, someone would offer him a job. Mike Price was able to coach again, for example. Why not Donnan?
