More Lowe (or is it “Lower”?)

SFN has been on fire the last couple of days so I encourage you to please spend some time surfing through the recent entries on the blog.

When I worked on this piece with some of the other authors yesterday I couldn’t get over my joy of reading what Andy Katz wrote in his INsider entry on ESPN. He gave more compliments to Coach Lowe than just the teaser that SFN ran:

But nothing Michigan did matched the hustle and intensity of NC State. For those who weren’t sure how Lowe would coach, you should know this: His players absolutely love him and would run through a brick wall for him.

In fact, (other than Jimmy Dykes) it seems that most of the media is jumping on the Sidney Lowe bandwagon quicker than we can find all of their recent quotes and criticism of NC State’s program and hiring of Lowe.

I was listening to Mark Packer’s show in Charlotte yesterday and was very pleased to hear the compliments that he was laying on Lowe on NC State. Packer also astutely mentioned some of Lowe’s early recruiting success that seemed to slip the mind of ESPN’s crew the other night. (I almost get the feeling that Packer has been pulling for State to become relevant again for years. I hope that we can oblige in the next couple of years)

Most interestingly, Packer noticed what everyone in the RBC knew (and many were verbalizing) – Wolfpackers looked and sounded like they were having a BLAST!!! and that he hasn’t seen this kind of excitement in a long time.

He couldn’t be more correct. I haven’t spoken with a friend or fan who hasn’t made some kind of comment about how much ‘fun’ they have watching this team. I met a friend for a beer after the game on Monday night and the first thing that he innocently said was, “That was a lot of fun tonight!” Gee. Fun. How dare us all want to enjoy ourselves for the thousands of dollars we shell out in lifetime rights, Wolfpack Club dues, and season tickets!!!

Check out some of the other finds today:

* Whomever Ken Medlin is…he says that he is Sold on Sidney Lowe.

If I’d told any of you that Engin Atsur would miss nearly the entire game against Michigan, and the Pack would still win… would you have believed it? Lowe has his team motivated. They believe in the “team concept,” but they don’t believe their team depth is too thin. Beating a quality team — without Atsur — is proof positive.

And how about Lowe’s in-game coaching? He’s animated. He’s intense. And his first-half timeouts — which are becoming a game-by-game event — always seem to spark his team at the right time.

* From 850TheBuzz, “you’ve got to give Sidney Lowe and company high marks for their first significant test of the season.”

A little more
I saw a quote on an NC State message board that was related to this very topic on which I wanted to take the opportunity to comment.

Most of the annoying media comments are the result of talking points generated by the herd mentality of lazy sportswriters who aren’t even particularly interested in NC State

I don’t disagree with the comments. But, I have to sincerely ask – who is responsible for leading the media herd to their conclusions and sparking all of this criticism in recent years? As we know…it isn’t like the media can really think for themselves. If they could there would be no jobs for public relations professionals and ‘Spin Doctors”.

If Lee Fowler wouldn’t have spent his last five years launching a one-man crusade to prove to the world that Herb Sendek was the best basketball coach since John Wooden (and therefore Fowler made a wonderful decision by keeping Sendek after the dreadful 5th year) then perhaps the media wouldn’t have many of these thoughts or feel so entitled to say be so negative about NC State.

Arizona State just fired a football coach who has gone to 3 or 4 consecutive bowls (including this year). You can run down a list of hundreds of football and basketball coaches who get removed after generating SIGNIFICANTLY more success than NC State’s coaches. Do you think that you are going to see and hear hundreds of criticisms of all of these programs for months to come?

Of course not!! ecause other Athletics Directors don’t spend half a decade publicly degrading large portions of their fan base with labels like “crazy” and “lunatic fringe”.

Other ADs issue statements (and TRULY BELIEVE) like this classic statement from Nebraska and or like this one from Arizona State’s AD earlier this week:

“The next person that I will be hiring won’t be shy about this,” Love said. “They’ll clearly understand the goals. The winner of the Pac-10 Conference plays in the Rose Bowl. The Rose Bowl is the goal for Sun Devil football. No one should approach me about this job if they don’t understand that and they don’t understand what’s going on at Arizona State University, because it’s pretty powerful stuff.”

I will remind everyone that the Fall of 1996 and Spring of 1997 were heady times as well. I’m excited too, but let’s not get too carried away. Enjoy the good times now and try not to get too invested in waiting for a future that may or may not come to pass. To paraphrase a certain pariah: It’s a journey, not a destination.

    This is a great entry.
It clarifys the way I feel about our half wit leader.
It also explains why the announcers talk like they do. Very weel thought out.
    Thanks

“But, I have to sincerely ask – who is responsible for leading the media herd to their conclusions and sparking all of this criticism in recent years?”

It is because coaches develop a relationship with writers and TV commentators. They can, to a degree, become friends. Sendek was good with the media and they loved him. When he was ousted, the media, especially those where were friends with him, were very disappointed he left, and and the risk of sounding provocative, angry at the fan base for ousting their friend. I don’t know for sure, but I would imagine that Dykes had a professional relationship with Herbie and was venting about his friend being fired. If so, that is obviously unprofessional behavior because a journalist is suppose to be neutral.

On the upside, the media is getting to know Coach Lowe more and more and they like him. These why-were-you-so-mean-to-Herbie comments will die off. Coach Lowe exudes personality and energy that media latch on to and like. Not the cocky personality like CTC, but displaying a LOVE for the game like hasn’t been seen at State since V. You could be in the nosebleed section of RBC and look down at the bench and just tell Lowe is having fun.

    ^ Two points:

    1. Herb was NOT fired. He left on his own.

    2. His relationship with Jimmy Dykes might be more than professional. I think I saw them checking into an hourly rate motel together Monday afternoon.

  5. ncwolfie2000 11/29/2006 at 11:39 AM #

“Herb was NOT fired. He left on his own.”

Doesn’t matter. The media perceives him being forced out by the fans. And many of them will not change their minds.

SFN: But see…it DOES MATTER. The media only preceives him being forced out by the fans because our own idiot AD and adminstration planted that seed and nutured it for years. And now, he/they allow it to continue to grow. The media basically “perceives” what they are led to believe. If ANYONE at NC State had any leadership in them they would CHANGE the pereception.

As for your second point, was Coach K in the mix too?

  6. redfred2 11/29/2006 at 11:41 AM #

Think back, way back to the end of last season, or just after the hire, even as recently as right before the first game against Delaware State started, we were all expecting…???

The turn around that Sidney Lowe and his staff have made in these kid’s minds in such a short period of time, is nothing short of incredible!!!

Now, add to that a dreaded ‘what if’ scenario of Simmons AND Brackman being suited up right now. MAN!!! Oh well, the door is open according to Lowe, and there is still the possibility of Brackman’s return. I’m not placing any hopes on it at this point, and the odds of it happening are probably ten million to one, but, if he’s been out there watching, and he’s as competitive natured as I think he is, maybe???

Let’s start a “Get your basketball playing ass out here, Andrew Brackman!!!” campaign.

  7. 98st8 11/29/2006 at 11:46 AM #

Guys…we did force him out. I thought that is what we were trying to do. I don’t hide behind that. I wanted him gone. We all did. He got the message and left town. Yes damnit we forced him out. WE DEMAND BETTER!! Be proud of that!

  8. 98st8 11/29/2006 at 11:48 AM #

The media says the common fan has no say in whether a coach stays or leaves… herb was not fired, Lee was not going to fire him… The fans (WE) fired him. He is gone. SIDNEY you are the MAN

ShootingGuard Says: “Too bad the academic idiots at State think you de-emphasize the sports programs to bolster the educational foundations…”

I’m not sure that’s what the academics think but you are looking at the source of it all here at NCSU. The thinking of academics, whatever it is, results in an effort to keep athletics “in its place.” It is the culture of the academia at NCSU to always place academics above athletics. Coaches salaries are an issue in that they are higher than professors.

NCSU is a step-child of the University of North Carolina. Our roots are mechanics and farmers. The roots of UNX are professional people — doctors, lawyers, etc. Culturally we have never broken free of this. This is the source of the great divide here on SFN. Some of us are given who we know ourselves to be by those roots. And we can’t raise or sell enough pigs to shed those roots. We can be free of those roots but shackles will not be removed by circumstance alone.

Some fans, especially the relatively new or younger NCSU fans, have that freedom and are demanding equalilty of facilities and athletics and results. Others of us are content to complain about the our media treatment. Most of us would have been satisfied with an average of 8-4 with an occasional 11-2 thrown in. With a few more wins Chuck could have coached here without fulfilling on his promises or vision for the rest of his life.

It is fortunate that we have an AD to lay the blame for most of our athletic problems even tho he is serving under the direction of the Chancellor and is in all likelyhood directed in all major decisions. Take a look at Chuck/s contract. It is signed first by the AD, then by the Chancellor and the bottom line is the chairwoman of the BOT. As long as NCSU is the step-child and in its place as related to academia, everything can proceed according to the order of the universe.

Does anyone here really think the Board of Trustees is going to allow NCSU to consistently rise above the flag ship of the University of North Carolina?

I know it is dangerous to compare scores but did anyone notice this:
    (9) Marquette 65
    Valporaiso 62

and it was a 3 pt shot with 3 seconds to play. Valpo outscored them in the second half. In the spring there was some talk of Tom Creen. Well, Sidney’s team made some changes at halftime and crushed Valpo. Creen’s team got outplayed in the second half. … just sayin’

  12. Gene 11/29/2006 at 11:58 AM #

My only criticism of NCSU fans is please translate your enthusiasm into attendance. We were only about 2/3 full on Monday night against Michigan. I want the RBC center to be a place where other teams dread to play and filling it to capacity every night, or at least against big name opponents, would help a lot.

Delware State beat a pretty good team also, can’t remember who?

  14. Gene 11/29/2006 at 12:12 PM #

Marquette’s been living dangerously all year. They barely beat some worse teams than Valpo. earlier in the year, like D-II Hillside and Idaho St., but still managed to knock off Duke. Marquette’s a young team and probably plays to the level of their competition.

On the flip side Wofford lost by 23 to UNC-G and they gave us all we could handle.

It’s not dangerous to compare scores, it’s just that comparing scores doesn’t often give you any useful info.

  15. 98st8 11/29/2006 at 12:17 PM #

Gene^ I only like to compare scores when its beneficial to my argument. JK

  16. Gene 11/29/2006 at 12:19 PM #

Not picking on you 98st8, but I think it’s too early to tell how our RPI will shake out. I hope Valpo, Wofford, Delaware St. and Gardner-Webb all win their conferences, because it’d do wonders for our RPI, but it’s too early to tell.

Sid has the team looking good. And hopefully the “conmmittee” (sans Foulup) can hit a homerun with CTC’s replacement. But I sincerely hope that the “get rid of Foulup” campaign continues until it succeeds! No matter how good the coaches are, he’ll screw it up!

“I will remind everyone that the Fall of 1996 and Spring of 1997”

Maybe, but we where coming out of the black hole of the Les Robinson era. This was a time when just having a coach take the time to put on a suit and comb his hair (Sendek had a little more back then) before the game was a big deal.

Herb, who has led his team to five consecutive NCAA tournaments, didn’t have the recruiting, personality or coaching skills of Lowe. In fairness to Herb was about a 32 yo kid when he came to State. Way above his head and during the decade he never adapted to the job. The entire NC State basketball is all mine so screw the past attitude chip on the shoulder became stronger every year. Maybe with age he will learn to become a little more approachable and open to new ideas and turn around the Arizona St. program.

  19. partialqualifier 11/29/2006 at 1:18 PM #

    Redfred:

I think you and I agree, but I wasnt very clear earlier. I think after Herb leaving, and Brackman not coming back, and Simmons going pro, and our 2 best recruits hitting the road, and having to give scholarships to walk-ons, and being picked last in the ACC (and a hundred votes out of 11th), etc….there were lots of opportunities for these guys to doubt the success of this season. They read the papers and magazines. They know there is no depth nor experience of any kind. But I was impressed from the get-go with the fact that none of that seemed to phase them a bit.

As far as them playing above their potential….it is a little early for me to say that, but considering they have no true power forward, center, or point guard on their team…and considering they are bringing Horner and Nieman off the bench (which would have to be the 2 lowest ranked sixth men in the league), and considering how young they are….I would say beating a veteran Michigan team with Seniors everywhere that played in the NIT championship game (and Digger Phelps said they are possibly a Final Four team this year) is playing above their potential.

“I will remind everyone that the Fall of 1996 and Spring of 1997″

What the hell is that supposed to mean right now? Is it bragging done on a comparison basis. Or is it a statement predicting future downfall?

As much as I believe in Sidney Lowe’s ability to take us back to where we belong and want him to be here for longer than maybe even he, wants to be, times do unfortunately change. But unlike before, in both football and basketball FOR SOME STRANGE REASON that went much deeper than their coaching job titles at >NC STATE

  21. Pack Laddie 11/29/2006 at 1:34 PM #

If you are going to compare scores, which really proves nothing, Wofford lost by 23 or 24 to UNC-G, a future Wolfpack opponent.

I am anxious to see how Lowe defends Virginia. Even if Engin was healthy, the Singletary/Reynolds backcourt would be a tough matchup for us. We have looked to be susceptible to dribble penetration by a couple of smaller, quicker guards already this year.

Obviously, the zone worked beautifully against UM the other night, and I would suspect we will see a lot of it again this weekend, in an attempt to neutralize their driving ability. IMO, Grant and Fells/Neiman would have matchup problems with their guards. Somebody mentioned a triangle and 2, which would be interesting, but the matchup problem would still exist. That is whey I think we will see a lot of zone.

On the flip side, Gavin could create huge matchup problems for them at the other end.

Should be a very interesting game, and a good ACC opener for both teams.

    Great Insight and Article…

Ken Medlin’s Blog at WRAL is a MUST READ…especially the comments…

    http://html.wral.com/sh/blogger/2006/11/ken-medlin-states-getting-lowe-down-or.html

I have attended all the games since the infamous (what is this brown round thing?) Red & White game….some comments

    1. Attendance DOES need to come up…it will….but keep urging your friends to come on out…

    2. The RBC’s “spirit” has never been like this…I equated it to a dungeon with Herb…I went to the games…but there was NO enthusiasm…

    3. Sidney Lowe, and his tribe of overachievers, has to be the REASON….maybe there are a lot of diehard V’s supporters in the arena this year. I popped for prime time (Champion’s Club) Lifetime Seats this year. Did this right after the season ended early this spring…my prayers were answered Twice…once when Herb Resigned and finally LOWE said YES…

    4. Whoever came up the intro (’74 & ’83) and the DD Hungry Life the Wolf closing was a genius…We, my friends, we may live in the long gone past because yesteryear was a NIGHTMARE. I sold my ACC Tourney Tickets on Friday night in Greensboro this spring and cursed Herb’s coaching ability the rest of the weekend…

    5. Sidney has already demonstrated more moxie and natural coaching ability in 5 games than certain coaches (Les and More-or-Less) did since V left. If you read Bob V’s book and listen to his comments, he stated that V called him and said that he had just signed the SMARTEST and most BB savy Point Guard that he had EVER coached….SIDNEY LOWE…

    6. Yes, isn’t is NICE to have a coach who has GREAT communication skills. My wife is mesmerrized with his voice on the radio. His answers are incredible…so welll thought out. We will NOT have any negative media from this hire.

    7. NOW…as to Mr. FUF (aka IKB)….will someone PLEASE confirm my sighting on him the other night during the second half…he strutted with the band, the students and then made a spectacle of himself up press row…or was that a taller John Edwards?

    8. Mr. FUF is obviously the LUCKIEST AD in the country…WAIT…he is the SECOND luckiest AD…Bad Boy Baddour is the luckiest…My UNX fans (the ones who have been around and make some HD $$ payments) tell me that you could have shown BBB a photo of Butch Davis a month ago and offered him $10K if he could tell you his name, his past profession, etc. Now that, my WP Friends, is LUCK…FUF’s “landing” of Lowe pales in comparison.

    9. Did anyone see the Lowe and Ref “chat” during the second half. Sidney obviously took exception, professionally, to the UM Travelling Ref’s…I noticed the calls were more balanced after that TO…Sid talked longer to that Ref that HS did to ALL the Refs during his 10 year tenure.

    10. FINALLY…From my seat, I saw the wild three-pointer hit the backboard, bounce off the rim, go UP – almost to the TOP of the backboard – and then, and THEN, AND THEN….a ghostly hand came down and gently “dunked” it. The Ref had to wipe the Pasta sauce off the ball. Jimmy V’s GHOST was alive and with us in the RBC…the first time I have EVER felt it’s presence…we NEED JIMMY V’s NAME ON THE COURT….Start a movement….shout it from the top of the Bell Tower….

This is going to be a GREAT SEASON…regardless of this year’s W/L record…

    GOOOOOOOO PAAAAAAAAACK!

  24. Pack Laddie 11/29/2006 at 1:53 PM #

“Sid talked longer to that Ref that HS did to ALL the Refs during his 10 year tenure.”

total BS—that is seeing what you want to see
