Logan Outlines Recruiting Risk of Johnson Hire

As many in the NC State community seem to work to convince themselves that hiring Navy’s Paul Johnson would be a great hire, 850TheBuzz’s Steve Logan did a fantastic job of highlighting some challenges that Paul Johnson is going to face on the all-important recruiting trail.

Remember, whomever NC State hires will be recruiting against Carolina’s Butch Davis who has NFL Head Coaching experience and has been extremely successful at a high profile Division One program.

On his radio show today, Logan stressed the importance of selling the NFL to the type of high school talent that comprise the programs in major conferences like the ACC. As he does with most topics on his show, Logan offered his perspective as if “he were the coach” in a situation. He stated that if he were at Carolina recruiting against Paul Johnson that he would stress the importance of the NFL to any player that he recruited on the offensive side of the ball.

Offensive Line – I will teach you how to pass block so you can make the NFL.

Quarterback – I will teach you how to throw.

Running Back – I will teach you how pass block for the NFL.

Wide Receiver – I will teach you to how to run block like the NFL, how to catch like the NFL, etc.

The message is clear – Paul Johnson has had legitimate success that deserves acknowledgement and recognition, but his system may create problems while trying to recruit the kind of talent that typically resides in conferences like the ACC.

We don’t have an educated opinion on this topic yet, but would love to hear your thoughts.

I think the fact that WTVD is not playing this interview up probably suggests there will be no big news here — or if there is, it won’t be good.

This is off topic but did anyone else see Frank Beamer’s ballot for All-Americans? He nominated 6 of his own Hokies. Shameless.
    Deadspin-Beamer’s All-American Ballot

on pack pride , Cowher’s comments on the Job

What’s your reaction to being at the top of the NC State search?
First of all, let me just say I have great admiration and respect for coach Amato and what he’s done since he went down there. I’m very flattered to hear some of the things that have been coming out, but I’m not a candidate. I have a job here and my focus really is on this job right here, so you can take me off the list. I am flattered. It’s a super program and I’m sure that they’ll get a very qualified coach who’s going to walk into a good situation.

Does it interest you at all?
    No.

Has anyone tried contacting you about it?
No. Like I said, I’ve been getting a lot of contacts about it; I’ve heard about it. But like I said I’ve got a job here. Can you envision some day being a college coach? I don’t know. I don’t look that far down the road, I really don’t. I guess those are times when you get in that reflective mode

I’m not a paul johnson advocate but one counterpoint would be Urban Meyer. His offense is not NFL orientated, and he’s recruited very well…of course being at Univ. of Florida helps (esp. when Miami and FSU suck). he also recruited well at Utah and got Alex Smith in the NFL.

For the record, I think my #2 choice is Fisher.

I’ve heard the same argument about Duke at times during the K years. Duke players don’t produce in the NBA, Duke players don’t make the NBA, blah… blah…. blah. Y’all trying to say that Duke doesn’t win plenty enough COLLEGE basketball games to make that completely okay?

We’ve put more talent into the NFL in the last few years than at any period on my life on this earth and yet we’re TERRIBLE.

My other issue about this “insight” from Coach Logan is this…. should he really be commenting about a coaching search that he wants to be a part of for a piece of shit media outlet like 850 the Buzz? Technically he possibly has a horse in this race and yet he’s going to yap about in public on an AM radio show? Not very smart if you ask me….

i think we need to get a bigger fish than PJ if cowher falls through. We now have to go toe to toe with Butch Davis, guys he is 1/16th Native American, not to mention one of the better college coaches of the last decade. You do not go from the college ranks to the pros and into a head coaching position unless you are of the magnitude of a Steve Spurrier, Butch Davis, etc. maybe you can attribute Butch’s success at Miami to the talent down there, but he had to compete against UF and FSU(w/ Bobby Bowden in his prime) to recruit that team that won the national title. Butch Davis is legit, and we need to make just as big a splash if not a bigger one coaching wise to hold our ground. Something about getting a coach from one of the military academies, great coach or not, doesn’t do it for me.

    Well, shit.

  8. Cali_Wolf 11/29/2006 at 4:34 PM #

    Gary Barnett????????????

  9. RAWFS 11/29/2006 at 4:34 PM #

Bad news indeed, but the Cutcliffe accepts offer rumor our of Knoxville seems like BS.

“. Another reason why he struggles against speed. Like FSU.”

Dan, did you watch the game?

Florida pulled the dogs off late in the fourth quarter, and didn’t run the score up.

And besides, what makes you so sure that Paul Johnson would not modify his offensive scheme given better players?

  11. Cali_Wolf 11/29/2006 at 4:36 PM #

That is a bad news, i like cutcliffe, he would be good fit

Not being contacted about the job has to be a complete lie. I’ve heard quite the contrary from someone who is close to Murphey.

He might not want the job, but he was contacted about it. Maybe that’s Cowher saving face for us, though.

  13. RAWFS 11/29/2006 at 4:40 PM #

I also would like to add that Rich Rodriguez (WVa) and Jeff Tedford (Cal) run the TO or SO offense too. They are not bad programs, last I checked.

    From Tuesday’s update:
We are expecting this “search” to be pretty quick and pretty painless.

It now looks as thought things are evolving as it has appeared they would – if Bill Cowher says no then Paul Johnson is the man. We expect that NC State will receive an answer from Bill Cowher by the end of the week (likely Thursday or Friday).

Well, Cowher just said no. Is Paul Johnson still the man?

  15. Mr O 11/29/2006 at 4:44 PM #

    Is this really the end???

  16. RAWFS 11/29/2006 at 4:47 PM #

“Not being contacted about the job has to be a complete lie. I’ve heard quite the contrary from someone who is close to Murphey.”

Being contacted by Chuck Neinas, or even by Murphy himself is different than being contacted by Lee Fowler in an official capacity.

You would have to think that Lee would be like the lawyer at your house closing. The deal is struck and he’s pretty much there with the contract and the keys.

  17. Dan 11/29/2006 at 4:47 PM #

“And besides, what makes you so sure that Paul Johnson would not modify his offensive scheme given better players?”

I’m not sure of anything with PJ. That’s why I dont like the hire. Its a big “WE DONT KNOW”. That’s ok for maybe a one year deal. But not a five year committment.

I’m not saying PJ isnt a good coach. I’m saying there are way too many unknowns with PJ. Will the spread even work in this league? Will he change the offense? Can he recuit? Can he compete at the BCS level?

    Too many unknowns.

FYI: Johnson will be on Rome today.

See you guys after the Army/Navy game

  19. old13 11/29/2006 at 4:51 PM #

I would think that there are several NFL assistants interested, plus the Gary Barnetts, et al. The more I think about PJ, the les I think it’s a good idea – not if we are to have someone to pick up where CTC left off. To me, PJ is somewhat going back to square one. And with Butch Davis now in the neighborhood, NCSU needs to hit a homerun. Surely NCSU can attract more than an up-and-comer now!

  20. 98st8 11/29/2006 at 4:54 PM #

for what its worth, I would take Jimbo Fisher. Great resume.. he will be the head coach at a big school in the near future and will be awesome. There are WAY too many question marks about PJ. IMHO

  21. cpwolfpackfan 11/29/2006 at 4:54 PM #

no cower, he is not coming, this is going to turn into the basketball search all over again

  22. 98st8 11/29/2006 at 4:54 PM #

    old13… could not agree more

  23. GoldenChain 11/29/2006 at 4:54 PM #

Could someone explain to me why the media thinks Davis being a loser in the pros is an advantage but Lowe being a loser in the pros is a disadvantage?

  24. packbackr04 11/29/2006 at 4:57 PM #

im gonna go get into the wild turkey and ride out this storm.

    what about tedfor from CAL?
what about Petrino from Louisville? he is ITALIAN

  25. Mr O 11/29/2006 at 4:58 PM #

Goldenchain: Davis has college experience. That is the main difference.
