Fowler Tries Not To Comment On Amato; Embarrasses Self Again (Updated 7:45)

Mr. ‘I Know Basketball’ tried not to comment on the coaching situation of Chuck Amato, but read between the lines. When IKB won’t babble on and on about how he is in your corner. You are in serious trouble.

“”I’m not going to get into any speculation about Chuck,” Fowler said.

Asked if he would end speculation about Amato’s job being in jeopardy by confirming that Amato would return in 2007, Fowler said, “I don’t want to say anything about Coach Amato at this point. We’ll look at the season when it’s over. I’m a big believer in Senior Day and I want the seniors to have the opportunity to go out with a good Senior Day, so I don’t want to get into any speculation.

“I’ve been consistent in saying we will evaluate everything at the end of the season. The season ends Saturday.”

Huh?

“I’ve been consistent in saying we will evaluate everything at the end of the season. The season ends Saturday.”

Is this a joke?

Enter this as exhibit #8,000 as evidence of ‘whatever goes on in the mind of Lee Fowler must be true despite reality and multiple exhibits of fact to the contrary.” I swear to you that Fowler truly believes that if he just says something…then it becomes the truth regardless of reality.

This is an Athletics Director who took the step to CALL ESPN’S Mark May in the middle of the football season to criticize and correct May after May had stated on the air that Chuck Amato was in trouble at NC State. (Link) As embarassing as that behavior is in its own right, I think that it is topped by Fowler’s backtracking now as he tries to posit himself as a calm, patient, introspective AD who waits until the end of the season to evaluate things. Bullshit. Fowler didn’t call Mark May and tell him that Chuck would be evaluated at the end of the season, did he?

Just two weeks ago (November 7th) the N&O ran a story titled, “Amato status ‘not an issue’ / N.C. State athletics director says coach’s job is secure despite some fans’ gripes”. We even made a big deal about Fowler’s media splash during that day in this great entry.

You tell us how consistent Fowler is in saying that State will evaluate everything at the end of the year. From the N&O:

RALEIGH – N.C. State athletics director Lee Fowler, while acknowledging the mounting frustration of a four-game losing streak, said Monday he firmly supports Wolfpack football coach Chuck Amato.

“I’m 100 percent behind Chuck,” Fowler said in an interview. “We’ve had disappointing losses; and when you lose four in a row by a touchdown or less, things come up such as, ‘If we had just done this or done that.’ I know the frustration of our fan base.

“But I’ve watched Chuck closely this year. He’s coaching just like he did when we were 11-3. He’s remaining very positive. Recruiting is going well.”

Or Say Chuck is our man and let the WPN deal with it.

Can you get around a buy out by appointing CTC to another position in the athletic department? Even if we decide to let CTC go, I would hate to see him disappear from the program. I would like to see him be involved and even be welcomed by the new coach. It would help the transition and would also be a nice gesture to someone who really cares about NC State.

^ I’d like to see CTC still involved with NC State. I don’t know what other athletic dept. positions, he could do….maybe media relations? 😉

This is a sign that Chuck will possibly be left hanging to endure another year of criticism and dragged still further over the hot coals. Either way, it leaves no optimism or any way to give him a decent send off if he is removed after the season. It is flat out controversy that will bring him down and ruin team spirit, along with the senior’s day that Lee Fowler is now saying is his primary focus.

Chuck might be in a better position to retain a job within the department if he hadn’t acted like a complete asshole for the past 7 years.

For what it is worth. I was called by a Wolfpack Club representative last night. He said they call members “routinely — twice a year” but in my 25 plus or minus years of membership — I have never been contacted.

I told him my only gripes were the footbal program’s disarray and the sudent over crowding/seating problems near my seats. I’m near the notorious pee seats. I’m only sitting there now to be near some friends with lesser points.

I also said I was not happy at all with the football “situation”. He said that 75% of the people he had contacted — echoed that same comment.

I think the WPC is hurrying to assess damage to try to contain it. Several friends of mine have already said that they are not buying tickets next year — even while paying for permanent seats. I suspect the WPC is hearing the same.

You know, every time I read the headline of this entry, I just start laughing. Fowler is such an unbelievable buffoon. I can’t think of an AD in the country who tops him for sheer buffoonery. Can you imagine Terry Holland coming off as stupid as Fowler, in any situation?

I heard spurrier is headed to the U. which makes the ACC scary, very scary for the next few years.

I agree that cowher will need help recruiting, thats why you keep amato on as assoc head coach, and just let him recruit. he is a salesman, a great one, always has been. Hes just not a very good coach. so let him do what he does best and keep signing athletes to play for the pack

Let’s not be mistaken…LEE FOWLER is not going to fire Chuck Amato. He will be told to fire him and will do it, or he will be canned and then they’ll do it for him.

(As for ASU, they can’t afford to fire their Football coach this year. They would have to pay him over $3.8 million and they don’t have that kind of money right now.)

“I’m a big believer in Senior Day and I want the seniors to have the opportunity to go out with a good Senior Day”

What about next year’s seniors? And the year after that? Wouldn’t they stand a better chance of, “a good Senior Day” with a new coach? Wouldn’t knowing that you were going to a bowl game help to make senior day better?

  11. BoKnowsNCS71 11/21/2006 at 10:58 AM #

UNC had a great Senior day. Although the coach was fired several games prior, they beat us. Maybe our seniors will get motivated the same way. Nothing else seems to work.

04, you’re jumping the gun a little bit there, but CA’s ability to recruit may also decrease from a lesser position than HC. ???

Spurrier said his name was not in the hat for any other jobs and he hoped at South Carolina for the next 7 or 8 years. Oh well, that’s Steve Spurrier. The guy welcomes any challenge and will jump all over any opportunity to prove how good he is. I know USC folks would be destroyed if it is though.

If no announcement is made, and a Clemson-esque whoopin’ is tossed on this team, you’ll be able to hear the booing in Holladay Hall.

Vision of Saturday night……minimal tailgating amongst NCSU fans because the ECU fans will have used up their NCSU friends’ tickets. Bitter discussions during halftime and minimal cheering throughout the game. I feel sorry for the Seniors and other team members.

I can’t imagine for a split second Cowher coaching at State. It just doesn’t add up on any level, except a nice fantasy for Pack supporters. Anyway, I’d much rather have Cowher come is as AD, where he’d do the most good. I’d also suggest State go after Bud Foster, VT’s long-time defensive coordinator. He’s the backbone of the Hokie program. Getting him away from VPI would be tough, but the State job could be attractive to him.
Hell, let’s take a look at Grobe! 🙂

    redfred2,

Just got a call from a major Bama booster to tell me that Spurrier is incredibly in the mix down in Tuscaloosa. And he should know. He writes them a check every January for 5x my annual salary and I ain’t exactly flippin’ burgers.

  17. Cardiff Giant 11/21/2006 at 11:05 AM #

I have it on good authority that the Singing Von Trapp Family will perform at halftime.

I don’t doubt it in the least. Spurrier says the things that everyone wants to hear, then puff…he’s gone. He’s good enough to do that and still be on eveyone’s wish lists.

^^^”Fowler even put the smack down on Mark May in early October, calling the ESPN analyst and telling him the hot seat junk was “not being consideredâ€?. StateFansNation has more examples of Fowler stating that Amato’s job status was not an issue. What has changed?”

uuuh? We’ve lost 6 in a ROW since early October, and we’re two plays away from being 1-10 instead of 3-8!!

  22. ncsu81 11/22/2006 at 7:50 PM #

Statefans Nation is back up, I had no idea how addicted I was until it went away. Any truth to the rumor that you guys know exactly what is happening with Chuck and just wanted to be “down” for a day or so to let things play out?

  23. choppack1 11/22/2006 at 9:10 PM #

A good article to demagogue was written by Ned Barnett – TRAWFS does a good job of breaking down why he should go – and makes a sad, but accurate comparison to MOC.

Anyone who thinks you’re gonna get Steve Spurrier must have a degree from the Tarhole Institute of Egotism! My bloods red and white too, but Carter-Finley is still a litte 65,000 seat stadium and that is a major problem with most of the ACC school as they have not committed and cannot fill the seats to be a major football power on a consistent basis.

Spurrier’s not going anywhere as much as the dumb sports media and some jock straps from Miami and everywhere else would like you to believe. If he tried to walk away from the committment that he and South Carolina have just made to improve the athletic facilites at SC, he’d be lynched before he could cross Assembly Street.

Williams-Brice Stadium is going to be pushing 95,000 or so seating capacity at that point plus 16 luxury suites and an additional 800 club seats.

Jeez, sure am glad you guys are back again. I had to listen to my wife when you were gone!
